While I don't think it hurt the performance much, mine had a slight gap on the front of the reed due to the plastic being slightly warped in the center front, near the small hole. A combination of sanding it relatively flat and using a larger washer for the reed screw somehow made it seat almost perfectly. The metering lever was also too high, which may have been the main contributor to the fuel shooting from the carb and tuning screws acting strange. It was impossible to kill the engine by leaning out the low speed screw and oil puddled around the exhaust.
I haven't even replaced the metering/pump diaphragms and gaskets yet, and it seems to run good and starts very easily. The 30 year old originals are in good shape, but are pretty stretched and one of the valve flaps made a crack sound when I poked it (before the gas softened it up).

Did you check to see if the duck bill vent in the gas cap? That what usually causes it to push gas back through the carburator. And after running it and get it up to operating temperature shut the saw off and open the gas cap, if its under pressure it will hiss at you or if you remove the fuel line it will spray gas under pressure.

Thanks for the info. The cap actually leaks a little from the valve so there isn’t any back pressure on this saw. But that is really great info to keep in mind.

Set it slightly lean, it will richen up when you put the cover back on due to air restriction from the air filter. These little saws are nice, but suck to set mixture, adjust it perfect, put cover back on, now too rich, now take cover off, readjust, put cover back on, and repeat until right. If you set it perfect with cover off it will be rich every time with cover on, dumbest air filter design ever. This saw, the 2300 and the husky 23 compact are the only saws I have seen where the mixture is set without air going through the air filter.

I have worked on a couple of these. They sprayed as well. On mine they didn't have but one line to the carb for the fuel line. I have never been able to find a replacement carb for these because of the single line. Does anyone have a part number? Thanks!

Mine spits back lots of fuel as well bug i wonder if that is just from aggressive stock porting. These things really rip for such a small engine so that could be it.
I tried flipping and bending the reed and it was almost perfect as far as sealing goes but it still spit fuel out.

Yeah I did another video using it and after a good warm up I was able to really lean it out and it def cut back on the fuel shooting back out. Buy like you said, this just seems to be something these saws do.

@@modest_wrenching I can’t get mine tuned right so going to pressure test the engine and sed if that’s why or maybe the check valve is’t sealing.
      Love these little saw.

Good luck. I have been finding a lot of leaks around the carb gasket for most of my small engines. Hope it is an easy fix!

I think you can but fiberglass reed material and cut your own out

I will have to look into that for the future. I just ran it not too long ago in another video and it idles really well. I guess the little gap isn’t that big of a deal once tuned up correctly. Thanks for the info and I will see about a video in the future on this topic.

Most people have problems with their equipment because they don't read instructions or the manual.
