Like this video. Love the information you shared. I let the male Phidippus Johnsoni jumping spider outside. When I did, it seemed like he wanted back in. The amazing thing about that, was when I looked at him, I also spotted another jumping spider. Not sure what that breed was. It was way smaller in size. I have learned over the years that jumping spiders are in my opinion the most intelligent of the spiders. I know the one I had in the forye' by the front door was. The female, she was a bit more shy. I fully appreciate all information I have learned from your channel, and I admire they type of spiders and reptiles, along with the snakes you keep. Love them all myself. We need them for the life cycle in nature. Thank you, and hope you and everyone has a Safe, Blessed and Wonderful day. ❤😊🕸🕷🕸💯.
People, please get these! I have three of them now, and they are VERY well-made, cuddly, and just gorgeous. You will NOT be disappointed! Also, fly amanita hat... WHAT? How cute can you get?!?
I have made a little video of the jumping spider that we thought would be outside. My husband had put it out, but it seems not to want to be outside. I just saw it, so I decided to make a little video with the pictures I have taken of it. The last few were of the other one. Just wanted to show Renée off to anyone who wants to see. Roaming free, it will be. Have a Wonderful day everyone 🤗❤️🕸🕷😍🕷🕸❤️🤗The other one I named Viola after my grandmother...
Why do people always feel they have the right to judge people who aren’t doing harm to others?!? Just finished binge watching all of your videos! Loved watching your pet family grow! Only question I have is, how does your landlord feel about all of your pet kids? 😂
thank you so much! well, they are fine with our animals and do not spray for bugs here due to them being here and that is exactly why we haven't moved yet despite outgrowing this space .. we will buy a house next.
Right? It's maddening. I'm sure the same people don't like her tattoos either. Won't someone think of the children!!! .... And maybe get them good educations about spiders from people like Kat. :p
I have thought about having a spider for a pet, but I enjoy having my daughter-in-law visit. 😂 She has said that if I get a spider she won't set foot in my house. Of course getting a black widow might be a bit much for me. 😊
My first pet spider was a beautiful juvenile female western black widow I found in the bathroom at work. 😂 A year later, I still have her, as well as 2 tarantulas and a wolf spider. Black widows make amazing pets. They're so fascinating to observe, and they provide quite the show at feeding time. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a hardy, low-maintenance spider. They're totally non-aggressive and are not at all inclined to bite, so even though their venom does pack a punch, it's really not something to be overly concerned about. I feel like you'd have to actually TRY to get bitten in order to take a bite.
That's how I got into spider keeping too! I found a black widow when I was working in a vineyard, kept her briefly in a tupperware and fed her flies ( released her back into the wild when I was moving on to a different location). She was so fascinating to watch and beautiful. Now 15 years later I've got my third widow, tarantulas, and a six eyed sand spider on the way!
@@tarantulakatWidows are Cobweavers, these gals REALLY have to be provoked to bite. 90% of the time, she doesn’t want to. She has Large Volumes of Nerve Venom. It’s those volumes needed to kill dangerous prey like Mud Wasps and Mantid Flies who prey on other Non Web Spiders.
Everyone in the South grows up looking for recluse spiders and being told to wear gloves when you do stuff in the attic or garage. And that's it. Just don't be stupid, seek medical attention if you get bitten, and that's it. Stay calm. I was actually bitten by a recluse when I was a toddler (obviously I don't remember it), and I have a tiny divot scar on my thumb from it. I was a toddler, and I survived. I have a bigger scar from burning myself on the oven. :p I'm not saying I want one as a pet, because I probably HAVE some in the walls of my apartment already, ha. LOVE them and leave them alone if you don't want to take care of them like Kat does. Just... let people be, man. Kat has feelings and a life. I'm sure you do something that SHE would think was dumb and selfish.
@@nettyjads5620hi I'm from the UK too and just wanted to say we are also getting venomous spiders. Not deadly ones but they can hurt. Near where I live we have some types of funnel web spiders and lots of places now have false widows. I know a few people that have been bitten and they had painful swelling and they ached where they were bitten, but that's it.
@@CyanideSunshines Yeah the Steatoda Noblis False Widow has become very common the last few years with the Warmer Climate. They are a Pest as they are a Invasive Species that has seen a Drastic Decline in the other TWO Native Steatoda Species in the UK. We do get the Scare Mongering about their Venom being Necrotic like the Brown Recluse and Hobo Spiders in the USA. However as with those Spiders the Necrotic Wounds are very rare but can and do Happen.... likely either from a secondary infection or prehapse the Spiders are carrying Bacteria etc. As the Venom alone doesn't have any Necrotic Elements
When I was in first grade I had to be hospitalized from a spider bite that turned out to be a brown recluse. Turns out I had rolled over onto one in my sleep and it bit my back. Can't blame the little thing for self defense, and I can attest that there wasn't any rotting or anything. Just vomiting and weakness that I remember. Anyway, I still love bugs and spiders and all sorts of critters today, and I thank you for sharing your collection with us, I love them all!
I was bitten by one as a child too. Unfortunately, because of the location of the bite and the fact I was in a waist down bodycast, everyone thought it was a cast sore. And all the symptoms were things common for me to experience after surgery. So mine didn't get treated until it was rotting and I got nerve damage. It was nasty and painful. But I think the worst part was after I found out what it was, I had dreams that spiders were living in my cast...waiting to devour me. Lmfao. But for the most part, people just don't get bitten or if they do, it doesn't get nearly that bad. Especially if you get treatment earlier on. I was just unfortunate.
I take my zoology class to the insect lab at the local university. Grad student there keeps widows as pets on his desk. He regularly handles his widows and I thought he was crazy. Once I watched him handle a feather leg baboon tarantula and I KNEW he was crazy. He's never been biten though.
People seem to always hate on what they don't understand. I became a widow owner for the first time back in February and my western black widow girl, Belladonna, is one of my favorite spiders in my collection. She is super chill. Even to the point I've had to coax her to get her food that was dropped in her web. I wouldn't mind owning a brown recluse, but doubt my bf would be okay with that. He wasn't fond of me getting a black widow, but he's became a little more okay with it once he realized she couldn't escape her enclosure. lol
You always handle these types of comments so well. Much more grace and patience than I would. People truly need to educate themselves before making stupid comments. You do a great job educating us. You are amazing!
I'd imagine that's partly because you're more likely to find a careless dog owner than spider owner. Not that I have any concrete evidence of that, but the owners of more unusual pets I've run across seem to just know more about their pet(s)
Primarily because of you, Dave (Dave's Little Beasties), and Tom Moran my dislike of spiders has completely turned around. I've never been phobic, but I would definitely not be very calm if one got on me (not screaming, but there would definitely be at least a little bit of a flail and slap). I am now super interested in them, and I've got five tarantula slings in various stages of growth that I enjoy feeding and watching. They are incredible creatures, and I feel like my life is richer now that I understand them to a (small) degree.
I don't understand why people don't just mind their own business! I love your channel & content.I Know that things can get out but they will do what most spiders do & hide! Brown recluse, what it does is in the name! I have always love spiders & all bugs, that why I don't keep any, I couldn't feed them! I have a few house spiders that I'm pretty sure have been with me a while, one has a very distinctive mark on it's back.
I really like how you adress concerned comments. Because yes, the might be over the top, but it's obvious that these kinds of comments come from people who don't know much, if anything, about spiders and are scared. Responding in this calm and educative manner is such a great way of dealing with worried people. And anyone else also gets to learn something new about certain spiders, too. 💚
Literally every spider bite seems to be blamed on the brown recluse where I live, and they don't even live here. Glad that you brought up the dog attack statistics. A lot of people give flack about keeping invertebrates in your house for the safety of your kids but our dogs are more likely to kill us. 😅
No not at all. The propaganda about "dog attacks" is bullshit. Of course if your dumb child isn't disciplined and abuses the dog, that little demon will be bit. It's called natural instinct. I'd be more concerned and worried about that human child, because, you never know if that "CHILD" will become a rapist or serial killer.
Ugh. The brown Recluse scares me more thanthe black widow because of their habit of wandering around. I found a young black widow in a box of grapes when I was a produce worker at a Whole foods. How it survived the refrigerated truck and then our cooler I'll never know. But it did so I took it home and kept it as a pet all summer. Full grown she was beautifully glossy black with a fiery red hourglass.
I never get that lucky. I wouldn't mind a free spider with my fresh fruit lol. Someone in one of my snake groups actually got a free snake with their broccoli not long ago.
Super glad I watched this specific video of yours. We lived in SoCal for two years in the middle of the desert and Black Widows were a major pest for us. I remember one summer I found around 12-14 in about two weeks. Of course people were killing them left and right and I let them be. Mind you I have two kids who were 4 and under a year old at the time. They knew to not bother them and they actually laid three clutches in one summer and protected those things with their life. When they went away for the day under the stucco of our house, the clutch went with them. This just proves to my husband that I wasn’t crazy for leaving them be! Thanks again for another informational and educational video!
Kat, you am so happy you are educating people on spiders and helping people with their fears against spiders. I find spiders are helpful and make very good pets. 🕸🕷
Do those people think spiders are like tigers, getting loose and hunting down people? LMAO! Thank you for your content and educating of people. You're one of the reasons I've worked through my arachnophobia and am at the point where spiders are fine to live in my house wherever they like, other than the bedroom. The bedroom is off-limits. 😆 I'm in Alaska, and we don't have black widows or brown recluse, other than the odd one that might get shipped up in a container. We have a "spider expert" (Keith) who lives in Anchorage and will happily take any of those off people's hands, thereby ensuring the survival of the spider until its natural death. It's been many years since a brown recluse found its way here, but I believe he has at least one black widow right now. I love the coffin-shaped cribs! I have two rectangular cribs right now, in case a spider over-winters in the house like last year (a hacklemesh weaver I kept for 6 months before releasing after his spring molt, when the weather warmed up). If they're indoors after the cold really sets in, there's concern (at least on my part) that the spider isn't acclimatized to the outside chill enough to survive the winter outdoors. So I plan to keep any I find. Hopefully not more than two or I'll have to buy more enclosures! Either that, or I'll just let them go where they like in the house. I have a shy girl (?) near my burglar alarm who has lived there for a couple months now.
I'm Australian so it's pretty cool seeing some of the arachnids that are illegal here in Australia but we also have some beautiful arachnids that are native here Like my personal favourite the peacock jumping spider, love watching your vids!
Here in Mexico we mostly have brown widows. Or at least where I live. So when I finally got to have my first black widow I was head over heels. I named her Carrie and she was wonderful. Even laid some eggs and enjoyed a cricket every other day. Only had her for about a year since she was an adult already, but she helped me greatly to love these beautiful and misunderstood creatures. You have a great channel, I'm so glad I found you!
They're so cute! I grew up in NorCal on a property that was also used as an auto shop/junkyard and I was always surrounded by black widows and other kinds of spiders, including brown recluses. I've never been bitten by any spider. I spent hours every day around them but they never hurt me. They make me feel nostalgic.
Thank you for all you do! I Got my first jumper yesterday, and I am so in love with her. My boyfriend (who was on the fence about a jumper) fell in love immediately and now wants a widow. Spiders are beautiful creatures that deserve love and respect just like any other creature out there… except ticks. Screw ticks
Tarantula Kat, I've been watching your videos for months now. I'm not a keeper but I love, love, love our eight legged friends and your content! I have to admit, your brief clip of Godzilla made me holler with mirth! I couldn't agree with you more. If you dont like black widows, brown recluses, tarantulas then simply keep stepping, we won't miss y'all!
I know this isn't about the video, but I just got in my Remebering Chai t-shirt today, and I love it SO MUCH! Not only it is soft and comfy, it's actually sized correctly! I always order larger than my size because I can't trust most places to do that, so it is really appreciated that your size information for women is on point.
I never wanted one until I saw you get yours. I have been looking into it! I have always thought they were cool even when I was terrified of spiders! I love that you said how many people die of dogs. I’ve always said that…… great video 💕
I love this video so much. I work around black widows in my line of work. One thing to mention about them being gentle tho is they are definitely gentle and docile unless they have eggs in their habitat. The mammas are very protective and aggressive and have different instincts than the younger ones without child. Most black widows i come across in my work try to either hide or will sit still if I'm not disturbing them too much. But the mothers definitely show an instinct to protect their eggs. Such wonderful creatures.
This was the perfect time for me to watch, my first ever brown recluse died the other day and it’s been super sad for me, good to see yours are doing so well!!
My sister got bit by a brown recluse and she was one of the few that the venom did quite a number on. She didn’t check her rubber boots and was greeted by a bite. I’ve always been terrified of most spiders and her getting bit made that fear even worse. Thank you for this video. It did help me quite a bit!
Great video! So many people have the wrong idea about many species of spiders and snakes. Thank you for educating people on why spiders aren’t as bad as they think.
I have had several encounters with several types of spiders in the last three years of my life, it’s got me interested for sure I’m considering getting a jumping spider is a Pet. Anyways, there’s a few people on UA-cam that deserve their platform and you are definitely one of them. You’ve taught me so much I really appreciate it. Three years ago I trained an orb, weaver, spider by my door with an egg sack to drink out of a glass, medicine, dropper and fed her some crickets. The following year we got another one probably one of her babies. I’ve had several encounters with black widows and sons going full-time in an RV my husband and I we had a huge trantula walk right up to us. We’re in New Mexico currently. Thank you so much for everything you do.
I love this video so much. Because of your previous black widow videos, I’m actually picking my black widow up from the hub tomorrow morning!! Thanks for all you do 🥰
I’ve been bitten twice by black widows. The bites were both a little crazy, but I’m still fine! I was put on antibiotics for over a month each, and just had to keep the bites clean. I still have a bruised area from one that’s very light now, but it took a long time to heal. I was nauseous and had headaches for a few weeks, but that went away. Moral of the story? If they do bite you, more than likely you’ll be fine. One of them bit me while I was in bed. Spiders are everywhere. Lol people are silly. And yes, if you’re a child or sick or elderly, you may have a more severe reaction. More than likely, you’ll be ok! Also, I’m in Utah, from Vegas. We have these everywhere! They’re so misunderstood. I love your channel Kat! Thank you for bringing light to these adorable and amazing creatures ❤️
Hey I hope this isn't a dumb question but I've been researching all week and keep finding mixed information so I don't know what to believe and wanted to ask someone who is more experienced in the matter and even more passionate and vigilant than I am. So yeah without further rambling I've noticed that you add decor to your enclosures. I'm just about to get my 3rd black widow and after seeing your cute coffin enclosure I really wanted to make this enclosure more themey. I'm not typically one to add anything that isn't specified for pet use but what I'm wanting to do is grim reaper themed and I've had the hardest time finding a grim I like specified for pet use. Like I said I've been researching safe materials for the enclosure but keep finding mixed results. Specifically one grim I found was made of resin and some people are saying resin is safe once dry other people are saying don't do it. So any input or help at this point is greatly appreciated. I've got some time to get it all set up before her arrival so no rush or pressure ❤. Thanks so much for your videos oh and the promo code for my 1st coffin enclosure. Got it in black 🖤
Hi Kat, thank you for your amazing content. I watched your vids for abaout a month now and they helped me to understand the fascination some people (especially you 🙂) have for these creatures. I had a great disgust for spiders since I was a teenager, but your passion for the hobby helped me to overcome it. Thank you very much for the help I never knew I needed.
These spiders are part of the Eco system. I adore their existence and i say to the people out there We're all living though a pandemic, uncertainty sending out kids to school, hunger, crime I send my daughter outside! Like turn off the news, radio, lights, be free! My little girl will find spiders (OMG YOU LET HERRR HOLD THAT) isopods, earwigs, frogs and moths. Her ability to ask and learn will move mountains! Ive never seen either brown recluse or black widow in Maine. Jealous, but up north Huntsman. Keep on with books and information links. We love you Kat! Sincerely MJ and Ms Elayne
🎉We live in East TN and my daughter does as well. Her house was totally filled with brown recluse they lived in the cabinets and under furniture in a tough little web hammock. If you got up at night and went in the kitchen and turn the light on they would sit frozen on the counter top. She called a pest company and he examined the attic and there were bunches of them up there and in all the closets. He told my daughter that the only way to do any thing was to leave the house for a couple of weeks and they could tent the house and set off bombs of spider spray insecticide in the attic and the whole house. There were also lots of black widows in all the windows and under her back deck. She soon moved out of that house and got a brand new double wide up on the job where he worked, totally spider free! I was cleaning closets and boxes and got bit by a brown recluse in the soft part of my thumb and pointer finger.. I had a bad sore get started and had to go to the dr. He said the tissue was necrotic from bacteria that went in when I got bit. It took several weeks to heal up! Now I’m careful when I clean closets or boxes that have been sitting in dark areas. it’s so odd that the brown recluse don’t catch their prey in a web, they hunt them chase them down and eat them!
I just wanna say, Kat you really taught me a lot these past couple years. Since then I’ve been passing what I learn to my arachnophobe bf. He’s since given me the green light on pet spiders and now we have our first T! He’s even become interested enough to tell me he wouldn’t mind a black widow someday, he thinks they’re cool! He still doesn’t want to touch any spiders, but hey, that’s alright I’ll take it!
I was bitten by a brown recluse as a child, had a bad reaction, and in turn fell in love with them and all spiders! Ever since I've studied spiders and would catch and release them. My niece and nephew are in awe because I never think twice about gently catching them and moving them outside. Since that first time I've only been bit 2 other times and they weren't as bad. I love the recluse and all spiders
Long time follower, first time poster! I loved this video; I recently moved from Northern California, which is rife with black widows, to Seattle, and I'm super bummed at the lack of widows I see here. I also was told by my father as a child that the brown recluse "is the most dangerous and terrifying spider in the world." Like Uncle Jesse on Full House used to say, "Have mercy!" These are two of my absolute favorite spiders on Earth (next to Ogre-faced and Bolas spiders), and people just need to calm down and stop believing the hype. These are gorgeous and wonderful animals that enrich our environment, unbeknownst to us, every day. Thank you for everything you do, Kat! I especially love Maple, your wolf spider; she's utterly adorable! Make a plushie of her, please!
Hi Katt , love your videos.. maybe try getting some Brown Widows sometime.. they are pretty cool and make a very strong web and weird looking egg cases. Take care and have fun.
I try to catch and release spiders that enter my house, but never gave grace to brown recluses out of fear. Been getting over the fear of them because of your channel, and actually just released one this morning. He was definitely more scared of me than I was of him.
Some spiders didn't enter your home it's been there home since birth and the only environment it knows. I used to put house spiders outdoors, but found them dead the next day so now jusr let them roam around inside and never had any issues. There are some that accidentally wander in though that won't survive indoors also depending on the species
Hi. I just got 2 juvenile giant Asian forest scorpions through the mail. They were both in the same tiny pot. I thought they would be in separate pots. Because of watching your videos, I was able to (without harm to them or me), put them in their own enclosures with relative ease. It's the first time I've u boxed live animals. Thank you for showing me how it's done. I see why you love doing unboxing videos. It was increadably scary, but gave me such a rush at the same time. Lol
I have black windows all over my property. Found a baby cottonmouth snake a few days ago flipping a rock in my yard. I leave them be, these species are well respected and I keep them around without any issues.
I’m just not at the point yet where I feel comfortable owning a black widow, but yours is absolutely stunning. I think they are such a beautiful spider. I love watching your shows when you feature her!!! 🕷️
Love the relaxed and humorous way you have approached this topic, I can imagine it can be so tiresome to keep getting and responding to the naysayers! You have our support Kat!
hello im from New Zealand and we don't have much big or cool spiders so i love watching your video's they r very interesting and entertaining. Keep up the amazing videos :)
I just wish some people would realise without these lil critters n snakes we would be overrun with pests n vermin and that they are a much valued asset of the eco-system . Great vid as always Kat n luv the coffin cribs.
I wanna know the science behind how naming things just seems to make them less scary. I remember Tyler rugge has/had a centipede named Miss Kitty because the name sort of softened the initial fear of her, and now here I am watching Brownie scrabbling at the walls of a plastic cup and all I can think is, You Silly Little Spider, You Know You Can’t Climb That
Thank you Kat for continuing to attempt to educate in spite of/ because of all the negativity. Bring naive is not an excuse for comments like that, if they were bothering to even listen to any of your videos then they would find their eyes opened. 💜🕷🕸🕷💜
My Uncle was bitten by a black widow in the desert of Cali and ended up getting a tat of the widow right over the spot! And he was FINE. My cousin and I use to search for them. I believe they are lovely! The recluse not so much, but your teaching about these spiders is AMAZING! 🤘🏻🖤❤
As a black widow keeper, my favorite is the "but what if there's a flood or an earthquake and your spider jars get crushed or knocked over and the spiders escape?" line. Just ignoring the fact that if such a disaster were to occur that would shake my house that hard, the entire structure would probably have collapsed into a pile of rubble and a dead spider in a jar would be the absolute last thing on my mind (also because I'd probably be dead too 🤣)
If it wasn't for this channel I'd still be petrified of spiders. Now I'm saving them and taking them outside. I'm still not fond enough to have them as a pet but they are super interesting and eat all the other creepy crawlies...so thank you Mr. and Mrs. Spider.
Im considering keeping a recluse, theres lots in my house (confirmed recluse, they have the signature eye pattern)and ive grown quite fond of them, from seeing rhem so often and defending them so much. Been in rhis house 5 yrs and not a single family member, person or pet, has gotten a scary bite. Theyre cute little guys and i cant help but admire them!
I love this video kat !! Spread the knowledge and spread the love ❤️🙌🙌🕷 I know I've mentioned it before but you single handedly inspired me to get my first t last year, now I have a bakers dozen and couldn't be happier !
I've relocated Brown Recluses before (had a positive ID on them thanks to your many wonderfully helpful videos on them so I knew they weren't Wolf Spiders or Cellar Spiders) and the thing that scares me about them is their ability to teleport when they want to, not their venom even though I DO have a healthy amount of respect for that as well. Also, I love how adorably messy Black Widow webs are and how every one I've ever encountered that I've gently used a stick on to chase them into a safef hiding place to keep them from getting sprayed on sight just for existing have dropped down and played dead instead of being aggressive like the people around me swore up and down they were. I have a serious soft spot for the misunderstood creatures and a love for true facts over fear mongering and misinformation. 💙💙
I subscribe to exotics lair and you come up on my recommended. I am petrified of spiders, but still fascinated at a screen distance😅. You’re the first woman i’ve come across with such a big spider/tarantula collection. New subscriber and i love your content, also the adorable little habitats make things way less scary for me. Something that also got my heart, when i saw your habitat decor of mushrooms and spooky things, it’s hella cute😭 I find your videos so interesting, i’m glad i stumbled across you by accident 🙏🏻
I was visiting Illinois and was playing with my friend's dogs in the yard and I didn't have any shoes on. I felt a tiny pinch on the top of my foot and looked down and saw what I think was a brown recluse on my foot. I shook my foot and it fell into the grass, so i looked at it and I think it was a brown recluse (but it might not have been). I went inside and washed my foot with soap and water just in case to make sure it didn't get infected or something. The spot where I was bit was a little red for an hour, but it didn't hurt or itch or anything, and the redness was completely gone by that night and I couldn't tell exactly where I was bit anymore. I wish I would have caught the spider so I could see if it really was a brown recluse or not.
I'm nuts about my new world tarantulas, however for some reason the widow spiders freaks me out. Here in south africa they discovered a new species on table mountain it's called strawberry widow spider. found in 2022. Can't find a scientific name it's body is fully red with black legs. Shocked how people overreact, as you said they likely have at least one widow or recluse spider hanging around. Has a video can't remember the title but he jokes think about the children - something similar.
Fun fact: in Italy we refer to the brown recluse as the “violin spider” due to his characterystic darker spot on the cephalothorax, which resemble the shape of a violin.
Hi Kat, I really appreciate your channel, you helped me a lot with my arachnophobia. I adopted an Eresus and I love her. Would you be interested in talking about Tegeneria spiders ? They are very common where I live and I know they are completely harmless, but just seeing them still makes me uncomfortable and this is the time of the year where they show up inside the houses. I really want to learn to not mind their presence.
Black widows are fascinating to watch, even if they don't move around much. Btw, Spider Queen, how's yr centipede doing? (Giant centipedes haunt my nightmares.)
I grew up in the south so I'm used to seeing them. I moved up north to Michigan and noticed they are starting to get them and a lot of people freak out. Makes me laugh they used to freak me out but then again all spiders freak me out. It's a phobia not a fear lol
I saw a black widow while walking down the path off a roller coaster at Six Flags Atlanta. The spider was nestled within the bricks of a retainer wall.
I have your kat pack and have a Caribbeana versicolor in the pink one and a brown recluse in the black one there awesome spiders I love them thanks for the signature :) btw
I found a brown recluse in my room last night and its far too cold to release outside so i made a little home for it. Its still a young one. But because of your videos i don't fear them anymore ❤
Ive caught a couple of black widows and a few brown recluse in my home and kept them. before i had my 2 babies i loved keeping them and they were about the only arachnids i wanted to have lol. they are amazing creatures! I miss my 8 legged danger babies. i decided it was best for them to be rehomed and started keeping regal jumping spiders cause my 3 year old has a love of creepy crawlies like i do. Especially his jumping spider we found that he named spidey ❤ patiently waiting for me and my old man to agree they are both old enough for me to have the more venomous spiders i love again🥰
I came home from work and there was a Black widow on my door. It ran up my arm and I just kept calm, took a leaf and let her walk on it and laid her on the ground. Never got bit.
I have my black widow her name is Spicy. I get this question a lot too, and people say they will never come to my house because of her. I love how you pointed out the number of deaths caused by dogs and cows and i'm totally using that in the future!
Widows are scary, they like my garage. Also, my first experience with them was probably with the angriest most territorial black widow in existence ever. I was 7 and it was in our garage and it actually did go after my mom when she went in to get to her car, I watched from the doorway a clear as day black window sliding down from the ceiling onto the car. It must have absolutely hated my mom or was infected by some virus. I have not trusted them since. But, good to know they are not normally like that and my experience was isolated to that possibly one widow. It also explains why they just stare at me when I go into my garage and then hide when I start spraying, sorry but I have a dog and two kids, not going to risk a bite. But thank you for explaining their behavior it does help understand them more.
I'm from Florida, we have black widows and brown recluse living amongst us. I've seen many black widows from slings to adults. I don't know anyone who has ever been bit by one, and I am the only person I know who has been bit by a brown recluse. I was unlucky enough to sit in a chair that had an egg sac on the underside of the seat. The spider-lings had already emerged and I ended up with 11 bites total on my legs. I'm one of the very few that has a more significant reaction to their venom than normal (because of course, why would I not be allergic to something when I'm allergic to everything). It wasn't anywhere close to life threatening, even with 11 bites at once. I didn't really feel them at first, but after a while, the first few bites started to hurt/itch. Kind of like someone who is severely allergic to mosquitos ( ask me how I know). I was only 18 at the time and didn't know much about spiders so I scooped a few babies up into a pill bottle and headed to the hospital. The doctor had to send them to someone for analysis and he found out pretty quick they were brown recluse slings. He prescribed me antibiotics and ibuprofen lol. The worst ones were probably the first two which turned into ulcers that ruptured and looked kind of gross, but weren't any larger in circumference than a dime. It's been nearly 20 years and I still have scars from them, but they're not noticeable. The barbed wire scars in the same area are way more noticeable and they're much older.
I have or used to have arachnophobia until I started learning about tarantulas. Now I am in love with them (one reason I like watching your channel) and will be planning on getting maybe four of them in the future (including old worlds). But I draw the line at them. I get it that black widows are friendly but what if you make a mistake, they get scared, run up your arm and bite you?
I remember when my town got struck by a hurricane, tornado, tsunami, and a mudslide all by noon one day the first thing I thought Is I hope there’s no black widows near me
Most spiders I catch I create a habitat for them to live in. I stopped doing that with black widows because no matter how secure the container, she kept laying eggs. That led me to something pretty fun... Letting them free roam on the property. I mean once they've constructed a web they're not going anywhere for a while anyway and black widows especially can make such huge web environments that are a lot more interesting for me to interact with the spider then if I would have just caught it and brought it inside and put it in a habitat. Just a suggestion to enjoy them from a different perspective.
I have a huge house spider living here and the wind blew leaves in his/Her web. I cleaned the leaves out hoping that he/she will rebuild their web. It was so beautiful in the morning sun
I have a Black Widow in my garage right now!!! 2nd one-never bother me, I warn family-(on ceiling easy to spot) talk to her and she’ll pass away soon 🤷🏻♀️. More worried about off leash dogs… have 2 of those too
You know, the funniest thing is...I am terrified of spiders. When they're in the room with me I jump and can't be anywhere near them. I started watching your videos because I don't /want/ to be afraid of spiders, and actually think they're sort of cool, I just can't help my reaction to them ;-; I find it cool that you appreciate them and keep them as pets and I enjoy watching your videos despite my fear. I only wish people weren't so judgemental.

Omg yay it's back?! Roll on payday!
@@EFergDindrane dude tysm that’s awesome to hear 🫶
Bordum lol
Right? It's maddening. I'm sure the same people don't like her tattoos either. Won't someone think of the children!!! .... And maybe get them good educations about spiders from people like Kat. :p
Love your channel UK 🇬🇧
I love your tattoos ‼️ I have always thought about getting one 😊 The black widow and Recluse do scare me a little but they sure are fun to watch🙂
Your videos are actually helping me with my arachnophobia but I still won’t get a spider as a pet at least for a while
I said the same thing and I got a black widow May 2021. kept her for a year, She passed away about 2 months ago.
I will
This is me. I used to be terrified before I found Kat's videos and about 3 years later, I'm currently shopping for my first pet spider
I have thought about having a spider for a pet, but I enjoy having my daughter-in-law visit. 😂 She has said that if I get a spider she won't set foot in my house. Of course getting a black widow might be a bit much for me. 😊
I got over my severe arachnophobia by buying a few dwarf tarantula species. I love spiders now
My first pet spider was a beautiful juvenile female western black widow I found in the bathroom at work.
How often do you feed them?
Widows are incredibly shy and have good senses and feeling. They see a little bit better than most Web Spiders too.
Let’s not forget that black widows first line of defense is to play dead! 🕷️
True!! I should have mentioned that. The false widows do the same thing and it’s so funny.
I've handled so much black widows and never seen them do that! They must've been comfortable 🤷🏽 goes to show you how harmless they are
@@tarantulakatWidows are Cobweavers, these gals REALLY have to be provoked to bite. 90% of the time, she doesn’t want to. She has Large Volumes of Nerve Venom. It’s those volumes needed to kill dangerous prey like Mud Wasps and Mantid Flies who prey on other Non Web Spiders.
And they’re like LIGHTENING they’re so damn fast
Yes good advice. We shake out all of our clothes and check shoes!
Here in South Africa, we have family of the Brown Recluse. It us called the Violin Spider and the cause horrible lesions when a person gets bitten
Only a matter of time...
I've seen many different news stories about dogs biting children of chewing on their face. Never saw a pet spider in the news!
I'd imagine that's partly because you're more likely to find a careless dog owner than spider owner. Not that I have any concrete evidence of that, but the owners of more unusual pets I've run across seem to just know more about their pet(s)
It’s cute you named her “brownie” after her species name. I named my rescue stray cat “Callie” because she is a calico cat.
I hear ya. A lotta times tiny spiders get in my car and rather than smack them I say hi, how ya doin.
Chris Hardwick is also a good guy
I literally bought myself a G Pulchra after watching a bunch of your videos. Best purchase I ever made
I feel like people who say this don’t realize how many spiders are hidden in and around their home LOL
I'm in Alaska, and we don't have black widows or brown recluse, other than the odd one that might get shipped up in a container.
I dunno. Have you ever seen the movie "Eight Legged Freaks"? 😆
@@MMay2099 LOL!!! Yes, I have. 😜 Also Lavalantula, Ice Spiders, and Arachnophobia. I stand corrected.....
Screw ticks
So spot on. People forget about bark spiders from Arizona. There are also brown widows.
Isn't being the most venomous spider in North America kind of like being the tallest Hobbit?
yes! spiders in north america are mostly harmless. even the two most venomous ones here really aren’t that bad.
Black widows aren’t deadly, and neither are brown recluses.
Love you Kat. Future Entomologist here! Love what you are doing;)
In Australia we call them Red backs and we're very use to them here, we usually find them in our garages
I adore their existence and i say to the people out there
We're all living though a pandemic, uncertainty sending out kids to school, hunger, crime
I send my daughter outside!
Sincerely
MJ and Ms Elayne
Great informational video! Beautiful spiders. Thank you
🎉We live in East TN and my daughter does as well.
Here for confirmation that was definitely the spider in my house ... You have earned my subscription
He still doesn’t want to touch any spiders, but hey, that’s alright I’ll take it!
i just caught a juvenile black widow on my porch this morning! wonderful timing for this video!
Lol
I absolutely love these two babies! Good on you for spreading spider positivity!! ❤
🫶
Hey fellow kiwi 🙌🏻 We have big cool spiders (Avondale and orbwebs are awesome! And our native katipo is gooooorgeous) We just don't have tarantulas :)
Not me watching ur vids to try to get over my arachnophobia it’s kinda helping hopefully I get over the fear
I ordered 2 of the Wednesday plushies ! So excited about that . Love your content ❤
Just ignoring the fact that if such a disaster were to occur that would shake my house that hard, the entire structure would probably have collapsed into a pile of rubble and a dead spider in a jar would be the absolute last thing on my mind (also because I'd probably be dead too 🤣)
Your really helping me not be as afraid of spiders, am still a little scared but now I can tolerate some
If it wasn't for this channel I'd still be petrified of spiders.
Southern Florida also has the Red Widow. There is also a Brown Widow in Africa. They are cousins to the Black Widow.
Red widows are awesome. I have been offered them a few times and may have to accept one of these days.
I get this with dart frogs too.
"Do you have a licence"
"How is it legal to own those?!"
No poison.....
I used to be terrified of all spiders.. I have 3 jumping spiders now! All because of you❤️
Awesome Video Tarantula Kat🙂
I subscribe to exotics lair and you come up on my recommended.
I am petrified of spiders, but still fascinated at a screen distance😅. You’re the first woman i’ve come across with such a big spider/tarantula collection.
New subscriber and i love your content, also the adorable little habitats make things way less scary for me.
Something that also got my heart, when i saw your habitat decor of mushrooms and spooky things, it’s hella cute😭
I find your videos so interesting, i’m glad i stumbled across you by accident 🙏🏻
Oooh I saw those amazing containers today at DFW reptarium in Texas and they are way too cute!
I love when you highlight these terrifying beasties!😆
Omg I just looked it up, they're so pretty!
OMG THAT SPOODER CHICKEN NUGGET FROM MCDONALDS. CHILDHOOD MEMORY UNLOCKED. I LOVED that toy. Yenno... Im gonna hit up ebay. Thank you LOL
I kept a black widow for a while, it was fun to watch!
Tarantula Kat doesn't play when it comes to spiders. Keep it over 9000!
More worried about off leash dogs… have 2 of those too
BWs live 3-4 years.
