I never played any MGS but I got this game as an Easter present and I was very impressed. Right after completion I bought the HD collection and I'm very big into MGS now!
Also buy mgs1 on the ps store. You can play it on your PS3 and psp. It's a ps classic. Mgs1 is my favourite mgs game. It's so amazing! It's totally worth it.
All you people directing hate, did you even watch this review at all? Jeremy said you are better off buying the HD collection as it's much longer but still for the same price. Also, he said people who have never played MGS before should get GZ but only on SALE PRICE. So I'm really confused as to what's so bad about this review? I think he did a great job!

I feel like Jeremy should have a separate gaming channel. It seems clear that he wants to keep the focus of this channel on movies which is perfectly fine. I love his movie reviews. Guess I'm not the only MGS newbie who only got interested in that game because of those endless debates about the length of the recent GZ. I've seen gameplay footage which really impressed me so I bought the game for 13€ and I don't regret a single cent I invested for it. That's a short but an amazing experience I would recommend anyone who's into stealth and tactical games. GZ is a great first step into the MGS series for ppl like me who haven't played any of the prodecessors. Thanks to all those haters who brought me to that series! ;-) Now I'm totally lookin forward to the release of PP. Btw, today no one has to pay 20 or 30 bucks for GZ, you can easily get it way cheaper now. So, actually there's no reason for complainin about prices anymore. If you get this game for 15 bucks it will be already totally worth it. So, to all those haters bashin' this game just for its price: Play this game first, now that you can finally afford it, and then you can still bitch about it if you gonna find any other reason for that, which I doubt. In case you won't - don't worry. There are numerous overpriced DLCs with real shitty, hardly mentionable content which ppl willingly pay full prices for and no one of you idiots has ever been heard bitchin and whinin about that before. So how about you finally catchin' up on your duty and raise your voices where it's clearly needed? Otherwise stfu and get lost already.
Dude if your serious about getting into the story of Metal Gear. At least play them all in order of release, OR read up on them. Because I know The Phantom Pain will definitely have reference to all main MGS games including MG, MG2. It will be confusing at first trying to understand the lore. But once you figured it out. it's the best shit ever, and will make The Phantom Pain that much more impactful.
I'm not sure if I agree with Nick H I loved Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 I never had a chance to play 3, didn't have a console when it was released and so much came out by the time it was possible. But I loved 1 & 2. Eventually got to play 4 and after 3 hours I was bored out of my mind things didn't seem explained well, the story made little to no sense and the gameplay just wasn't as fun as the MGS of my youth. Picked up GZ on Steam the other day, holy shit balls it is amazing. One of the best stealth games I have ever played. I'm back in love. I read a lot about 3 & 4 and how it turned off players similar to me, so I'm happy to jump on here and use UA-cam to catch up. I'm not sure 1 & 2 hold up, I personally get upset over archaic game mechanics (dont get me started on Dragon Age Inquisitions glitch jump hopping to get to locations). Anyway just my million cents. Jump on here use UA-cam to catch up, the other MGS are nothing like this, this is an evolved game. But hey if you do try them and enjoy them more power to you, I wish I could go back and play them for the first time, again.
Fair enough. MGS4 story is hard for people to understand because A: It's not well told, the cutscenes drag way to long. and B: MGS4 expects players to have played ALL MGS titles prier to MGS4. It's does make sense in the end. Trust me, The Phantom Pain will be bridging the gap and knowing how Kojma tells his storys, I'm guessing he would expect people to know the lore. It's not the games fault when the "player" has no clue as to what it could be referencing. I see a lot of newcomers going into GZ or TPP. Some reviews bashed GZ for not explaining enough backstory. It's stupied on them for going into the "5th" chapter.
I honestly just don't have the time in my life to go back and play all those games. I don't think it's the game's fault the player might miss something but it's definitely the writer's fault. A good story balances finely between being well told in it's own right and referencing outside of itself for nuance. Anyway, fortunately there is the internet so a quick okay google explain metal gear phantom pain (insert particular topic) to my phone will keep me in the know.
I don't care how much of a fan you are of any game series. You should not be happy about paying $30 for any game this short. We all should expect better.

I hope so. I was lucky enough to only pay $5 for this cause of a coupon and trade ins. I would've felt fucking RIPPED OFF if I paid the full price. I don't how Jeremy can defend this. Yeah MGS2 was one Zone of the Enders but at least ZOE was a self contained full game that you paid for. Ground Zeroes should've been 5-10 bucks max. Contrary to what Jeremy says, DO NOT buy this game. This will only lead to bad decisions from game companies down the road.
Jordon Morgan Gaming companies are going to try this shit regardless of whether or not we buy buy this because they are always thinking up new ways to rape our wallets. I personally think Ground Zeroes costs so much because Phantom Pain is costing Kojima a dickload of money and so he needed some kind of return in order to get the game out within the next year or so. I don't see Kojima as being greedy, but Phantom Pain is a game he said he always wanted to make, and that takes money, which Konami was happy to take a large chunk of so of course they would approve or even push this price.

Edit: The only problem I had with Ground Zeroes is that it relies so much to Phantom Pain but if Phantom Pain becomes longer and better than Ground Zeroes we can look back at Ground Zeroes saying buying both of them are worth it.

I think anyone who buys this should have some sort of exclusive content available to them in the official release of The Phantom Pain, just so that it will still have use after the 2 hours of gameplay.
First batch copies (so pretty much everyone who pre-ordered and bought it in the first week or so) come with a code that gives you exclusive DLC for The Phantom Pain when it comes out.
Also there is save transfer so anyone who has finished GZ gets any additional PoW's the rescue for Outer Heaven + other as of yet unknown bonus for PP.
The story in Ground Zeroes is gut-wrenching and I cannot stress this term enough. My gosh. It is great, and I'm SOOOOO ready for Phantom Pain. MGS3 and this (just in quality per inch I guess) rank above everything in the franchise's lineage. Big Boss's life hits like a bus and I love watching every minute of it.
i was not expecting it to be soooooooooooo dark and the Joan Baez/Morricone really set the tone for it too! the licence for that song was probably why it wasnt just free.
I agree with Jeremy, this was for MGS fans, and c'mon who would buy this as their first Metal Gear game? You're buying a game in the middle of it's story, this is like getting MGS4 then asking questions about who everyone is. This is strictly for fans who knows that they can make 5 missions(6 counting the special one you unlock) feel like a lot of fun. If you're an MGS fan and still whine about a half priced game, you're just making excuses with yourself instead of having fun with the game.

I bought MGSV Ground Zeroes on PS3 for just over £20 and it was definitely worth it. I know that I will be playing the game on a number of different occasions as I know that there is still more to do/explore. I agree with pretty much everything you've said including that the game ended on a cliffhanger that made you want to be able to play more.
You can easily see how brutal it is straight in the M rating "adult content, including graphic gore and references to rape" which left a real bad taste in my mouth after playing it.
I agree about Sutherland's performance as Big Boss. At first I was completely against it, but as Jeremy said it gives Big Boss and Solid Snake a different identity and I gotta say that it left a completely different and good feeling to me.
I can't stop playing this game, its even ripped me away from Dark Souls 2 and that is quite the achivement! I've put in 10 hours so far and gotten 14% completion. I fully agree with Jeremy though, MGS fans should buy this now and you'd totally feel justified in your purchase, it might be a much harder sell to new/or casual fans though.

MGS3 Snake Eater- 1964 Peace Walker- 1974 Ground Zeroes- 1975 Phantom Pain- 1984 MG1- 1995 MG2- 1999 Metal Gear Solid- 2005 MGS2- 2009 MGS4- 2014 This is the time line, and yeah I just typed all that out :-) Solid Snake, Liquid and Solidus were born in 1972, making them 3 years old during Ground Zeroes and 12 in the Phantom Pain. I don't know...$30 seems like a rip-off. The game doesn't take that long to finish (less than 2-3 hours)... I would argue that you would be better off renting it and save some cash. I just hope other companies won't do the same thing in the future...it just seems a ridiculous to pay that much for essentially a DLC/Demo

I'll just say though, I've spent a good 15 hours with the game and I'm only 15% complete according to the games menu, but then again, I'm not actually trying to finish it, I've just been going through the main mission and experimenting by poking and prodding to see what results I get, and THAT, is what Ground Zeroes is all about IMHO. So I've still got a lot left to play in the game but it is the MGS-fans kind of game, I have a hard time recommending it to anyone else.
Of course i got it. I pre-ordered it before i even knew it was this short, but i don't mind. It's still Metal Gear Solid. One of the, if not the greatest video game franchise of all time.

I see most negative comments coming from casual gamers that have never experienced the saga of Metal Gear and its understandable cuz they dont understand what the Metal Gears are supposed to be for,stealth, story and replayability. to the MG fan, like myself 15 years running, this game blows my mind and is worth $30. Hell it could have been $60 and I would have bought it. Top notch graphics to date for 3rd person, gameplay mechanics are tuned to perfection, new elements are an amazing addition and Kefier makes Big Boss, tho I was skeptical at first but after playing he fits the part. The AI is astounding too, they give no mercy this time around. I love the controller layout, way more fluid than previous games. Just the sight of the draw distance in the game is breathtaking. This game is paving the way for the most epic game to come out, The Phantom Pain. Really excited for it now, my experience of this game is on the PS4 where it should be. Wouldn't fell right playing it or any MG on any other system.
This was my first Metal Gear and game and i absolutely loved it !Yes it is 30# for 5 missions but i have already sunk in about 12 hours just running around and exploring the base.doing the missions all the different ways i can...and i am now so excited for Phantom Pain !

Kiefer was brought in because the game was entering the territory and time frame of Big Boss becoming separate in the ways he was similar to Solid Snake because of him aging naturally as a man and not a clone and then he became the villain. They started out similar but in the end the two became very different characters and I think if Solid Snake returns for MGS game remakes or prequels of his untold mission's then (I hope) David Hayter will return for he may have been only 50% Big Boss... but he will always be 100% Solid Snake. And no one else should have the right to step into that role but he, no one should have the right take that away from him!
I agree man. I know Kojima is itchin to remake metal gear 1 and 2 and david most likely will voice act as snake. what I'm wishing for is Solid Snake making a cameo in Phantom Pain since that'll MAYBE put snake at a late teen during that time.
Jeremy I know you are a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series and if you think the price is justifiable then I totally respect that. You should really take this more seriously though and mention just how ridiculous this is. For gamers this is a very bad example for demos. If people keep defending the fact that you are paying $30 for a demo of a game and keep supporting it then you can bet that all other game companies will jump on the wagon and start charging for demos too. If everyone defends this then us as gamers will have to start paying to play demos in the future. This is so obviously a money making scam without a doubt and Konami are praying on their fan base in order to make this sell and the fans will be making the excuses on their behalf. If the fans like this demo then that is fine but we do not want this to be the future of gaming. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker for the PSP had a demo that lasted over an hour and that was free. It is wrong on all levels that they are charging you for this demo. It should have been $5-$10 max but $30 is just ridiculous. In fact I actually heard that the game was originally going to cost $40. So all gamers should really mention how bad this is so that we can prevent this from becoming the common trend in the future.

it took me 72 minutes for the main mission BEST FKING RESCUE MISSION EVER, that shit was tense, only Hideo Kojima can pull something like this off, simply cannot wait for Phantom Pain
I bought this game for $20 a few months ago, and then I bought the mgs hd collection soon after. Ground zeroes single handedly got me interested in the mgs games, and I have an S rank on all but two missions, and have over 20 hours played. Now I can't wait for the phantom pain to come out even more, the waiting is killing me lol
UK price is equivalent to $40. It's way too expensive for the content you get. I'm fine with them releasing something like this, but it's outrageous to charge so much, it should've just been a downloadable for at least half the price.
Dont you get payed more in UK? Thats what I heard. That their minimum wage is about equivalent to 13-15 US dollars. Our minimum wage is about $8, $6 at other places here. By here I mean the US.
Or alternatively this should have either (as he mentioned in the video) been packaged in with The Phantom Pain or better yet should have been released as a demo for free. And yeah, the price of this is ridiculous, but I guess this is how the industry wants to be (as well as how gamers who actually buy and support these kinds of practices want the industry to be).

I actually like how they are going with quality over quantity approach (*cough DNF*). I played it and it's just simply what you wanted in a new MGS game. The graphics, voice acting, gameplay is worth every penny. I love it and I can't wait for Phantom Pain. Even with the huge hype I still think it's what you wanted and I can promise you that you won't be disappointed.
i'm a huge Metal Gear Solid fan and i don't regret buying this game at full price, whatsoever. i got it on PS3 but i'll be getting it on PS4 when i get a PS4. one thing i'm surprised you didn't mention in this review is the collectible XOF patches because i spent hours looking for those
Once again Jeremy you have gotten me to start playing a new franchise, first Mass Effect, now Metal Gear Solid. I watched the movie versions of Metal Gear 1 and 2 and Metal Gear Solid on youtube since all I have is an Xbox 360, and by halfway through Metal Gear 2 I was enthralled in the story. I got the digital version of the HD collection and recently finished Metal Gear Solid 2. I am now playing Snake Eater and loving all of this Metal Gear goodness. Thank you

Oh and while at it we shouldn't forget about DEMOS!! The Mass Effect 3 demo was 2 main missions plus fully working multiplayer which lasted for hours yet you didn't have to pay for it. Honestly haven’t played a Metal Gear game since it was on the first Playstation….bought Ground Zeroes on a whim for my PS3 (though I’ll…honestly buy it again when I get a PS4 so I can have it and Phantom Pain in the best graphics possible). And I’m just absolutely blown away by how fun this game is, how smooth it runs, and have no regrets having paid full price for it.
As much as I love MSG, I think I am going to wait until the price comes down to get this. I just can't justify the price. Games are expensive, they always have been and I don't have a problem with that. Mainly because if I compare it to going watch a movie which is about 2 hours long at £10, for 4 times the price (roughly mind you) normally after doing all the content and any multiplayer and/or side content you would get about 10+ hours of content available to you. Even if I take my time with GZ I would probably get about 3 hours which is £10 an hour, its would be like going to see Wolf of Wall Street for £30. Regardless of how good it may be I just can't bring myself to do it.

i'm a huge MGS fan, i have a solid snake tattoo! not gonna buy this, even fans have a limit. Kojima got my donation for MGS2, and that's it. Looking forward to the main game though. Also, David Hayter should 100% voice both, A: he's always been the voice of both. B: they are the same person, snake is (almost 20 year old spoiler) a clone, I.E. same person, having different voices would be weird... and biggest of all C: you might argue "well, Kojima wants to remake his image" or let's go with the clone-has-a-differnt-voice arguement; do you know who voices big boss in Japan? Akio Ōtsuka, do you know who voices solid snake in japan? Akio Ōtsuka, did they change him out for the new games? no...
Gonna have to argue you on that last part. Solid Snake and Big Boss are not the same person. Solidus was the only genetic identical to Big Boss. Solid and Liquid were not. At the point when old snake and Big Boss had different voices and were genetically around the same age at the time of MGS4; we had to know that Big Boss would switch voice actors at a point.
Well i'm not backing off my arguement, even if they were'nt completely genetically identical in the lore, there's always been a conscious effort to make them look aesthetically identical in previous games, both in looks and sounds, especially the 'grunt'. And I'll still lean on my Akio Ōtsuka arguement and call bullshit. If they really wanted to separate their identities, then they would have done so in Japan too
Jonatas Praxedes You are 100% right...if you are talking about MGS4, Akio is still credited as big boss in Ground zeroes and the phantom pain. And yes, i did get this info from the net ;) Chikao did the big boss voice in 4 because they would be in the same scene and Kojima wanted to separate them so players would more easily distinguish who was talking when the camera was'nt facing them. Your move captain!
***** to counter that, I'd argue that MGSV is the first MGS game to be made in English first and dubbed in Japanese. Therefore, Kojima probably didn't care nearly as much about the Japanese version this time around, so he kept Otsuka on board with the Japanese version. This is accentuated by the fact that Otsuka isn't doing any facial capture; that's all Kiefer. So Kojima doesn't want to spend more than he needs to, basically.
You said it right Jeremy, The Ground Zeroes portion of MGS5 is really for true MGS fans not really the casual gamer. I know I'm not the only one counting down to 2015 when phantom pain comes out.
Even if they did, terms of story is just 10 minutes of story and 5 missions. This is just for the people that cant wait a whole year to play it.I had to skip on Metal Gear solid IV because I didnt own a fucking PS3, so yeah I gotta have my MGS fix.
To be fair you can download it for 20 bucks which is what I did and buy phantom pain on disc to put in my collection. There is a lot more than 2 hours of game play here. It offers at least as much game play time of some of the 15 to 20 dollar psn/xbox live arcade games and is a hell of a lot more polished and fun. But I would agree that this is not where you start if you are just getting into the series.
So excited to play this, preordered it last week and will be picking it up tomorrow after work. Totally agree with jeremy on this, if you had no problems buying the Zone of the Enders game for the MGS2 demo (which was only about 20-30 minutes long) then paying half price for this game which has a campaign of 2 hours plus side missions and online leaderboards to compete with is a pretty sweet deal. And as you said, your not going to get this game anyways if your not a Metal Gear Solid fan.
I am a Huge! Metal Gear Solid fan (MGS 1 being my favourite game of all time) but unfortunately it's been delayed in Australia which really pissed me off. I can't wait to play it but there hasn't been an updated release date :'(
Im relatively new to the series, (MGS 4 being my very first MGS game) and I am Highly enjoying Ground Zeroes on the PS4. After beating the Main Mission and The Side Missions, it makes me want to replay them to see if I could get a Higher Rank. And the Stealth is SO satisfying. Now im very excited for the Phantom Pain to release and I know im going to be playing that game for a Very long time.
I remember when I was a kid, I played MGS1 for the very first time and I always used to strangle the guard at the beginning and get spotted, after this I would dive into the water and then strangle the other guard. I used to repeat this so many times because when your a kid you don't really know what to do in games so I literally mastered the first few minutes of the game. As I grew up with the Metal Gear franchise I used to buy them at the midnight release because the games were just so fascinating and mind blowing. I am now 17 years old and still play metal gear.
I bought it on the PS3. I was debating whether to get it digitally to save me 10 bucks but I would prefer a physical copy and I don't have much memory on my ps3 lol. I want to get a ps4 for Phantom Pain and I would buy Ground Zeroes again for the ps4
Everyone hates on this game for having to pay for it. But when you look back now, FUCK it was a beautiful looking game, so understated in every way. So little dialogue, such a tense environment, such AMAZING mind blowing graphics, THE REAL BIG BOSS being a f*cking badass. You can say what you like, but that intro scene from the point where you see big boss scaling the cliff wit no roped, when he first comes into view and you hear that "DUN DUN DUN DUNDUNDUN" Still gives me shivers now when i see it. Then him sitting up and saying "Kept you waiting huh" is literally one of the most memorable pieces of the entire franchise for me (up there with Boss's fight with Big boss at the end of 3 in the flower field) and boss's CQC badassness vs the ocelot unit in 3. Also Solid's badassness in CQC when he infiltrates Eva's base in eastern europe, how he just throws bitches around the place with the apple rolling along the floor.
I paid $15 for Don't Starve on Steam and got 20 hours out of it. I got Skyrim for $60 but got... 323 hours of entertainment out of it. I paid $20 for Metro 2033 and got 40 hours out of it. You paid $30 for 2 hours... I'm glad you enjoyed it though. XD
I'm new to MGS and I didn't regret buying $30 for this game. It actually got me interested into this series and when I got pre-ordered Phantom Pain and got it, it blew me away. Now I know I'm in for one hell of a ride for past 5 games before. (7 if you count Metal Gear 1 and 2: Solid Snake)
Metal Gear Solid 1 was my first video game ever. I knew going in Ground Zeroes wasn't much but I didn't really hesitate to buy it because Metal Gear as a franchise means quite a bit to me. I haven't played it yet, but I can't wait!
Didn't have a PS4 when it came out so I got it for 360 and it still looked and played phenomenally. Just got a PS4 last week, so I'm gonna turn in my copy of GZ and pay the difference for the PS4 version. So technically, I'll have spent $45 on this demo. WORTH IT

Jamie Rothwell You seriously think with this name and picture I'm not buying the game of course I'm buying it. I just hate micro transactions because usually the company just uses it as a way to hold out content and suck the money out of you after you spent 60$ on a game.
I get that the initial length of the game's main mission is off putting to some, but I personally feel that £20 for something like this is okay, I've heard that the main mission takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours for an average player, combine that with unlocks, trials, easter eggs/secrets, 5 additional ops (4 and one console exclusive op), an open world, numerous game play choices, good voice acting and graphics/art direction and I'd say it's worth it. I know that some random guy on the internet completed the main mission in 10 minutes (after playing it for awhile before) but lets be honest people used to pay more for about as much, plenty of games used to be sold for £40 and they could be beaten in about as much time, oh and Journey was 2 hours long and cost about £15 and that had no additional content but I still loved that game to pieces. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that value is subjective.

I felt Sutherland was lazy in Ground Zeroes. Emotionless, and people were saying Sutherland would add more emotion to the character. I feel he failed. He sounded bored, and uninterested in Ground Zeroes, and the ending sounded extremely forced...
I mean there really wasn't a lot going on to see him get real emotional,it's just the prologue. But I personally think he should be big boss for all future installments. He's a great actor,in the red band trailer for phantom pain you can hear him give a lot more emotion so I wouldn't judge him just yet but so far for me he's bad ass!
That's a little unfair. Big Boss is a trained soldier who already had to kill the only woman he ever loved. Why would he be emotional at all especially on a mission to rescue a enemy spy just to interrogate her? Honestly, there's no reason to assume that Big Boss wasn't bored on the mission given how routinely he and Kaz talked about it before hand. I will admit his voice did take some getting used to.
That's a very unpopular opinion you have, but still your opinion nonetheless. Although if you think about it, it could have been much worse. The alternative would have been David Hayter and he can't act worth a damn anymore. In PW, his voice was so unrealistic and exaggerated that it sounded like he's acting in a cartoon. Hayter's lackluster acting and ridiculous Old Snake voice might have been tolerable in a comic styled game such as PW, but it just doesn't fit the dark and serious tone of MGSV. And I don't see how Sutherland sounded "bored and uninterested" either. His acting skills was just as superb as it was in 24. He did play a character who's a former special forces/counter terrorist agent for 8 seasons you know.
Nelson W. Personally, I see no issue whatsoever with David's Hayter's voice acting. It's not tier one, grade A voice acting but he delivers where it counts and he's pretty good as Solid Snake. The thing is we all knew that Big Boss's voice would have to change, and I think that Kojima may be setting us all up for a Metal Gear remake (an actual remake not the fan-made one) and perhaps we can have David Hayter as Snake and Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss.
I dont get why people dislike this, I am a bit of a fan of the mgs series I played peace walker, mgs 4 and portable ops and a bit of the first one but i liked ground zeroes the most, I did not regret for a moment that I bought it
I think what really bugs me is that this sends the message to developers that if your fan-base is big enough, you can get away with charging full-price for a one-level prologue. At least with the Z.O.E.+MSG2-Demo you got an actual full game for your money.

1: ZOE was not about the MGS 2 demo. You also got a whole game that is actually pretty interesting story-wise. 2: As a long-time gamer, we used to get whole 3rds of games for free or the price of a disc/packaging/stocking (about $5, DOOM being prime example). 3: the only justification for the price of this 'demo' is if the full game is only two levels long, or it costs ~$600.
I really need to buy the Hd collection. Only Metal Gear game I've played was Rising and that was GLORIOUS, except for the stealth sections which is kinda ironic when you think about it, and I know that Rising is nothing like previous Metal Gear games but this franchise has always looked awesome to me.

Been a long time MGS fan. I have all the games.. Even duplicates on different systems. For this game I even bought both PS3 and PS4. Call me fan boy, but it's one of the best game series out there with a cinematic experience that can't be easily matched.

I got it on PS3 since I don't have a PS4 yet and I don't regret any penny. It is awesome, specially for a long time fan. I do hope this prologue does come packed with Phantom Pain so I can experience it again in its full glory.

I was pretty skeptical about Sutherland at first, but Big Boss does need that distinction from Solid Snake. We also know that The Phantom Pain will see Big Boss going down a dark path that inevitably leads to him becoming Solid Snake's enemy. Hopefully he'll be able to portray that well in TPP. Will be interesting to see if the original Metal Gear games get remade into next gen games, as most people, unless they have the HD collection will never have played them or be aware of the story. If this happens it could see David Hayter returning as Solid Snake, while Kiefer Sutherland plays Big Boss, which would hopefully make an excellent contrast to highlight that they are different characters. As for Ground Zeroes itself, I loved it, and despite finishing all the missions fairly quick, I still play it a lot. All the missions have a variety of approaches and the achievements (I have it on Xbox 360, not sure if the Playstation trophies are the same) make for some good challenges. Yes, it is short and yes it is expensive, but it is a game for the fans, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone new to the series as an entry point, the (little bit of) story won't make a whole lot of sense, like Jeremy said, get the HD collection instead, or if you're on PS3 and have a bit of extra cash; the Legacy Collection.

This was free on Xbox Live, so I decided to get it, and it really got me interested in Metal Gear, I have Snake Eater arriving soon, and I'll get Phantom Pain once I have enough money. The gameplay in this is great, and while it is very short I keep replaying missions to see what new ways I can complete the objective and to top my last score. I don't think I would have paid more than £10 for it, but what is on offer here is pretty great.
I never played any MGS but I got this game as an Easter present and I was very impressed. Right after completion I bought the HD collection and I'm very big into MGS now!

Guess I'm not the only MGS newbie who only got interested in that game because of those endless debates about the length of the recent GZ. I've seen gameplay footage which really impressed me so I bought the game for 13€ and I don't regret a single cent I invested for it. That's a short but an amazing experience I would recommend anyone who's into stealth and tactical games. GZ is a great first step into the MGS series for ppl like me who haven't played any of the prodecessors. Thanks to all those haters who brought me to that series! ;-) Now I'm totally lookin forward to the release of PP.
Btw, today no one has to pay 20 or 30 bucks for GZ, you can easily get it way cheaper now. So, actually there's no reason for complainin about prices anymore. If you get this game for 15 bucks it will be already totally worth it.

Dude if your serious about getting into the story of Metal Gear. At least play them all in order of release, OR read up on them. Because I know The Phantom Pain will definitely have reference to all main MGS games including MG, MG2.
It will be confusing at first trying to understand the lore. But once you figured it out. it's the best shit ever, and will make The Phantom Pain that much more impactful.
I'm not sure if I agree with Nick H I loved Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 I never had a chance to play 3, didn't have a console when it was released and so much came out by the time it was possible. But I loved 1 & 2. Eventually got to play 4 and after 3 hours I was bored out of my mind things didn't seem explained well, the story made little to no sense and the gameplay just wasn't as fun as the MGS of my youth. Picked up GZ on Steam the other day, holy shit balls it is amazing. One of the best stealth games I have ever played. I'm back in love.
I read a lot about 3 & 4 and how it turned off players similar to me, so I'm happy to jump on here and use UA-cam to catch up. I'm not sure 1 & 2 hold up, I personally get upset over archaic game mechanics (dont get me started on Dragon Age Inquisitions glitch jump hopping to get to locations).
Anyway just my million cents. Jump on here use UA-cam to catch up, the other MGS are nothing like this, this is an evolved game. But hey if you do try them and enjoy them more power to you, I wish I could go back and play them for the first time, again.
Fair enough. MGS4 story is hard for people to understand because A: It's not well told, the cutscenes drag way to long. and B: MGS4 expects players to have played ALL MGS titles prier to MGS4. It's does make sense in the end. Trust me, The Phantom Pain will be bridging the gap and knowing how Kojma tells his storys, I'm guessing he would expect people to know the lore. It's not the games fault when the "player" has no clue as to what it could be referencing.
I see a lot of newcomers going into GZ or TPP. Some reviews bashed GZ for not explaining enough backstory. It's stupied on them for going into the "5th" chapter.
I honestly just don't have the time in my life to go back and play all those games. I don't think it's the game's fault the player might miss something but it's definitely the writer's fault. A good story balances finely between being well told in it's own right and referencing outside of itself for nuance. Anyway, fortunately there is the internet so a quick okay google explain metal gear phantom pain (insert particular topic) to my phone will keep me in the know.

Yeah MGS2 was one Zone of the Enders but at least ZOE was a self contained full game that you paid for. Ground Zeroes should've been 5-10 bucks max. Jordon Morgan Gaming companies are going to try this shit regardless of whether or not we buy buy this because they are always thinking up new ways to rape our wallets. I personally think Ground Zeroes costs so much because Phantom Pain is costing Kojima a dickload of money and so he needed some kind of return in order to get the game out within the next year or so. I don't see Kojima as being greedy, but Phantom Pain is a game he said he always wanted to make, and that takes money, which Konami was happy to take a large chunk of so of course they would approve or even push this price.

I think anyone who buys this should have some sort of exclusive content available to them in the official release of The Phantom Pain, just so that it will still have use after the 2 hours of gameplay.
First batch copies (so pretty much everyone who pre-ordered and bought it in the first week or so) come with a code that gives you exclusive DLC for The Phantom Pain when it comes out.
Also there is save transfer so anyone who has finished GZ gets any additional PoW's the rescue for Outer Heaven + other as of yet unknown bonus for PP.

The story in Ground Zeroes is gut-wrenching and I cannot stress this term enough. My gosh. It is great, and I'm SOOOOO ready for Phantom Pain.
MGS3 and this (just in quality per inch I guess) rank above everything in the franchise's lineage. Big Boss's life hits like a bus and I love watching every minute of it.
i was not expecting it to be soooooooooooo dark and the Joan Baez/Morricone really set the tone for it too! the licence for that song was probably why it wasnt just free.

I agree with Jeremy, this was for MGS fans, and c'mon who would buy this as their first Metal Gear game? You're buying a game in the middle of it's story, this is like getting MGS4 then asking questions about who everyone is. This is strictly for fans who knows that they can make 5 missions(6 counting the special one you unlock) feel like a lot of fun.

I bought MGSV Ground Zeroes on PS3 for just over £20 and it was definitely worth it. I know that I will be playing the game on a number of different occasions as I know that there is still more to do/explore. I agree with pretty much everything you've said including that the game ended on a cliffhanger that made you want to be able to play more.

You can easily see how brutal it is straight in the M rating "adult content, including graphic gore and references to rape" which left a real bad taste in my mouth after playing it.
I agree about Sutherland's performance as Big Boss. At first I was completely against it, but as Jeremy said it gives Big Boss and Solid Snake a different identity and I gotta say that it left a completely different and good feeling to me.
I can't stop playing this game, its even ripped me away from Dark Souls 2 and that is quite the achivement! I've put in 10 hours so far and gotten 14% completion.
I fully agree with Jeremy though, MGS fans should buy this now and you'd totally feel justified in your purchase, it might be a much harder sell to new/or casual fans though.

I don't know...$30 seems like a rip-off. The game doesn't take that long to finish (less than 2-3 hours)... I would argue that you would be better off renting it and save some cash. I just hope other companies won't do the same thing in the future...it just seems a ridiculous to pay that much for essentially a DLC/Demo

I'll just say though, I've spent a good 15 hours with the game and I'm only 15% complete according to the games menu, but then again, I'm not actually trying to finish it, I've just been going through the main mission and experimenting by poking and prodding to see what results I get, and THAT, is what Ground Zeroes is all about IMHO.
So I've still got a lot left to play in the game but it is the MGS-fans kind of game, I have a hard time recommending it to anyone else.

I see most negative comments coming from casual gamers that have never experienced the saga of Metal Gear and its understandable cuz they dont understand what the Metal Gears are supposed to be for,stealth, story and replayability. to the MG fan, like myself 15 years running, this game blows my mind and is worth $30. Hell it could have been $60 and I would have bought it.
Top notch graphics to date for 3rd person, gameplay mechanics are tuned to perfection, new elements are an amazing addition and Kefier makes Big Boss, tho I was skeptical at first but after playing he fits the part. The AI is astounding too, they give no mercy this time around. I love the controller layout, way more fluid than previous games. Just the sight of the draw distance in the game is breathtaking. This game is paving the way for the most epic game to come out, The Phantom Pain. Really excited for it now, my experience of this game is on the PS4 where it should be. Wouldn't fell right playing it or any MG on any other system.

This was my first Metal Gear and game and i absolutely loved it !Yes it is 30# for 5 missions but i have already sunk in about 12 hours just running around and exploring the base.doing the missions all the different ways i can...and i am now so excited for Phantom Pain !

Kiefer was brought in because the game was entering the territory and time frame of Big Boss becoming separate in the ways he was similar to Solid Snake because of him aging naturally as a man and not a clone and then he became the villain. They started out similar but in the end the two became very different characters and I think if Solid Snake returns for MGS game remakes or prequels of his untold mission's then (I hope) David Hayter will return for he may have been only 50% Big Boss... but he will always be 100% Solid Snake. And no one else should have the right to step into that role but he, no one should have the right take that away from him!

Jeremy I know you are a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series and if you think the price is justifiable then I totally respect that. You should really take this more seriously though and mention just how ridiculous this is. For gamers this is a very bad example for demos. If people keep defending the fact that you are paying $30 for a demo of a game and keep supporting it then you can bet that all other game companies will jump on the wagon and start charging for demos too.
If everyone defends this then us as gamers will have to start paying to play demos in the future. This is so obviously a money making scam without a doubt and Konami are praying on their fan base in order to make this sell and the fans will be making the excuses on their behalf.
If the fans like this demo then that is fine but we do not want this to be the future of gaming. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker for the PSP had a demo that lasted over an hour and that was free. It is wrong on all levels that they are charging you for this demo. It should have been $5-$10 max but $30 is just ridiculous. In fact I actually heard that the game was originally going to cost $40.
So all gamers should really mention how bad this is so that we can prevent this from becoming the common trend in the future.

I bought this game for $20 a few months ago, and then I bought the mgs hd collection soon after. Ground zeroes single handedly got me interested in the mgs games, and I have an S rank on all but two missions, and have over 20 hours played. Now I can't wait for the phantom pain to come out even more, the waiting is killing me lol

I actually like how they are going with quality over quantity approach (*cough DNF*). I played it and it's just simply what you wanted in a new MGS game. The graphics, voice acting, gameplay is worth every penny. I love it and I can't wait for Phantom Pain. Even with the huge hype I still think it's what you wanted and I can promise you that you won't be disappointed.

Once again Jeremy you have gotten me to start playing a new franchise, first Mass Effect, now Metal Gear Solid. I watched the movie versions of Metal Gear 1 and 2 and Metal Gear Solid on youtube since all I have is an Xbox 360, and by halfway through Metal Gear 2 I was enthralled in the story. I got the digital version of the HD collection and recently finished Metal Gear Solid 2. I am now playing Snake Eater and loving all of this Metal Gear goodness. Thank you

Honestly haven’t played a Metal Gear game since it was on the first Playstation….bought Ground Zeroes on a whim for my PS3 (though I’ll…honestly buy it again when I get a PS4 so I can have it and Phantom Pain in the best graphics possible). And I’m just absolutely blown away by how fun this game is, how smooth it runs, and have no regrets having paid full price for it.
As much as I love MSG, I think I am going to wait until the price comes down to get this. I just can't justify the price. Games are expensive, they always have been and I don't have a problem with that. Mainly because if I compare it to going watch a movie which is about 2 hours long at £10, for 4 times the price (roughly mind you) normally after doing all the content and any multiplayer and/or side content you would get about 10+ hours of content available to you. Even if I take my time with GZ I would probably get about 3 hours which is £10 an hour, its would be like going to see Wolf of Wall Street for £30. Regardless of how good it may be I just can't bring myself to do it.

i'm a huge MGS fan, i have a solid snake tattoo! not gonna buy this, even fans have a limit. Kojima got my donation for MGS2, and that's it. Looking forward to the main game though. Also, David Hayter should 100% voice both, A: he's always been the voice of both. B: they are the same person, snake is (almost 20 year old spoiler) a clone, I.E. same person, having different voices would be weird... and biggest of all C: you might argue "well, Kojima wants to remake his image" or let's go with the clone-has-a-differnt-voice arguement; do you know who voices big boss in Japan? Akio Ōtsuka, do you know who voices solid snake in japan? Akio Ōtsuka, did they change him out for the new games? no...
Gonna have to argue you on that last part. Solid Snake and Big Boss are not the same person. Solidus was the only genetic identical to Big Boss. Solid and Liquid were not. At the point when old snake and Big Boss had different voices and were genetically around the same age at the time of MGS4; we had to know that Big Boss would switch voice actors at a point.
Well i'm not backing off my arguement, even if they were'nt completely genetically identical in the lore, there's always been a conscious effort to make them look aesthetically identical in previous games, both in looks and sounds, especially the 'grunt'. And I'll still lean on my Akio Ōtsuka arguement and call bullshit. If they really wanted to separate their identities, then they would have done so in Japan too

And yes, i did get this info from the net ;) Chikao did the big boss voice in 4 because they would be in the same scene and Kojima wanted to separate them so players would more easily distinguish who was talking when the camera was'nt facing them. ***** to counter that, I'd argue that MGSV is the first MGS game to be made in English first and dubbed in Japanese. Therefore, Kojima probably didn't care nearly as much about the Japanese version this time around, so he kept Otsuka on board with the Japanese version. This is accentuated by the fact that Otsuka isn't doing any facial capture; that's all Kiefer. So Kojima doesn't want to spend more than he needs to, basically.

Even if they did, terms of story is just 10 minutes of story and 5 missions. This is just for the people that cant wait a whole year to play it.I had to skip on Metal Gear solid IV because I didnt own a fucking PS3, so yeah I gotta have my MGS fix.
To be fair you can download it for 20 bucks which is what I did and buy phantom pain on disc to put in my collection. There is a lot more than 2 hours of game play here. It offers at least as much game play time of some of the 15 to 20 dollar psn/xbox live arcade games and is a hell of a lot more polished and fun. But I would agree that this is not where you start if you are just getting into the series.

So excited to play this, preordered it last week and will be picking it up tomorrow after work. Totally agree with jeremy on this, if you had no problems buying the Zone of the Enders game for the MGS2 demo (which was only about 20-30 minutes long) then paying half price for this game which has a campaign of 2 hours plus side missions and online leaderboards to compete with is a pretty sweet deal. And as you said, your not going to get this game anyways if your not a Metal Gear Solid fan.

Im relatively new to the series, (MGS 4 being my very first MGS game) and I am Highly enjoying Ground Zeroes on the PS4. After beating the Main Mission and The Side Missions, it makes me want to replay them to see if I could get a Higher Rank. And the Stealth is SO satisfying. Now im very excited for the Phantom Pain to release and I know im going to be playing that game for a Very long time.

I remember when I was a kid, I played MGS1 for the very first time and I always used to strangle the guard at the beginning and get spotted, after this I would dive into the water and then strangle the other guard. I used to repeat this so many times because when your a kid you don't really know what to do in games so I literally mastered the first few minutes of the game. As I grew up with the Metal Gear franchise I used to buy them at the midnight release because the games were just so fascinating and mind blowing. I am now 17 years old and still play metal gear.

Everyone hates on this game for having to pay for it. But when you look back now, FUCK it was a beautiful looking game, so understated in every way. So little dialogue, such a tense environment, such AMAZING mind blowing graphics, THE REAL BIG BOSS being a f*cking badass. You can say what you like, but that intro scene from the point where you see big boss scaling the cliff wit no roped, when he first comes into view and you hear that "DUN DUN DUN DUNDUNDUN" Still gives me shivers now when i see it. Then him sitting up and saying "Kept you waiting huh" is literally one of the most memorable pieces of the entire franchise for me (up there with Boss's fight with Big boss at the end of 3 in the flower field) and boss's CQC badassness vs the ocelot unit in 3. Also Solid's badassness in CQC when he infiltrates Eva's base in eastern europe, how he just throws bitches around the place with the apple rolling along the floor.

Metal Gear Solid 1 was my first video game ever. I knew going in Ground Zeroes wasn't much but I didn't really hesitate to buy it because Metal Gear as a franchise means quite a bit to me. I haven't played it yet, but I can't wait!

Jamie Rothwell You seriously think with this name and picture I'm not buying the game of course I'm buying it. I just hate micro transactions because usually the company just uses it as a way to hold out content and suck the money out of you after you spent 60$ on a game.
I get that the initial length of the game's main mission is off putting to some, but I personally feel that £20 for something like this is okay, I've heard that the main mission takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours for an average player, combine that with unlocks, trials, easter eggs/secrets, 5 additional ops (4 and one console exclusive op), an open world, numerous game play choices, good voice acting and graphics/art direction and I'd say it's worth it. I know that some random guy on the internet completed the main mission in 10 minutes (after playing it for awhile before) but lets be honest people used to pay more for about as much, plenty of games used to be sold for £40 and they could be beaten in about as much time, oh and Journey was 2 hours long and cost about £15 and that had no additional content but I still loved that game to pieces. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that value is subjective.

I bought Zone of the Enders for MGS 2 didn't touch ZotE till about a month later and absolutely loved it.
They also put "Deja Vu" mission in the game when you collect all 9 XSF patches. The mission is MGS1, you reenact key scene with original 1998 graphics, genome soldiers and MGS1 snake skin and face you unlock too.
I actually like ZOE and I'm really on the fence about getting this game.

I felt Sutherland was lazy in Ground Zeroes. Emotionless, and people were saying Sutherland would add more emotion to the character. I feel he failed. He sounded bored, and uninterested in Ground Zeroes, and the ending sounded extremely forced...
I mean there really wasn't a lot going on to see him get real emotional,it's just the prologue. But I personally think he should be big boss for all future installments. He's a great actor,in the red band trailer for phantom pain you can hear him give a lot more emotion so I wouldn't judge him just yet but so far for me he's bad ass!
That's a little unfair. Big Boss is a trained soldier who already had to kill the only woman he ever loved. Why would he be emotional at all especially on a mission to rescue a enemy spy just to interrogate her? Honestly, there's no reason to assume that Big Boss wasn't bored on the mission given how routinely he and Kaz talked about it before hand. I will admit his voice did take some getting used to.
That's a very unpopular opinion you have, but still your opinion nonetheless. Although if you think about it, it could have been much worse. The alternative would have been David Hayter and he can't act worth a damn anymore. In PW, his voice was so unrealistic and exaggerated that it sounded like he's acting in a cartoon. Hayter's lackluster acting and ridiculous Old Snake voice might have been tolerable in a comic styled game such as PW, but it just doesn't fit the dark and serious tone of MGSV. And I don't see how Sutherland sounded "bored and uninterested" either. His acting skills was just as superb as it was in 24. He did play a character who's a former special forces/counter terrorist agent for 8 seasons you know.

Personally, I see no issue whatsoever with David's Hayter's voice acting. It's not tier one, grade A voice acting but he delivers where it counts and he's pretty good as Solid Snake.
The thing is we all knew that Big Boss's voice would have to change, and I think that Kojima may be setting us all up for a Metal Gear remake (an actual remake not the fan-made one) and perhaps we can have David Hayter as Snake and Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss.

1: ZOE was not about the MGS 2 demo. You also got a whole game that is actually pretty interesting story-wise. 2: As a long-time gamer, we used to get whole 3rds of games for free or the price of a disc/packaging/stocking (about $5, DOOM being prime example). 3: the only justification for the price of this 'demo' is if the full game is only two levels long, or it costs ~$600.

Been a long time MGS fan. I have all the games.. Even duplicates on different systems. For this game I even bought both PS3 and PS4. Call me fan boy, but it's one of the best game series out there with a cinematic experience that can't be easily matched.

I was pretty skeptical about Sutherland at first, but Big Boss does need that distinction from Solid Snake. We also know that The Phantom Pain will see Big Boss going down a dark path that inevitably leads to him becoming Solid Snake's enemy. Hopefully he'll be able to portray that well in TPP. Will be interesting to see if the original Metal Gear games get remade into next gen games, as most people, unless they have the HD collection will never have played them or be aware of the story. If this happens it could see David Hayter returning as Solid Snake, while Kiefer Sutherland plays Big Boss, which would hopefully make an excellent contrast to highlight that they are different characters.
As for Ground Zeroes itself, I loved it, and despite finishing all the missions fairly quick, I still play it a lot. All the missions have a variety of approaches and the achievements (I have it on Xbox 360, not sure if the Playstation trophies are the same) make for some good challenges. Yes, it is short and yes it is expensive, but it is a game for the fans, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone new to the series as an entry point, the (little bit of) story won't make a whole lot of sense, like Jeremy said, get the HD collection instead, or if you're on PS3 and have a bit of extra cash; the Legacy Collection.
This is a dope ass game and millenia better than the garbage on the scene today. It's a great value at $30.
Just finished the main mission on ps4. The graphics are amazing. Agree with Jeremy Keither sutherland makes big boss his own. Must buy if your an mgs fan, u won't regret it.
i agree if ps4 have the phantom pain only then am fine with it but there is a lot of other games coming like the new arkham game and the new uncharted so yeah everyone should probably get a ps4 .

***** Actually I have played and own all of the Kingdom Hearts games and I fully intend on playing it on the Xbox 360 or One depending on which I'll have at the time. Why? The system you play a game on doesn't matter. Kingdom Hearts has shown not every huge franchise has to be one console exclusive and honestly the whole console war thing is bullshit. IDC if you play Playstation or Xbox or Wii or PC, I play games to play the game and be part of that community, not for the console.

Where are all the complaints about Ghosts and MW3 pitiful 3 hour campaign? And don't give me bull about Multiplayer because that's even worse, £55 for a MP game. CoD had awesome campaigns, what went wrong?
60 bucks for a MP game is justified. Some people get 100s of hours out of the MP.10 min - 1 hour is not fucking okay for 30 bucks... I loved the CoD4 campaign, but they're still MP focused games.

They have the cheek to charge you £60 for a MP game and then take the piss by charging you for extra weapons and maps, and there not all new, they take the piss out you futher by recycling old maps. So the online MP game is gonna cost £100 or more. And people really complain about a £25 for around 6 to 10 hours of gameplay in GZ.

You think they're gonna change up what works? They're still getting money for it. Its the gamers fault for falling into it. They ain't gonna change it because the gaming community buys into the same crap every time. And they still get their money. And millions of fans are happy with the multiplayer. Their actions are justified by the money they desire, and they get that money from us. So its the people's fault, not the developers fault.
Yeah like Titanfall. Only MP game and full $60. And it has way less content than MW3 and Ghosts.

I would never pay £60 for an only online game. I got lucky with Titanfall. I got it for £26 from amazon.
This was free on Xbox Live, so I decided to get it, and it really got me interested in Metal Gear, I have Snake Eater arriving soon, and I'll get Phantom Pain once I have enough money. The gameplay in this is great, and while it is very short I keep replaying missions to see what new ways I can complete the objective and to top my last score.
I don't think I would have paid more than £10 for it, but what is on offer here is pretty great.
