  • Cartoon Network had a special 5 part event on their channel called Cartoon Network Invaded that would feature aliens being involved within their programs. Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, Ed, Edd n Eddy, My Gym Partner's A Monkey, Camp Lazlo and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy... but this special event was all about aliens looking for some cheese and for an interesting reason that happened behind the scenes.

I remember watching the Foster's episode during the event and me and my sister playing together like Cheese and Frankie. But I think my favorite part was the first ending of the event since it made it seem like the whole network was invaded and all the cartoons lived together which was special to me and still is.

Yeah, just like how it happened in Jimmy's nightmare. Only, unlike premonitions, the ending implies it apparently happened WHILE Jimmy was asleep. I mean things that happen while you're asleep, kinda have their way of getting into your dreams. I've experienced it. Like seeing someone in your dream making a "buzz, buzz, buzz" noise because your alarm clock is going off in the real world.
Why the aliens abducted the entire cul-de-sac is anyone's guess.

@@kidprime6863I have a theory about the Ed’s are coming the Ed’s are coming. They definitely had the script for most of the episode done before and it was going to be its own standalone episode until they made AKA rework the theme with jimmys dream and the ending to make it more tangentially related to Cartoon Network invaded. I remember watching this cross through as a kid. It was weird, funny and spooky.
Makes me wish that kraft still went with the sponsor deal, would’ve made a lot more sense to kids like me who constantly asked what dairy products have to do with aliens.
Also, I’m surprised and irked that Ben 10 was never integrated into the event. You’ve got a kid who can turn into aliens, so it makes sense wanting to see him fight a race of dairy-obsessed aliens.

    • @seantaylor424
      @seantaylor424 11 місяців тому +34

Ben 10 was even one of CN's original shows and was popular enough to sell Kraft. I guess Ben 10 had enough clout to opt out of this or even CN decided that tying a more serious show to a product tie-in may have hurt more than help. Maybe for the best, though, since aliens invading for cheese, of all things, would only be slightly above the scope of a regular Ben 10 episode, but at the cost of lowered stakes.

Was curious so I looked it up, it might've been because they were between seasons during the event. Looking at the timelines, Invaded was in May 2007, Ben 10 Season 3 ended in April 2007 and Season 4 began in July 2007. Plus, since Season 4 was the final season given of the Ben 10 Classic series, it might also mean they were more interested in closing the series instead of having aliens steal the cheese.

About KND not being part of the Cheese-Alien event, I remember there was an episode where the KND tree-house gets invaded by giant lice, and the way the kids find to fight them is shooting piping hot nacho cheese at them.
I wonder if that episode was originally envisioned to be somehow part of the whole thing and they chose to exchange the aliens for giant lice once the deal with Kraft fell off.
It's weird, since even though lice die if exposed to high temperature, the fixation on using cheese against them seems oddly specific.
They never even consider going for hot soup or hot water or hot chocolate or even some sort of sci-fi death ray or anything.

I loved the concept of this when it first came out but I ended up only liking two of the episodes: Ed, Edd, n Eddy & Grim Adventures.
The Ed's episode had some great animation with great use of shadows and dramatic lighting. It had some genuinely creepy vibes between Jimmy's dream, the growing paranoia among the kids, and the real abduction at the end.
The Grim episode was just a wild roller coaster from start to finish. Plus it was fun seeing Billy/ Grim bring back Billy's old superhero persona and having the raven narrator show back up, and having Sperg sing "Butter Cup Dandy" before blowing up because that was the song he was practicing in the first season so he could one day perform on Broadway.
Its to bad the other three episodes kind of felt generic/ lack luster in comparison. Also doubly weird that the Ed, Edd, n Eddy episode had the most effort put into it since the show's creator Dan Antonucci has a reputation for not liking any Network interference on the show.

But the whole plan to actually tie the shows was truly something.
The Foster one made me laugh with all the shenanigans that happened to the others but it was ok at best.
The Ed Edd and Eddy one was weird at first but it was great.

Billy and Mandy and Ed, Edd, n Eddy make the most sense because of theme surrounded with BnM while EEnE had so many bizarre things happening throughout the Cul-da-sac. I honestly thought this was a fever dream because of Fusion Fall.

Funny enough, this wouldn't be the last time these shows would be involved in a "Alien-themed" crossover event; as more than a year later, we would get that MMO crossover game Cartoon Network FusionFall.

Man, this is a blast from the past, have vague memories of when CN was invaded. Cleanest of those memories was Ed, Edd, Eddy's invasion and Grim Adventure's flash game, only have vaguely familiar memories of the rest except for Gym Partner, and that eerie theme chime during the commercial breaks, oh man I swear, my brain's flashing like a Christmas tree with the memories popping back in. Although, there is one bit that's floating around up there that's not accounted for, scenes of other CN franchises attempting to fight back against the invasion during the commercial breaks, but I could be imagining things since it was over a year ago.

These shows were well after my time, but I definitely love the crossover idea and it being based on an alien invasion, even jf it did come from a Marketing mandate (that was how Marvel's Secret Wars comic series was inspired and that's a classic). I can only imagine how blown away I'd have been as a kid if one of my Saturday morning cartoon networks (ABC, CBS or NBC) had done such a narative thread (whether comical or serious).

How did I know the platypus in the MGPAM episode was voiced by Gilbert Gottfried. Like, all traces of that episode are completely gone, I dont remember a single line to base it on but as soon as I saw that platypus on screen my brain went "oh yeah that character is voiced by Gilbert Gottfried" so I looked it up to confirm and sure enough there he is on the -- weirdly detailed and thoroughly filled out -- fandom wiki, the credit is there. Memory is wacky.

You know, I can't remember if The Grim Adventures of the KND was before or after CN Invaded, but it does make me happy to see the multi-show crossover concept wasn't just a one-off, that the various shows (along with almost everything else running on CN at the time, frame-by-frame the Delightful Reaper's destruction for cameos galore) canonically, and consistently, exist in a single shared universe. It kind of is a shame Ben 10 wasn't involved (pretty sure he's still confirmed same-universe via the CN City bumpers, which raises _many more_ questions, like why do the Plumbers never mention the KND Moon Base), but I guess I can understand the crossover's wackiness wasn't really compatible with the show's more serious tone...

I honestly really liked the big "cross-over", both back then and still now. I completely understand how the thing has some rough history, and I feel that Kraft shouldn't have pulled out like that and left Cartoon Network "holding the bag" like that, but I do still like the results that came out. Ed, Edd, n Eddy's episode is especially my favorite since the story is entertaining and it's beginning and end are so dark by comparison to the whole show. Also while I can understand other people not getting the dairy/cheese based plot lines, back when these first came out I always thought it was a reference to the old wives' tale that "the moon was made of cheese" tying in to the alien and space themeing of the event.
Honestly, even if they're not the best, I just love when shows do massive crossovers like this because it feels like some massive event that the network is holding for these shows.

  • @dantesrubbish22

I always thought the alternate ending with the aliens on the moon was the true ending because I only ever saw a glimpse of the “drink the combined brain juice of dumb characters” scene when it first aired.
But I never saw the *ending* ending with the Moon Base and Numbahs 1-5 just chillin. It should’ve made sense when we can see the aliens making a cardboard cutout of Numbah 2.
