    This video, created by Nucleus Medical Media, shows a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure used to combat coronary artery disease. Beginning with a midline sternal incision, the heart is connected to a perfusion machine which will take over the duties of the heart while the surgery takes place. Two different grafts are used to bypass the blocked coronary arteries: the internal thoracic artery from inside the chest wall, and the saphenous vein from the leg. After the procedure, the heart is shocked to restart its beating. A drainage tube is left at the incision site to drain away excess fluid. The animation continues to show two other types of approaches to a coronary artery bypass graft, off-pump bypass surgery and minimally invasive bypass surgery.
    This is similar to the procedure performed on former president Bill Clinton and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    My father is having this surgery at this moment. I am scared a lot, and keep watching such kind of videos all the time. Surgeons really can make miracles by the help of God.
    Can't keep waiting to go to my dad and see him recovered. God bless all surgeons that save lives

      Maya, how's your son doing now after the surgery? Did he have high cholesterol? I and my boy who is 15 btw have high cholesterol. I'm taking Statin (Lipitor) but since my boy is still young, he is not on any medication. I try to watch his diet... no yolks, animal derivatives such as ghee or butter, no fried stuff, no fast food etc and incorporating lots of vege in the diet, kinda hard to get him to exercise but he says will swim more (Dr says 10 laps a day 2 to 3 times a week is best form of cardio exercise). I am gonna be seeing a Cardiologist next weekend for my case and want to consult him if my son needs to be on Statin for a short period of time till cholesterol level is reduced.

    Ali Saab, Do not worry and make the patient feel worried. Yours and your wifes duty now is to make yourself happy to feel him happy and confortable. I work in a hospital and have seen lots of cases on heart. Nothing to worry. Encourage the patient to eat regular diatory food, exercise and medication. It is in both yours hand to keep him healthy in mind to make things come your way. Cheer up... Things will come your way. God promise. Thanks for listening...Krishna

    @nuttyteacher the internal thoracic artery. the radial artery in your arm and the saphenous vein in your leg are also vessels that are commonly used in bypass surgery. Arteries are preferred though because their walls are thicker much more durable than veins.

I'm in good health as of now but diet control n walking is a must for all! It's almost 3 years n hope to continue for another few years! I have few friends who are still around after 30-35 yrs of byepass surgery! I didn't get to watch before my byepass but was curious to watch as to what the doctors did to my body but its not that painful as made out by all.... yes, its painful in the mind but not physically! Am glad I underwent and am healthy as of now n cautious in my diet!

    ...also, even if they make a graft below the blockage; what happens to the upstream portion above the blockage? Wouldn't it stagnate the blood flow in that portion and cause problems and couldn't the plaque from the blockage still break off and go downstream past the new graft insertion point?

    @GoldKamil I am terribly sorry that you had the misfortune of having these congenital heart defects but I really do think you should learn more about your conditions. I'm surprised to see that you don't seem to be very well informed about your condition and the procedures that have been performed on you so far. For example, it is 'Tetralogy of Fallot' (pronounced fall-o). Please talk to your surgeon and ask him to explain the treatment options- it will help you be more calm and more confident.

    RobertjDuncan1; Like DoradoEl1 said, survival after bypass is huge. My nurses/DR's emphasized to keep positive (I've read depression is very common after surgery). I had one 2mo ago, and I was at home 10-days later (I am 44yrs old). My surgery was "off pump" (beating heart), and I received a quintuple bypass (they used arteries/veins from my leg, forearm, and inside my chest). They saved my Life! My dad had bypass 15yrs ago, & my recovery has been much easier than his was.

    What I don't understand is why a person would need a coronary bypass if they have absolutely no symptoms, no fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath or anything and they feel in perfect health. I have lifted weights all my life and even though I am an old man now, I still do behind the neck triceps extensions with 45 lbs. doing 17 reps and 4 sets, and other exercises in the same way, WITH NO PROBLEMS!!! So how can there be insufficient blood supply 2 the heart muscle,it just doesn't make sense.

    First of all, youtube is not the best forum to ask for expertise opinions (I figure that is what you are after) on bypass surgery.
    Is it recommended? Yes of course it is, the "invention" of bypass surgery was a huge change in medical science.
    It was the first time anybody had succesfully operated on a human heart.
    It saves lives, what more do you want?

    Wait, how do you stop the heart? I thought cardiac muscle can keep depolarizing because it doesn't need the nervous system to contract and relax.

    • @mussekhan2258
      @mussekhan2258 9 років тому +4

      NoobityBoobity You give drugs, also callled cardioplegic solution. Its a mixture of components in this solution, but the most important component of the solution is potassium. You will basically flood the heart with potassium which will freeze the cells in a depolarized state and in this way stop the heart.
