I watch another Appalachian channel where the lady makes this cake as well. It was handed down to her from relatives and it’s her favorite cake. She uses fresh apples to make her cake. It sounds delicious! I would like to make it at least once. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Grandma, you could have gotten six even portions out of your first batch of dough. I think your problem was your pans were bigger than nine inches. I could be wrong on that part but you still could have divided that dough into six evenly portions. All that work for more dough. The cakes are supposed to be much thinner. Find a UA-cam video on making this cake. You still see what they do so you won’t have to work quite so hard and long. We do however, appreciate what you’ve done for us to make this cake.
What you do is put the cake together and wait 24 hours after it’s put together before you eat it. That’s the whole purpose is to allow that apple butter to seep into each layer. And you do put apple butter on the top layer and then sprinkle powdered sugar on top of too.

I grew up eating it for breakfast before school on toast, mostly when the weather was cold. It looks lovely. Thanks for fixing this. I can’t wait to try it out. Good with milk or coffee. ❤❤❤ Also you have the sweetest prayers. Reminds me of my mother who’s gone home to be with the Lord ❤❤❤❤

My grandmother never made stack cakes but a dear friend of hers would often visit and spend the day baking. One of the things she would bake was stack cake. She sometimes used blackberry jam between the layers, other times it was my grandma's homemade apple butter. She made a thick glaze icing to spread on top and let it drip down the sides. She wouldn't cut it until it had "rested" several hours, so the jam or apple butter could soak into the cookie-like layer.

If you put flour on your table you roll the dough out with your rolling pin.Thats how you get it paper thin.It fits nicer in a pan with smooth edges.

Back in the 50’s I remember sitting up in the kitchen chair with my elbows on the table watching my grandma either making a cake or pies. She would stick her tongue out a little while concentrating and it made me laugh! She would purposely stick her tongue out a little just to make me laugh and my mom always wondered what we were giggling about lol. Cherish your days and projects you do with your Mawmaw, Corey. When all we have are our precious memories, it’s what makes us cherish the Lord even more for letting us have our memories to remember. You will guard your UA-cam videos with your Mawmaw, should maybe download them somewhere for safe keeping? So much love, in Our Father Name, from SoCal.

My Mom, who has gone on to heaven, used to make stack cakes. They were so good and she was a wonderful cook. Like you she made homemade bread, rolls, biscuits, and cakes of all kinds. Mom even made homemade hamburger and hotdog buns as well as homemade donuts. She made an Orange Slice Candy Cake that was so good. (I tried to make the Orange Slice Candy cake one time. It was expensive to make because of all the ingredients. My cake would not get done so I baked it longer. When I took it out of the oven, it was so heavy. We couldn't slice it or even eat it. It was terrible!! My husband said they could play ball with it. Lol) She was a cook at my elementary school for years. Back then, they had some mighty good meals in the cafeteria. Now, they all this processed foods they fix for our children. I wish I could be half the cook she was. I miss my Mom so much and I plan on seeing her some day!!

I think to get six slices you were suppose to put less in each pan. Usually thinner slices in a stack cake.

My granny taught me how to make this cake years ago. I’m 66 years old. It was my dad‘s favorite. I would bake it for him after his mom died. She always baked her layers in a 10 inch iron skillet and she put one cup of batter in the skillet and she made it six layers tall, but she used dried apples and she cooked them with cinnamon and nutmeg and sugar, and they were delicious and she would bake it one day it sat in the refrigerator and you ate it the next day, when the juice from the apples soaked into the layers, it held together beautifully and it tasted heavenly best cake I’ve ever eaten. The story I was told about the stack cake is that it was used as a sort of a wedding cake and everybody that came to the wedding would bring a layer and then they would take apple butter or dried apples in between each layer and the more people that attended, the higher, the wedding cake was , I’m from Cumberland gap Tennessee back in the mountains. Thanks for the memory.

I remembered more after reading comments. I do remember my mom using dried apples in her layers. I remember cutting the apples and putting them between 2screens so the bees wouldn't get them and setting them outside to dry. She would cook the dried apples so it was very similar to apple butter.
I don't know why she didn't use her apple butter because it was very similar.
I also remember her winning a blue ribbon at the county fair for her apple butter. She had to go home and make a batch to get her ribbon she had to have a recipe.
She had a pan and a pitcher she used every year . We didn't use measuring cups. So we had to put the pots into measuring cups and use measuring spoons to create a recipe. Because she always "eyeballed" everything like you do.
I cook the same way😂 it's funny when people want your recipe and you really can't give them one.

I tried to get this simple recipe posted here to help Mamaw but it was taken down or something!
Its like the mock apple pie she made but it is mock apple stack cake and its very simple and delicious!
    Mock Apple Stack Cake
I box cinnamon graham crackers ( or plain if you prefer)
    I jar apple butter
Place 2 graham crackers on a long piece of foil
Spread each cracker liberally with dollops of apple butter and continue to spread crackers and stack .
Its so easy like making a sandwich ( 2 cracker stacks side by side)
Continue spreading and stacking until you have
    2 equal stacks placed together.
Spread apple butter all around the outsides of the stack, making sure to coat the top.
Bring foil over the cake till its covered and sealed and refrigerate overnight!!
You will be pleasantly surprised how great it tastes and its very nice to look at also!
Never seen anyone who didn't love it and it tastes like you labored a very long time!
Try it........2 ingredients and takes about 10-15 minutes. No baking and everyone will want your secret!
Can someone help me get this to Margaret? I've not been able to get responses about items I used to send... don't know what the problem was but I watch sometimes still and always pray for them and all the people here! Thank you kindly and God bless each of you! 💞✝️🛐🙏💗

My mom used to make a stack cake like this. But she made the batter thinner like a pancake batter. And she would fry the layers in a skillet like a pancake. She layered them like you did with apple butter but it would be more like 12 to 16 layers.
I should try to make one. They are yummy

    🙌👍❤️ hello y’all , this looks delicious!😋
God bless thank you for this video. We love you all.❤
👍 I love molasses and I love gingerbread, so I imagine this would be delicious!!
I bet this would be really delicious with a cream cheese filling between each layer with the apple butter! Just a thought😊
No, I’ve never made one of these stack cakes, but I have made gingerbread. That’s almost like a cake bread! And lemon bread and lemon poppyseed bread and banana bread and pumpkin bread all delicious.

🌻I have never had molasses or this type of cake. It looks so tasty. Another thing I learned from you is the powdered buttermilk. It seems to me that needs to be a must in my pantry 🤓

My friend miss Mary used to make an Italian cream cake like this. It called for walnuts, raisins, too. To can also make 3 of the 9 inch cakes and cut them in half (thickness wide) and to you will have 6 layers that way, too! I might make those for a church get together....❤️
