  • Detroit: Become Human is one of those games that is highly polarizing. Once you've played it, you can totally understand why this is the case. It's a great narrative experience but as a game it leaves a lot to be desired. We'll go into detail in this video and try to explain the ups and downs as clearly as possible. Enjoy!

    If this game didn't have Connor I would not like it half as much. He was such a great character that was also acted well, and his relationship with hank was done very well.Other than that I found the game very, very clumsy, if fun for the first time, especially since I went in blind.

      I like the Connor character and his relationship with Hank, but I don't like how unclear your objectives are for Connor. Many people have no idea how to play the character until after they have played the game a couple of times. I'm not so sure I like that. I would prefer that you know the objectives and paths you might take up front so that you can choose what you want to do. Likewise with the consequences for actions in the game. I like that actions have consequences. I would just prefer to know what they are. Some of it seems pretty random and unrealistic. In some cases, for instance, you surrender and they just shoot you. No, surrendering might ultimately lead to death, but it should lead to be captured with the possibility of escaping. Not immediately getting killed. Oh, yeah. And in another case, you are captured as expected. It's extremely random. Likewise getting shot at anyway when following police orders to disperse. That is so idiotic. No. The logical consequence of that is not getting shot at but not getting the public opinion boost that standing your ground achieves.

      Connor and Hank worked because Dechart and Brown had great chemistry and did a lot of improv in their scenes without forgetting what their characters are supposed to be. That's why they just "work".

      Connor and Hank were definitely the best characters in the game. I got everyone in the game killed on accident because I'm used to gameplay over QTEs (just went through it last week for the first time) but their scenes together were the best in the game. Markus was great in concept but not so much in execution, and I liked Kara's was introduction but it becomes weaker with the CW twist at the end.

      Kara and Alice’s escape from Todd gave me the first impression as The Last of Us 20 minute intro (even though tlou can never be beat). It was extremely emotional and my first instinct was to protect alice no matter what and holy shit did this game do a good job with it. it sort of confuses me how people dont enjoy her story because its “bland” or whatever but by far this game is on my top 3

    One thing I think they should have done differently: The game stops awkwardly every time you need to press a button or do an input. Instead of that the game should allow you to do the input a second or two before hand so the scene continues smoothly instead of stopping all the time. If you don't press anything then the game could stop and wait for the input.

    • @BrutalKnight55
      @BrutalKnight55 4 роки тому +36

      While that would certainly improve the pacing and flow, I don't think that's what the developers had in mind. From what I can tell, the inputs are meant to immerse you in the world by making you watch the character perform the action while simultaneously doing a similar movement with the thumbsticks yourself. So, if you move the stick slowly, the character will move with you at the same speed, connecting your motions to theirs.

    It's an odd (yet interesting) thing when they first allow you to control both sides of the argument with Kara and Connor. It's essentially breaking the fourth wall on the script, because this means two things can happen (I've seen both in Let's Plays):
    1. You can pull a meta move and intentionally sabotage Connor's mission when playing as him. Either he doesn't discover Kara and Alice hiding or he doesn't pursue them. CoryXKenshin, Yub, and Marielitai Gaming did this. This is the "preference and bias" route.
    2. You can remain in character and do as both characters would do in the scene. So Connor pursues Kara and Kara defends Alice as well as herself.
    It's very odd as far as a tactic, and I can't say it didn't feel weird or half-baked at times but I can't say it wasn't unique either.

    • @Messier_-82
      @Messier_-82 4 роки тому +16

      Exactly! While playing a game I was constantly thinking not about what choices I like but what will have more sense to the script. I shouldn't be thinking about such things. It's just very poor storytelling. Because of that the game for me is really cool but very flawed experiment which ultimately failed.

    • @MicaylaRuby
      @MicaylaRuby 4 роки тому +12

      My first playthrough I sabotaged conner. When he's supposed to chase Kara and Alice I just made him stand there. I was surprised to see after the scene only around 2% did that. But this was close to the game's launch so it may be more than that now

    • @rhondahoward8025
      @rhondahoward8025 4 роки тому +16

      @@MicaylaRuby That's where the weird meta comes in. It's the same way Javier's and Clementine's relationship comes off in New Frontier. He usually puts far more good will in her than would seem believable by his character simply because _we_ have history with Clementine and _we_ want to do right by her. But the Garcia family doesn't know her from a hole in the ground.

      I don't consider Detroit a "game" per say, but it's not a movie either. It's more like a roller coaster with choices. What you have is an incredible experience that the player gets to be a part of. Being on a roller coaster and directing what paths it goes on, isn't gameplay, but it's arguably just as fun to be honest. Detroit doesn't need gameplay.

    As much as I loved this game, the characters, and their adventures, I personally found David Cage's writing too repetitive for my liking. The same use of words would crop up too often and I found that creatively lacking, e.g. 'who you really are', 'we are alive', etc. Cage, we get it! It felt like Cage didn't have confidence in his gamers' intelligence. Another thing he did that annoyed me was during one of Kara's scenes that drew good visual references to Frankenstein, but then he had a character say "He turned us into monsters, but who's the TRUE monster?" Why did he tell us AFTER he showed us?! Rule One of storytelling: Show don't tell. The visuals were enough. Someone should have said something, but, there it is. It's his weakness as a writer, clearly.

    • @SicklyOlive

    This game may disappoint some gamers, but as an English teacher, it's a WONDERFUL engagement with interactive story-telling. I'm starting a unit with the game this coming week with English 11 classes. The end goal for students is they develop additional branches of story within the universe, adding new settings, characters, and conflicts. This pairs very well with Bladerunner 2049, which we've already covered, so I thought they could mash up the stories, blend the universes. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with!

    A great critique. Honestly, this is one of those interactive experiences that left me thinking about it long after I finished my first playthrough (and second, and third...). I would love to see a sequel with the cop team of Connor and Hank. I found their dynamic with its various outcomes fascinating; on my first playthrough, Hank shot Connor and committed suicide. On my second playthrough, they ended in in the end credits in front of Hank’s favorite cheeseburger stand with a hug. Yes, it could be over the top at times, but this game tugged at my heart and brain in so many ways. Thanks again for the great analysis.

    I had a really weird time with this game. I absolutely loved Connor, I was apathetic to Kara, and I couldn't stand Marcus. I didn't like Marcus's story because it never made the best argument for why androids should rise up. It was all the most surface level slavery allegories they could fit in. Kara was okay, but making Alice an android too killed it for me. It could've showed that the children of today could change tomorrow's ways, but they took the easy road. Connor I just loved. But I feel like I loved him in SPITE of David Cage, not because of him. You'd be surprised how many times Bryan said, "I had to fight David Cage on that." A lot of the most memorable moments between Hank and Connor were improvised between the actors.
    Also I'm just going to say it: I hate the Holocaust comparison. When you have a heavy topic in a game you've got to do it well. And the camp was the most ham-fisted thing I've ever seen in a story. I almost felt insulted with just how dumb the game thought I was. You can do a WWII theme in fiction and still make it good.

      It's fascinating that Alice being an android ruined it for you. The question is if the machines were truly alive or not. If you buy into that concept that they are living beings then it shouldnt matter. If you didnt buy into it despite all you were shown then that means you would be one of the ones pulling the lever on the gas chamber historically. As they arent really people to you.

      @@robotpanda77 It's a sort of betrayal, since throughout the whole game we played as Kara trying to protect and care for Alice only to find out that everything we did were a waste. Things you did to sacrifice to get Alice something, only for her to call you a bad person? It just makes her seem ungrateful. Especially since it wasn't from her that we found out that she was an android, it was from another alice-android.

      @heyygallo Рік тому +2

      The camp felt realistic to me, though, at least for my play through. How else would the mass decommissioning of androids have gone over outside of mass executions? I think the comparison was inevitable considering that the holocaust is the most conspicuous example of mass genocide we have in modern history, so it would be hard to show an example of mass genocide in media without there being some overlap.
      It’s only my personal opinion, but I don’t think the comparison was offensive, nor did it water down the story. In my first play through, it was the most compelling part of the whole game. The way I felt sick to my stomach, wondering to myself how the soldiers could be so quick to vilify and dehumanize the androids. The whole time I just kept thinking “this can’t be the end, right? Someone’s going to save them. They’re going to get out.” And I was awake for hours afterwards just thinking about it all, and it followed me for days. Personally, it was incredibly compelling.

    Just finished my first playthrough of this game, and the routes that I took didn't really focus too much on the camps. I focused more on peaceful protesting and mixed it up at the march and fought back but kept sparing officers. The public opinion stayed indifferent, but then the climax of choosing to continue peaceful protesting swayed it to be more sympathetic. I only lost one character along the way and that was Simon.
    I loved the interaction with Connor and Hank and how Hank's back story wasn't revealed until the end when he helped fight the fake Connor on my playthrough. Kara's journey was very much a fugitive style journey that I adored and like Connor's story it was unique to see both sides of the coin to view the human side both negative and positive and similar with the Android side. I never ran into problems with Kara's story and played it safe. Never did ride in a boat or go through the recycling plant. With Connor I messed up with the deviant fight at the TV station and chose to sacrifice myself to save Hank. When Connor was replaced with a new model to continue the story was pretty cool.
    The story takes some great turns depending on your choices, but yes the repetitive writing can be a little too in your face "I am alive" "we are free" blah blah blah and the darker more mature themes are little cringy but it's not so cringy it's laughable, it just makes you scratch your head for a sec.
    My absolute favorite sections were the Zlatko sequence of going through his house of horrors and with me Connor meets up with Markus at Jericho and you have to control the dialogue of both characters which was absolutely brilliant having me choose between capturing Markus or falling into his words and becoming a deviant, or have Markus force Connor to kill him.
    The soundtrack was also breathtakingly beautiful and fully captured the emotion of the scene. I Definitely found myself tearing up and laughing along with characters. Also, the brilliance of the main menu Android reacting to your choices and the story was friggin awesome. I chose to let her go and now she's not at the menu anymore which is a super cool attention to detail.

Yes, the controls and gameplay have a lot of room for improvement, even for this style of game (but the QTE action sequences are actually really well done and carry a lot of tension due to the consequences of failure).
    But overall, I like the characters and their storylines, especially Connor as a character and Kara's storyline which feels like survival horror at times. I enjoy Markus as the grand hero, even though his storyline is the most cliche. All the actors did stellar jobs. Where the game succeeds for me is in eliciting emotions in the player, which is what this type of game aims for. I really care for Kara and her "family", for Connor's inner struggles and relationship with Hank and for Markus and his crew.

    The twist in Kara’s storyline ruins the experience of Detroit. There is absolutely no point for that twist. It’d be even more interesting if a robot is caring for a human. Like questioning whether or not androids can take care of a human child.

    The great thing about the game is that nearly "every choice" matters or will have an effect to the outcome at the end.

    darker and edgier =/= quality writing though. its good to acknowledge that adult themes in gaming are neglected but thats not an excuse for broken character arcs (which admittedly is hard to deal with in a decision game where you want to account for the margins of character actions a player performs) and generally weak dialogue.

    For me problem in writing is how androids become defected.
    First, androids need some kind of strong situation that will "break them". However to "break" androids need see difference between good and bad. For example Kara. She have formatted memory, she don't know what is good or bad. For her first time in house, where dad abusing Alice should be normal. She didn't know how good parenting looks. Also if she had already some predefined actions, why she didn't just simply call the police when she notice that something is wrong? In other side there is Connor where he can get different informations and solutions. He is best written, because he can follow the mission or "become defect" trying to do things that for him would be better.
    Second, how Marcus changing normal androids into defects is utterly dumb that I don't even need comment it.

    • @winter20k67
      @winter20k67 6 років тому +1

      robert3579 Just responding to the "why doesn't she call the police?" point. I don't care/know if it's explainable in the story but it follows the same principle of a self driving car, choosing between the driver and a pedestrian. Of course it would choose the driver, because who would buy a car that would kill you? Same principle in, why would someone buy an android that would snitch on you?

    • @robert357900
      @robert357900 6 років тому +8

      People wouldn't buy android that wouldn't allow them to do illegal things yet it perfectly ok that some of them might turn hostile to them becasue... reasons? Even better, they somehow won't be able to track down after beeing defective? Yeah, this is bad writing.

    • @winter20k67
      @winter20k67 6 років тому +8

      robert3579 Do you think they advertised them saying "Warning: May turn deviant and murder you" no, obviously not. They even say in the story how deviancy is a very recent trend. I don't see how the tracking part is relevant, but it's a plot device, at least they justified and explained it unlike other narrative games.

  • @mediadetective6104
    @mediadetective6104 4 роки тому +10

    I’m mixed about the game honestly, I love some aspects while hating others. I love Connor and his storyline, but I really hate how some of the messages and commentary are hammered into your head. I think my biggest issue with the story is you *can’t* make Markus and his rebellion extreme or bad. What I mean by this is though Markus and his rebellion can do destructive things, mainly kill people and cause general chaos, the game will always treat the androids as the good guys. I actually experimented, making Connor more of a balanced person, someone who understands both sides and is sympathetic to both humans and androids, and I made Markus into an extremist who cared nothing for human life and only cared for the Android cause. I tried to role play it as if Connor was a bridge of sorts between humanity and androids, and Markus as an antagonistic figure. But here’s the thing, when Connor confronts Markus and it gives you the option to break free from your programming or follow what you’re told, it portrays following what you’re told as a bad thing, no matter how bad or extreme Markus is in the playthrough, and if Connor goes deviant he automatically joins Markus. Even later at the Connor sniper scene, Hank still comes in, saying how the Androids are good and killing Markus is the wrong thing (even though in this playthrough Markus killed one of the cops Hank knew) and tries to stop Connor. It doesn’t make sense to me, the game is too afraid to make the rebellion look like they’re in the wrong or that bad no matter how destructive you get, it’s either justified or not even mentioned. I think that’s a reason I’m not a huge fan, but I get where you come from and all the power to you for liking the game.

      this is the beginning of war
      and josh gets shot and tells markus :the blood we spill will be on our hands. so the game clearly states that violence is never the answer and that u made the "wrong" decision .
      especially because u cant get the everyone survives trophy unless u choose the peaceful ending
      hank might have sympathized with their cause in the revolution ending but hey the androids only ever killed the people who were trying to kill them ..the androids never killed innocent people or smth.

    Been playing this game for over a month now, and I absolutely enjoyed it. But I don't think I would have enjoyed it so much if I didn't play it with friends or loved ones present. The more people start to watch me playing, the more get into it, and start screaming at me, "Answer aggressively", "No answer nicely", that sort of thing. As a form of advice, I have a girlfriend which doesn't watch or play video games whatsoever. But she enjoyed sitting right next to me and watched me play right through to my end, then we decided to do it again but differently. This is a game meant to be enjoyed by a group of people in your immediate vicinity(which means some of you will have to get real friends), and no, Androids don't count. I have a weird love/hate relationship with this game…
    For the first two hours, I was in awe with it! I loved Markus’ and Kara’s storyline and I was eager to see where things were going… In the end, though, I didn’t care for either Markus or Kara but I was heavily invested in Connor’s story! It’s by far the best of the three and the only interesting one imo… Markus’ and Kara’s story are predictable and feel generic (like their ideas are overused). Markus became Robo Jesus with a more than forced love interest and Kara didn’t matter for the bigger story at all…
    However, I respect the game for what it is and I appreciate it for what it was trying to do. Also, it has some incredible imagery and great visual design!

    I really enjoyed this game, even though I had to suspend my disbelief a lot of the time, and with Markus the most - his plot just felt like he is forcing his ideas onto the others, who didn't even experienced abuse (dunno just didn't sit with me well..).
    But the biggest shortcoming of the game and the moment that pulls me straight out of immersion is the scene at Kamski's place - The shooting of the Chloe - in lot of the game, especially with Connor you can play both sides (its almost required if you want to please both Amanda and Hank) or at least you can seemingly make Connor lie, but here you are given two choices they are supposed to be the definitive answer to what lies within Connors mind?
    The whole Kamski test is super wrong and the whole Kamskis assumption that Connor didn't shoot because he 'felt' empathy is bull. I personally didn't shoot because his offer to give answers seemed too good to be true and the whole shtick was just a waste of time and the quickest way out was to follow Hank. ( And the theatrics of Connor outside were too out of character , I would much prefer to have a choice in how to answer why didn't I shoot.)
    But anyway good game and good critique

  • @Beandipforyou

    I Believe that the game failed to talk about consciousness and how the androids were becoming aware. Instead it's a random act of "emotion" that isn't explained well. After watching "West World S1&2 which spends a great deal of time on conciousness and I say it's time successfully spent. And I'm surprised you didn't touch on the subject.
    I also thought a big moment in the game that fails to come across as it is suppose to, is the realization that Alice is an android. I think it takes away from Kara's character and how an Android shows more empathy than a human. I also want to know how are the androids temperaments controlled? They would have that, and how does the Audience know that their choices are their own? Is it really them finding themselves or are they a step away from going feral? Connors story line does help in this, but honestly I just found the lack of emphasis on conciousness a bit disappointing.

I know it was an off-the cuff remark and I'm not assuming your intention was malicious but how vitriolic your tone was really off-putting. Not the right context to describe some one as having a "major disability." Also, she's a voice actress man, you're not punching up when you beat down on her - it's a bad performance but I don't think she went on some luxurious holiday with the pittance she got. Agree with you. The media should be portrait as it is, an extention of powers to be.
    So the news would mention the androids and the camps as being something banal and standard (with no evil moral conotation).
    The president is not so annoying. The issue is that she sounds like she's reading from a piece of paper and she has bad eye sight.

    I think I spent the last 5 hours watching your videos. During your LA noire dissection, I went to your channel to look for another classic favorites of mine, Alan Wake. You don't have anything on it! Have you played it before?

    I loved this game, but I lean toward games with an actual story worth the time to tell. Games like COD are mindless garbage in my opinion. Is Detroit perfect, no, but it was still pretty great.

    After the (personal) disappointment that was Beyond Two Souls, I just presumed Heavy Rain was his 1 and only game I happened to like. I didn't have any intentions to play this one, but after the first 10 minutes of the video, I'm thinking I'll eventually pick it up.
    The concept of free will is something that really suits this type of experience. The choices of the player and the focus on those choices both reflect what the androids are going through and add an extra layer to the concept.
    If the choices actually matter and the writing is actually half decent, I'll enjoy it and come back here to watch the rest of the video.

      Soooo, have you played it? And if yes, what did you think of it?

    Detroit is incredibly impressive. Most games that claim your choices matter really dont. Maybe one or two major choices. This game? Holy shit every little deicsion you make at any part of the game will affect a lot of the later game. And its all woven in so well. I did 8 runs of this game just to see it all and was blown away they actually made a game where so many choices matter. The only other game that does this, tho not to this extent is House of Ashes and The Quarry. Both of those not nearly as effective as this but they both do have quite a few choices that do matter. House of Ashes particuarly. But yea Detroit is insane in that regard

    I don't understand the "not a game" thing. Its about as complex as Super Mario. Minimal button presses, fairly linear, etc.

    I didn't notice that the plan was for the androids to be reset, I must have missed that detail, because while playing through the game, it was my understanding that the humans realized the androids were a mistake and they wanted to destroy them (literally, not figuratively), so that's why I didn't have a problem with the news casters saying that. Maybe I missed the part when it was said "reset and put back in use again". Great game anyway, it does something different, even if not perfect.

      Yeah I have no idea where he got that idea from. When the President was questioned about the camps she says
      “All we are doing is *destroying* defective machines”

    Excellent video, with an intelligent explanation to the game. The content you created here is a lone light in an absolute sea of garbage content concerning this (style) of gameplay. Well done, and if any of your other content is this good, you have earned a subscriber.
