His eyes really sell the character. He looks like he's stalking prey half the time he's on stage. Very powerful acting 10/10 , plus Mate is hot so he gets bonus points for that
Mate is my favorite Death. Not only is his voice seductive and edgy, it is so powerful. And he has a wildness in his play that makes Death both dangerous and attractive.
When my neighbours celebrated a birthday party at midnight and were playing LOUD music for hours, I waited till they made a break around 3 a.m. Next I went out in the garden, turned on the volume on my phone and played that song. (Of course not because Death sings it 😉) From that moment on I never had any problems with nightly interruptions. No matter if they got the message or were just amazed by his voice, either way I had the last dance.
The best Death for me. Maybe because I saw this version first..but still I love it the most. The Korean one is really good too and I really liked the Japanese one because the all women gave Death more androgyny.
Are you guys seriously arguing about who's the better Tod? I find it hard to compare when both actor plays the character so differently. Mate plays Death as arrogant and posessive while Junsu plays him as an emotional maniac which is totally fine. Both actors are great okay.
Actually it's "Tod" (Death). I prefer Máté, but that's maybe because I am german and because I like his cute accent when he's singing German (he's from Hungary ;-) )
While I absolutely loved this production, I liked the costumes of the Dutch production with Pia so much more. The dress were opulent, quite historically accurate and the wig was just stunning. Mate is hands down my face death tho .
To me, the Korean version (with Junsu) was more singing first and acting afterwards, while this version is more about acting first and singing in second. I happen to like this version more, but I also believe that our idea is influenced by what we think is attractive. I am sorry, I really love Junsu, but I would not fall in love with the Death he portrays. I would definitively fall for Mate though, and probably try to join him. Others, though, would fall for Junsu's Death more...
That's why I like Mate's interpretation that Death will appear as whatever is most attractive to the person he is drawing away. So all Deaths are accurate to their individual Elisabeths and if you like one Death more then that is probably more in line with what would appear to you to coax you away from living.
Technically, I guess it's Austrian as its world premiere happened in Vienna. But yeah, a German-language musical nonetheless, written by a German and a Hungarian. And yes, Máté is phenomenal!

If I may put in my own two cents. I will applaud both versions. Junsu had a better voice and more control in his voice. However Máté and the woman were more into it. She actually moved around whereas in the Korean version she didn't. This version is more rough, but with Junsu's version you can tell he isn't trying to hurt the woman, it was just a choreograph. And the fact that Junsu was more showy with his theatrics. And also the design and budget for both shows were different is a big influence
Well, I think those differences come from Korean culture. I'm a Korean and in Korea, it has been kind of taboo to show physical interactions between women and men on stage. It might seem as a form of 'acting' in other countries, but it is kind of unnatural and sometimes scandalous in Korea. There are other singers and performers who don't care about it that much, but there still exist some people who are uncomfortable with these things.
But I like them both. I don't really wanna compare, but maybe it's because I knew what he was saying in this one that makes me like the German version, but Junsu has better voice control. I would say they are about equal
@@Alaqammarj I really don't care for Korean version. It is pretty boring and the acting is very cardboard. Japanese one at least has some interesting finds. Frankly speaking I prefer Mark Seibert as Der Tod. I think he has both - acting skills and singing voice. And that's only my personal opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. So is yours. If you prefer one singer over another it does not mean he is somehow better. It just means one person likes one over the other.

If you people seriously think this person was no much better than Junsu, you are going to burst into tears when you hear the other cast 'Ryu Jung Han' singing as death though he does not have any clip on the web for no fuking reason.
I watched all the German, Japanese, and Korean version of Elisabeth. But for me, Junsu is the best for Death. Not that I'm biased but I found him the scariest and loveleable Death. Let's not talk about those make-up they were wearing on him (Junsu's outfit was the most gothic for all Death), but his gesture and sing ability was the best. He could expressed the anger and love so good. Mate Kamaras is a really good musical actor, but he as Death,I'm not sure. This Death has only one expression.
I actually liked Junsu better as Death. And it's not because the fangirl in me said so. I'm judging based on the however little expertise I have in theatre (I'm from drama) To me, Junsu held more attention because of his exaggerated body movements and those looks in his expression. I don't know, but when he sang to Elisabeth, I felt as though as he was spreading his anger and twisted thoughts to me. He portrayed a really sensual and enticing Death that almost got his lover.

The Korean Elisabeth was nothing more than a block of wood.
I agree with you, Junsu's voice is more powerful. The performance though was a little more on the passive side, but I guess that comes with the Korean culture. On singing I think Junsu did best, but on acting not so much.
