I really love your style of videos. You keep it short, straight forward, and you've had some more original ideas and messages then others I've watched. I wish you would post more but I suppose we could argue quality over quantity. Thank you for all you've inspired in me. I just subscribed so I can see your newest video the moment it comes up (hopefully soon!!!) Much love all the way from Canada :)
All good ideas except the one about taking appliances off the kitchen counter. We can't do that in our tiny kitchen. We hardly have space for pots and pans. Plus, I like the tea kettle as a decorative element. Otherwise, very good advice.
I also have limited space under the counter and I won't put a toaster in there as crumbs could fall out and attract mice there in the dark. My toaster stays on the counter where I can shake out the toaster over the sink and wipe crumbs off of the counter.
I place my toaster in a plastic shoe bin to catch the crumbs when I place back in the cupboard. No matter how many times I shake it out crumbs inevitably still fall out. I let it sit out for a few minutes to cool after use and put away. I dump the crumbs that fall out into the trash. Or sometimes give them to the dog on top of her food.
I’ve thrown out so much junk lately. Two loads to Goodwill. Old curtains and so on burned in the fire pit. Threw out boxes of tarot cards, old books, jewellery and the list goes on. All junk I didn’t need. I feel much better being a minimalist. My mind abs soul can breathe without clutter. ❤️ My motto is: why be so materialistic? It’s not like you can take it with you when you die.
I like to use a clothes basket. I fill it and empty it - picking things up while placing things where they belong - all in one or two rounds around the house.
My rule is to never leave a room with empty hands. I’m always looking around to see if there’s something I can put back in its home while I’m going that direction anyway. I’m not so sure about donating what’s sitting on your cluttered surfaces. Usually it’s what is buried in your cabinets/closets that needs to be donated & the stuff you have out is what you’re actually using. I guess it’s different for everyone though.
Yes, and another tip is don't donate or throw out someone else's stuff. That' asking for trouble. Even commonly shared items you yourself don't use, may be used regularly by another person in the household and will be sorely missed.
I'm loving all your videos on decluttering and organising. My son is picking up my bad habits so for both our sakes I am doing things step by step. Am doing well with counter and dishes. Thank you
The 2 minute rule I call commercial cleaning because I get up and clean/tidy up during TV commercials. (Please don't hate me for wasting my life watching TV. 🙄)
I don't watch TV anymore but when I did that's exactly what I used to do so during one commercial break I would clear the table and during another I would load the dishwasher. of course this was 20 years ago in dishwashers actually worked and clean dishes so you didn't have to practically wash them by hand before putting them in. or I would get my things ready to take a shower and then when the TV program I was watching ended I would go take my shower.
He needs it tighter on the sides and thinned out. Looks like a badger on his head. Obviously his hair is super thick, which is generally preferred, but I would go for a different style myself. I’m not super into the badger-head look, but that’s just my personal preference.
Love your videos! Since I started watching, I have "decluttered" the people I subscribe to on this channel. If they cannot be efficient in their message, like you, they are gone! I don't want to waste time in my day! Thank you for pushing me to always improve!
I don’t have the cabinet space to put all of my small appliances away, plus my counters are deep so the coffee pot and other small items that are out for ease of use do not get in the way.
Yes - they should say IF your counters are crammed AND you have copious drawer space AND at least one adult has no other interests/responsibilities THEN consider stowing your appliances out of sight. But something you use every day you should not have to unpack each time.
M locascio, it may not be feasible, but I bought a small storage cabinet just high enough to also be used as counter space. I “stole” some room for it in an awkward spot of my tiny kitchen. I keep my burr grinder and whatever small appliance I’m using currently on top-I’m on a smoothly binge this month, pesto and hummus will be on tap soon, toast when it gets cold again. Blender, processor, toaster are stored below when it’s not their turn.
You probably won't read this but: i watched this video a few months ago. And normally, these minimalism all have the same things: declutter this, declutter that, get rid of this etc. etc. BUT the 2 min. rule stuck with me since i heard it in this video. And it made such a big difference in my life, so i searched for this video again to let you know - it really works. Thank you!
The idea of putting away the coffee maker is mind-blowing! The other stuff, I already do (yay!), but it has never occurred to me to put away the small appliances.
New subscriber here. Sometimes it's hard for me to finish cleanup, for example in the kitchen, all at one time. I have back problems. So, I start, then take a break for at least 15-30 minutes. Maybe I will load the dishwasher, then take a break and later go back and start a skillet soaking and throw out trash left on the counter. It's just too painful for me to stay in the kitchen until everything is done. I think to avoid procrastination, you don't have to finish, you just have to start
Something that I find helpful is “one touch”. While you have something in your hand, like a jacket or bag, don’t put it down only to pick it up again later. Just put it away. I can’t remember where I heard it, but when I go to put something down, I think: One touch!
Joshua. One of your best videos in my opinion. Many things people can work on. I believe a lot of the philosophy as you. The cleaning after meals. Appliances put away. Mail sorted right then. In my eyes you’re a true minimalist where I hear a lot of people justifying their behaviors or excess stuff.....
I was raised in a family where your tips were simply daily routine. I still live my life continuing these routines. And when I do bring something into my home that ends up being unsuitable for its purpose, its immediately removed. When I started decluttering 6 yrs ago, it was this type of clutter that tidily filled my cupboards. 🤪
Great video. We keep a basket near the door in a room for things that we don't have time to do right then. Every time we leave the room it goes with us to be put away. We try to tidy throughout the day.
Being a tidy (not OCD) person I listen to habits I’ve been doing forever. Small efforts extended to everyday living yields big (good) results. It all matters! 😊👍
Hi I am Candy from Singapore I have watch all your videos and beginning to love them and follow. Why not do a video your house tour? I am eager to watch them.
Great suggestions. My only disagreement is with putting the toaster in a cupboard. Toasters have a lot of crumbs in them and when you pick one up there will likely be crumbs on the counter. Keep a toaster in the cupboard and you could attract mice. I keep my toaster on the counter so I don't have to deal with getting crumbs out of the cupboard. For me it's easier to just to keep the toaster next to the microwave when the toaster is not in use. Too I'm close to being if not actually disabled and I can't do all that bending to get something in and out of a cupboard below the counter. The spaces above the counter are few and full.
I always have a stash collecting for donation every week. Things to get rid of just keep popping up. I wish I could live with less, but I think I've got our home down to the bottom line. Not too much on the walls, and everything else that is out is either plants...to cleanse the air...or items that we use every day, but I'm still working on it! I keep a few cleaning supplies in every bathroom and give sink, counter, toilet and mirror a quick wipe down as needed. Great inspirations as usual.
The more plants the better, I've read about 2 plants per 100 square feet , but any is better than nothing, especially in the rooms you spend the most time in. The bedroom is important, since this photosynthesis occurs at night, while most of us are sleeping. Opinions on the best plants for removing toxins out of the air vary; peace lily, rubber plant, palm, english ivy, fern, spider plant, aloe vera. If you don't have a very green thumb, I have found that the spider plant, snake plant, and aloe vera are the easiest to maintain. Hope this helps.
One thing that has really helped us is to keep a "donations" box by the entry door. That way, we always have a place for items we'd like to purge, as we come across them. We also have some reusable shopping bags and hooks there, for things that need to be returned (like store returns, or library books), which keeps those items from turning into clutter while they wait for the next errands day to come around.
Great advise! I had to learn the hard way. We are selling out home and the realtor said, you have too much clutter, knickknacks, family photos, ect. At first I took offense to his comment but I had to listen up and clear it out! Omgosh it's one of the best things we've ever done, it's so freeing! I'm going start out clutter free in our next home!
Here's a great hack to clean the bathtub and surround: put a couple inches of water in the tub, squirt a little dish soap around in the tub, use a sturdy, stiff broom (not corn) to scrub the tub and surround. This is so quick and easy. No more bending and on your knees stretching. Amazing.
He's a good life coach, I wonder why not many people are watching his videos. I think this shows that it's not just about quality but the way the message is convey. I've seen other minimalist guy just talk and talk in front of the camera but he has reach 1 million subs. Now I understand that It's just about producing content and reaching a community through engagement.
I like all the ideas except for clearing off the kitchen counters. One thing I can't stand in a home is a sterile look. That creates a cold feeling. Leaving out a few small appliances on a kitchen counter doesn't hurt a thing. When I had my professional organizing business one thing I taught people was how to create a cozy home.
I agree. Stainless steel kitchens look so uninviting to me. My counter space is very limited but my walls have all sorts of kitcheny things I got while traveling the world during my time in the military.
Omg, I do every single thing u said, even b4 I didn't watch this video. Feel so amazing to here from a expert about this habits that I m doing my whole life ....👍😊
But, you can also put off things that take days to do for 2 minute tasks. You will end up procrastinating, or wasting time. Let's say you want to build a table, for example. It will take more than 2 minutes. The problem is you can keep doing 2 minute tasks, and never get that table (or other) project done. Also, there are alot of gaps between 2 minute projects, so you waste time that way also.
@@vshah1010 lol that's exactly what I do 😂🙈 as soon as a big project is scheduled, I start doing insignificant short projects as a "procrastination technique master", hahahahaha
Toaster or toaster ovens are hard to put away. Can anyone manage to get all of the crumbs out? I sure can't and it leaves crumbs behind every time you move it. Everything else that stays out on out gets used multiple times a day. Great tips. Very inspiring, as usual.
I remember when kids were not bored....We had chores...and it seemed like Mom never sat down much unless she was sewing or helping us with homework. Dad was always fixing something or working on the car or in the garden or teaching us how to do something.
So...why didn’t you do what it took to instill that in my generation, hmm? What held you back? Because here I am, along with most people my age working full time WHILE having kids WHILE keeping a nice house and you’re sitting on here complaining.... you know how I learned to sew a button? Google! Because your worthless ass generation wasn’t there to help, you were just rotting away into obscurity. Want to know how I learned all the rest? You guessed it! Your old asses did NOTHING for us and now you sit around on your far asses complaining about us. Well...boo hoo. 😝
@@Kirsten_is_cursed10 I cannot speak for the environment in which you were brought up in that caused you so much pain. But there comes a time when you decide that it is worth it working and raising kids and keeping house. I worked TWO jobs. I had the house, the kids, the cars and t he yard to look after most of my married life. My husband had work that kept him away a total of 9 out of the 22 years we were married. He was home just enough for my three boys to know they had, for awhile, a father here and there. I had a good friend who watched my kids while I was working and we traded sitting them when they were too young to be left alone. Those kids still keep in touch with me. We moved many times in those 22 years and had over 19 addresses as the children grew up The kids learned to make friends wherever they ended up at the new neighborhood and school. They turned out well rounded and hard working. Two went into the military and one is a policeman and they have given me 15 granchildren and 2 great grand children. It wasn't easy, but we worked together as a team and as a family. You find what works and just do it. You will be quite a strong woman later in your life for the experiences you are going through now. Cheer up and move forward and be positive. I found it not easy, but doable, to hang in there when the going gets rough. It sets an example for your kids. No matter what life hands you..... it doesn't last forever....and that includes the good and the bad. Just hang in there. I wish you were near so I could take you under my wing and mentor you and help you with moral support and friendship. I wish I could just reach out and help you with the weariness and frustration that you are going through. I would teach you to sew on buttons and garden and fix things that break down around the house. I would show you how to engage your kids and yourself together in everyday tasks and have fun at the same time... no matter how tired you came home from your job. Our laundry days, house cleaning time and yard work was a circus. Our "fix it" days were full of grease and dirt and laughter. We all messed up the house so we all cleaned it,. We cooked together. We took off together to the movies or the pool or the bowling alley when we were finished. There are many of us of the older generation who still are out here and who care about our kids and everyone else's and are willing to support your efforts in making a more enjoyable life for yourself....no matter how many the duties and problems that come up. I just passed on what my parents taught me....my kids are doing the same thing.
It's amazing to me that these things aren't common sense to a lot of people now a days. It's also amazing to me the excuses people make to continue to be lazy, nasty and to continue living with all the clutter. What happened to people wanting to live in a clean house?
First time I ever heard “take the toaster off the counter”. I thought that was where it belonged!😂 I use it everyday but like he said “ only about 3 minutes”. After consideration, I’m putting it away. I have a feeling that It will keep me from further cluttering my very minimal counter space. Thank you for so many good tips and hacks.
@@JoshuaBecker I have absolutely zero cupboard space to store my toaster, and honestly, I doubt I would store it even if I did. It's one tip that just does not resonate with a lot of people.
Thanks for keeping your videos short and the topics interesting. Often I don’t have time or feel like watching something that goes for too long. Keep up the great work :-)
I'm good on everything except putting appliances away. Are you kidding? Toaster crumbs and coffee dribbles in drawers? Wipe those puppies down, leave them on the counter, and let them shine as part of an efficient, hard-working kitchen (does not apply to mixer, food processor, or whatever you don't use more than once a week). Everything else has been part of my daily routine since downsizing a couple of years ago. Life is so much easier and calmer now!
Great and calming video. Please guide us how to become minimalist when you have big family and to many guests frequently visit your place. This concept is very hard to follow for our Indian culture.
I love the paper idea! I have tried a Sunday basket, a command center and a filing cabinet with 6 drawers with broad categories and they all get cluttered!
slowly, but sure......So xcited on my journey to minimalist living. can see n feel the benefits already, in our home, since I start doing these habits daily......thanx for sharing, myfaveis " make dish washing as part of ur meal " !AWESOME ! Greetings from Indonesia.... 🌼👋
I always make the bed but then I like to fold the bedding neatly open so it gets well aired. Still looks neat and minimises the problem of dust mites etc. Then I just fold the bedding up again when I get home. (Mrs L)
Agreed, this is what my mom taught me to do, air out the bed, and washer and dryer, oven, etc. Anything that gets really hot and/or steamy. Also, open windows daily for fresh air. These all make a huge impact on air quality and keeping items fresh and new.

I really love your style of videos. You keep it short, straight forward, and you've had some more original ideas and messages then others I've watched. I wish you would post more but I suppose we could argue quality over quantity. Thank you for all you've inspired in me. I just subscribed so I can see your newest video the moment it comes up (hopefully soon!!!)
Much love all the way from Canada :)
Fantastic! I do most of these since I was a child, my mum has been a great teacher!
I agree with your second point completely. When my storage spaces aren't overfilled, I'm less likely to have cluttered counters, dressers, etc.
bfree247365 I do that too! It’s amazing how much gets done even in a couple of minutes. 😀
I exercise during commercials...I walk to improve circulation in my legs.
What a great habit. Tha k you for sharing. Who could ever hate you for watching tv?
@@eavening4149 we call it "the boob tube" 😂😂 watching TV can be a major waste of time
I can’t believe the amazing ness of this guy’s hair
Lol right? It's pretty glorious.
Lol yup
i like the hair colour and style, too!
It's a mane, amazing
Me neither! Especially as we share a small kitchen with my mother. 2 households in a fairly small space.
I Know 😊
Yes - they should say IF your counters are crammed AND you have copious drawer space AND at least one adult has no other interests/responsibilities THEN consider stowing your appliances out of sight. But something you use every day you should not have to unpack each time.
for the ones with small kitchens do you all have tips I have no cabinet space or a pantry Thank you
M locascio, it may not be feasible, but I bought a small storage cabinet just high enough to also be used as counter space.
Great ideas! I do a couple of them already but I will definitely apply the rest to my life.
I also clean house before I leave it. You always come home to a clean house. Zen achieved. 😏
I taught my children to leave a room like they found it.
Thank you!
Awesome. And yes, of course I read these!
I also heard the saying “ dont put it down, put it away” same thing 👍🏾
Learned O.H.I.O from a friend. Only Handle It Once. I live in Florida but say OHIO to myself on the daily :)
Those words are helpful, thanks for sharing. I love little phrases that help me remember things
Great tips. I used to do all these tips naturally until I got fibromyalgia. However I still try my best do what I can do and don’t judge myself.
I so relate!
Joshua. One of your best videos in my opinion. Many things people can work on. I believe a lot of the philosophy as you. The cleaning after meals. Appliances put away. Mail sorted right then. In my eyes you’re a true minimalist where I hear a lot of people justifying their behaviors or excess stuff.....
My motto is: NEVER LEAVE A TRAIL!!!! Anywhere, bathroom kitchen, bedroom, living room, CAR!!! 😁
"Never leave a trail." I like that.
Thanks!! 😊
That is now my motto ☺️
cool
Never thought of this!! I'm a pile-maker, trail-maker. Great new mindset that will help me be tidy!!
Thanks Josh. Simple and logical steps for a functional home and mind.
Straight to the point....NO bullshit!👍🏽
Very precise , very doable & easy, very useful & effective instructions. Wish he had shown us picture of his neat & clutter free home.
Thank you so much. I adore your videos. There is no "blablabla", only the key info.
I do that as my night routine. It is a ritual. I am happy when I wake in the morning to see all neat and tidy.
Agreed.
That's great advice! Keeping up with these tasks on a daily basis helps a home stay peaceful and organized.
I agree. Less stuff means more peace and quiet. Clutter is kind of noisy and chaotic.
I have multiple 2 minute projects... takes up all of my day!!!
Your videos are, short, simple and achievable. Well done.
Glad you think so!
I like to pick up as I walk by. In this way, there may be only a few things astray. It's almost like not cleaning at all. The house is always tidy.
Excellent viedo, very helpful.
Last tip is genius & will make a remarkable difference if implemented all over the house
Hi I am Candy from Singapore I have watch all your videos and beginning to love them and follow. Why not do a video your house tour? I am eager to watch them.
The “one touch rule”for me is brilliant.
This sounds like my house as well.
Do you have any idea how many plants you'd need to actually "cleanse the air"?
@@Ddrhl For fresh air, I just open a window. Plants require a lot of extra work.
Clear spaces create, a clear mind . When things have there place makes life so easy 😁
Good video, it's all about keeping on top of it daily.
I think it’s a great idea what you did with the mail. Thank you for sharing what works for your family!
I agree, and often it's impractical. Who has that much cabinet space or wants to pull out frequently used appliances all the time.
Constant plugging and unplugging can damage the cord too.
@@andrewtsai777 It all depends on how you handle the cord. If you pull from the plug itself, it's not a problem. One should not pull on the cord.
I really don't have the space, but now I'm thinking... maybe I'll make the space 🤔
always minimalizing
I agree. Stainless steel kitchens look so uninviting to me. My counter space is very limited but my walls have all sorts of kitcheny things I got while traveling the world during my time in the military.
Thankyou I just started doing this realy is nice knowing all done before returning to bed x
Thank you Thank you Thank you! Very helpful and descriptive . All your videos so far have been a great help
Omg, I do every single thing u said, even b4 I didn't watch this video. Feel so amazing to here from a expert about this habits that I m doing my whole life ....👍😊
This is a game changer!!! Thank you!!!!
Gretchen Rubin’s 2 minute idea is actually from David Allen’s “Getting Things Done” system. If a task will take 2 minutes or less, do it immediately.
i have that book.. i love it!
Agreed, credit where credit is due.
Wow, could have done this video! Have done these thing all my life...thanks mom! Good job Joshua.
Love the visual examples 🙏
Toaster or toaster ovens are hard to put away. Can anyone manage to get all of the crumbs out? I sure can't and it leaves crumbs behind every time you move it. Everything else that stays out on out gets used multiple times a day. Great tips. Very inspiring, as usual.
1=done 2=done 3=done 4=done 5=done 6=done, I guess I am doing better than I sometimes feel I am doing.
there were two # 4s
thank you. I removed my appliances of my kitchen counters. It has changed my life!!! I'm free!! paper piles are next.can't thank you enough 🙏🌈💪💃
Already doing all that except Item 7... 👍 wil put that to practice. Thanks!
I am glad I do have all the habits so far... But still need to remind myself. Thanks for sharing
It's sad because there was a time when all this was just considered common sense.
I remember when kids were not bored....We had chores...and it seemed like Mom never sat down much unless she was sewing or helping us with homework. Dad was always fixing something or working on the car or in the garden or teaching us how to do something.
my sentiments exactly

Dear ur reply motivates me to be positive
It has meant too much to me a mom handling three kids school going
Thanks 🙏
It's amazing to me that these things aren't common sense to a lot of people now a days. It's also amazing to me the excuses people make to continue to be lazy, nasty and to continue living with all the clutter. What happened to people wanting to live in a clean house?
if you research the issue, you would find out that hoarding is genetic. For some people it's a real battle. No need to judge at all.
Aesthetically pleasing & straight to the point! Great video!
I do all the things u said except the donate box. Will start it from now 😊
First time I ever heard “take the toaster off the counter”. I thought that was where it belonged!😂 I use it everyday but like he said “ only about 3 minutes”. After consideration, I’m putting it away. I have a feeling that It will keep me from further cluttering my very minimal counter space. Thank you for so many good tips and hacks.
That's always a tip I get pushback on, but I love it. Thanks for the kind words, and good luck with your minimalism journey.

Keep up the great work :-)
There isn't alot of males talking about this, and I am glad you are so I can see your prespective on this.

Awesome advice and it's all so true...it's honestly and clearly shared!👍
Great ideas and very helpful.
I paused this video and set a 20 minute timer to pick up random things I needed to get done 🙂 thanks for that!
Nice!
I put my toaster and coffee pot away after each use and I don't have crumbs and coffee dribbles in drawers- are you kidding me
Toaster in the cupboard sounds like an invitation for the mice.
Thank You 🙏🏽 ❤️ 😎 💙
Great and calming video. Please guide us how to become minimalist when you have big family and to many guests frequently visit your place. This concept is very hard to follow for our Indian culture.
I like the kitchen idea
(Mrs L)
Wayne Loveday - I also do this! Keeps that clean fresh smell all week!
Agreed, this is what my mom taught me to do, air out the bed, and washer and dryer, oven, etc. Anything that gets really hot and/or steamy. Also, open windows daily for fresh air. These all make a huge impact on air quality and keeping items fresh and new.
Same here.
Ive been doing these habits for years was hoping for other useful tips!
Clean kitchen counter top is very difficult but I will do.
