  • Frank Bunge covers how to adjust Avid BB7 disc brakes using a Catrike Road recumbent trike as an example platform. Much of what's covered applies to all disc brakes, so take a look if you're having issues with cable tension, rotor/pad rub, or caliper positioning.
Frank Bunge is head mechanic at RBR ( rbr.info ).

I'm a certified dufus when it comes to things mechanical, but your disc brake adjustment videos got me & my trike through to the other end with applause all around.

It's a shame you have so few subscribers and so little activity, I found this insanely clear instruction, compared to many videos made 5 years later in 2017/18.
I'm using your guidance for my electric scooter, Xiaomi M365, and I feel much more confident now, boosted with your knowledge. Thanks

I highly recommend any serious cyclist learn bike maintenance. There are so many resources available: the Zinn books are excellent and plenty of UA-cam videos. I've found even with these resources I've had to learn a little from trial and error, but once you finally get it, it's so rewarding to be able to tear down a bike to the frame and rebuild it.

I agree, I've built a couple mountain bikes pretty much 100% myself in my garage on a park tool stand. I recently built an older style frame 2007 Ironhorse warrior into what I would consider an updated version of mountain bikes out now. I get so many compliments compared to fellow riders bikes (they all look the same😉), plus pride of putting it together yourself.... priceless.

Thanks dude 👍 I have Avid BB5 disc brakes that rub. I have new rotors, new cable but just can't get that slight rub to go away. I just gotta spend some quality time with it and get it just right. Thanks

6:48 this happened to me but it wasn't the calliper or the pads it was my roter that rubbed my fork. I changed it to an 160 mm and it stopped.

Adjusting the caliper's position by eye is not cool! Tighten the caliper bolts with the brake lever gripped tightly. That holds it way straighter than your eye can see!

Printed instructions for adjusting the brakes are included in every box of Avid BB5 or BB7 brakes. Follow them, not this dude's ”poetry”...
