  • In this restored footage of "James Taylor In Concert," James performs his song "Steamroller Blues“ on the popular BBC series ‘In Concert‘ on November 16, 1970.
"In Concert" was produced by the BBC in the early '70s and featured performances from legendary acts of the time. In November 1970, James was 22 years old and his second studio album "Sweet Baby James," featuring “Steamroller Blues,“ had released earlier that same year.

    LYRICS
    Steamroller Blues - James Taylor
    Well, I’m a steamroller, baby
I’m bound to roll all over you
Yes, I’m a steamroller now, baby
I’m bound to roll all over you
I’m gonna inject your soul with some sweet rock ‘n roll
And shoot you full of rhythm and blues
    Well, I’m a cement mixer
A churning urn of burning funk
Yes, I’m a cement mixer for you, baby
A churning urn of burning funk
    Well, I’m a d-d-demolition derby (yeah)
A hefty hunk of steaming junk
Now, I’m a love bomb, baby
Just guaranteed to blow your mind
Yeah, I’m a love bomb for you, baby
Oh, guaranteed, just guaranteed to blow your mind
And if I can’t have your love for my own (now)
Sweet child, won’t be nothing left behind
    It seems how lately, baby
Well I’m a steamroller for you, baby, child

I think this is perfect. His story going into it is awesome. I love how he turns it into a funny thing. It takes the pressure off him messing up the guitar part a little bit. It's perfect showmanship. He was so ahead of everyone else on the guitar I believe. He could write a song lyrics and music in 10 to 15 minutes. Yes it wasn't refined and perfect but he had the basis of a perfect song in 15 minutes. Then him and his musician friends could critique it and perfect it. Within 2 hours, there's a song. A master at his craft. He must of ate, slept. And breathed a guitar

Love the creative nature if this song, the wit and humor of James Taylor fused with a legit blues tune, and made perfect by his imitations , his limitations and his humility , while still trying to be the funky one. I sing this song all the time , as well as that blues that grows in the backyard of my soul.
