Exactly. Back then, people were stars because of their talent at some point in time. Not so anymore. Everybody's a star and nobody knows who the hell anybody is.
Sheila is on the song and in the video....singing chorus. However, she was promised a solo. Her disappointment was realizing they were just using her to get to Prince. But she IS singing on the song (although it's just the chorus). And I'm SO grateful to be a pre-1980 baby (Gen-Xer) .....who experienced these historical moments, IN REAL TIME.
I heard they tried to pursue Prince in every single way not just Shelia E. They didn't try to hide it. For some reason, Prince never performed. Maybe he was intimidated by the star power in the room. Prince did contribute 2 songs to album. On a sidenote: Sheila was never part of the Purple Rain movie but yet she rode the wave from its popularity and continues to do so after his death.

I can understand Prince getting to sing his own part but I don't know if Sheila E was big enough to get that as well. I think maybe she forgot that this was for charity and not about any individual musician. I hope that maybe someday that she would understand that if she was able to get Prince to participate, then that in itself would have been a huge contribution from her. Even after so many many years she still does not seem to get that the bigger the star, then more copies of the song will be sold and people would be more inspired to give more. This was all about giving and not wanting or expecting anything back.

Sheila E, it wasn't about you. it was a long night, trying to record a new song to raise money for Africa, you have outed yourself as a narcissist saying you felt hurt you didnt get to sing a line in the song. smokey robinson, Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, Lindsey Buckingham, Mario Cipollina, Johnny Colla, Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Bill Gibson, Chris Hayes, Sean Hopper, Jackie Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Pointer, June Pointer, Ruth Pointe, didn't get a solo line either. prince would only do it, if he had his own cubicle (lionel ritchie on the stephen colbert show explained) and so he got left out. how disrespected do the starving people feel in africa (the reason for the song) when they have to look at their children every morning and struggle to provide them with a breakfast let alone a school or dinner. Like so much of the even the developed world, before the science age, they are being used and lied to by years of false hope in the form of religion, from pastors, priests, rabbi's, muslim preachers which tricks them into believing in a big god in the sky who sees their plight but to still accept hunger and suffering because theres a big amusement park full of love and warmth and dead relatives waiting on them in the sky, heaven or wherever area they're brought up in. Sheila E = N.A.R.C.I.S.S.I.S.T.
Well, Stevie is still around, Lionel, Smokie, Lala Hathaway, Gregory Porter, Gill Scot, Abdel, October London, Jacob Collier, MonoNeon, that's who I can think of I know I missed a few!
Bette Midler and the Pointer Sisters also did not get to sing solo. They were having several Top 10 hits and bigger than Shiela E. at that time. But I understand her frustation of realizing that she was just being used only to get Prince to come. I wonder why Chaka Khan was not invited, she was close to Stevie and Prince and just got the Best Female R&B Performance that night. Michael McDonald was also left out.
I remember when Prince died, they did an interview with Lionel Richie. He talked about how Prince was supposed to be in We Are the World and he called him up saying they were waiting on him. He didn't want sing in a song where another artist wrote the song, it was mentioned that he sent Shelia E instead. She should have been aware of this, she probably wouldn't have felt disrespected.
Sheila E you was ok.. but you'll never be considered super star status. These are the last of real legends ever this music now days is more privileged than ever and not rightfully so.
There aren't enough A-List Vocalist of their magnitude today. To pull it off. This is just my sole personal opinion & not of anyone on YT. If they use the "Living Legends" they are 70+ now!😢
PREACH! They stand up for anybody at these award shows. Put out one song, and if you win, they stand up for you. It's ridiculous. I remember when only a few people, like Aretha Franklin or Barbara Streisand, would get a standing ovation. These "artists" today have no clue what real talent is. The Grammy's have really fallen off. And I personally think that many of these "artists" are paying for their awards.
I keep leaving comments on here but just think if the amazing artists we got to grow up with. They all had so many hits and it was such a fun time for music. I feel happy that I was able to grow up with it all.
I really enjoyed the documentary but something I think they should have made clear is, although Prince didn't participate in the recording of the song, he did provide an original song called "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" which was released on the full length We Are the World 10 track album. Prince did contribute in his own way.
I haven't seen the documentary yet, but I agree, but "4 The Tears in Your Eyes" should be mentioned as well as Prince's reason why he didn't attend the studio session.
@@ucbx I agree. The only issue I had with with the documentary is, I didn't want people who didn't know about Prince providing them with an original song for the album, to think negatively of him. His name is mentioned several times in the documentary and, because they don't mention him giving them a song or the reason for him not participating in this song, it will probably make some people think Prince was stuck up or didn't care about the cause which isn't true.
I just hope they make it clear that Michael Jackson did write the song and Lionel Richie only helped with some lyrics. Michael Jackson wrote the song because it seems like lately they’re trying to push Michael Jackson’s Legacy into oblivion. Saying things like Rihanna and usher got higher ratings than anybody else in the Super Bowl, which is not true Michael Jackson’s ratings are still the highest, and I hate when they’re trying to erase his legacy because of some stupid accusations That have been proven false after 13 year investigation by the FBI, which actually have the FBI records open to the public that you can literally Google on your phone. Also, I do agree with you they shouldn’t try and make Prince look bad, but to be honest, the documentary isn’t about the song that Prince wrote, but at the same time they shouldn’t try and make him look bad either, but I think down the line people will know that prince and Michael did not hate each other. They were not enemies. Apollonia said in an interview that they were friends, and that when thriller came out, prince came to her house With a VHS tape of thriller and they sat there on the couch and watched it and she said, prince jumped up and down on the couch screaming that’s my man that’s my man, so they were friends they weren’t enemies they may have been more like Frenemies, but they didn’t hate each other, and when Michael Jackson died, apparently Prince sat on the roof and his Swedish hotel with Travis Smiley, and talked about Michael Jackson, and how genius he was from 2 o’clock in the morning till the sunrise. They both loved each other. They liked each other, and I’m willing to even bet if they recorded some stuff together that will just be locked up in volts until 50 years from now. Purple is powerful MJ forever
@@JamielPridgen68 Good to see a fellow Michael Jackson fan here. I'm wearing a Thriller hoodie as I'm typing this. Regarding them not mentioning Prince's song in the documentary, I was only hoping for a graphic towards the end of the doc, not necessarily someone mentioning it verbally. With so many mentions of Prince, I just thought that would have been the appropriate thing to do. They didn't clarify how much of the song was written by MJ and how much was written by Lionel Richie either which doesn't surprise me. I agree there does seem to be an intentional effort to either minimize or erase a lot of MJ's accomplishments. The media has been against MJ for decades and for no good reason. I'm also aware of the friendship between MJ and Prince. I've seen Tavis Smiley discussing that conversation he had with Prince, as well as, members of the NPG saying they saw packages coming into Paisley Park with MJ's name on them. Lenny Kravitz did an interview with Naomi Campbell on her UA-cam channel recalling a time when he hung out with both MJ and Prince, at the same time, lol. There's quite a few stories out there. I just wish there was footage or photos of them together so people would stop believing there was a bitter rivalry.
Quincy told all of the artist participating to, "check your ego at the door." Shelia E was not a huge star at that time and not actally the best vocally, among the women. I'm not sure why she would think that she would be asked to "lead" a solo, among greats like Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick. Also, Prince was a star but not as huge as Michael. Michael had swept the Grammy's that night winning for Thriller, even beating out Lionel, for his classic album, "Can't Slow Down." As talented as Prince was, I don't think he would have felt comfortable around Mike, as Mike would have been around him. Prince was welcome to come but it was his own ego (or insecurity), that kept him from coming. THIS recording was all about helping Africa, not chasing down celebrities to participate.
If I recall, I think We Are the World was 1985. Prince had already had reached phenomenal, worldwide success with Purple Rain the soundtrack album and film, plus he was the only artist in history (at that time) to have a song ("When Doves Cry") that topped the Pop, Black and Dance charts simultaneously. And Prince wasn't just welcome to come to this star-studded, ensemble recording for charity, he was specifically invited. Regrettably he turned it down, as I would have loved to have seen him join in, and I remember he got a lot of blow-back for not going along to get along. He was already hosting canned food drives at his concerts by then so it wasn't that he wasn't down to help for the cause--he did wind up writing an original song--"4 The Tears In Your Eyes"--and contributing it to the We Are The World album, and also made a video with an acoustic version of the same song, which was was broadcast during the global live-Aid concert event. It's possible he felt insecure in terms of him not having creative control. I don't see him having been musically insecure or intimidated by anyone there, except perhaps Stevie Wonder whom he had long emulated in terms of musicianship and songwriting. Prince was known to be so creatively controlling by so many around him in his own camp, I honestly think it would have been uncomfortable for him to be in a musical recording environment having to fight his own urges to 'produce' the WATW song. Because that was just his nature, and he was hard-wired for it. He offered to contribute a guitar solo because that's where he would feel most comfortable and with minimal risk of stepping on anyone's toes and accidentally hurting anyone's pride. He considered himself a musician first, and singer second (although he had a 4-octave range). I understand why Bob Geldoff and Quincy Jones were upset that Prince declined from participating in the singing, but for someone who could be something of an exhibitionist on stage, Prince could be on occasion painfully quiet and shy off-stage, especially when around folks he didn't know like his friends and bandmates. And so people assumed it was an ego trip on his part. Not that he didn't have an ego--by his own admission he had an ego in his youth-- but I've never thought that is what drove his choice to decline and seek out a different way to contribute to the project. I actually always thought Prince had asked/sent Sheila E. to attend the recording of this song on his behalf as she by that time had a big hit that he wrote for her, and she was closely associated with Prince at that time. I thought he arranged that as a kind of goodwill gesture. I agree that singing is not her strength--she is a master percussionist. So I don't know why she thought she should get a solo in a room full of a LOT of music legends. But Kim Carnes got to get a little singing in and she was not opera singer either, and was basically a one-hit wonder as best I can recall (but I loved her song "Betty Davis Eyes").So if Kim could get a few words in then they could have maybe given Sheila a couple seconds of a duet on the track.
@@leeharrison8222 MJ was a star since 1969. Thriller was already the biggest selling album. Purple Rain was very succesful but never at the level of Thriller, even with the Oscar for Best Original Song. Thriller was INNOVATIVE. Up until that time, we had never seen a music video turned into a mini-film. MJ and Lionel wrote the song. They both had long-term established relationships with Quincy. No way were they going to let Prince come in and chage things around; creative genious or not. Kim Carnes and Cindy Lauper were not great singers but were selling records and were much bigger stars than Shelia E, at the time., who was slick production and sex appeal. Lastly, there were too many other big name stars present who did not sing a solo.
@@ubiquity02 it wasn't even about selling records because Madonna at that point was already the biggest female pop star in the world and was not invited, also Prince was arguably the biggest thing in music at the moment second only to MJ, Bruce Springsteen was up there too.
First of all, Prince was bigger than MJ right at that particular year. One movie one Oscar a number 1 album number one singles… All in one year. Not even MJ or the Beatles did it. Michael would have been more comfortable because it was his song his idea and Prince would have been invited and directed. You see? One is the boss and the other needs to do what they boss says. Prince wasn’t going to play that game. He never had producers or anyone telling him what to do where how and when. Would MJ be comfortable in Paisley Park singing a song Prince wrote? And everyone knows Prince couldn’t really be intimidated by anyone in that room. Maybe Ray Charles or Steve Wonder…. Prince could be intimidated by James Brown or Sly Stone but they werent invited. Why? Aretha wasnt there too. Maybe It was Quincy and MJ the ones that were intimidated by these 3😂 you have Tito Jackson and ignore James??
She wasn't disrespected even though she felt that way. She might have been used to try and get prince there but she was asked to be ON the track, she wasn't invited to just hang out to entice prince over. It was a fkn honor to be working with quincy, smokey, ray, stevie, diana, dionne, etc., these people were LEGENDS already and sheila was the one who was disrespectful to these people, to the charity, and to her word. Same for waylon jennings, he walked out. I think he felt insecure around all those people he didn't know, singing some kind of choir thing overnight, he couldn't handle it and picked an excuse to walk out. To be fair, a few singers were trying to change the damn song on the fly and holding everything up and you cant presume to know people's limits of patience.
Say it. I agree with everything you said except that she was used to get Prince there. Quincy told everyone to, "check your egos at the door." The artists who didn't come, weren't missed. The recording turned out how it was supposed to be. Lastly, Shelia was not strong vocally, so I'm not sure why she's upset about not being given a solo. It should have been a honor for her just to be there around legends.

@@strauqq1Yes, there were other people there that weren't singers but I don't remember them getting solos. Sheila E was a popular musician and singer but not as big as the legends that were a part of this project. If she felt disappointed it should be because Prince didn't show up. They probably wanted to pair her solo with Prince. So since he didn't show up they used the singers they had. At least she was asked to participate on this iconic song.🎶💜🎤💜🎶

What happened to "check your egos at the door?" If u watch all the footage, the arranger was viewing folks there as instruments, not "stars". Maybe she was promised a "solo"; maybe not, but through that whole long night stuff was getting tweaked for the best arrangement that could be done in like, 12 hours. There were rock gods like Perry and Springsteen there who regularly played to thousands and loved by millions. Michael Jackson. The classic Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick...and on and on. @@edreid7872 I haven't seen the documentary yet but remember when the song came out and this is the first I'm hearing of this. But if this is true, she should have understood, even back then, how the industry works. Just because the producer tells you one thing, they usually change it up when they start recording and engineering. Shelia is a liar. I believe she was lying when she said Prince asked her to marry him. Everyone knows he was deeply in love with Vanity during that era. Shelia E has a huge ego. She was never strong vocally. Nah, she just told the truth she kept secret. They did disrespect her, though, but she should have seen it a mile away. Most of them at that point have several hits and she just had one. Cmon man, I liked Sheila E but if I was her and asked to be in that song… it would have been apparent to me that Prince was likely the actual goal for the song organizers - and that Sheila was a way to lure him over. But, it wasn’t meant to be.
I like shelia E, but I believe she's lying. Shelia E has a huge ego. She was never strong vocally. She has even said she didn't think she could sing but Prince told her she should. Yet she’s on that documentary. Why would she participate on it if she felt she was disrespected. Let’s be honest, to this day Sheila E is not and was not an A list artist. Everyone knew her as Prince’s percussionist. And if she felt that she’s going to have a part on the biggest song alongside people like Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross… then maybe she was just delusional. No one was gonna give her a solo, she was not that big even at that time, so i think she needs to cut the BS.
Listen, I love me some Sheila E. But at the time, she had to understand she was not NEARLY a big enough star to warrant being on the record. So, OF COURSE they were using her to get Prince to be a part of it.
If you watch the documentary you may understand her point. She felt she was being used/mislead just to get Prince there. It all worked out especially for Huey Lewis 😅
Now Sheila is whining again saying she is broken-hearted Paisley Park would not allow her to pop in unannounced, expecting to be able to video in the recording studio. The recording studio was already in use, paying fans who are keeping Paisley Park afloat were already there for Prince's birthday. Sheila "it's all about me" has to learn it isn't all about her and there are rules for a reason. She could have made arrangements before-hand and as a professional, she should know that
While I did enjoy this documentary, in another documentary I saw a number of years ago they showed the part where they all sung the background vocals as well with the oooooo + ahhhhhhh in the chours why wasn't that on here?? And also MJ face when Huey went out of tune a few times lol
If I remembered correctly Sheila E. was singing chorus in the video only Solo singers deemed by Quincy Jones and that's all there is to it She be grateful they ask her to be in the music video PERIOD!!
People were still recording their solos at 6am she could have been more patient and sung her solo instead of walking out and blaming people as if they lied.
There was no solo for her. They told her there would be but they wanted her to convince Prince to show up. Prince's part went to Huey Lewis in the end and he nailed it. Much better choice than Prince.
Only in the 80's could something as massive and mega sensational like this could happen. You're NEVER gonna have a time where you've got 40 plus pop megastars in the same room together, performing a song together. Sure, there are some big time noticeable names that are missing like Prince, Madonna, Luther Vandross etc (I personally believe that had he not died a year earlier, Marvin Gaye would've been on this song) but that doesn't take away the mass talent that's in this song- and all for a very noble cause, too.
No disrespect, but it was great that she was able to be a part of it at all. There were some really big names in that room with multiple hits that didn’t sing solos. I think it’s an honor just to have been asked to be there. On the other hand, if she was told that she was going to get a solo, that wasn’t very nice and it would be hard not to feel a little humiliated when you realize that they had not intentions of having you sing.
Bye Sheila. You claim you were disrespected and now you’re trying to pull the “they used me to lure Prince in” line. You want us to believe you were used but how is that so when you also played drums on bottles for MJ on Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough song for the Off The Wall album. This was years before Prince was a household name.
Sheila E was never promised a solo spot. Why? Because of her paste work association with Lionel? Everyone who had a solo had a stand out voice and were on the scene a bit longer. She was on the song in the chorus though.
I love Sheila but everyone was not going to get a solo. Smokey Robinson didn't get a solo. The Pointer Sisters didn't get a solo,.Jeffrey Osbourne didn't get a solo. There were a lot of fantastic artists who only sang the chorus and that's fine. This was for charity.
I watched this last night. Great documentary. I'm a fan of Sheila E but those who got solos were all bigger performers and more famous singers than her to be honest.
Sheila Escovedo...Has a very beautiful voice. And I don't mean like glamorous life....She sang with George duke...that stuff! I understand how she feels.
We Are the World and Sun City Artists United against Apartheid were two huge song movements created by Foundational Black Americans. To clarify, Prince refused We Are the World because people were starving in the United States and felt the efforts should have been concentrated on home. Listen to Prince's song "Hello," and he tells the story.
Yeah, because Michael Jackson wrote it. I don't know what it was about Michael that Prince didn't like. I think he didn't want to be compared to Michael who was the greatest singer dancer of all time. Prince couldn't hold a candle to MJ.
Band Aid Do You Know It’s Christmas is way better. I don’t really like We Are The World as much. It’s not as touching but I love me some Cyndi part 😂 I need to watch this documentary.
Prince liked Michael..he didn't like Quincy Jones..He went to see Michaels Bad Tour when it was in Minneapolis..he cancelled his bands rehearsal when he found out that Michael died..As far as Sheila E, he she wasn't one of them..The biggest question to me was Dan Akroyd..love him but really?
There already is a full demo of Michael singing it in demo form, came out while he was alive in 2000s in his compilation, but not the polished demo which I’d love to have. What makes me upset is Lionel and the production leaving out that Michael had the whole song done in demo form before he and Lionel worked on it. Lionel helped with wording, as Michael had main jist but was free styling on phrases, but MJ already had full concept. ua-cam.com/video/F5LdIZSPjz8/v-deo.htmlsi=HAkF_DsrFcXFkpIi

Most think 84 was big for Prince but I believe it was the beginning of his problems with industry. He was getting a ton of negative media attention for not wanting to be there and was subsequently robbed of several AMA's. Then, he turned off the Purple Money faucet by cutting the Purple Rain Tour early and refusing to record videos further releases. Michael paid his own money to do the Thriller video ensuring the album was #1 2 years after release. Prince, who recorded a song a day was 2 albums down the road by 85' and was not going to wearing a purple trench coat in 86', he was too prolific. His prolific output deprived folks of MUCH more money..a cardinal sin. Then he had this frustrating formula of releasing a hit for the 1st single on all following albums only to bait the audience into buying expiremental concept work, only the hard-core rode with him.

it wasn't about being BIG Enough" it was saving the world . if she WAS disrespected then that's in however FEELING disrespected is another and that should NOT be brought up after the fact. She should have stayed home then. PERIOD!!! 🤨😠
agreed.
Always knew she was way too self absorbed.
Exactly. She was not known enough to have a solo. She had one hit-glamorous life.
So…..you trying to say she riding on coat tails? Just askin
It can’t be done again, because that kind of talent doesn’t exist today.
They'll probably put reality TV stars on it.😮

Well, Stevie is still around, Lionel, Smokie, Lala Hathaway, Gregory Porter, Gill Scot, Abdel, October London, Jacob Collier, MonoNeon, that's who I can think of I know I missed a few!
The version from 2010 was not terrible…
The MJ solo demo of the song has been available to the public since 2004. “Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection” box set.
Sheila E you was ok.. but you'll never be considered super star status. These are the last of real legends ever this music now days is more privileged than ever and not rightfully so.
Sheila E. is a great percussionist; not a singer!!!
Why the hell would she believe they’d give her a solo line?
Lol I'm sure many others- including me!- have the same opinion 😆☺😊

*Patience*
The moment when they all asked a signature of one another... What. A. Moment.
Maybe because she and Lionell knew each other prior.
First of all, Prince was bigger than MJ right at that particular year. One movie one Oscar a number 1 album number one singles…
All in one year.
Maybe It was Quincy and MJ the ones that were intimidated by these 3😂
you have Tito Jackson and ignore James??

Well, others weren't either and they got a solo🤷♂️
@@strauqq1Yes, there were other people there that weren't singers but I don't remember them getting solos. Sheila E was a popular musician and singer but not as big as the legends that were a part of this project. If she felt disappointed it should be because Prince didn't show up. There maybe good copies for sure, but never like the first creation. This was a time in life that was wonderful. Just create & enjoy it for what it is!
❤great comment. So many people on here assuming differently.
Thats why Prince said nah im good. And made the song Hello.
I don’t blame her. It would be annoying if they kept asking her “where’s Prince?” “Where’s Prince?” “Is he coming?”
Prince steered clear of the whole thing. He was wiser than people thought. He knew what was up. He wasn't going to let them use him.
O poor Sheila e...the premise was of course all about her.

Sheila E was never promised a solo spot. Why? Because of her paste work association with Lionel? Everyone who had a solo had a stand out voice and were on the scene a bit longer. She was on the song in the chorus though.

@@Willem-The-Strange Stop the cap. First line you got from in living color tv show “music parody’s”. Congratulations you played yourself. you lol be original. K Bye
Shiela is always awesome but she wasnt a big star at the time, does she not remember this, lol. there were people singing the chorus in choir format that were bigger stars than sheila at the time so what is she talkin about, she could have joined those people and sang the chorus but she decided to leave. they definitely were using her to lure Prince because she was one of Prince's top support at the time.
I thought they released the demo version of We Are The world.🤷🏽♂️
Girl bye!! No disrespect but you were not known for your vocals at All!! With all those Superstars up there who have earned multiple Grammys and strings of number 1 hits across the world, and you felt you were disrespected? Wait a minute I think you one song or two that was popular but that was it!! Please take a seat somewhere!!
She was popular for a moment in the 80s got to admit. Saw her on American bandstand with Dick Clark, Soul train etc…..
Thanks Sheila for keeping it real❤
Maybe she thought she was supposed to get special treatment because she's Nicole Ritchie's biological aunt...
I guess some people need to learn that there is honor in keeping your mouth shut and being humble
Sorry but her getting a solo might have needed too much Quency magic to make that fit .
I never had a Prince poster on my wall but I definitely had Sheila E!
Sheila " whatever to you gurl get the f over it
Funny. Quincy, Lionel and Michael ALL knew how Prince worked yet throughout the 80's they continously tried to force him to work with them.
Lionel Richie...my favorite
Get em Sheila
It was his loss. Sad.
Lets find a negative word from 80 years ago.
It must be the lighting because they look horrible not to be mean

We are the world?
Who Dafuq is "Sheila E?"
She was the tambourine player for Prince
@@theharshtruth8563 I thought she played the woodblock ?
@@theharshtruth8563 Didn't she play the kazoo and sometimes would go
get MacDonalds for the band at the hotel when on tour?
@@RickyVanderslice She also ran the merch table in the back.
Sometimes on a slow day, she ironed Prince's blouses before
the show.
@@theharshtruth8563 I heard that Sheila was the tour bus toilet seat cleaner.
Lucky for her, she didn't have much to clean since Prince peed sitting down.
And who would they have for today to redo it? Drake,Taylor,Miley,Mariah,Rhianna,Kanye,Bieber??? Please 😂😂😂
