What does it mean to "feel like a man/woman"? Does it just mean that in that moment you embody characteristics that are typically associated with the masculine/feminine? If so why can't a male who regularly embodies 'feminine characteristics' still be content being called a man, knowing that he is an outlier? What does it even mean to "identify" as something?
I have a hard time taking someone who self-identifies as anything seriously. Not just because it is extremely difficult to truly know yourself (making the confidence with which these self-identified people proclaim their identity suspect to me), but because to identify with anything (and to believe one is correct in saying "I am x") is, in my understanding, a misunderstanding of the word/concept of "identity". Identity is a way to differentiate between people, it allows societies to organize, you can hold people accountable by something like a government issued identity number, their Name, etc, and on an interpersonal level you can decide whom to form associations with, and how to behave towards someone based on the characteristics by which you identify them (for example if you identified someone as grumpy/short tempered, mean-spirited you might be more careful with your word choices, or you might avoid them all together). In both instances (pragmatic organization of society, and interpersonal relationships) identity is not something that you choose, you don't get to decide your institution-issued identity number, and you ultimately don't get to decide how other people see you, although you can adjust your behavior in order to influence how others see you. Male/Female is one of those things that is determined by your chromosomes. Right? Am I high? WTF is all this confusion about?

Every time I delve deep into understanding the gender spectrum and trans psychology... I think just like you!
I mean, on one hand we talk about gender stereotypes and how what we define as masculinity and femininity are just social constructs... We still insist that if someone feels things that are stereotypically associated with either masculinity or femininity then they probably are born into the wrong gender....
We still do not know what these things are.... Us girls were always taught that, "girls like pink" and liking pink is a feminine trait but we have come to realize that pink only came to be associated with femininity after the 1940s.
This is so hard on me because, I want to be tolerant, I want to sympathize with people even if it's hard for me to understand what they are going through... I want to be a nice person.
But I have questions now and with cancel culture I feel like I can't anymore.
Thanks for typing that out so comprehensively, you are very articulate.
Also, excuse me if I've made mistakes.... English is not my first language.

I think you’re right in your critique towards them using the masculine/feminine spectrum to a level where it would be very hard to apply and super hard to navigate so I'm gonna propose a simpler version. The difference is to be made between sex where one simply can be xx, xy, xyy, xyyy, xyyyy and gender where the masculine/feminine spectrum comes in. The practical implications of having a new gender for every point on that spectrum seem ridiculous but would be most aligned with the different feelings they are experiencing towards their own gender and the most including. But when I analyze it I come to the conclusion that most will lean a bit towards one of the 2 and even though they may be 70/30 I think it would be more practical for them to choose the gender they lean more towards. Because having that many different options seem logistically rough. But then there is the question of those who either feel close to 50/50 or feel like they can’t place themselves on that spectrum at all or those who sway from one side of the spectrum to another every now and then. Here we do need some kind of way for them to identify themselves so the nonbinary and they/them could come in very handy here. I know it’s hard meeting their point of view from a practical standpoint or even a purely logical one but when we see those big trends we need to respect them in order to make them feel included. It’s either that or not having any question about gender at all and instead putting down ones sex chromosomes. I try and think of gender somewhat like sexuality and have found myself understanding their perspectives better. Even though there is arguments against this genderview that aren't exactly unfounded it would be next to impossible to unwind the clock now when there are so many that already has wrapped their identity in this and there seems to be a lot of individuals who feel this way in one way or another.

I think if you want to identify as something that's fine. I would respect your wishes. But you cannot expect everyone to respect it. And like they said, giving extra rights to someone is lessening someone else's rights. You have your right to an opinion, and I have the right to criticize it. You do not have the right to make into law a special treatment because you think differently than others. Personally I don't mind at all if you would like to be called he, or she, or they or them as long as you let me know. If you get upset I use the wrong one, that is your failure to communicate. I am not going to start a conversation with "what pronoun do you like to be called. If you correct me politely I will respect your wishes. As far as making up words, and expecting others to use said words and getting law involved or even slandering that person for it is wrong on many levels.

The thing about that is this whole myth about non binary or trans people losing their shit over people using incorrect pronouns is just that. A myth. In the end, assholes exist in every shape and form. That’s just how humans function. We are as capable of good as we are of evil. I personally have yet to meet a single person who have flipped out over incorrect pronouns. I’ve been corrected, and my ego isn’t big enough to make me feel attacked. If someone just flat out refuses to refer to someone in the way they’re comfortable with, they’re just being inconsiderate assholes. Live and let live. If someone is trying to take your rights, shit on them. But don’t mistake someone correcting you with them taking your rights.

That's a really good argument, though.
If somebody tells you that they want you to refer to them as "hir", it should be perfectly okay to say, "Yes, I'll do that if you refer to me as 59127313091108451902495280891 from now on".
I live in Finland where the 3rd person is always genderless. For me, it would seem easiest to switch the English expression to use singular they. It seems people using English are already able to decipher singular vs plural "you" correctly so I would assume they can decipher singular vs plural "they", too.
And for me, somebody willing to use singular they clearly demonstrates that they are willing to do extra effort not to offend and that should be all that's ever required to avoid being labeled as hate speech.

    • @tankolad
      @tankolad 7 років тому +6

It's not about the difficulty of learning the new pronouns. It's about forcing people to use certain language in completely subjective scenarios where negotiation between two human beings should be taking place instead. And not only that, there is a huge margin for malicious people to abuse this law. They can take anyone to court over hate speech allegations by simply claiming to be gender fluid or any made up gender they want, and no one can question them, because you can claim to be "adamasgender", and anyone that tries to question that can be accused of discrimination.

Also, most human beings tell you how they want to be referred to in real life, such as sir, ma'am, mister, ms./mrs. Or how to pronounce thier name. People will typically tell you how they want to be referred.
What's delusional is this fearmongering of somehow the most marginalized group overall is leveraging their identity over people like the ones in this comment section who are suddenly acting like victims because they maybe have to be considerate of people that are different than them. So what about gender words in French? (not to mention others of the so-called "romance languages") Peterson is Canadian and French is recognized as an official language enforced by the government for Federal employees where Canadians have the right to communication in their preferred language, yet it is replete with gender biases even to articles like masculine "un" and feminine "une" depending on some arbitrary attribution of gender to a given noun. It just seems odd that this never seems to come up in discussions about gender and language. Are there alternate gender neutral articles in French? Should new ones be invented and enforced? The one noticeable feature of all of this is the immense degree of whining that happens when somebody is asked to consider some kind of change! What's the difference between your personal feeling regarding your gender identity and your personal feeling regarding your relationship to an imaginary god? If you can tell someone's beliefs from their actions, such as if you believe you can fly you will jump off a high place without hesitation, then no one believes misgendering and the pronoun game are actually real things. If you refer to any normal person by the wrong pronouns, it doesn't even register, or at worst doesn't even phase them. Meaning, that is the normal reaction of someone who knows the truth of who/what they are. Therefore we can deduce that if someone has a very divergent reaction, it casts severe doubt on what they profess to believe about themselves. They know the truth, they just don't like it. And they want the rest of the population to also deny the truth.

Traditional beliefs are perpetuated by decreasing our ability to consciously respond to people as they are
and increasing our automatic unconscious reactions to people based on what we are told that they are supposed to be.
Responsibility is a threat to the traditional beliefs. Traditional beliefs require an unwillingness to respond in order to be

I may be entirely wrong, but this is my take on it in the UK.
The UK Genders Recognition Act became law in 2004. It meant men claiming gender dysphoria had to live as a woman (impossible unless you are one in my opinion) for two years, and undergo medical procedures and hormonal treatments, before being legally recognised as women . Many men refused but still claimed they were women, and campaigned to get the law changed to accept a man as a woman purely on his say-so. The campaign gradually gained momentum, especially with trancels and Trans Rights Activists. In 2016 a government response to the campaign was published. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/535764/Government_Response_to_the_Women_and_Equalities_Committee_Report_on_Transgender_Equality.pdf
Last year a bill to this effect was put before parliament and rejected. However as medical records are data protected, you have to take a man at his word that he identifies as female. Men like Karen White.

Post Modernism is essentially the same thing as communism. In a nutshell, communism was based off of the oppressors versus the oppressed (the business owners versus the working class). In post modernism, it is the oppressor versus the oppressed (white vs coloured, business owners vs working class, etc...) What choice does this kind of policy have, other then to lead to an authoritarian nanny state? Some people may be willing to give up their freedom for the comfort of "government protection", but what happens when the person in charge doesn't like your views?... I think we all know how totalitarian states run, no matter what the initial sentiments

Key is that simply put the structure of the intellectual argument of post-modernism and Marxism are
the same, adopted from Marxism -- just with different labels. Its just profoundly lazy thinking. Easy to learn
and allows you to win any argument (in your own mind) without much effort. Foolish since it dismisses
      complexity, creativity and intellectual curiosity.

Why would it be incomprehensible to except that there are people, not only with mixed genitals but some without genitals at all in spite of chromosomes? This recognition is not Marxist while forced outcomes I suppose would be. The spirit of the law is not forced equal outcomes but equal opportunity and equal rights. The Charter says that you can ultimately take a case to the supreme court if you are charged with discrimination or hate speech. Having listened to Dr. Peterson a lot I think at least, part of the problem, extends from things he says like 'I don't automatically respect anyone. They have to earn my respect'. He certainly has the right to think that way but it flies in the face of respect for humanity in general and the democratic notion of giving the benefit of the doubt, in particular. It would seem to be less confrontational to respect people until they cause the loss of respect.

How? By the admission of the lawyers at the University of Toronto in their own letter (apparently) disagreeing with Peterson, the bill (in tandem with the human rights code) is said to increase legal penalties for certain behaviour when "discriminating" against someone by refusing to use their chosen pronouns. That's literally legally enforced compelled speech. They also say that they think it "unlikely" that it will be used to prosecute pronoun misuse on it's own, meaning it IS possible as the law is written.
