Brilliant video and well explained for a novice like me. Best thing I done last year was scarify my lawn’s as I started feeding but with poor results obviously with the amount of thatch. I filled 8 tonne bags and looked terrible but few weeks later was looking great 👍🏻 thanks for posting videos.
Very informative, thank you Shaun. It’s still a bit damp here in the North East , maybe a week or two away from using the scarifier. Good luck for the new season. Would love to see a couple of videos , using the back pack sprayer, putting down weed killer and feed to the lawns. 👍
@@LawnRight Yeah I've been there, customers rarely pre cut despite me asking them too. Makes a world of difference to the scarifying 👍 Have a great cultural period. Vids are great bud
Love the videos and the humility with which you create them. Curious, I’ve not seen you use a heavy drag mat after overseeding to push the seed closer to the dirt layer. Do you think they are not of value? I have one, and I can say when it’s really wet it doesn’t do a lot outside collect the seeds :)
Nice one Shaun, nothing like starting the season off with an easy one, bet you had a couple of beers after that one was finished, ps kudos to your new assistant for getting stuck in 👍
I will be scarifying very soon. I'm waiting for my daughter to come back from abroad in March so she can help. I have a 2in 1 scarifier and cant wait t use it. Great entertaining video Shaun.
When I first bought my einhell scarifier I did exactly the same thing as you 🤣 Destroyed a piece of lawn as I was using the steel tines at the time. Huge lawn shaun and good explanation of how to scarify correctly 👌
Thanks Graham. Thankfully this didnt do any real damage on number 6.. it was wet so just sunk in. Dont kidn destroying my own but when it's someone else's.. well.. 🤣
Oops… reverse remembered scale after months of no use bites user again. Well done for owning up on video. 😁 Gonna nip the top off the “inherited” lawns tomorrow. Grass is dry enough to test the new mower but soil is quite wet for scarifying, it is a spongy and mossy clay-based mass which has not been done for 15years or so. I have a new 2 in 1 to give it hell, so really need to let it dry some more if I want any green left at all.
Hi great channel. We have a lawn that is almost completely moss. The grass hardly grows, and the ground feels very hard. Parts of it also has fungus from the moss. It’s a very large area - our garden is half an acre. What can we do to stop further deterioration.
Hi Jane.. scarify and aerate to begin. But with the amount of moss be prepared for a lot of seeding. If you join our private facebook community you can share pics for better advice facebook.com/groups/lawnrightcommunity/?ref=share_group_link
I guess it comes with time, trial and error. Over the years estimating how long a job takes and pricing accordingly. My prices aren't perfect by any means so still tweaking
Great stuff Shaun. My lawn is kept at roughly 3". When time comes to overseed how low would you cut it? I'm worried it might out compete the new seed if I don't take it down far enough. Thanks
I'd be looking to cut it as low as you can as you'll be looking at 2 to 4 weeks after seeding before you can think about mowing again. Thanks Michael 😊
Hi it's a leaf grabber.. be wary as cheaper models with thin metal handles are very cheaply made and bend at the middle pivot quickly. These are more robust and have last me several years
Where exactly could I get very specific information about sulphate of iron? I’m based I Ireland. People here just throw it on the lawn and scarify when moss and even some grass get black. Usually after 2-3 days.
@@rafalretkowski7103 I'd try a supplier such as pitchcare.com or agrovista. They have reps that will know products inside out.for me I use 800to 1000grams of powder in 20 litres of water.
Hi Liam only time I have issues with machines is if theyve been sat for a while..and also if fuel has been left in. This happened to me a few weeks back.. thankfully I use briggs and Stratton fuel saver additive which helps.. but anyway try removing the Ie filter cover and filter..try afew pulls.. if no joy.. top it up with fresh fuel to the top..try a few pulls..if no joy wait 5 or so minutes and try again .otherwise I'm not sure sorry
If you're on top of the work and it's done regular then the spring should be enough.. it's less aggressive.. for solid blades will be more aggressive and pull more out but theres chance of ripping our grass too and possibly end up needing seeding... however if your steady and careful you can use either and just tease thatch out bit by bit
Hi I'm not sure to be honest.. if you mean a mower that has interchangeable cassettes then yes would work fine, but if you mean a special blade fitted to a typical rotary mower I'm afraid I've not ever tried them

I always love how much actually comes out after a scarify, makes you realize that there is method in the madness 🤣

Yes same to you mate! Hopefully soon
See what you did wrong Shaun, you should have asked that nice young lady to ask for the like. I smashed it anyway!
👍😊😊 thanks Robbie
You are very honest 😊
😊🙏🙏
Grass very wet here in Scotland. I've had my lawn mower serviced and can't wait to get started in spring. Probably not for another month.
Aww that sucks... I forget I've started really early.. just the luck of the draw 😳😥
A little tip. Mow the lawn short prior to scarifying then mow again when you've finished
Yeah usually do, but the grass want too long on this occasion.customer mowed the rest of the lawn with her ride on while I took the waste away

Shaun brilliant as ever next time I will give you a hand mate
Thanks Dave!

Plenty moss out of that mate. Good work there mate.

Cheers Carl! Have a good day!
Thank you for sharing your video! When do you think is the best date to start over seeding your lawn?
Hi the best is going fully into spring so april would usually be fine 😊
@@LawnRight Thank you

some graft in that one mate 💪 hope you paid her well😂
Ha ha ha.. havent finished it yet.. working tomorrow to get it finished.. havent discussed pay 🤣
Hi if I was doing that job in dublin it would be a min 2 day job for min 2 men. Good luck withe that 1.
Thanks... I've not done a lawn that thick ever since! I think it was something like 20 tonne bags.. And took 2 days ☺️
Very impressed what’s the make and model of the scarfier mower 🤩🤩
Thanks! Stihl rl540 😊👍
Hi Sean, what's the name of that green double tool that picks up the thatch, think I'll need one soon. Ta

I’ve got that same Stihl Scarifier. Have you had any issues with starting it at all?

My Scarifier has a Spring Tine Cartridge and a Solid Blade type...Which would you recommend for a yearly dethatch..?

Do scarifying blades for a lawnmower work
Hi I'm not sure to be honest.. if you mean a mower that has interchangeable cassettes then yes would work fine, but if you mean a special blade fitted to a typical rotary mower I'm afraid I've not ever tried them
@@LawnRight they are advertised on the net and at about £20 I thoughtb they looked ok
hey,
what do you do with the waste?
Usually try to get most in customer bin but if theres a lot I will take it to a local farm that recycles green waste.. £10 per load
I'm surprised you didn't do a mow first.
I know I know... me too... beginners oversight 😁.. hadn't used the machine for a good 4 or so months and was too eager together started
Looks like you could have given the grass a cut first first to reduce ther the effort required by scarifier?
Yep def agree.. believe it or not I do normally ask customers to do this.. lesson learned 😪🤭
Would mowing the grass first before you scarify
Yes definitely give it a mow reasonably short.. if you'll be seeding you can scalp it 😊👍
Amazed you've got time to make a video when you're working on a lawn of that size.
😊 took some doing.. timelapse and a few others when she wasnt there 😁
