    This is by far the best media server vid I've seen in years! Could you do a longer format walk through?
    Seriously, great vid!

    Great video mate! Very helpful for someone like me that is just getting into setting up a home lab.

    I just ordered myself a nice little minipc, which will be partly used for this. Having a quick breakout to present the layers of the setup helps get a clear/quick overview.
    Thanks.

    You should add Jellyseer/Overseer to your setup, it will make things even easier, especially for any non tech savvy person at home that wants to add anything to the server.

      I ended up using LunaSea for adding new media.
      It does the same thing, but they have a really nice mobile app to go with it.

    I would use Tailnet over forwarding ports for this kind of thing.

      Agreed.
      That's the path I ended up going down.
      It was so easy to setup and use.

    Almost the same as my setup. Although I am using Jackett instead of Prowlsrr and I’m using Plex instead of Jellyfin.

    I would even go further with docker compose and say that it is faster to have 1 docker compose or stack that has in it all the containers you need. So if you have to deploy again the containers you can just run 1 command and everything is back again.

      True.
      I like having the logical separation with many smaller files for some reason.
      Either way - I should definitely put these files into some form of source control in case my SD card ever fails and I lose all the config 😂

    What hardware are you using for the Media Server? Is it really just a Raspberry Pi? I am asking because I would like to upgrade from my current setup, which runs Plex on my NAS (TerraMaster F2-212)

    • @techwithdavidolding
      @techwithdavidolding  6 місяців тому +1

      Yep -- everything is running on a raspberry pi 4.
      It works really well, just need to make sure hardware transcoding is disabled as its not powerful enough for that.
      The only thing I would change is to move my raspberry pi boot drive from a micro SD card to a usb powered SSD.

      I'm running my entire media server on a raspberry pi 4.
      Using the default Raspberry Pi OS with default hardware config settings and most of my services running in individual docker containers.

    Would love to see a start to end guide on this! This is almost exactly what i have been looking for. The only things that are missing for me is a File Server and possibility for a Minecraft Server. Would that also be possible? What OS are you running on your server?

    • @techwithdavidolding
      @techwithdavidolding  4 місяці тому

      I've put in depth guides to each in the description of this video you can check out.
      Some are by me and others by other creators which have done a great job explaining things.
      I'm running Raspberry Pi OS which is based on Debian Linux.
      Those are great ideas -- I plan to purchase a NAS and set up a File Server some time in the future. I'll make a video on that when it happens.

    Im so stuck. I flashed my old windows pc to ubuntu. And can not visually see these programs. Beyond frustrating. Feel like i need to change to unraid or truenass or something.

    • @techwithdavidolding
      @techwithdavidolding  4 місяці тому

      Oh man sounds painful.
      It's been ages since I've touched Ubuntu I can't even remember if apps get registered to a specific apps section within that system.
      I wonder if they register as a service and run silently in the background.
      Open a terminal window and type 'ps -ef'
      That will show you all running processes running on your system.
      I'm not sure how you'd find the location the config files get written to though.

      Absolutely agree!

      For everyone else tailscale lets you access your media server from anywhere in the world... not just while you're connected to your home network.

    The most important thing you haven't said: how to implement all this and make it work not only for English speakers, but also for those of us who don't know English.

    • @techwithdavidolding
      @techwithdavidolding  3 місяці тому +2

      There are links down in the description for in depth installation and setup guides for each piece of software I talk about which you can follow for now.
      I plan to release a full in depth tutorial myself sometime in the future.
      Also I only know English so I'm unable to translate things well in other languages.

    • @francocastilloAR
      @francocastilloAR 3 місяці тому

      @@techwithdavidolding Regarding other languages, I was referring to whether these programs work as well in other languages as they do when content is easily available in English. When I download series, it is very difficult to get the subtitles to be synchronized with the chapter, among other related problems.

    • @techwithdavidolding
      @techwithdavidolding  3 місяці тому

      Ahh right - In Radarr and Sonarr under Settings --> Profiles --> Quality Profiles -- you can set which language you would like to download in.
      There is also another piece of software I learnt about after making this video called Bazarr.
      This automatically scans your library and downloads subtitles in languages you specify.
      It's automated, but I've found it a bit hit and miss - especially when it comes to anime in other languages.
      I think this is more a lack of knowledge on my part on good subtitle websites to pull from rather than the software itself.
      I'd definitely recommend checking out Bazarr.
