- Presentation of the yacht 'USS Potomac' to Danny Thomas - Elvis' way of helping St. Jude Children's Hospital; he donated it to them to sell as a fund raiser and it was sold during the same year for $75,000.
The presentation was done on February 14th, 1964 in Long Beach, CA and along with other media, even a film crew was there to capture the event.
Danny Thomas....His Hospital has HELPED thousands of children and my family.
As a longtime St. Jude Children's Research Hospital supporter God bless and thank you to Danny Thomas and Elvis.

Elvis was so generous then and remained generous for the rest of his life. What a handsome young man with a glorious voice. I wish that Elvis would have never met Tom Parker. He was the one that robbed Elvis of 50 percent of Elvis's earings and kept Elvis from ever touring any other countries to play because he was an illegal immigrant and knew if they traveled to another country that he would be deported. He used Elvis until Elvis passed and then used him after death until a judge put a stop to it. The judge told Precilla that he recommended that the Presley family never do any more business with Tom Parker. R.i.p Elvis.
As much as you or I don't like him, Elvis needed someone to handle his finances as it wasn't his strength.
Looking at how popular Elvis is still today, it can make you wonder just what direction his life would have taken otherwise.
Gladys especially and also Vernon didn't trust the man and she was swayed to sign and him as well.
@@annettefluit3496 not sure how much you know, but Vernon was a big supporter of the Colonel. The Colonel didn't handle Elvis' finances, Vernon did, though that was just as bad. You are right that Gladys did not like or trust Colonel. The few times Elvis was trying to leave Colonel, Vernon was the one in the end, to convince Elvis not to leave him. Colonel had set Vernon up with part of Elvis' merchandising deal, though not a big percent, it was still a lot because a lot of money came from merchandising, way more than Elvis knew. Colonel was a crook, a cheat, a con man who could convince an eskimo that he needed ice. It's also believed now, that he was a murderer too, the reason he fled his homeland on no notice to his family. They did not even know where he went or that he went. I personally believe Elvis would have had a much better career and life had he dumped Colonel as early as 1960 and most definitely by 1968. I think Colonels handling, or mishandling, of Elvis' career is the reason for Elvis decline, more than any other reason. I could get into this even more but that's enough, for now.
Parker made millions but so did elvis so elvis was was just responsible so everyone do some research not crap you read on the internet

Elvis bought it in Jan of 64 for $55,000..gave it to MOD in March who then sold it for $65,000.Later the boat was bought by drug runners,confiscated in 1980,and in disrepair sank in San Francisco Bay. Being that it had been the presidential yacht of FDR since 1936,two years after it was built,FDR's grandson used a $2 million dollar grant to restore it and it is now docked in Oakland and used as a museum that makes trips across the bay on occasion.

Incredible film...never seen it before. At that time, the Beatles had just arrived and made an impact on the Ed Sullivan Show. Amazing moment in time. Elvis looks amazing and actually one can almost see how he was actually in real life it seems as the films is pretty clear. He looked like no other.

It had been about three months since the assassination of president Kennedy, and the Beatles were being imported from England to America, and they had just gotten their first number one song, and so after about a decade of the teenagers of the 1950's an explosive and new teenager was about to come alive that would create the hippies of the 60s in just about three years from that moment, and Elvis would just have to wait And see it happen before returning back to the spotlight at the end of 1968.

I think if Elvis had toured in 63, the Beatles would not have been able to completely knock him out of the top spot like they did, but that colonel.

I found this infuriating!!! Danny Thomas was very rude! He made comments about how hard it would be for a charity to "deal with that".
When Elvis would try to talk, Thomas would take over, talk over, interrupt, or answer for Elvis. He was demeaning and certainly not respectful! Elvis was humorous, patient, kind and a gentleman. He had and knew the answers, but wasn't given a chance to really talk. Luckily he didn't resort to karate!! LOL 😉

Elvis influenced the Beatles period. If Elvis was allowed to go to England and Europe, then would had been a very very different story. Beatles was a band not as individuals. Elvis was a Megastar before anyone heard of Beatles. I reckoned eventually the Beatles will be forgotten just like other bands. But Elvis legacy will continue. It is now 2021 and people of all generation are finding out about him and his music. Some people are ungrateful. When something is given big or small, it is not about its value but accepting something with gratitude!!! That guy that made rude comment was unprofessional and ungrateful!!!

He and Parker only did it for publicity. His entourage talked about how he bad mouthed doing the whole thing. He wasn’t the nice guy in private as he was in front of fans and press.
Maybe for Col. Parker but not for Elvis. He is well known for his generosity and many people had vouched for it. He helped a lot of people from his relatives, friends and even total stranger and organizations without letting the press know about it, only after his death did we learned. As told by some Memphis Mafia, musicians and backup singers every day he would read the newspaper to check if someone needs help. You can not believe some of the Memphis Mafia who were jealous of him who betrayed and backstabbed him after his passing.To see evidence of his good deeds go to Graceland and you will see the many plaques/certificates awarded to him by numerous charitable organizstions. One of his quotes, " What is fame and fortune if you can't share them."

Elvis loved wat he did and if he earned a lot of money good luck to him money meant nothing to him , he could have saved it but he didn't he wanted to spend it share it with family & friends . I mean who is, but your statement made it sound like Elvis was a bit of a jerk. He could be at times but for the most part all reports say he was a kind, and well mannered gentleman. I know of no other human as generous as Elvis was, and that's all I need to know about what character he had.

Elvis secretly donated to dozens of charities throughout his life, with strict instructions to keep his name off the donation WITHOUT WRITING THEM OFF AS TAX DEDUCTIONS. He played many free concerts with ALL proceeds going to charity. While Elvis was in the army, ALL of his army pay went directly to charity.
He still holds the record for the most money donated to the Motion Picture Relief Fund. In 1966 alone he gave over $100,000 to charity, which today would equal about $950,000 in today’s money.
Elvis Presley did more for those in need out of the generosity and kindness of his own heart than you have ever even thought about doing. I’m sure all the people he helped with that money were grateful whether he did it for publicity or not.
Danny Thomas was a great man who created a great vision with St. Jude's. However, he hurt Elvis deeply, when privately, he asked Elvis why even bought "this piece of shit." Well, he bought the historic ship, which has the historic letter from Einstein to FDR about the atomic bomb encased inside on the desk, to be an item to make money for charity. Elvis was always getting side slapped for the good he often did.
