    Hi Dr Foster~ are you saying that hyperextension in her elbow is actually better for her shoulder joint when doing a weight bearing pose in her case? And that we as yoga teachers should not automatically see hyperextension of joints as a weak link? Thank you for this video! Namaste.

    • @Ariele.Foster
      @Ariele.Foster  5 років тому +2

      Hi Robin, I didn't look at Clare's general upper extremity weightbearing -- just looked at her weightbearing with the arms behind the plane of the body for purvottonasana here. Generally speaking, there is no need to tell someone to back off of their natural range of motion even if it includes some hyperextension of the elbow or knee. So yes, I agree yoga teachers should not "automatically see hyperextension of joints" as a bad thing. As with all of our cues in teaching yoga, we should have a reason for giving them, and be able to see how that reason works in the body (mind...spirit...) of the yoga student in front of us :)

    Hi .Dr foster. My two hand 28 degre carrying angel solutions please

    • @Ariele.Foster
      @Ariele.Foster  4 роки тому

      hmm, carrying angle is natural state of the elbow - not the hand. Carrying angle of 28 is within normal. Also, if you are talking about your elbow, it's how your skeleton is built. Don't try to change that, please.

    Thanks for this post. What about hypermobility in plank, up dog and down dog? These are much more common postures and I'm uncertain if I'm causing myself damage by what I feel is full expression of the posture but what others see as hyperextension. As someone who is hypermobile in the elbows, should pr shouldn't I try to find a microbend through vinyasas?

    • @Ariele.Foster
      @Ariele.Foster  5 років тому +1

      hi Lea, it all depends. If your elbow hyperextension (I think this is what you mean when you say hypermobility) is even on both sides, not too extreme (i.e. not 30 degrees or more of hyperextension -- a LOT!) and if you are able to maintain muscular engagement in your arms and not "hang" in your elbow ligaments as you move through the vinyasa, then you are probably fine. That said, if you want advise specific to you, please seek out an orthopedic physical therapist :)

    Hi Dr. Foster, hope you're well.
    I wanna ask, can passive hyperextension of elbow be reduced from 15° to 10°. Is there any exercise to reduce this angle?
    Please let me know about it. I'll be grateful to you in anticipation.

    • @Ariele.Foster
      @Ariele.Foster  3 роки тому

      What you are describing is your boney and ligamentous structure. Possibly you can change it over a long period of time, but I think a better goal is to focus on what you are capable of doing (control, strength in all activities). Elbow hyperextensibility is not a pathology.

    I Have Carrying Angle Of left Hand is 25°
    Is That Exercise Applicable to Correct it to Normal 15°?

      Carrying angle is natural state of the elbow - not the hand. Carrying angle of 25 is within normal. It's how your skeleton is built. Don't try to change that, please.

    Would those with hypermobile joints who habitually lock them not be prone to increased wear and tear of the joint?

    • @Ariele.Foster
      @Ariele.Foster  4 роки тому +1

      It would be difficult if not impossible to pass the ethical standards for a true clinical trial to prove or disprove this hypothesis, but let me ask you this: why would the joint surface of a hypermobile person be more likely to get wear and tear than the joint surface of someone who does not have hypermobility. same cartilage! Just "locking" (straightening) at different aspects of the surface.
      There is some evidence from current research showing NO correlation between hypermobility and osteoarthritis (joint wear and tear). Here are the two recent studies that I can cite off the top of my head:
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30975124/ ; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15248215/ (both actually show that joint hypermobility may be protective) ; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27463535/ - this shows there *may* be a correlation with knee OA.
      Then this: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29669593/ "there were no associations between hypermobility and [radiographically proven osteoarthritis]"
      There is NO definitive evidence that "locking" the joints leads to arthritis. There is plenty of evidence that all of us should be strengthening our bodies throughout our life, so that is the thing to focus on.

      But I have noticed in my years of teaching that it's very often students with hypermobility who seem to have joint problems. Could this then be due to lack of muscle tone rather than the locking of joints?
