Koeman and Xavi both tried it initially. But it never worked. But there is something different about Hansi Flick. We also have incredible options for double pivot now- Cassado and Bernal. Gavi is another level monster too. This team can be insane if they stay fit and if they get over their mental blocks in CL. Flicks system has defensive vulnerabilities and we need that insane defensive beast to pair with FDJ- Gavi, Bernal, Cassado are all supremely talented to be that solution and make this team un-fucking-beatable!!
I think his defensive positioning will be the main issue in this role. We saw him get exposed alot under xavi for defense. But maybe in this flick system he will do better
With De Jong contract expiring (as I know) in 2026, I don't realy beleave he is going to stay at Barca. With so many options, I can see him be sold in summer 2025 to get some money. Now you have Pedri, Gavi, Casado, Fermin and Olmo and there is also Marc Bernal and Noah Darvich in Barca Athletic. So I hope he reduce his wages and stays but if not, just sell and get money for some other positions where Barca needs an "upgrade".

We need specialists, whether it's pressing, defending, scoring, tempo, discipline, gavi satisfies atleast one, olmo and fermin takes care of the attacking threat, pedri is tempo and even defends. De jong is a luxury, there is no one thing he is special in apart from ball carrying maybe, and gavi and pedri aren't slouches in that department plus other things they offer. De jong ball watches alot

In regards to going against the team doctors, he is more than justified considering that they had recently pushed him to play and reimbursed himself because he was not ready. On top of that, surgery is a quick fix that has consequences. A slow and steady recovery is a better long term option. Multiple athletes across multiple sports have had to give the team doctors a hard "no" because they do not have the best interest of the athlete. One example of that in a different sport is Kawhi Leanord in Basketball.

Gavi will return n immediately take the role of defender in the double pivot. It’s perfect for him. He will be allowed to go 100% on defense while not beings the rookery distributors. He won’t be expected to play 100 passes a game because of it and that’s why he’s perfect for it.
