Very interesting ,but you have left out the revival attempts in the 1930s which were going very well, but the government stopped funding it. I mean the modern olympics were only a few decades at that stage if they had continued who knows which games would have prevailed. It does survive somewhat in low profile interprovincial athletics competition and a cycling race Ras tailteann which in itself was a huge profile event that has become a low profile event. Before covid the GAA wanted to have a second tier gaelic football cup called the tailteann cup and maybe next year they will hold it so the tailteann games have not been forgotten ,but returning it to its past glory remains elusive.
@@galoglaich3281 Thanks for taking the time to write out this detailed comment! As I was researching the Games, I of course came across the modern revival attempts. Wow... that turned out to be a quagmire of politics and opposing accounts, that I consciously chose to not add it to this video. It would have made it into a 35-minute video at the very least. :) You are right though... the success of the first modern Tailteann Games in the 1920s was astounding... it could really have rivaled the Olympics, and honestly already did in its 1924 rendition. Who knows where it could have gone from there! Love the part you added about the modern interprovincial aspect! Great addition and jump-off point for those that want to keep on investigating. Top comment!
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces Yes in fairness it would involve alot of politics and religion, since the catholic church weren't too keen on a festival that originated in pagan times
Thanks Nils, that was brilliant. I believe it was the older dates. When they did the big genealogy study, the people from the west of Ireland were closest to the Basque people. The ancient Irish were highly advanced especially with the astronomy and time side of things. And then the link with ancient Egypt through princess Scotia. Fascinating stuff. I saw a video of ogham writing found in Colorado ( I think, not sure) carved in the rock. I never knew the link with Leiden, and I lived there for a while.!
No way! You lived in Leiden too? Such a small, small world! As my good friend pointed out to me offline after I published the video, Lugdunum Batavorum is actually most probably nearby Katwijk. But, Leiden and specifically Leiden University seems to have reappropriated the name for themselves, so much so that even authoritative sources like the Oxford Dictionary of Celtic Mythology mentions Leiden, rather than Katwijk. Thanks so much for leaving a comment and giving me the opportunity to add that little tidbit!
I would truly LOVE to have seen their health n safety procedures for these games!! ... 😂 I am certain that I read somewhere during a recent deep research phase about those swimming races involving weights tied to the legs of competitiors to test strength and stamina as well as speed! 😁 It may have been in a story but I have been looking into the real life of the people/s, The Brehon Laws and the very similar Welsh laws and all that... and I am sure it was in a paper or factual book somewhere... Well, kids then certainly would not have been bubble wrapped as they are today hehe. Good stuff. Excellent videos 💚 Coming over next summer hopefully 🤞🏽
The Olympics around early 1900's also had strange events, like Town Planning.. Jack Butler Yeats, brother of W.B, won a silver medal in Painting in 1924
Not sure how town planning would be judged, but its a fair bet the winner was not irish.Mind you party organising would be a bit a different we would be world beaters
Thanks for that Ethan! We are overlooking Bishop's Island here, just outside of Kilkee in co. Clare. Insider Easter Egg: During this frame, we were talking about "facing West". This picture is indeed facing West. Too obscure a reference to add to the video, but now that you bring it up.... :). Here is the location on Google Maps for Bishop's Island, in case you are interested: goo.gl/maps/Z2f9azEzdTC9pi9o7
Really love this video.
The place you visited is very beautiful.
I will see this video over and over again.

Very interesting, very professional, very well presented. Niels, you rock! Definitely learned a few things here : )
I'm *unprofessionally* blushing here! Thanks for the compliments John, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Love this! So much detail!
That's the great thing about Irish history... once you dive in, there is just soooooooooo much!

Great video. The closed captioning was really good ant first and then dropped significantly in quality around minute 5.
Awesome video.
Thanks!

Wait... town planning? That just sounds like a a bad excuse to throw a party if you win a medal! Thanks for adding that awesome little detail, Phil!
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces Haha yeah andobviously the party is thrown by the "party organiser" gold medalist
