Jacques Johnson big beginner? Get a KLR 650 or any UPRIGHT bike. The seating position on cruisers WILL get you killed. Trust a guy who easily has 3x the miles under his belt than this guy does. He is a squid. Never ever listen to a squid.

I'm glad I started on an upright bike. The maneuverability saved me a few times. Cruisers tend to be more sluggish with the input response. Not all cruisers of course. Take the Harley riding course. They will start you on a 520lb 500cc bike for training. It will help build your confidence.

My first bike was a V-Star 950. Bought new in 2009. I'm 6'2" at over 300lbs. I love this bike! Added handlebar risers and Ultimate seats with a backrest. Comfortable, nimble, and great power! Okay, I added a bunch of other stuff for aesthetics, like V&H Big Radius pipes, chrome, engine guard, cone filter, coil cover, and other stuff. Designed and machined my own passenger floorboard adapters. Still have it, just over 10,000 km. Will trade wife and kids before this bike.

Thanks for this video I’m a bigger dude looking for a bike I’m about 6’3” 300lbs and your right it’s not easy finding a comfortable bike being so large in stature. funny thing is I was watching your video on the silver wing 500 and actually got my gigantic self on one and put some miles in with my dad a few weeks back now it was a bit awkward but it did the job we made some awesome memories and that’s what it’s all about and the bike was exactly how you described it’s a great bike and surprised me with its capabilities.

  • @michaelwhite984

Lessons learned from a 6'7" dude weighing over 300lbs for most of his riding career.... 1. Budget for suspension. As mentioned in the video, basically no bike out there is made for your weight off the factory floor. I rode stock suspension for years, but when I finally did pony up for some suspension work, the difference was night and day. The bike feels much more in control and responsive to you, as opposed to the rocking horse effect you get when you weigh more than double what the bike was set up for. 2) Be honest with yourself when you're sitting on that bike as to how well it fits you. Yes, some bikes can be modified to get a bit more legroom or raise the clipons (talking more sportbikes now, obviously), but these are incremental changes. If you don't fit, you don't fit. Thankfully, with the explosion in popularity of naked bikes over the last few years, finding comfortable options has become way easier.

    • @swskitso
      @swskitso 3 роки тому +1

@@dejanjanjic125 for larger guys a 950 is manageable. However with larger bikes it is important to know about push/pull stearing, this is not something to learn from a youtube comment if you dont know about it you need to research it.
With smaller bikes you can throw your weight around and cheat your way through turns but with a large bike its weight can get the best of you then you, when someone says the bike just wanted to go straight this is what happened to them.

A Vulcan was my first bike. I didn’t like it at first, to be honest, but I was kind of stuck with it and 6 months later I was very sad to sell it. 900 cc is really all I needed on Maui and it even worked on the gravel road out to Hana. My current BMW R1100R is grand for the leeward side of the Big Island and needs less maintenance. Any bike could be a lifetime bike but the challenge of a different bike every couple of years is what I like. There is no one bike to rule them all.

I was a fan of that platform of bike for a little while. My first new off the showroom floor bike was a 2015 Kawi Vulcan 900 LT. Loved everything about that bike - except the rear suspension. I don't know what Kawasaki was thinking, but that rear suspension was a kidney punching, spine cruncher. I used to flinch when I saw even small hitches in the pavement in front of me. I guess that is how they keep them so cheap. I put Michelin Commander II tires on it and a Mustang seat, and that helped a little bit, but it was still too harsh a ride for my (mature) body. ;) Maybe Yamaha has done a better job.

Ive sat on a honda rebel and aside from it feeling small, i have maybe an inch of handlebar movement, same with a kawasaki 500 (cant remember the name) was just moving it from one side of friends house to the other, and basically only able to steer with feet on the ground. Starter bikes for tall usually are 750-1100cc range, depending on which model, honda shadow felt lil small, but a cb (taller bike) fits just fine.

6'5 350lbs. Been riding an 85 yamaha virago 700 for a year! Yes it looks as silly as it sounds. Fun little bike though. Looking to jump up to a yamaha raider next!
Edit: Rode 2 years on the Virago. Was a great starter bike. Bought a 2010 Yamaha Raider. Night and day difference in power and comfort. But wouldn't be nearly as comfortable if I didn't have a good beginner bike. All that matters in a first bike is that you learn the basics, and get comfortable going fast on 2 wheels. -It doesn't matter what you ride, but where you're going -Shaun.

They had some 250 cc variants of that bike at my MSF class. They did end up putting the tall guys on them, so, I think you're right about them being great for tall people. They seemed pretty comfy on them. I think I would throw some street tires on them if you're not planning to use them off road. Dual sport tires tend to wear out faster on the street than street tires.

I thought id be cramped with the factory floorboards.. an thought about goin FCs... but the floorboards actually feel somewhat comfy. I have no problem shift or getting a pinched nerve or nothin.
Definitley gotta sit on a bike an put both feet up, scooch around an wiggle your butt. Cuz ya gonna sit up off it for a second an shift in the seat from time to time. Shawn does AMAZING reviews. Thats fo sho!

I've never owned a bike below 1000cc's. I'm 6'1" and currently weigh over 250. My first bike back in the '80s was a Gold Wing GL1100. It was faster than a scorched rabbit and barely anything on the street could touch it. It wasn't a full dresser so I was spared that weight and I weighed less back then, too.
I currently ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad 1600 and I'm very happy with it. I also own a 1500 Nomad, but they changed enough about the geometry and such with that bike that the 1600 suits me better. I wouldn't have any qualms recommending a Nomad or a Vulcan 900 to a larger rider who was new. If it's your first bike just don't get something new and expensive, it will bother you less if you drop it, and get engine guards.

I started off on a Triumph Sprint 900cc but never felt comfortable due to not getting my feet comfortably on the ground. I nowhavea Honda Shadow 750cc and love it. No anxiety when stopping and love riding it around, plenty enough power for me 😀

I was gonna go for my dream bike (yamaha warrior), but i couldnt really flat foot it & id have to spend a good amount of money to feel comfortable on it...plus insurance was cheaper on the 950!

I was always taught not to ever drive down the middle of the road on a motorcycle. The reason being, it is the middle where oil and other deposits will build up, especially during rain. I notice you are riding down the middle. What are you thoughts on this? Thanks.

Anything in the 650cc range works just fine. I'm 6'7" and have fluctuated from 250 to 340lbs, and my first bike was a SV650. After modifying the pegs to drop them about an inch, it was great. Once you get more confidence, jump to a FZ/MT-09. Absolutely the best big guy naked bike, once you sort the suspension. Lots of legroom, and the big banana seat lets you put yourself wherever you need to be. I track mine all the time and it's a riot, my favorite bike I've owned hands-down.

Thanks for this video... I was looking for my first bike and everyone say Rebel but it is very small and no torque/ chain transmission this was a problem for me because i want to make trips with 10.000 km so to stop every 400 km to clean the chain it's not an option 😂
I found a Yamaha Virago 1100 and i was a little bit scared i was just thinking damn this bike has a too big engine for me as a first bike but i felt very comfortable so i still looking after reviews until i see this video and you confirmed some things and thank you for this 👍
I'm confident in my driving skills mostly because i'm a truck driver so i know to anticipate problems on the road 👍
