Yes. I liked Detroit, but she is right. The game doesn't tackled the AI dilemma the way it should be. Nier Automata is one of the best that tackled existential crisis. It's so thought-provoking that literally dozens of videos are already made to analyze the underlying philosophies it implies. Easily one of my fave PS4 game of all time.
I found Conner and Kara’s storylines very engaging and full of emotion. I didn’t ever really feel connected to Marcus. But maybe Kara’s story resonates with me so much because I have a daughter myself and projected my own desire to protect my real daughter into Kara’s pretend daughter.
Personally, I feel Kara's story is the weakest. Don't get me wrong, I love Kara, but you remove her from the game, and nothing in the overall plot changes. Connor's and Markus' plotlines actually end up intertwining and merge part way through the game. But Kara's just off doing her own thing. Feels very disconnected from the rest of the game. Also the "Alice is an android" plot twist is stupid.
The points you've brought up are realy interesting. I'm quite curious about how'd the game turn out to be had it not been such a big story, but maybe a more personal one. Less saving the world, and more understanding it.
I don't understand the question. A woman trying to secure a child is not personal? A dude abandoned and left for dead finding his place at an unexpected community is not personal? All of the bigger questions were asked within the boundaries of things anybody could experience if taken to the rock bottom of society, often against their will.

Table 53 it is. I don’t think Lion King 1.5 was all that popular, and the only people who have played that game had the DVD and were so bored that they wandered through the extras section of the DVD and stumbled upon the game.
@@GoBlueHTB Haha, I can understand that. As a child I spent probably far too much time trying to work out if you could actually defeat the Basilisk in the game on the bonus disk of HP and the Chamber of Secrets...
5:20 You/your boyfriend might want to play NieR: Automata, the game have plenty of pleasant and unpleasant surprises I still think that Detroit is a great game, it is indeed failing in asking let alone answering some of the big questions regarding AI, robot, etc but I still enjoy the story a lot and I hope we got more game like this in the future.
Yes! At least Until Dawn had no illusions on what it was trying to be writing-wise, which is campy, B-movie horror, unlike the pretentious mess that is the Quantic Dream games, always taking themselves far too seriously with their stories, and coming up severely short.
Marcus’ story was about liberating slavery on androids. Connor’s story was about loyalty and becoming of free will and choosing what is right and wrong. And kara’s is about finding love and affection which is a very human emotion.
This is the most elementary analysis that I have ever seen. I hope you don’t think you’re explaining that to this channel…I hope you’re just jotting it down for your own sake and accidentally posted it publicly 👀
@@l3vyy95 an in-depth analysis doesn’t have to be long. It can be done in the same amount of words you used, it just dives much further beneath the surface.
The weird part for me was why would we assume an Android would want to be human? We're always like "This robot is really smart, but its final form should add all the negatives from a chemical survival system used by monkeys". We're just utterly incapable of not anthropomorphising things.
(spoilers for Spiderman ps4) It's like what doc ock said in Spiderman ps4 said it was something like "Why should the most human form be our limit" while he was making his robot arms.
Steel Bear 1) Every word you just said is wrong. 2) I wasn't referring to the mechanics, (though they add to the experience) I was talking about the tension of making impactful decisions. Because of all the endings, you can't treat this game like anything else in the genre.
@@OoXLR8oO 1) you kinda wooshed yourself due to inability to not take everything seriously. Did you really think I was talking about controlling blinking in the game? Get a grasp 2) continuing the previous topic : I was talking about stupid shit like pressing several buttons at the same time to open doors. Oh yes, the game stops until I hold 3 buttons to get Hank's drunk ass up, so impactful indeed. And yes, because of all the endings I can absolutely treat this game like anything else in the genre, because there are legions of games like this. DBH is not the first and not the best
Excellent (actual) review of a game that has obvious flaws, yet remains so compelling. I totally agree that the Connor and Hank portions are the standout parts, and a Bladerunner-esque interactive fiction centered around Connor apprehending androids while having an existential crisis would have been not only a more focused project (the three perspectives did a disservice to the game's pacing), but would leave more room for questions about humanity and identity without the historical plagiarism. Great phrase btw, "historical plagiarism", gotta steal that! :p jk
I still have the David Cage interview saved in the bookmark because It's so damn funny "Despite this, however, director David Cage told me that he's not trying to make a game with an overtly political message, nor is he heavily drawing on real world history or politics as influences" Remember guys, the androids singing slave songs, all the android in concentration camps, the androids at the end of the bus, the MLK references ARE NOT A POLITICAL MESSAGE AND HAVE NO INFLUENCES ON REAL WORLD HISTORY OR POLITICS
@DejaVoodooDoll not decisive opinions at all but the hamfisted use of them in the story is immersion breaking since you're no longer thinking of the games story but "oh hey that's that thing that happened".
@DejaVoodooDoll You're just being a condescending asshole for no reason at all, dude. Chill out. Besides, I get the point that the dude was trying to make. He didn't say that racism wasn't real or anything like that, he was just trying to say that what's racist for some may not be racist to all. Hell, it's probably not racist at all.
Oh yeah, as contrast. They should definitely play Nier Automata. Especially since they came out a full year earlier. And handles the subject matter far more well.
I love it when you get more analytical. The title and comedic tone of your channel entails that your here to provide entertainment over criticism. But when you get critical, it becomes clear that your more than just an absent minded backseat gamer. Your are paying attention. Your not clueless. And you recognize when a price of art needs improvement. Dont hold back on being critical. That would be like holding back your intelligence.
Right? Like, holy hell. I loved and hated the game for the same reasons, but couldn't put together the exact reasons why. My home girl did that in less than 8 minutes.
I kind of disliked this particular video because it deviates significantly from the channel's premise. She hardly even mentioned her BF in this and that's kind of the point. I know that these are just barely hidden actual reviews of games but still, that backseat gamer element is essential. _Her boyfriend is a professional editor and he does pretty much everything even maybe the script._ Maybe not the whole scripts but yeah, she makes plenty of references to things and events that a casual gamer like her would likely never even have heard of. That's probably her BF's contribution.
It's funny some people found that ending so powerful, I am one of them. I understand your button pressing issues but I really didn't find that as a negative. I'm glad to see something different in the industry, and finally a game where your decisions actually alter the plot. Really enjoyed this game, and loved discovering the different endings. I feel like maybe because you shared the experience with someone else you may have been too keen on making jokes instead of enjoying the experience. Other than this, I've really enjoyed your content, and I can't wait for Wife Reviews! 😂
I felt like that ending the "war" was extremely underwhelming and weird. They straight up heard their messages and STILL decided to try and take all the androids out, and then right when they were about to kill the last ones... The androids singing... (or kissing??) makes them all be like. WAIT!! This is definitely one of my favorite games every but i 100% agree with this review.. Which is really weird lmfao
for my two endings, the heart breaking parts for me were related to Cara and the little girl and not being able to save them both.. totally broke me for a day.. also got the awesome connor and hank bro ending after the credits too. love that final scene. :)
RLM is one of those things that will always make me laugh, no matter the circumstance. And your videos are getting closer and closer to being in the same realm of transcendence.
I love how your progression went from a girlfriend's perspective on watching people playing video games. To now one of my favorite voices in all of video game reviews. I can see the effort you put into these videos. You're awesome keep doing you.
No need to point out that you were harsh. It was all fair criticism and I didn't take away from the usual hilarity and witty comments. Great job as always, keep it up! :)
I agree w Shelby it’s very tone deaf to use ai as an allegory for racism. Society often treats minorities as sub human. While there might be a philosophical debate about whether an ai can be considered human, from a literal standpoint an ai is not a human. Mistreatment of a machine which was literally created by people in a factory cannot be compared to mistreatment of living breathing people
You two should definitely play Nier Automata. After this, it handles the subject matter far better. And it came outa year earlier. The contrast between this game and Nier Automata would be hilarious to watch.
I'm very confused. How did it handle it better? It was solid, but the only way I can see that is if you're like a massive weeb. They are massively different games lol.
@@games4lifefreakThe different between Nier: Automata and Detroit way to handle this supjected is unlike Detroit Nieir:Automata actually dive in the ambiguity of sentiment, nautre of consciousness, technological singularity in place of scientific and ideological rationales of why machine deserve equals rights of human, what android meant to human and how Biology and Physically Android is different then human. @@aternialaffsalot Different games gerne don't matter when you compare the stories and yeah Nier: is an Character Action games yet handle the supjected far better than a story heavy base games and that telling something.
It's so interesting how we had so different experiences. This is the first time I disagree with one of your reviews a lot: 1. For me the gameplay was brilliant and kept me on the verge of the seat trying to avoid bad consequences. I knew the stakes were high, the story would run anyways whichever choice or dexterity in pressing the right keys i would show. I played in the highest difficulty, and this was one of the most if not the most intense gaming experience i've ever had. The emotional side of the game only added up to that immersion, i felt decisions mattered a lot. 2. I think the story was not about the discussion of techological breaktroughs that would make one argue if an AI is a conscious person or not, i feel the game sets it up to make it clear we are already past that point. It's already clear that we are already on a new road about becoming human: about free will, about finding oneself against oppresion, against a structured system.
Games where your character choices inform the development of plot and outcome of the game and lead to watercooler conversations already exist: they are called (tabletop) RPGs.
A good game would ask you "Are these androids human?" This games is just like " But they're human! They're definitely human! Did you get that they're human yet?"
How can a good game ask you "are they humans" while letting you role play as them. The only way that comes to me is role playing as humans which in this kind of story would give a whole other experience and a fairly cliche one.
@@DanDSoul frame the player's choices in the story as the programming, and then as the game progresses, if the story wants to make them seem more human take more control from the player. You could even have a climax where a player android is placed in a situation where they have to make one of two hard choices, save one of two people or something similar and if the player chooses the one that the android has less rapport with the android can deny the player - the analogy for their programming - and show self-aware actions and thought. Or explore sentience in how the androids respond to situations based on their pre-built programming versus things they've learned. Those are just two possible ways off the top of my head.
Detroid become human still is a huge step from previous games by David Cage. It doesn't have poorly tacked on sex and shower scenes, the child character actually acts like a child and it kind has something to say. I mean the "racism is bad" message is just a preachy mess, but the game (until the ending which ruined it) asked the question about if violence for the sake of change can be justified - and if someone of the oppressed group working for the establishment can actually change how things are. Personally, I would have preferred if the "peaceful" ending would have achieved just an end to the genocide, but not actual equality or if Marcus and his whole group would have died as martyrs. As it is, it just flat out answers the questions it poses with a fairytale ending. Another problem I have with the game is that Lucys and Alice's story doesn't really add much to the overall story. There is the part where the effects of the politics influence ordinary people, but that pretty much is it. Meanwhile, we don't learn who is behind Connors handler (I forgot her name) and why Connor could just deactivate the override of his personality. This doesn't mean that the story is bad, but it's more of a spin-off
@@Akshay-ji9nt Eh. PewDiePie is a great guy, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't say he's the best. Highest Popularity =/= Highest Quality. Just take a look at Fortnite.
there are even sex robots in the game, but the game is subject to ESRB ratings and to avoid "AO" the designers still have to cover the curves of those models. nobody would mind clothes in the situations, except ESRB :p the "Kara" trailer clearly states every android is useful for sexual intercourse, but the game itself is puritan about.
@@sephroth201 Maid bots are OP. They can hack everything, fight like a special forces veteran, calculate every single bullet's direction and speed. I mean who made whose fuckers?
I loved this game! Great review, though I found that the quicktime events were a good way of keeping it cinematic while raising the stakes and keeping you engaged. After you said it however, I agree that a game purely focused on the dialogue elements, fleshing out the decision making process and creating more implications for your choices would do this type of game better justice. Those were my favourite parts, winning over jericho's people, getting alice to trust me, and befriending hank are the most meaningful memories I have from this game. Albeit that my heart was pounding as I frantically mashed buttons to try and stop future cops from killing my 3 android besties, I think those sort of quicktime events are better suited in the way that Spiderman employed them. This review is awesome!!!
I felt the same way when I watched the game, it's like they really forgot the part of AI and barely scratched the surface in such a complex and rich topic, I would like if they had explored more on that part. A really good review
Except, it's kind of more about themes existentialism and what it means to be human, than a thought experiment on what sentiment androids would be like. XD
@Gladissims agreed. The game is not about androids but about humans, the androids are just allegories, and the real question is not: "what's the difference between a machine and a human?", but the more interesting: "what's the difference between an automaton and a living being?". Spoiler alert: the answer isn't between having flesh in the gut instead of iron.
@Gladissims Basically I see that I hadn't red everything correctly. I agree with you on everything, except on "what it means to be human" :). To see how much parallels can be drawn between androids/machines in the game and real humans, I think that Taro was telling that human adopting the behaviors/beliefs of his characters could be called "automata" as well, and that the only difference that matters isn't between human and machines but more between automata and living beings: being human isn't equal to being alive. The fact that there is no human in the game to serve as a living model for the robots seems to support this idea to me.
@@blasuqar Huh, I mean if that's what you took away from it that's great. XD Personally I interpreted the whole thing a bit differently though. Especially with all the references to famous philosophers who were concerned with existentialism especially. o 3 o I mean... One of the pods is literarily named (0)42 xD
I know this will be very controversial, but the thing about slavery is that it wasn't bad. The reason why all human civilisations in the past had slaves was because the ones who didn't have slaves got destroyed by the ones who had them. I.e. slavery was so good that it meant being exterminated without them. It was only with the invention of industrialization that slavery started to become a bad thing, since things more profitable to invest in, such as machines, started to appear.
@@twodotso ...why? The guy is saying that slavery was very important for the prosperity of a land in history, like cannibalism can be very important in surviving Arctic ice. Nobody is saying that it's good now.
@@kasp7674 Do you seriously believe the critic leveraged against slavery is its lack of efficiency? No one argues forcing fellow human beings to work for you under threat of torture or death is not a somewhat efficient way of gettings things made and done. The problem is that it is absolutely morally abhorrent and a denial of the humanity we all share to siphon the sweat, blood and dignity of other humans who are every bit as sentient and sensitive as you to produce work for you while they get *nothing* out of it. That is what is bad with slavery. And it absolutely, totally and irremediably is and always was.
I think this is one of the first reviews we disagree. I dont think the QTEs were entirely useless, it affected me and my friend’s play through significantly. If you were not as confident with QTEs the action route was not always the best if you didnt wanna risk being killed or failing. And although I agree that the game is not as cerebral as it can be when it comes to AI, being a minority who went through some the experiences depicted in the game to varying degrees, it really helped me connect with the story on a different level.
You guys are one of the best video game review channels on yt bc of your in depth, honest, hands-on, and entertaining analysis of games. Also that AVGN reference tho!

"the world's most advance choose your own adventure" just shows that more people *NEED* to play the zero escape games. you did not see any choose your own adventure before playing those masterpieces
I love Zero Scape, and it's one of a kind in terms of exploring the "gaming" side of branching narratives in a awesome meta way. But if you MUST explore all branches to find the end in every game, is it really a "choose your own adventure"? You're not choosing at all
@@teobaldominattoscussel7865 you sure as hell do choose your own adventure. the name is in the trailer "choices you make in the future influence the past". it's all about the choices you make and the information you get by these choices. which all ultimatly lead to the "true ending". the part of the adventure that really happend at the end. but before all of that you choose your own adventure.
You know, Mass Effect did a good job of letting you choose between android's sentience or not. The relationship between Joker and Edi, or between the Geth and Quarians. It would seem this game might've been better taking a queue from that venerable series.
2:52 Wait "something ordinary as the ground is a worf of art and become human" Detroid become human isn't about the Androids. It's about the city itself. Walls, Streets, Cars, Lampost. You blew my mind
Yeah, probably go play Telltale's The Walking Dead (season 1 only, probably?) and see what you think of it. They have a bunch of other good games too, but that was probably the most impactful.
Watched your Souls review, stopped halfway through and waited to watch it when my girl came home, everything was on point and so relatable...in fact it was so relatable I've started looking for more games that she can enjoy watching me play as I'm a hardcore soulsborne kind of player. She knows death sounds so well i hear giggles from other rooms now. We started with Horizon and she became hooked on the story and the speech trees, moved on to FF15 where when she missed an important bit I'd give her a recap. Gaming has been a part of my life since the early 80's and I've never once, until i saw the direct similarities in that video of yours, ever gave though to the person that wasn't behind the controls experience. And now after that eye opener we look at what game is next together and she far more likely to take the controls herself now. I know it's been long winded, but, essentially i just want to say thank you for shedding light on a part of our relationship (and for others as well i imagine) that while wasn't a problem area, turned the "our time" into more "us" time. Thanks for the videos guys, keep em coming and from us to you, we wish you well with the channel and your "us" moments as well.
I think you just sum up my frustration about the game: "it's not about android, it's about race." Instead of letting the player decide whether if they're human or not, this game just screams right at your face: "they're definitely human, don't question, just accept it" And at the game goes on, it's become pretty annoying. The graphics are legendary, but unfortunately the plot can't live up to it. Conor and Hank are the best part about the game, while Makus are the worst, Kara was just meh (especially with the confusing "twist" they pull out at the end) I'm interested to see your thought on NeiR: Automata though. Similar concept, but executed way more better
I think this is a very great comments on Detroit, that's why even I really like this story, I always feel something weird about that. Now I get it, it's not a robot SYFY story at all, that's why it's weird. I think this is your best review so far because it's really deep and on point.

:p jk

_Her boyfriend is a professional editor and he does pretty much everything even maybe the script._
Maybe not the whole scripts but yeah, she makes plenty of references to things and events that a casual gamer like her would likely never even have heard of. That's probably her BF's contribution.

I agree w Shelby it’s very tone deaf to use ai as an allegory for racism. Society often treats minorities as sub human. While there might be a philosophical debate about whether an ai can be considered human, from a literal standpoint an ai is not a human. It's so interesting how we had so different experiences. This is the first time I disagree with one of your reviews a lot:
A good game would ask you "Are these androids human?"
This games is just like " But they're human! They're definitely human! Did you get that they're human yet?"
While they are not humans

I think you’re given more choices if you deliberately fail some quick time events, the actual binary decisions are pretty sparse
Gonna say what many people probibly will. Nier Automata is a good "what if androids thought like humans" story. And the game isn't bad either
@@blasuqar Huh... I agreed with you up until the last point. XD To me the game has always been about what it means to be human, and alive. o 3 o
Excellent review, felt more like a "slavery is bad" type thing than an exploration into artificial intelligence, disappointing really..
@@kasp7674 holy shit even for youtube standards this is an insane comment. I feel horrible for the people around you.

@@kasp7674 I'd say it is always bad ... for the oppressed side. But I understand what you wanted to address.

I think you just sum up my frustration about the game: "it's not about android, it's about race."
Instead of letting the player decide whether if they're human or not, this game just screams right at your face: "they're definitely human, don't question, just accept it" And at the game goes on, it's become pretty annoying.
The graphics are legendary, but unfortunately the plot can't live up to it. Conor and Hank are the best part about the game, while Makus are the worst, Kara was just meh (especially with the confusing "twist" they pull out at the end)
I'm interested to see your thought on NeiR: Automata though. Similar concept, but executed way more better

I think this is your best review so far because it's really deep and on point.
The best game from this specific studio.... just some really good story and the fact that you can replay the game and get to see other choices was pretty fun, not to mention the insane amount of talent in voice acting and the motion cap. Just a very unique game in a sea of clones and sequel mindless bullshit (just my own 2 cents). Was however very fun to see an hear yours :) whom got to see it from a backseat perspective.
The fact you put RLM clips in this, which makes me believe you watch and enjoy RLM, warms my heart.
2:16 one of the best editing I have seen on your channel, and you have a bunch of good ones.
