I agree, this episode was very rushed, but that didn't mean I hated it either. Definitely should've been two to three parts, but I do think this is due to production issues and where CN/Adult Swim stands now. Anyways about this last episode and I feel this will get real deep. I really, REALLY hated that I saw some spoilers and I really went about trying to avoid those myself so I could witness it myself. Aside from that, this episode really did had me in deep emotions because even without those spoilers, I had a feeling Spear may no longer be around or be relevant to the era they would be currently in as shown in the painting he made. I knew right there that he was the last of his kind once standing there alone. As for the fight, again this was rushed, but I do want people to take this in. What the hell was Spear and Fang supposed to do against a demon of vengeance and that's where it really hit me... a sacrifice had to be made and when I saw Spear crying out to Fang when she got burned by the Viking and when Spear himself got caught into the fire engulfed in the flames, nothing mattered no more, but the people he wanted to protect, so he went all out to make sure that demon was pushed away as far as possible, even if it meant that Spear himself would die. Of course the Viking survived and somewhat Spear, but as the Viking said Vidarr, this might've meant his deal was done, therefore Vidarr itself took the Viking forever to be enslaved by it as an ironic thing. And now Mira comes in to rid of any of the remaining flames off of Spear. Now this is probably what some people thought was controversial which was Mira carrying over Spear's offspring. I get that some may have think, "Oh, this isn't a romantic moment." or "Is she really doing him all seared up that way?!", but I think it runs deeper (no pun intended) than that. I think in my opinion this was due to the fact that Mira saw what was on the painting of Spear's, she realized that he was the only one left and through all the things he put himself through to even save Mira, I truly think it was a "Thank you." than it was a couple's moment because you have to remember the world of Primal is to survive and spread life with no rules to dictate that whatsoever. Yes, it's sad that Spear and Mira may have not really had something that would probably have them be together, but I wanted to reiterate that Spear no longer feels to be a part of where he stands, so for better or worse this was perhaps the best course of action to go on about. Also to end this off, I do feel again this was rushed due to the problems going about Warner, but honestly I think I wouldn't want this to keep going as this was a good thing going and I would hate this to be ruined. I do get that Gennedy mentioned that Primal is a world that isn't just revolved around Spear and Fang, but maybe this should end for the better for the great work of art he's made through the production of this show and this will forever be one of my favorites.
Could also be that vidarr was insulted that he ended the deal when spear was still alive, but then again he killed more than just spear and spear died later. Maybe it got pissed he didn’t kill everyone there and just ended it when he got what HE already wanted. And for spear and Mira’s emergency child, it feels rushed and I get that back then and in some cultures, having a kid was just a replacement. And it didn’t set with everyone which makes sense and still could’ve been a two parter, but it wasn’t unacceptable
@@Dookieman1975 Maybe. Overall, even if Spear was to survive, he was without a doubt through and would no longer be the person he once was. Yeah and for that I think Mira in good faith wanted a part of Spear to be around because he meant so much especially for Fang.
In my opinion Fang is way too smart to be just "domesticated". She has a higher consciousness, she can use reason, she's aware of her own instincts as she stops to think before acting, she can manipulate the environment, she understands Spear on the same level and they basically have a language of their own, she can make wise decisions in the moment, signaling a good memory.
In defense of Fang bailing, she's a simple creature, she's got those powerful fight or flight instincts. No way to fight her best friend dying, so the only option is to run from the pain.
Spear becoming cheif of his people tells me that him, his wife, and his two children were the only survivors left of his tribe. That just proves how savage his home truly was and also how strong Spear was for being the last survivor of his race and keeping his family safe for as long as he did.
I somewhat disagree. While I completely agree spear is super strong, durable, and badass, I honestly think spears bloodline was the only strong ones of his tribe. All the others ran and hid, while his father was the only one willing to fight. Unlike the vikings, it could be that the other members of spears clan only know how to flee, while the leader fights. Maybe spears great great grandfather, great grandfather, and grandfather were all fighting leaders, while the rest cowered.
The Viking chief becoming a snake is more significant than you think. If you remember back in season one spear had nightmares about snakes ever since the ep where he and fang fell in the river and had to fight a bunch of snakes. They both became afraid of snakes after that and avoided large bodies of water. That’s why fang didn’t want to get in the boat to save Mira at first.
If you don’t understand, why is finished the way it did and it felt so rushed , just look into what warner brothers is going through and how they are slashing the budget and canceling all their low rated shows and cost cutting, specially the animation department, it make sense why this happened . I think it was this way or getting out right cancelled. I think it was because of genedy that we even got this far . Even if you look at the last couple of episodes u see so many tricks they are doing to keep the budget low , same shots of war , same shots of just paddling the boat , same shots of spears climbing the stairs . Yeah , u should completely blame new warner brothers for how it ended
@@OUTLAW1345 it’s mostly because it’s animated, the bastards at discovery want to appeal to boomers and believe the animated medium of entertainment is for children and probably don’t even understand the concept of adult animation
@@OUTLAW1345 it’s criminaly underrated duo to fact that there was zero to non marketing behind it and they would just release the episodes in adult swim ( channel and website that is not even available on most countries ) . It was only on season 2 that they started putting them out on hbo max .the only thing that was helping it was word of mouth of people who watched it and were amazed by how great it was
In my theory, the Viking looked different in the shot right when Spear kept coming after getting put on fire. His eyes widened maybe that shock is what may have broken the pact or deal so to speak. But that’s just my bad two cents here. I do think that Vidarr can feel what the Viking feels and was angry how damaged that protective skin he had got from Spear smashing it repeatedly. The Viking probably felt this rush of emotions as well maybe even regrets or guilt that could have broken such a pact with Vidarr. I’m not too positive how the contract between them looked but the whole time the expression looked vengeful right until he saw Spear charging at him. I have many more thoughts about it but it’s all kind of meh in my own opinion.
I got that impression from the way he said vidaar before he was grabbed, it sounded like "it is done" to me like he knew spear wasnt going to survive being immolated like that.
When animals kill your family, generally revenge is taken on the animals, killing the whole pack, ensure safety. When it's a human and an animal, the animal doesn't matter. Generally the animal is a tool for the human to inflict pain. Considering the slavers thought other people were below them enough to use as slaves, I have no doubt they viewed fang as merely a dumb animal used by spear. The viking died, that's how he met Vidarr, the deal wasn't for him to come back to life but to get revenge. (And why would he want to? His entire family and all his friends were killed. He's completely alone in a world he made an enemy of.) So killing fang would be a bonus but spear is the main target. Being a god, I'd say Vidarr can tell when someone is bound for death or not. When spear was burnt to a crisp, Vidarr knew that the deal was done. The viking got his revenge because spear would soon die. The deal was to kill the caveman, not sit and watch the light leave his eyes. "The deal is done, he will die, now you will come back to me and serve me for eternity." Ironically the viking signed himself up for being a slave for all eternity after being a slaver for most if not all his life.
@@erikred8217 dude is in the worst possible pain and on his deathbed. I know he had feelings for Mira but it was almost like she took advantage of him or mounted him in pity. Felt so wrong.
@@isaiescamilla550 she did it because that’s what spear wanted a new spear that could be apart of the family. Did you not see her look at the paintings that spear made before she did it?
I think that when Viking guy was dead or dying he made a deal with the Demon to sell his soul in exchange for revenge. He was transformed into a fire demon as part of the deal. When Spear was mortally wounded, the deal was fulfilled and the Demon reached up to claim Viking guys soul.
@@eliasballeza5388 I'm not sure the viking guy saw Fang as anything more than a steed. That is to say, if he was cursing another Viking, I don't think it would also include cursing said Viking's horse.
I think it's because in that flashback his son looks bigger than he does in the "outline" we see him as in the pilot episode. In the pilot he looks like 5 years old. In the flashback he looks 9 or 10. But the pilot is like, we don't really see, and seeing your family get eaten might distort your perception.
@@UngoogleableMan a thing such as consistent size does not exist in primal my man. Tamau was constantly changing size from being a really big man, to a giant whose knees were on the same height as an adult man’s head
@@JohnnyBravo2550 oh I know, I'm well aware . I was just pointing out why I think some people think the flashback in cold death was spears father. It wasn't. I never thought it was because size aside, the kid in that flashback has the exact same face as the very quick flashback when he's doing shadow puppets in rivers of snakes. Same face and hair. It was obvious to me the whole time the father in that flashback was spear.
Fitting, Spear is chilling in the afterlife with his caveman family and babysitting Fang's deceased babies, while the Chieftan will suffer for eternity, never to see his family again.
All while acting like only his suffering and loss matters. In his mind, spear and fang are monsters that destroyed his world, when they’ve done that to others over and over
@@vexxama yeah it kinda reminds me of the night feeder. because of how similar both the deaths are. because they both suffer ironic fates. the night feeder for all the torment fear and death it inflicted upon others feels that very same fear that all those it has slaughtered has as it has its own life ripped away. where as the chieftain is forever condemned to be a slave to the scorpion king for all eternity because he enslaved and murdered countless lives and chose vengeance over everlasting peace. never being able to see his family again all because of the choices he made in life and in death. it just feels very similar to me because both of the deaths are just so ironic. although arguably the chieftain gets it the worst in my opinion.
i would argue the Viking is worse than the demon because at least the Viking had a choice I'm so fuck him and his vengeance may he rott in hell literally
The fact that Primal actually broke the record for Emmy awards in a single season for an animated show (primetime Emmy's at that). And winning 3 Emmy's for season 1 and being highly critically acclaimed and it STILL ended up being canceled because of the whole WB ownership situation is deeply saddening.
Because the Viking chief was initially being retrieved by the Valkyries until Surtur dragged him to Muspelheim, I'm thinking that in this universe, whatever afterlife that character believes in actually exists and is where they'll go. Meaning, Spear wouldn't go to the same hell/underworld that the viking chief went to.
This episode crushed me. I kept thinking, "There's no way they are gonna kill him. He's gonna pull through. Some deus ex machina bullshit is gonna happen. And I'll be OK with it."
yeah. This whole show got me with that one. more sad than spears death was his isolation. Dreams and history and memories and art all dying at once. I don't know. I'm not saying it was bad but I'm probably out. I liked old spear a lot. Gonna be a different' show now. We'll see.
My headcanon for spear being able to fight the demon dude is that after watching Fang almost die, Spear gained a fraction of power from the demon of Vengance after its flames attached to him. Hence why the viking was suprised
I’d think that lessens it. Spear didn’t get any supernatural powers, he did that by being an incredibly strong and endurant warrior willing to die to win. That has its own kind of magic perhaps, but it wasn’t magic borrowed.
Id like to point out that Spear would never have "died in vain". He sacrificed himself for Fang because he loved her and because he knew she was more important than he was because she had a family.
The thing with that the viking lost hes powers and the demon took him too hell was because after the fall spear was basically already dead and the demon knew it and the pact was over
Hmm, I kinda got the feeling that after the fall Viking guy (whom I call Vidar) lost his thirst for revenge (b/c remember that when Vidar made the pact with the demon dude, the Scorpion King, he showed both Spear and Fang as targets) and so with his vengeance quenched the deal was complete and his soul was taken back to hell.
That's not how it works, he should have only disappeared after Spear died period not just "near death", also Fang should have died too if that were the case.
I feel part of the idea at the end with Vidarr taking him back to "hell" was that he did succeed in killing Speak, not a definite killing blow, but he was dead... on top of that, at that moment, they were both "Avatars of vengeance". So some respect. Not to mention that from here on, Viking dad is forever his slave. And regarding how rushed it feels... Not gonna lie, Gendy is amazing at story telling, but his endings always feel like that xD Samurai Jack had the same issue... Some comments say that Gendy has an issue with being stubborn on the ten episode format. He needs at least 12 to give proper closure but always tries to end it on ten xD
In a series about a man and dinosaur surviving together, it’s kinda disappointing we didn’t get a goodbye scene between Spear & Fang. We just needed 1 more ep. Echoes of Eternity dedicated to the demon battle, and another episode for Spears goodbye. Maybe take out the Mira reading Spears cave art scene and put it in the goodbye episode, that plus spears death taken out of that ep leaves more time for a more interesting last battle. Dedicate the REAL last episode to Mira and dying Spear realizing they love eachother before he kicks it, and have Fang accepting that her battle friend is dying and have a cute goodbye scene.
I agree. Spear just kinda dies, and the show ends 13 seconds later. The viking wife got more screen time for her death then Spear did. I also feel like they should have gone all out with the final battle, or at least have it be a few min longer. Like watching two unstoppable forces collide with eachother, having Spear slowly get more and more exhausted, until his heroic sacrifice in the end. It really should have been 11 episodes.
@@ZillaTheTegu I agree, the immediate time jump to Fang's kids being grown up and Mira already having a kid just feels so rushed, at least have one last scene between Spear and Fang before he's gone. It's weird how some of the side characters had a better send-off than he did.
This episode was the hardest gut punch, i got in a long while. I was hoping the entire time, that the moon god's would interfere and help spear defeat the viking or heal him afterwards.
Forreal I’m like come on. This Viking dude gets turned into a fire demon and I was hoping spear and fang got supernatural intervention. Dammit gennedy! I wanted him to see his daughter too!
you voiced my feelings completely when i didn't know how to voice them properly, we wasted so much time on the Egyptians when the 3 parter should've been about the spear, fang, and the viking
I personally feel like Spear should’ve died and then he would’ve met Mira’s god and because he did so much for Mira and worshipped the god too, it would’ve bestowed some sort of blessing upon Spear and allow him to fight the Vidar demon dude. He would’ve came back and then Spear and Mira could’ve had kids.
YES! See this is exactly like Samurai Jack where the ending should have had that payoff from the gods set up by the story (this being Mira's moon god) to assist the main character so they can have the well deserved happy ending but Genndy just doesnt go for it which kinda sucks because it could've worked for both series and their own endings
The satisfied way Viking Guy said "Vidarr" before being dragged back to hell made me think he was like "I win" seeing how fatally injured Spear is. Then seeing as how he felt like he got his revenge the dark lord was like "You good? Great, back to hell."
Lol, as some people say that it was cause spear was able to fight back, that the dark lord took his power, but your version makes sense as well or it could be both.
To expand on that, the horned god clearly wanted Spear dead (for what reason, I can only hope the show progresses so we get an answer), so once Spear was beyond saving, the viking guy's job was done. "We both got what we wanted, now get down here. What, you thought you'd get some sort of reward? You made a deal with the proverbial devil, you should know how this works!" And I think he was so quick to drag him down because he doesn't want too much exposure of his existence, or that of his work. Despite all of his power, the horned god seems to want to be under the radar. Just what is he plotting...?
@@SirHugsalot13th I don't think Vidarr ( horned dude) specifically wanted Spear dead, but as an Embodiment of Revenge itself, offered the Chieftain a deal after the Chieftain evoked his name at the start of their quest. And like Nerdbeaat said, once Chieftain said Vidarr all smuggly, he basically said " Good. Die suffering you punk. Good enough for me." Vidarr collected his prize.
Personally, I currently think I would have preferred if the scene played out more like this… After the resurrected chieftain gets his body pummeled and smashed against the mountainside, we would see his body revert back to its original self. It would be as if the chieftain’s resurrected form was damaged enough that his power is beginning to leave him. When Mira comes and puts out the fires burning Spear, the reverted chieftain is too broken and weak to attack Mira. When the two stare at each other, the chieftain futility reaches out with his hand and hatefully groans “Vidarr”, right as the demon’s hand then comes to drag him back down. I felt the chieftain reverting back and him getting dragged down could have been separate moments, rather than happening at the same time. The implication I am going for is that the chieftain sold his soul for one more shot at revenge, and with newfound demonic power. And once he was fatally injured again, his shot at revenge was over and it was the demon’s turn to collect his due, even if the chieftain still had yet to murder Fang and Mira.
@@RequiemPoete That's assuming the horned god really is Vidarr. There's a little too much going on there for him to be a simple embodiment of revenge, he is clearly something far more vast in scale, likened to more of a biblical devil than a Norse god. But, by the same token, maybe he is that simple, as it's not like I know of the real-life equivalent god for Nordic mythology. I could be overthinking it, as well as drowning in desire for more Primal.
The ending was disappointing, but season 2 overall exceeded my expectations! We encountered so many different civilizations and cultures I wasn’t expecting. From Arabians, Irish/Celts, Vikings, Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Romans, Philistines, and even people from the Middle Ages. It’s truly incredible how we went from our story starting out with a caveman and a dinosaur to discovering so many advanced cultures!
It's kind of a running theme with Gendy's shows at this point. He makes a pretty good show and THEN they rush to the end, when it's in the middle of a good thing.
I refuse to believe that this is how the story ends. I'm going to find or write some fanfic and go down an unhealthy path of believing that what I read/write is actually cannon.
@@turtlebot323 I agree. I loved how shocking it was. And how it showed the absolute redeeming primal qualities of man and woman (sacrifice and compassion).
I feel even it was rushed, it was the best way to end it. Spear may had died, but his legacy was ensured to live on and remembered hopefully for many generations
To elaborate on why Vikikng guy got dragged down: he fulfilled his vengeance as it was part of the deal with Vidarr/the big demon, so since Spear was basically dying from the third degree burns, there was no more purpose for viking guy roaming about, but that's just my thesis
I kinda like this idea someone gave that Vidarr was simply impressed at Spear's ferocity and will power, and disappointed at the viking for being bested by a mortal man despite all the strength and powers given to him.
I think it was just the "devil" completing what was ultimately a crooked deal. He had his chance at revenge and that was their deal. I initially thought the demon had an interest in killing spear and fang, but now I realize that he was just using the viking's desire for revenge to buy the viking's soul.
I'm sad to see the show go. I shed several tears throughout this episode. Ugh, to think a show about prehistoric life and the journey of a caveman would pull on my heartstrings so much. Load Applause and gratitude to Genndy
That is what's so beautiful about this show...SHOW; don't tell. May you rest in peace, Spear! Your legacy will endure through your family and descendants.
People definitely want more, but Spear's story is over. I'm afraid they'd kill of Fang defending her kids or Spear's daughter if they kept going. I'm fine getting new characters.
Don’t know how they would continue Spear and Fang’s story when Spear is gone. But hopefully they can continue it with different characters like his daughter and Fang’s kids, but it just would’ve be the same without Spear.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tartakovsky is looking to venture forth into an anthology style should Primal return in the future for a season three. Tartakovsky said , "I don't want to do this story further. I feel like this season we've done it all, in a way. I want it to almost become an anthology show, where season 3 would still be called Primal, but with a different subheading. Low-dialogue, high-emotion, survival, rawness, visual storytelling: All that stuff, but with different characters. There's more things I want to do with Primal, not necessarily Spear and Fang. Maybe if there's a giant outcry, we'll continue the story with his daughter and Mira and the dinosaurs. I'd have to really think about it."
@@mr.milkman3893 That honestly is what I thought was going to happen. Because why not?! If a Viking can be brought back by a devil for vengeance, if a witch can be given a baby from a sacrifice, why the hell can't a moon god bring Spear back to life?
@@zacharybartolo5111 it’s not entirely far from possibility. If Genndy does decide to renew Primal for season 3 and decides to continue where we left off, he can definitely write this in as canon. Not to mention this isn’t the first time he retcon his stories, look at samurai jack.
I like how the ending you can tell Mira grew to love Spear from her eyes. And even when he was burned and on deaths door he was still manly enough to screw Mira into having his chold
It felt like she was taking advantage of him. I know that wasn't the intention, but no one with third degree burns would consent to sex. They're either I'm incredible agony, or completely numb all over. Neither makes for a good time. What he wanted was comfort, iI imagine. And instead she used him to get off, leaving him to die either in pain or completely numb. Again, I know this isn't the intention, but it sure looked this way to me.
@@cortster12 brody........get off? first of all, spear's schmeat was completely burnt up. that shit had blisters and burns and cuts and scrapes. on, like, a physical level i doubt mira was gonna get off from that 💀secondly, the whole "point" in spears mind is to reproduce. like if he can succesfully do that then he has won life. in his hieroglyphics it told us that he felt alone, like he didnt fulfill his purpose in life. and the 1 way that it could be fulfilled was if he could carry on his genes. mira knew that. and as his friend, she knew that was the one way to help her friend. which leads me to my third and final point, the only reason it could even be perceived like she was taking advantage was because of how rushed the episode was. if they had explained it better, spent a little more time actually giving us a damn finale we wouldnt be taken so aback by the sex scene. you could say "oh, but, mira was moaning!" im 100% sure thats cause adultswim cant physically show spears schlong going inside mira's vahayhay yk? anywho, thanks for coming to my 3 am ted talk.
@@trailblazer37 Adult swim showed a dinosaur's cloaca stretching around an egg, I'm sure they can show whatever they want at this point. That sort of animation would gather good money in the niche furry community, lol.
I think everybody is kind of missing the point of Mira having Spear’s baby. A lot of people keep saying that it would have been better if they had gotten together earlier, but the problem with that is I don’t think Mira was interested in Spear romantically at all. I admit that I was weirded out when she climbed on top of him on his deathbed, but she knew he was dying and the only thing she could think to do for him was to keep his bloodline alive. She also did this intentionally, and I think her getting pregnant from them hooking up earlier would have detracted from the fact she was making a sacrifice of her own in this moment. It wasn’t about lust or love, it was about reproduction. He did a lot for her, and that was the only way she could repay him. The fact that she was willing to go through pregnancy and childbirth to keep her friend’s legacy alive is pretty profound too. In a world like Primal’s that focuses primarily on survival in a hostile environment, successfully procreating and leaving something of yourself behind before you go is the ultimate victory. That is what Mira did for Spear, and despite the initial awkwardness, I think it absolutely works as a conclusion for the show.
I think the feelings was there, but the right time was never there, like they had been unwise to try before considering there situation, since a pregnancy would be a large handicap for mira if they had to run for there life or climb, for that mater. I also think they would have taken some time trying to get to know each other properly in a calm environment going on dates and such before getting to that point if what happened had not happened. But yes all in all she did what she did to protect his bloodline no questions there, and it show how much she cared for him.

My boy deserves the best. And I want him to bang a super hot chick on his deathbed!” Writers: “B- But Genndy-“ Genndy: “MAKE IT HAPPEN!”
Some people are confused as to why Spear isn’t wearing his father necklace anymore. My theory is that he probably lost it at some point in his life or maybe even decided to give it up since he lost his tribe and didn’t feel worthy enough to call himself a leader.
The ending hit so hard. Spear had a tribe where he lost his father an assumed his position only to possibly end up as the only survivor along with his wife and children. He loses them similarly to Fang but in the end Fang is at least able to have more. Mira, taken away from her home and people was able to return and even found out her friend survived. Hell even Kamau was able to save his people and daughter. Spear could'nt even live in that village that saved him because of what happened with Fang. He had nothing and Mira understood that.
This reminds me of episode one where spear was powerless to stop his family and fangs babies from being killed. But this time spear had the power to save what he loves in his life. That's what I think spear was thinking
So in the intro, you're gonna show us Fang's baby charging into the water looking like an adorable doofus, and then you show us the title card "PRIMAL" painted in blood with menacing music. Personally, that's comedy.
Remember when spear saved that ape man from the bat creatures? Makes sense why …he came from people that looked like that. Spear was probably a hybrid. Mira wanted spears good genes to live on.
Genndy said that if he gets a third season, it will be about Spear's daughter as an anthology series. He did also say that he didn't really know what else he could do, making it sound like he wanted to move on from the show.
You combined the two things he said into one, he said he wants it to change into a anthology instead and will only use spears daughter if the backlash from not having spear and fang is too massive, so dont hold your breath for his daughter at all
It definitely did feel so rushed. The pacing felt strange and off like they had only a strict amount of episodes for the whole thing other than what they needed. Great episode but I definitely wanted to see more with it. Bit more explanation or backstories. like you said it needed to be two or three like the Colosaeus part to flesh it out.
If I had a nickel for every Genndy show that had a rushed ending, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but I'm also not totally sure if Primal and Samurai Jack were his only shows with rushed endings.
A part of me had hoped Spear and Mira would have had twins, to have one child paired with each of Fang's hatchlings, as well as reflect Spear's earlier children, but there'd likely have been cliché.
Spear is the type of protagonist who is bound to die at one point. And this episode was foreshadowing the whole thing with the paintings on the wall and Spear overlooking Fang with a heavy expression.
I know spear died for a reason but I honestly hate seeing him alive with a smile at one point in the episode then just a burnt zombie with no face features the next few minutes because it’s so sad but the ending was really good anyways
Spear was fierce and i love how they still slipped a little back story and foreshadowing, at first but it was great to see young spear, he fought in a blaze of glory, and go out with a BANG
I was wondering about the hunting flashback from the Mammoth episode. Now that I think about it, I think that was Spear teaching his son how to hunt before the dinosaurs ate him. This flashback in the final episode introduces us to Spear's childhood.
Yeah the last two episodes were such a thud. Probably a side effect of the Discovery (Warner Bros' new owners) cutting and canceling projects left and right for tax write off purposes. Stuff that are current, pretty much anything that was planned, entirely completed projects that were pending release are getting vaulted. Not hard to imagine gendy getting a heads up and told that primal is on its way out so he's going to have to wrap it up quick. Kinda wish there was a law that forced write offs into the public domain. Just rubs me the wrong way that a company can complete forfeit something for a financial break but still gets to keep it.
Yeah I’m sure the whole Warner Bros Discovery thing didn’t help, but I also think Genndy might’ve accidentally set up his series to end shorter than he previously had intended. I felt like meeting Mira and the whole discovering different human civilizations thing felt a little to soon for the stage Primal was in at the time. Felt better suited for season 3 or 4 if you ask me, but I guess Genndy knew the show might not last that long so he set up a major plot twist for season 2 to peak the audience’s interest. But by trying to keep the show different and constantly evolving it with its world building he unintentionally set it up to end sooner than he had expected. Nonetheless I’m still very happy the show was made at all and truly was one of a kind. It was special and had beautiful animation, a good story, and likable characters who barely spoke. THAT’S AMAZING! I just wish we had seen more of it. Nonetheless thank you Genndy for making Primal.
Genndy put out an interview today and he basically very bluntly revealed that he lost interest in the story. There's gonna be a Season 3 because this is an Adult Swim show (not an HBO Max original) and they're obviously gonna order a 3rd season (Primal averages 300k cable views, which is a profit), but it's gonna be an anthology. Genndy lost interest in Spear and Fang and this is one thing that isn't Discovery/Zaslav's fault.
I don't know the full backstory behind the scenes but I totally agree that the ending was rushed and the fact that the episode involving modern humans didn't tie into the series as much as I hoped it would when it first released. Maybe if season 3 does happen that episode will eventually tie in but until then I still really enjoyed season 2 overall.
Even though it really, really, REALLY sucked that Spear died in the end, at least he didn't die in vain. and his legacy will live on through his daughter, so all i can say is Rest In Peace. After everything Spear has done in life, he definitely earned to be with his original family in death. and if Primal ever does return i'm hoping that Spear's daughter will be a new main character, along with Fang's babies!
@@mistersomebody.4724 That fire demon was the foreshadow of spears death. There was no possible way he could've survived that thing. He was either gonna face that or a literal hellish god. So the ending was pretty much expected...
Spear's journey was great, with plenty of emotional discovery and the understanding of what life means, but also he became his own character. I knew that he'd follow in the footsteps of Action Dexter and Samurai Jack, so the direction of his character and the conclusion of his story really made him stand out. The crew worked well on him and gave a warm-hearted send-off. And besides, plot armor had to break at some point. I already was surprised that Fang survived the beat down at the hands of Krog, but a human-furnace not killing Spear, I mean come on!
The reason the Viking loss his powers was because the deal he made was that if he offers his soul to the demon we get the power to get his revenge and since spear was at death’s door demon had no reason to let the Viking keep the power he gave him
@@kangtheconqueror7671 i mean last time we saw kamau was him and his daughter staring at the fire demon while its coming towards their boat pretty sure they died
Honestly my main gripe with this episode is that he didn't get to reunite with his family the way Lula did. He died feeling estranged from other humans and Fang's family- as the last neanderthal (as Gendy remarked in his interview about Primal's "ending")- who could blame him? Family means everything to Spear, and in my heart I'm imagining him appearing in a feild of flowers, looking around confused and calling out for Fang, before suddenly realizing he's not alone. Not anymore. Meeting his wife, kids, and the rest of his tribe in the afterlife, he can finally feel like he belongs. If Primal comes back for season 3 I would love to see more lore on the moon god and Vidarr (the God of Hell), especially with Spear's connection with the moon god. Spear was seen looking up at the moon a lot throughout the episode, joining Mira in a prayer and being transfixed when he saw the dancer. It would be fascinating if the god turned out to be one of rebirth or serenity to parallel the Viking Cheif's (literal) flaming vengeance. Maybe he won't be reborn the same way the Cheif was, but it would be cool if he came back in some way to learn he has a daughter. That his legacy lives on through her.
The isolation was even more sad than the death. I'm surprised they didn't play with that tearing him and fang and the pups away from Mira's peps instead for a full season of sad. damn
The male is definitely his father’s son. Impulsive and willing to jump right in. While the Female is Fang’s daughter. Patient and learns before she acts.
Bro, you literally have 30 seperate comments in this comment section alone, as well as *hundreds* of comments on any given clip of Primal out there on multiple channels. Touch grass.
My theory is the Viking sold his soul to get revenge, the fact that Spear was in the condition he was in the demon/devil (I think it's Aku but that's a whole other thing) had for filed his end of the pact so he snatched that Viking soul.
Spear living for as long as he did after being burnt isn’t too surprising, humans and neanderthals are surprisingly resilient. We can survive anything that isn’t immediately fatal, with modern medicine spear might have recovered.
you would think that but it turns out there's not really much more that we can do in modern days than we could do early days. burns are hard to survive when there life-threatening
@@snowdust5382 with modern medicine he potentially would have had around a 50% chance of surviving. that's assuming it was the burns that killed him, there is the possibility of internal bleeding as well. i'm no doctor but i'd assume he have to be in at least semi decent shape in order to rise to the occasion so to speak...
50 50 would be nice but irl he would be looking at some like miracle of God. see burns lower your body's way to regulate heat, lower your fluids making you dehydrate, greatly increases your risk of infection, and if the burns where breathed in and have burn on the in side and in your air way swelling and blood flow will shortly cut off your air or it's possible and very likely your body will just stop trying to breath. And if all of that is some how worked out recovery of burns that severe would require multiple daily scrubbings and not to mention infection.
What you said about staying for the pets last moment I agree wholeheartedly, it means a lot what you said. I lost my dog a few weeks ago I’ve had him since I was 9 after nearly ten years, the rest of my family didn’t want to be there but I knew that he wanted them to be so I went, I was terrified but relieved
You did the right thing, they family we should be there for them as they are there for us. Such a scaring moment and nobody around you love and care....we shouldn't do this ! I am sorry for your loss,I feel and understand you well.
Seeing spear engulfed in flames fill with such raw rage made me think of kratos from new game: Death can have me, when hes earned me. Sucks seeing him go in a way that did feel rushed, but coming from his background I'd say he was happy in the end. He came from a world where the best u can hope for is to see another sunrise and pass on your genes to a new generation, a world where only the strongest get to do. None were stronger than you Spear R.I.P
I agree with you. The ending was rushed and should've been different episodes. Or at least the episode should've been longer. I don't hate the ending but it does feel like it ended too early. The ending is good, just more things could've been touched on. But even if this is the ending, I'm thankful we got a series like this. It's one of the best I've seen in a long time. But mad respects to Spear man. I had a feeling one of them was going to die in the end but my heart wasn't ready. 😭❤️
I loved it! People keep saying that ending was rushed, but I think it was on purpose. We didn't have time to prepare ourselves for the loss. It was an instant act of sacrifice and it was shocking. I loved it for that. Honestly it's up there with Gladiator and RDR2 for best protagonist deaths.
I wanted Spear to live a long and glorious life because he deserved it. After all the crap he had been through he deserved to live many many MANY years and have several children with Mira and to be happy. But if they were gonna kill him off this way Genndy couldn’t have done it better. He literally fought an actual DEMON and went up against literal hellfire and punched it in the face down a mountain! I mean how much more bada$$ can you die?! And on top of all that he got to get laid by the woman he loved on his deathbed. Genndy’s methods are questionable at times, but at the end of the day he’s one heck of a story teller and knows how to end an awesome character.
"... at the end of the day he’s one heck of a story teller and knows how to end an awesome character." Imagine what he could have done with a PG-13/R rated Hotel Transylvania.
For me Genndy is an amazing storyteller but not a great ending writer, I still don't like Samurai Jack's ending, that one and this one just feel... off to me
What I was hoping would happen is the Viking would attack at night, the people of the village would pray to the moon, and their god would give Spear the power he needs to battle the Viking and win. In my overall opinion, the ending was very good but kind of underwhelming.
I think its really symbolic this episode- you described it when going over his paintings; Mira found her family Fang found their family But he still didn't have one, at least in a literal sense- and felt distant from those he had left due to them finally being at peace with their families. So Mira, as spear is dying, gives him family. A daughter(?), her and his. He might have never got to meet her but in the end Mira made sure that he found family, and left them behind in a safer world.
the primal instinct is the one thing in time that is eternal, to defend or protect, to hunt for sustenance, to copulate, or to feel kinship and love. the primal state is all those things that echo threw eternity.
2:25 the memory you are referring to is when Spear taught his son how to hunt. It was him reliving those memories that drove home his deep pain over losing his children. It also tied into his respect for the prey he has to kill and eat, and how he taught his son to do the same.
they redesigned his son in episode 2 when spear has a flashback to doing shadowpuppets for his kids, and continued to use that design in other flashback episodes
Genndy was asked in an interview about what he has in store in season 3, and whether or not it will focus on Spear's daughter, and this is what he had to say: "I see it ending. [laughs] I don't want to do this story further.
I respect the guy to do as he pleases. Though I hope there will be more prehistoric creatures, maybe more primitive ones would be nice to make it feel more unfamiliar to general audiences
I mean I'm glad that he's open to different things and doesn't want the show to be limited to a specific cast but ending it like this was not the way to go in my opinion.
@@kennethsatria6607 I would be happy to see Spear and Mira's daughter travelling back to the Primal world but I think this concept would be better for season 4 (really far future)
Samurai Jack's rushed ending was also clearly a case of him getting bored and trying to wrap up ASAP. I can't put my faith in a third show of his if there's a chance he'll get bored and give up within three years.
This is the first time we saw Spears father. The scenes earlier were Spear with his children. The “demon” took the Scorpion away because he fulfilled his vengence so now he belongs to the entity.
I felt like this episode was ended to quickly but I'm still sad Spear is gone 🥺 who knows? Maybe there will be a new series with the daughter? I mean the giant demon guy isn't actually dead so maybe he'll show up?
I was really hoping Mira’s moon deity would come in to assist Spear. Rest In Peace. I’m also glad he and Mira finally did the deed. But I would’ve liked if they did that right after he painted the wall and not when he got turned into bacon bits. I’m curious to see what adventures his new child will go on with Red. It’s poetic the first episode ended with him riding Fang and this season ends with his daughter riding one too.
Thing is, she didn’t do it out of romantic love for him. She decided at that moment that she wanted to preserve his legacy. To do it the other night would be strange and sudden. Once she understood his painting, she gave him what he wanted most (out of love and respect for a friend), a family. That might seem weird (especially to modern sensibilities, but remember this is not set in the present), but I truly think that’s what the writers were going for.
@@ebukaobieri I mean out of context it is whack. Women decides to have sex with entirely burnt Caveman that is minutes away from death. But I try to think of the bright side.
It might actually NOT be from problems with WBD, it was before the merger happened.
What did spear say to Mira after they smashed?
“Keep the tip.”
I hope that this is a hidden prequel to the next season because just like primal is, there is always a threat around the corner

If you think about it Fang’s kids are technically the world’s first domesticated dinosaurs

That’s not how domestication works, it’s a process that happens over many generation. Obviously the world of primal isn’t our own, but still
I feel that fang was domesticated first instead of her kids
In defense of Fang bailing, she's a simple creature, she's got those powerful fight or flight instincts. No way to fight her best friend dying, so the only option is to run from the pain.
Spear becoming cheif of his people tells me that him, his wife, and his two children were the only survivors left of his tribe. That just proves how savage his home truly was and also how strong Spear was for being the last survivor of his race and keeping his family safe for as long as he did.
I love how you've commented the same thing twice on two different videos lmao
I can’t imagine the pain he felt watching them die. It’s like a father coming home from work and seeing a robber murder said family.
Yo I love that the story puts the survival of the race as important. I love the concept. Let's all learn from this as an example for our own lives

You don't think these episodes where done before take over in may? Come on man, think a bit before writing an essay.
I think the reason why the demon took back his power was because the viking got his revenge on spear and that ended their deal.
Vidar isnt a demon though
The odd thing about that is that Vidarr took the powers back before he could get revenge on both spear and fang
chieftain got scammed
He's completely alone in a world he made an enemy of.)
So killing fang would be a bonus but spear is the main target.
When Mira got on top of him like that I joked "oh she about to get freaky" and was absolutely mortified when it wasn't a joke :(

Hehe, that just makes me thinking like ruined orgasm... just climax interruptus.
Spear was clearly teaching his son how to hunt in the episode "A Cold Death". I don't get why so many people think that was Spear as a child.
I think it's because in that flashback his son looks bigger than he does in the "outline" we see him as in the pilot episode. In the pilot he looks like 5 years old. In the flashback he looks 9 or 10. But the pilot is like, we don't really see, and seeing your family get eaten might distort your perception.

My headcanon for spear being able to fight the demon dude is that after watching Fang almost die, Spear gained a fraction of power from the demon of Vengance after its flames attached to him. Hence why the viking was suprised
That’s what my boyfriend and I thought as well
I’d think that lessens it. Spear didn’t get any supernatural powers, he did that by being an incredibly strong and endurant warrior willing to die to win. That has its own kind of magic perhaps, but it wasn’t magic borrowed.
I was kind of hoping we’d get to see Fang’s backstory like how she lost her first mate since we saw both Spear and Mira’s backstories.
How many bro

Huh, I was fine until I read this. But yeah Mira's final moment with Spear is akin to how Horus was born.
you voiced my feelings completely when i didn't know how to voice them properly, we wasted so much time on the Egyptians when the 3 parter should've been about the spear, fang, and the viking
Spear is the embodiment of "Man who is literally too angry to die".
At least until he does.
YES! See this is exactly like Samurai Jack where the ending should have had that payoff from the gods set up by the story (this being Mira's moon god) to assist the main character so they can have the well deserved happy ending but Genndy just doesnt go for it
which kinda sucks because it could've worked for both series and their own endings
Nah. They already did that for Samurai Jack
DUDE THATS PERFECT!
I don’t know if cn higher ups would care for religion in their story. Gore is fine but once religion gets in its all out of the table
The worshiping of gods should have been played a bigger role for sure
You made a deal with the proverbial devil, you should know how this works!"
And I think he was so quick to drag him down because he doesn't want too much exposure of his existence, or that of his work.
Personally, I currently think I would have preferred if the scene played out more like this…
After the resurrected chieftain gets his body pummeled and smashed against the mountainside, we would see his body revert back to its original self.
It's kind of a running theme with Gendy's shows at this point. He makes a pretty good show and THEN they rush to the end, when it's in the middle of a good thing.
Has that happened in his other shows? Clone Wars seemed pretty well-paced.
I refuse to believe that this is how the story ends. I'm going to find or write some fanfic and go down an unhealthy path of believing that what I read/write is actually cannon.
why? it was rushed but it was a good ending otherwise.
You probably should never watch Gladiator.
@@changlouriousbasterd9524 the ending makes it even better tbh
And Fang? Not really credible based on her imo.
I kinda like this idea someone gave that Vidarr was simply impressed at Spear's ferocity and will power, and disappointed at the viking for being bested by a mortal man despite all the strength and powers given to him.
@@j.prt.979 I don't think the demon care about fang.
Spear was the main target to kill.
@@j.prt.979 it's probably because he fought with spear mostly and lost to him or that he just sees fang as a regular beast.
The worst part is this is the last time seeing spear and fangs story, unless people really really want more
People definitely want more, but Spear's story is over. I'm afraid they'd kill of Fang defending her kids or Spear's daughter if they kept going. I'm fine getting new characters.
And Big G has said their story is done
We want more for sure
I believe the purpose of the Victorian Era interlude was to set up the idea of the "Primal Self" goes beyond Spear and Fang's story.
So this is really it for Spear and Fang huh. Well it was incredible while it lasted
They need to bring back spear. Have the moon god revive him or heal him back.

That was "Spear" teaching "his son" how to hunt.
Also, I felt Mira and Spear should have had twins. A boy and a girl.
They need an extra Dino for whoever they invite into the family next! Gotta keep the cycle goin'
Hm. Maybe? Didn't consider twins. I think the girl is fine.

this comment is cringe af. the ending was rushed garbage and the "fight" that was built up for 3+ episodes got ended in less than 5 minutes.
@@hplus1 atleast it was better than the dominion fight
😆😆😆
As much as I want a bunch of seasons... If it ends here before it gets ruined, I'm happy about that.
A part of me had hoped Spear and Mira would have had twins, to have one child paired with each of Fang's hatchlings, as well as reflect Spear's earlier children, but there'd likely have been cliché.
hell they could have triplets yet. the show could find a way in the next ep. they won't of course. but it's doable.
Me: There's no way Spear's going to die. He's the protagonist.
Spear: *Dies*
Me: Oh..........FUUUUUUCK!
Spear is the type of protagonist who is bound to die at one point. And this episode was foreshadowing the whole thing with the paintings on the wall and Spear overlooking Fang with a heavy expression.
I know spear died for a reason but I honestly hate seeing him alive with a smile at one point in the episode then just a burnt zombie with no face features the next few minutes because it’s so sad but the ending was really good anyways
they literally said he would die before it even began
Oh fuck indeed 😏
@@blaink8064 true 😉

Exactly
It’s sickening & very frustrating to say the least what they can get away with.
agreed there should definitely be some sort of law or regulation stopping them from doing this
Genndy put out an interview today and he basically very bluntly revealed that he lost interest in the story.
Dang, spear really said “death can wait”

Even though it really, really, REALLY sucked that Spear died in the end, at least he didn't die in vain. and his legacy will live on through his daughter, so all i can say is Rest In Peace.
After everything Spear has done in life, he definitely earned to be with his original family in death. and if Primal ever does return i'm hoping that Spear's daughter will be a new main character, along with Fang's babies!

I'm surprised they didn't play with that tearing him and fang and the pups away from Mira's peps instead for a full season of sad. damn
I honor and respect the dude who continued to fight his best even with 1 arm
Mira: **Shows Spear his new home**

My theory is the Viking sold his soul to get revenge, the fact that Spear was in the condition he was in the demon/devil (I think it's Aku but that's a whole other thing) had for filed his end of the pact so he snatched that Viking soul.
Spear living for as long as he did after being burnt isn’t too surprising, humans and neanderthals are surprisingly resilient. We can survive anything that isn’t immediately fatal, with modern medicine spear might have recovered.
you would think that but it turns out there's not really much more that we can do in modern days than we could do early days. burns are hard to survive when there life-threatening
would he have survived it? yes, he was cooked to Anakin Skywalker term

I mean how much more bada$$ can you die?! And on top of all that he got to get laid by the woman he loved on his deathbed. Genndy’s methods are questionable at times, but at the end of the day he’s one heck of a story teller and knows how to end an awesome character.

That would have been really cool.
Very good? Drink lead.

I think its really symbolic this episode- you described it when going over his paintings;
Mira found her family
Fang found their family
But he still didn't have one, at least in a literal sense- and felt distant from those he had left due to them finally being at peace with their families.
So Mira, as spear is dying, gives him family. A daughter(?), her and his. He might have never got to meet her but in the end Mira made sure that he found family, and left them behind in a safer world.
I really wanted a meaningful goodbye scene between Spear and Fang. Or for the two of them to go out together.
Mira really just like "give me your children"
😂
Well now it's only left to Fang, Mira, Horn & Jaws, and Spear's daughter, and before all of this I thought it was Fang that would die

I was waiting for you to make this video.

Tbh, I would love a anthology series with primary overall style, it’d be a dream come true.
The fact that being burned alive is the most painful thing that can happen to a human being just shows how strong and pain resistant spear is
can we just agree that when spear was burnt to a crisp he was still able to do the deed with mira
Why do you think he's called spear? ;)
@@edykrb1533 💀
Imagine how awesome this finale would be if spear still had the black goop from "Rage of The Ape Men"
This is the first time we saw Spears father.
I’m sad spear is gone too but he’s chillin in Valhalla lol. And the demon Viking is enslaved right now by surtr
Remember the "Primal Theory"? Yea, _THIS_ is what it was foreshadowing...
She did it out of respect.
@@pronoobie5780 I can't be the only one to think that it was whack as hell.
@@ebukaobieri I mean out of context it is whack. Women decides to have sex with entirely burnt Caveman that is minutes away from death. But I try to think of the bright side.
Looks like the Vikings are the only one's with an actual god
