    I've been fortunate enough to be given another batch of scrapwood from a local company that makes chopping boards. As we are approaching the wet season here, I decided to organise the wood and store most of it inside!
    I wanted to share this with you but there will be a proper Scrapwood Challenge in the next few days!
    As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

    I have just found a company where I live that makes custom furniture and they let me go thru their garbage bins for cut-offs. I feel like a child set loose in a candy factory. Keep up the good work with this series.

    I'm always glad to see someone making use out of wood that would other wise go to waste. The rest can be used in your BBQ, pen blanks, jigs, etc. From watching your videos, I'm sure you'll find multiple uses for the leftover bits.

    • @LostWhits
      @LostWhits 5 років тому +1

      Sell the shorter bits as pen blanks, or donate to a local men's shed. They might appreciate it, that is if you can't find a good use for them.

    I see so much potential with all that "useless" scrap. Cutting pieces and pouring epoxy all around to make bowls, tabletops, vases, maybe even a clear bowling ball would look cool. You could make lots of abstract stuff. Thats a gold mine in my eyes.

    I found (as you've demonstrated), that sorting all the off cuts into proper categories really helps with re-purposing the wood into future useful projects.
    Even odd shaped pieces previously glued together for another project, then discarded can save heaps of time if they're stored and labeled. It seems to be a waste of time doing such repettitive mundane tasks, but later you can quickly grab the pieces for your _"beaut idea"_ and the whole thing comes together very fast.

    I think the scrapwood challenge is stocked up for years to come and with the organization that's more time for the projects :)
    Also, for the shortgrain pieces you could cut them square and then laminate them crossways to make a "plywood" beam, then shape it for a furniture leg, lamp or something. Or you could stain some and cut/stack them in a pattern for a mosaic panel door or similar. Segmented turning is also an option, and an excuse to break out the lathe.

    Try making crochet hooks! My dad takes dowels and carves them into hooks, sands them, and usually finishes them with coconut oil. The handle retains a soft texture from sanding, but the tip eventually takes on an almost glass-like texture from the friction of crocheting.

    Here's an challenge. Figure out a way to semi-automate the process of turning the small junk pieces to regular squared up bits which can be glued into endgrain cutting boards. Then sell them back to the local business that gave them to you, along with an equal number of walnut cut into the same blocks. Then when they make endgrain checkerboard cutting boards, they will have checkered endgrain scraps for you, and you will have to figure out how to make the next iteration of fancy cutting board out of that.
