i very much so enjoyed the sounds of bike maintenance on this guy
thank you 😊
I like how you're not constantly talking through the video ruining the build... Nice work
Thank you!

Just changed my 1999 Marin to one buy, got a hope 32T on a deore hollowtech square taper crank and 11-28 8spd cassette on rear ,at 55 I only cruise down the canal path so I thought I'd go for it ,I love it ,she is so silent and rides like 👍 butter ,I put some insanely beautiful rockshox air forks up front and I love that bike 🚲 🤟💯🇬🇧 Hardtail 4 life 👍🙏💯🇬🇧❤🇺🇲🤠,I think I'm sticking with square taper because shimano BBs are just so smooth strong and fantastic 👏
Love the video. A breakdown of component upgrades would be awesome in the description.
Thank you! Noted! Thanks for letting me know!
Yeah double that
I remember back home with you man!. Clean and happy after build.
Thank you!
You know it would be awesome a short test drive after you do all that work just so the viewer can see how the bike looks from that era
I have a 1998 Lava Dome and need to put a larger range cassette on it. Thanks for the guide! BTW, love that bike even after 20+ years.
Thanks!! It is truly an amazing fun bike that still holds it down today.
please tell me how to install such a large cassette?
Cracking build there buddy👍👌🚲
Thank you!
Pizza looks great on that rear wheel 🤟🤠💯
Tomi is absolutely killing it!
Thanks Joe!
That low gear ⚙ is off the hook RAD 🤟👍
Thanks!
keep going man i hope you will have lots of viewer because you deserve much more i still dont understand why are your videos this much underrated
Thanks man! Share these videos to those who might enjoy it!
@@CowboyTomi i will 🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️
Just found your channel , I love this bike builds vids
Thank you! Many more to come!
Great video, I loved that you let the "maintenance sounds" dictate the video instead of talking the whole time.
Maybe you could have cleaned the bike while disassembling? That bottom bracket could use some attention.
Quick tip: Don't use the rounded hex when undoing a bolt, use the other side it will also give you more leverage.
Yes, thank you for the tip!
Fun to watch. I always take all the parts off and clean the frame before building. The water that came out when you removed the cranks is worrying
Thank you! Yeah the water came from me hosing it down right before taking it apart.
love your builds
thank you!
That drame glows in the drk
the realest cowboy out there!
my other horse is a bicycle 🤠
Bike looks great nice job cheers
thanks! cheers!
Nice build
Thank you!
Good job Tomi good
Thank you pops!!
Fun build!
That thing would really rip with a shorter stem and wider bars
@@raddad8847 Very fun build! And yes, possibly the next upgrade on this thing.
Cool bike 😎
Thank you!
Респект и уважение,тебе Ковбой Томи:)
Thank you! Much love!
Love your videos, new Subscriber 🤘
Thank you!! Cheers!
I'm about to buy a Kona world bike Rasta 3 speed, nexus internal I think it's an 06 07, good commuter, it's in excellent shape, I think it's kinda rare, red letters flat black, I'll prolly put a shorter stem, brake pads, and maybe new chain, I'll do a tune up.
I have a Specialized Hardorck 2010 and the stem looks identical to this one from Kona. No markings on it, it's the original one.
nice! sounds like a fun bike!
How confident are you in that wheelset being set up tubeless? I have a pair of Matrix Singletrack wheels I've been thinking of going tubeless on, but I'm not sure it'll work with the old rims.
I am always somewhat confident in using old rims for tubeless. It definitely helps if its a tubeless tire. However, these were a little difficult because they were not tubeless tires. Just make sure the taping is good and then give it a shot.
First of, I want to say that I love your videos ! Very calming ans satisfying to watch. I have one question on this build, why did you use a derailleur hanger ? Thanks a lot !
Thank you! Good question. I used a hanger because the cassette range was too big for the original derailleur. And the hanger allowed it to shift to the biggest ring without any interference.
Hi Tomi - great channel. Just a question if you have started this bike for bikepacking? If so, do you think the bike to be better suited with a front suspension or rigid fork for bikepacking?
90s Kona's appeared to feature the P2 rigid fork, before the front suspension fork was introduced. Cheers.
Great question! I haven’t gone bikepacking with this one yet, but I know for a fact they’d be great for bikepacking. The fork has enough give to glide thru gravel trails and ride along paved roads with a good rolling speed. I can’t tell you if one is better than the other but I can tell you that you’ll have so much fun no matter which type of bike you choose.
Thank u
Awesome build!! Quick question. Could you have used the old chain bolts or did you choose to buy the new green bolts?
Thanks! No, I couldn't have because they accommodated holding two chainrings instead of only one. So I had to get 1x bolts that were shorter to only hold one chainring.
if only we can order parktools here in the Philippines with less shipping..that would be nice
Go check out RJ the bike guy on UA-cam! He makes his own bike tools and shoes viewers how to make them! Really helpful on anything bike related.
Hello, can you please tell me if I can keep the old connecting rod system? I'll try to clean them well
You have a list of what you placed on your bike and where you got them sir? Thanks
good question, i’ll leave the list of things in the description. thank you!
very good 👌🏽
thank you brother 💗
So when doing this ghetto tubeless, I know its not a tubeless rim but can you set it up with a rigid tyre? Or must the tyre at least be tubeless compatible?
Good question, these non-tubeless tires happened to work on a tubeless set up, but it was tough. I'd say it would have a 50% chance of seating.
Can you post links to the dropout extender?
All you cleaned was the back of the drive crank?
I cleaned everything, I must've not edited it into the video.
Hi, these Trail boss tires are capable of tubeless? I have them on my Lava dome 2021 and was wondering if they can handle it. They are not labeled as tubeless tho...
Very good question, these are not tubeless ready, but I went for a tubeless set up anyway. The tires filled right up and has been sealed without any air leaks. It has kept its psi level for quite some time now since this build was done.
Chain is gona slap like bitch without clutch 😂😂
What is the rear hub and free hub body of the bike you are using?
I believe its an old Shimano Deore
What's the purpose of the extension on the rear derailleur
Great question - Since I installed a bigger cassette (11-46t) on this bike, this Shimano Deore derailleur needed a boost to reach those extra teeth on the big rings.
@@CowboyTomi whats the name/brand of the extension you used?
@@chaneltukuitonga-yandall8909 I forgot what brand it was, you'll find it somewhere on amazon if you look up derailleur hanger
would you ever do a subscribers bike?
Possibly! Maybe at every 100 subscriber, ;)
@@CowboyTomi cool i got a cool bridgestone
nice i did this with my 99 or 2000 idk what year it is.. Cannondale f900, its a 1x and it runs like a champ, also did this to my 92ish specialized rockhopper, i have pics i think on my instagram @el_bastardo
Nice! I'm gonna shoot you a follow! 1x's is the wave!
Pinoy ka ba pre?
Nope! My ethnicity is Cambodian/Burmese.
1x is a downgrade, plus it looks terrible on a classic 26 inch bike. Steel Kona's are awesome bikes otherwise.
I wouldn't call it a downgrade, the gearing ratio still compensates for the original 3X8 it had and it's lighter. The purpose was to make things more simple and actually take it out mountain biking so I was never going to use those two extra rings in the first place. Old Kona's are amazing!
Think I'll get some of those flash anodized crank bolts 🔩
Can you fit 650b/27.5 or 700c wheels on this frame? You think the rear wheel would have enough clearance?
Only 26" can fit this frame! that'll be sweet tho.
