I have severe arachnophobia. Watching your videos is helping me to not fear spiders so badly. I even have been tjinking of maybe geting a jumping spider. When you handle your tarantulas do their hairs get on you as they're moving around?
I'm in the 'do not handle' camp, but that is more for their protection than mine. I'm a recovering arachnophobe and whilst I'm 90% there, I wouldn't trust myself not to instinctively panic and fling one across the room if it made any unexpected moves. I think you need to know your own limits as well as the spoods!
Oh heck, childhood memory time!! My first experience with Tarantulas was on the playground in Flagstaff Arizona when I was 11. It was breeding season for Flagstaff Orange Tarantulas (I'll look up scientific name later) which are a local variety close to A. Chalcodes. The males were wandering looking for a female and they were just so cool with us kids scooping them up and playing with them. In a non violent, non serial killer way.
I appreciate that despite the large number of people who disagree with handling you still safely proceed to do it and appreciate the living being. It's nice to represent the safe handling of them and show that "handlers" can be the sweetest and most careful people! You rock!
I got myself a Tliltocatl albopilosus - everyone keeps mentioning how easy, laid-back and calm these spiders are. Well, mine is a spawn straight out of hell - she has an OBT attitude 😂 I handled my Hysterocrates gigas last week - accidentally 😂 she just bolted onto my hand and sat there for about 5 minutes before I could get her off - very stressful 5 minutes for me 😂
🤣 my T. albopilosus isn't laid back either. She is food aggressive. One time my son BEGGED me to let him handle her ( I don't try to handle but he always wants to) I gloved him up and told him we had to gently touch her back legs or bum to test her mood. As soon as I touched her back leg with the paint brush she spun around SO fast and grabbed the brush out of my hand. It scared the sh*t out of me. She then realized it wasn't food and dumped the brush into her water bowl (her garbage)
I hold my Texas brown tarantula she is so sweet, just walks right out of enclosure and onto my hand most of the time, and so gentle when I feed her with the tongs takes the pray so slowly. Love your videos keep up the hard work.
I have two female trantulas. A Mexican Red Knee (bought her as a sling and she is full grown now). And a Brazilian Black juvenile. I have not tried to handle either of them yet. However, when I was a kid we had property in East County San Diego, CA. My dad grew citrus and macadamia trees. Sometimes there would be abandoned gopher holes. He would put the hose down the hole and a wet wild Desert Blonde trantula would crawl out. I would sit down on the ground and hold the t for a while. I must have handled about three dozen trantulas during my preteen years. I never had a problem with them kicking hair and was never bitten! I sure loved those trantulas. I may add a Desert Blonde to my collection in the near future. I have also had handable Pink Toes and Rose Hairs in the past. I just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you.
i just wanted to give you a MASSIVE thank you as before i started watching you i was very scared of spiders and tarantulas specifically always terrified me, but now i see them in a totally different light! i work with kids and one of the kids i work with is a big antscanada and exotics lair fan lol and he kept catching spiders but they would die or escape in his lil homemade enclosures. using your videos as a guide i went to my local reptile supply store and got a sling enclosure that i filled with substrate, moss, leaf litter and a cutting from one of my plants :) and now hes got a jumping spider buddy in his room! i really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos ❤️

Obt are only as defensive as their enclosure is bad. If their in a good semi arboreal setup with deep substrate them are not orange bitey things, just orange flighty things 😂
Personally not a fan of handling, I have done it a few times while rehousing when they’ve ran off, I enjoyed it however I don’t think it’s worth the risks. I liked your video though, good instructions and info
I would a love a do NOT handle video. This one was super helpful thank you. I personally have never handled any of mine but I'd rather be educated about the topic should the opportunity/need arise. I had always wondered whether they could be "tamed" down so I'm happy you answered that question too.

I would totally watch a video about species you wouldn’t hold! I’ve tried to hold my pink toe but it kept trying to jump so I just haven’t tried with my other 20 tarantulas 🤷🏼♂️ Also I used to be a huge arachnophobe so it’s tough for me to go that far and hold them still, but I’m not afraid of them when I have the lid open and my hand in the cage 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️

I love that you are so respectful towards them and always put their health and wellbeing first. So many people, especially in the community of "creepy" animals like spiders, snakes and so on, are so incredibly disrespectful and careless with these animals, handling them very violently and causing them great distress. It's obvious that you truly love animals, and I so appreciate that. ❤
You are so Right about their moods before handling. My G. pulchripes recently molted and her personality went from docile and inquisitive to bolty and bratty, with threat posturing. She used be quite east to handle, now, not so much. But on the plus side, I usually don't handle my T's. Once my A. chalcodes ( Her name is Spider Woman for the Navajo deity that taught the Navajo people how to weave.) ,decided to run up my arm when I was cleaning her enclosure, and ran to my back. I carefully had to take off my t-shirt and looked but couldn't find her. I eventually found her, perched happily on the top of my head like a new hair ornament...lol! AND, she didn't want to get off either. The G. rosea and the T. albopilosus tend to usually be docile most times, at least mine are. Thank you. I would be interested in the ones I'd never handle. Old worlds, not!

I'm trying to think what it must be like to be in your home. It's like zoology, in your face. I love your snapping turtle. He is cute, but he's already tough. It's like going to the zoo. How are you set up for sound? You try to go for quiet, but your little buddies move around. I guess I should just watch your videos.

I love that you film from the ground and do you interaction that way. I saw from a thumbnail exotics lair just lost a tarantula because he had the glass open, feeding a new world species of all things from at least 4 ft up and she lunged out. The rest I can’t describe and I was livid. All keepers know how important it is to keep them low to the ground. I guess some arboreal species are not quite so scary with that but with a new world it’s like guaranteed death. If something could happen easily to cause a tarantula death, why on earth would you do it? So far, you and Richard seem to do everything from a lower place and really you are the only person who always handles that low. I really appreciate it and glad your videos don’t give me the wrong kind of heart attack… thank you for that for sure! ❤
Back in the summer of 1976 a high school friend of mine rescued a beautiful brown and black Tarantula on the highway on the way to LukenbachTx. He put him in an aquarium he bought at Goodwill he named him George. My friend kept him for three years and he let him go in the Garland State Forest. George was a friendly Tarantula
I believe Bowser would do handstands and backflips for food🤣🤣🤣. He is adorbs. Zilly, my E Campestratus was very tame as a sling but is now very shy and somewhat bolty now. She's even bit the tongs once in which I was 100% not expecting and made my knees kinda weak🤣🤣🤣. Great picks Kat... I agree with all of them. Tyfs God bless you
I agree with all the things you say about handling, and i love that you watch for your tarantulas becoming stressed because so many people say its too stressful for tarantulas to be handled, but i think if you can read your tarantulas body language its okay
when i was a kid i held a T like the first one you showed at a local Adventureairium, well more like it walked on my and my classes hands. it was a nice ticklely feeling. also your bowser is such a charater and i love him.
Now if I could just figure out a way to handle my H. Maculata...🤔🤔🤔 Seriously tho, I appreciate these types of videos. While I don't plan on handling my Ts, I realize there are people who are going to handle theirs, and it's better to just educate someone on how to do it as safely as possible rather than go on a rant about why they shouldn't.
This is a fantastic video! Would definitely love to see a video on what species you don’t recommend handling and showing your tarantulas who don’t like it at all.
I agree with your stance. VERY occasional handling, under certain circumstances, with a limited number of species and specimens, with all possible precautions taken. I may handle a few times a year, if that. I don't do it much anymore, but don't write it off entirely. Thanks for this perspective!
Lilith and Helena are my two favorite tarantulas in your collection, it was awesome to see them in the same video! Velvet is definitely going to become a favorite of mine too I think, her personality is so friendly and laidback. And Bowser is a delight as always.
Wonderful, informative video - thank you! Someone may have already said this, but also, sometimes their personalities will change after a molt. My A. Chalcodes girl would always crawl out onto my hand and sit for a looooong time. But she molted about a month ago, and she is not showing any interest in climbing out at all yet. Which is fine, of course. I also have an adult male curly hair and he has no interest in handling, though he does seem to enjoy sticking his toes out the slats of his critter keeper to get boops. ;)
On types that are usually considered handle-able or just docile spiders that can be crazy I can attest to how variable smithi/hamorii temperament can be. I had THE most high strung smithi (who unfortunately passed away recently) that was the total opposite of what most tarantula guides tell you about the temperament of those species. Most iconic moment to me about how wildly tense that spider was was after a rehouse I did. Moved him into a bigger enclosure and watched him explore for a bit, there was this rocky hide in his new enclosure that he tried to climb, but he lost his footing and fell off (a very tiny fall though, he was okay!). I watched him kick hairs the moment he fell… because he thought he was under attack. That T had the biggest bald spot ever, and I seldom messed with him beyond feeding and watering. Goes to show no matter how recommended some species are for being docile, you can and will get a nutty individual and have to be prepared for that. :P

I just found out my grammastola quirogoi molted today and it was a total surprise. They are super observant and not very responsive. Im hoping they will be one of the ones that just wants to walk from the enclosure to my hand lol Yours are beautiful!
theres a coupleve things I would also say about handling tarantuals. first always remember they dont get anything out of being handled. they dont enjoy it or benefit from it, its literally just a risk for them, that they might fall and be injured or if they get spooked by a vibration or draught they might bolt and run away and be lost. the only one getting anything out of it is the keeper. and also if you have a spider thats always been super tame and doesnt mind being handled, when it moults it might easily change personality completely. I had a A chalcodes that was very very docile then it moulted and now its quite fierce and I cant handle it any more at all. but ofc that can go the other way too like if you have a bad tempered spider it might totally chill out after moulting oh and also, ppls reaction to urticating hairs can get worse with repeated exposure. so if your spiders make you icchy, the more you handle them that might get worse
So true. I do have an Arizona Blonde that is like "Let me out" My king baboon is also unusually docile, mind you I refuse to handle that one but my daughter did. Gbb is crazy fast!! Even my Brazilian Black is fast, also have a salmon bird eater, never would purposely hold one, but that Arizona Blonde and sometimes even my Mexican red knee are like "we are coming out" Definitely as always depends on the temperament and species, love your videos!!

Hi Kat on my last comment I said my brown recluse suddenly died. It died I thought…. It wasn’t moving for a couple days and IT CAME BACK TO LIFE and… died again. I wonder if it will come back to life again 🤔 [edit it came back to life again… edit2 IT DID IT AGAIN!!
Personally I am pro handling as long as you take proper precautions and respect the T. My female G. Pulchripes is very tolerant and i always test her temperament before handling and what not.
A few years ago I came across this UA-cam channel called exotic lair and it is a guy who has multiple pet tarantulas who are really beautiful but I really wanted one and my parents said no obviously but now I’m looking at jumping spiders and they are okay with them because they are very cute so I can’t wait to get my first jumping spider but I will always hold a place in my heart for the tarantulas ❤❤❤

I personally keep Scorpions (P. Imperator) and definitely agree that even in the same species, they can have different "personalities/temperaments". My one lady is very reliably handleable, very casual wandering on me calmly where as my other is very much a wild-card and defensive.
What about velvets? And i have a general rule, only if it’s been recently fed and if it comes out while rehousing. Sooooo I’ve held ONE of my T’s ONCE and I’ve held my velvet spiders a few times. But i am wayyy to nervous to hold any of my slings/juveniles. Lol I have learned everything I know from you! I love that you’re so REAL. Like you see all sides of all the discussions…hope that makes sense lol
I never handled any of mine as they were all slings and bolty. But I did get to hold one of my friends G. Rosea she was over 10 years old and super chill! Was Soo cool!!

I live on the island of Java. A tarantula in my house took up the habit of sitting on my foot and climbing on me while I sleep. First time I woke and she was on my foot, my survival instinct said 'go back to sleep if you don't want to get bit' so that what I did. One day, I put my shoe on, and there was a tapping on my toe. Tap tap tap.. Three taps, then a little while later, three taps.. I didn't know what was in there, but you will have guessed it was the same tarantula, I took the shoe off, she climbed out of the shoe, I put my hand down, and she climbed up on my hand. Do your tarantulas purr when stroked? This one did. So I don't think they are as simple minded as some think, or maybe it's the species, this one is dark grey and very furry.. That's pretty complicated and willful behavior, and tapping my toe instead of biting, is kinda amazing.. Javanese tarantulas in general are not aggressive, however.. Large spiders here, in general, seem to be somewhat clever.

I saw from a thumbnail exotics lair just lost a tarantula because he had the glass open, feeding a new world species of all things from at least 4 ft up and she lunged out. The rest I can’t describe and I was livid. All keepers know how important it is to keep them low to the ground. I guess some arboreal species are not quite so scary with that but with a new world it’s like guaranteed death. If something could happen easily to cause a tarantula death, why on earth would you do it? So far, you and Richard seem to do everything from a lower place and really you are the only person who always handles that low.

Back in the summer of 1976 a high school friend of mine rescued a beautiful brown and black Tarantula on the highway on the way to LukenbachTx. He put him in an aquarium he bought at Goodwill he named him George. My friend kept him for three years and he let him go in the Garland State Forest. George was a friendly Tarantula
I believe Bowser would do handstands and backflips for food🤣🤣🤣. He is adorbs. Zilly, my E Campestratus was very tame as a sling but is now very shy and somewhat bolty now. She's even bit the tongs once in which I was 100% not expecting and made my knees kinda weak🤣🤣🤣. Great picks Kat... I agree with all of them. Tyfs God bless you

I agree with all the things you say about handling, and i love that you watch for your tarantulas becoming stressed because so many people say its too stressful for tarantulas to be handled, but i think if you can read your tarantulas body language its okay
when i was a kid i held a T like the first one you showed at a local Adventureairium, well more like it walked on my and my classes hands. it was a nice ticklely feeling. also your bowser is such a charater and i love him.

Seriously tho, I appreciate these types of videos. While I don't plan on handling my Ts, I realize there are people who are going to handle theirs, and it's better to just educate someone on how to do it as safely as possible rather than go on a rant about why they shouldn't.

I agree with your stance. VERY occasional handling, under certain circumstances, with a limited number of species and specimens, with all possible precautions taken. I may handle a few times a year, if that. I don't do it much anymore, but don't write it off entirely. Thanks for this perspective!
Lilith and Helena are my two favorite tarantulas in your collection, it was awesome to see them in the same video! Velvet is definitely going to become a favorite of mine too I think, her personality is so friendly and laidback. And Bowser is a delight as always.
Wonderful, informative video - thank you! Someone may have already said this, but also, sometimes their personalities will change after a molt. My A. Chalcodes girl would always crawl out onto my hand and sit for a looooong time. But she molted about a month ago, and she is not showing any interest in climbing out at all yet. Which is fine, of course. I also have an adult male curly hair and he has no interest in handling, though he does seem to enjoy sticking his toes out the slats of his critter keeper to get boops. ;)

On types that are usually considered handle-able or just docile spiders that can be crazy I can attest to how variable smithi/hamorii temperament can be. I had THE most high strung smithi (who unfortunately passed away recently) that was the total opposite of what most tarantula guides tell you about the temperament of those species. Most iconic moment to me about how wildly tense that spider was was after a rehouse I did. Moved him into a bigger enclosure and watched him explore for a bit, there was this rocky hide in his new enclosure that he tried to climb, but he lost his footing and fell off (a very tiny fall though, he was okay!). I watched him kick hairs the moment he fell… because he thought he was under attack. That T had the biggest bald spot ever, and I seldom messed with him beyond feeding and watering. Goes to show no matter how recommended some species are for being docile, you can and will get a nutty individual and have to be prepared for that. :P

I just found out my grammastola quirogoi molted today and it was a total surprise. They are super observant and not very responsive. Im hoping they will be one of the ones that just wants to walk from the enclosure to my hand lol Yours are beautiful!

theres a coupleve things I would also say about handling tarantuals. first always remember they dont get anything out of being handled. they dont enjoy it or benefit from it, its literally just a risk for them, that they might fall and be injured or if they get spooked by a vibration or draught they might bolt and run away and be lost. the only one getting anything out of it is the keeper.
and also if you have a spider thats always been super tame and doesnt mind being handled, when it moults it might easily change personality completely. I had a A chalcodes that was very very docile then it moulted and now its quite fierce and I cant handle it any more at all. but ofc that can go the other way too like if you have a bad tempered spider it might totally chill out after moulting
oh and also, ppls reaction to urticating hairs can get worse with repeated exposure. so if your spiders make you icchy, the more you handle them that might get worse

My king baboon is also unusually docile, mind you I refuse to handle that one but my daughter did.

Even my Brazilian Black is fast, also have a salmon bird eater, never would purposely hold one, but that Arizona Blonde and sometimes even my Mexican red knee are like "we are coming out"

Personally I am pro handling as long as you take proper precautions and respect the T. My female G. Pulchripes is very tolerant and i always test her temperament before handling and what not.

A few years ago I came across this UA-cam channel called exotic lair and it is a guy who has multiple pet tarantulas who are really beautiful but I really wanted one and my parents said no obviously but now I’m looking at jumping spiders and they are okay with them because they are very cute so I can’t wait to get my first jumping spider but I will always hold a place in my heart for the tarantulas ❤❤❤

I personally keep Scorpions (P. Imperator) and definitely agree that even in the same species, they can have different "personalities/temperaments". My one lady is very reliably handleable, very casual wandering on me calmly where as my other is very much a wild-card and defensive.
What about velvets? And i have a general rule, only if it’s been recently fed and if it comes out while rehousing. Sooooo I’ve held ONE of my T’s ONCE and I’ve held my velvet spiders a few times. But i am wayyy to nervous to hold any of my slings/juveniles. Lol I have learned everything I know from you! I love that you’re so REAL. Like you see all sides of all the discussions…hope that makes sense lol
I never handled any of mine as they were all slings and bolty. But I did get to hold one of my friends G. Rosea she was over 10 years old and super chill! Was Soo cool!!

I live on the island of Java. A tarantula in my house took up the habit of sitting on my foot and climbing on me while I sleep. First time I woke and she was on my foot, my survival instinct said 'go back to sleep if you don't want to get bit' so that what I did. One day, I put my shoe on, and there was a tapping on my toe. Tap tap tap.. Three taps, then a little while later, three taps.. I didn't know what was in there, but you will have guessed it was the same tarantula, I took the shoe off, she climbed out of the shoe, I put my hand down, and she climbed up on my hand. Do your tarantulas purr when stroked? This one did. So I don't think they are as simple minded as some think, or maybe it's the species, this one is dark grey and very furry.. That's pretty complicated and willful behavior, and tapping my toe instead of biting, is kinda amazing.. Javanese tarantulas in general are not aggressive, however.. Large spiders here, in general, seem to be somewhat clever.
