2020 Audi R8 LMS GT2 in action on track: Accelerations, Downshifts & V10 Sound!

- The Audi R8 LMS GT2 was unveiled during the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed in order to be raced in SRO’s all-new GT2 class (GT2 European Series of the GT Sport Club championship), which aims to reduce aero and increases power over the GT3 class, making cars more accessible for drivers with less experience. The championship saw its start this year with 3 official GT2-class cars: of course Audi with this R8, KTM with the X-Bow GT2 and Porsche with the 991 GT2 RS Clubsport. During some rounds there were also a couple of Lambogrhini Huracan Super Trofeo and a Ferrari 488 Challenge, fitted with restrictors in order to equalize them to the class lap times. Brabham also recently announced their interests in the class and they will develop the BT63 on purpose.
The Audi R8 LMS GT2 is powered by the 5.2-liter V10 engine you can find in the road legal car but a couple of horses have been added (630hp) and it weighs around 1,350 kgs. A curious particular is that the car's chassis geometry has more in common with that of the R8 Spyder rather than the Coupé.
I recorded this car during a Curbstone GT test day at Monza Circuit last March but I'm only now sharing with you the very few material I have since I was hoping to record it better during other an more recent test days. But it didn't go that way... I hope it will be for next year!

Some fun facts about the R8 GT2 LMS
The base price for the car is 338,000 euros. But for 11,000 more euros, you have the a range of 6 colour options (they're made out of pure CFRP)
It has R8 GT3 Front brakes, and Rear R8 GT4 brakes.
the GT2 uses thinner steel compared to the GT4, but is stronger because of higher grade steel.
The power to weight ratio is 2.1hp/kg.
the ratio is wrong, 2hp per kilo lol its the other way around, 2kg per hp
Audi R8 has and always will be one of my favorites, but that air scoop is an afterthought at best. Lol.

The sound is eh. I hate modern cars cauze they make modern cars sound quiet but loud. Now if this was an old 2003 Audi R8 LMS the sound on an old audi is Louder and outrageous than the new ones. Its common sense cauze the stupid catalytic converter is what prevents your csr to sound loud not to mention it also takes away the cars TRUE potential in power and speed. Gosh i hate cats they are disgusting and makes your car weak. If i had an Audi R8 straight pipe all the way with no stupid converters cauze who cares about pollution its not a threat to human health
Only thing thats a threat to human health is electric cars with their cheap manufacturing and cheap wiring and cheap computer controlled electronic crap

It looks strange and nice at the same time
It looks functional which in my book is synonymous to good looking when it comes to race cars
I think why some people say it looks strange but can’t tell why is because of its spoiler, that’s a reverse swan neck spoiler, that’s why it’s cool and unique compared to other race cars.
Only thing I don't like is the rear spoiler, looks like someone put it together the wrong way.

@@Tony-112 actually it's a clever way of putting a reverse swan-neck. This way the air flow on the leading edge of the wing is not impeded, therefore optimizing downforce as well as reducing drag. In lift generation, it is better to have unobstructed leading edge and clean suction surface (that is the convex surface of the wing).

I'm not sure how more power with less aero is more suited for drivers with *less* experience...I guess the baseline would be the difference in cornering speed.
I would love to see GT1 return. Hypercar-class racing.
Hypercar class is already a thing and they replaced LMP1.
What you are thinking of is a bloated class of heavily modified sports cars, lightly modified supercars, and homologation specials which GT1 was. The return of such a class is impossible as things are far more closely regulated and less frantic than the mid 90-early 2000's. The disaster of the DTM Class one revival is a very recent but telling example of what would happen if they tried to bring back GT1 in any recognizable form.

I am a road course lover. When they all go just left or all right is not as fun in my eyes . I live by WATKINS GLEN track ,maybe I’m spoiled by being close to a road course but it’s my favorite track. They run all sorts of cars and classes . Would love to see that car ripppp on the track

Any idea how lap times compare with the gt3 car?
During the test day it did a low 1'49'', while during the actual racing weekend in April the best laptime set by a R8 GT2 was a 1'49'529 in FP1 but then for all the other sessions they were mainly in the 1'50'' range. The GT3 depends in which championship it races (due to different BoP parameters): in Blancpain/GT World Challenge Europe the Evo 2019 is generally on the low 1'47'' in qualifying, while during the DTM round last June a couple of R8 GT3s went under the 1'47'' (with a 1'46''604 and 1'46''838)

How is top speed compare to Gt3?
The road version has the highest top speed of 340kmh, the race cars don't need that high speed because there's not enough road, so the have bigger gears for more torque, so they can pull out of turns quicker. The top speed of the gt3 and gt2 and gt4 is around 290.

Perhaps it just me but I still think Audi should fit its RS twin turbo V8 to the R8 instead of using Lambo's V10
Yes V10 is a lot more "exotic" than V8 but the engine noise just doesn't suit Audi overall image imo. It's a little bit too wild for typical German sophistication image? A little bit too Italian?
They have a v8 version as well.
I think the V8 does not fit Audi at all, as they are a luxury Brand and not interested in making muscle car noises...

Audi is famous for thier inline-5, so the V10 suits the R8, but the R8 should be renamed R10(has a V10, not a V8 currently). Whats more German than the metric system, as the metric system is base 10(Audi R10).
It's an audi v10 and not a Lamborghini v10...upon that Audi has had a great history of inline 5's so the v10's somewhat seem to suit them
