Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. Seki-sensei's words remind me that medieval European swordsmanship, one test was to defend yourself against a comletely untrained attacker, because they attack recklessly and unpredictably.
It’s quite reassuring to hear even a swordsmaster and his previous master say that “self defence” scenarios are too dangerous. Many people think you are invincible just because you practice martial arts, but awareness and escape is more important than to risk injury
Yes, absolutely. There are many fake masters who claim that it's possible to reliably defend yourself against an attacker with a knife while being unarmed, where in reality, that is next to impossible. I've seen clips of people defending themselves with improvised weapons such as chairs etc. that they used really mainly as a barrier. The best way to defend against an attack like that is to avoid the situation altogether, situational awareness first, if escape is an option (it's not always), escaping or indeed if there is no other way, compliance. Still though, even fully compliant victims sometimes end up basically getting executed. If it's a robbery of sorts, give them what they want if the robbery can't be avoided. If they are after your life, avoiding it altogether is basically the only option, unless you happen to have for example a firearm and actually notice the attack early enough to actually respond. Knife attacks truly are one of the most terrifying things in the world, sadly.
"the strongest form of self-defense is to escape" I like that he adds "if you can get a hit in first" As a Brit who has dealt with some stabby gentlemen in the dark once before, yep! I got a good cut off and then belted it. I rather promptly threw up when the adrenaline spike was over and didn't leave the house for months. The Japanese are fortunate to live in such a society where lads aren't willing to threaten each other with lethal weapons for petty amounts of money! When you note that you're not "promoting" violence per se, i see this look in Seki-sensei's eyes... We'd be better off if we maturely and sensibly learnt the reality of violence - I believe this helps the young to choose to avoid violence because they more intimately know the grim reality of it. This also allows them to defend themselves in worse-case scenarios. Thank you sirs!
The problem with making blanket condemnations of “violence” is that sometimes, rarely, violence is the correct, sensible response. Someone presenting a physical threat is one of those times. I’m old and can’t run any more due to severe arthritis. A walking cane is recognized worldwide as a medical device that cannot be taken away from you on the mere grounds that it is physically possible to use it as a weapon, unlike knives, saps etc. whose primary purpose is to do harm. Nonetheless there have been, and still are, self defense methods that focus on the use of the humble cane. I personally recommend a stout wooden cane. Those aluminum things are too flimsy.
Wow! That wrist lock in the intro is shown in several European treatises as well, but with dagger! The rondel dagger was often unsharpened so that you could grab the blade and lock the opponent's wrist in a similar manner here. I believe both Sigmund ain Ringeck and Fiore d'ei Liberi show this.
Great thing to hear from a teacher of martial arts, to be honest, about the fact that running is best self-defense. But as a last resort, these techniques might give you a chance...

Id love to see how seki sensei would use a shillelagh. It’s an Irish walking stick that is about jo length. It is a straight stick with a large knot of wood at the top. Hello Shogo, recently I was watching my favorite animated series titled Blue Eye Samurai and it's a Netflix animated series about a mixed-race female samurai named Mizu who seeks revenge in 17th-century in Japan, I wondering if you and Seki Sensei can react to it because this series have a good review by critics and fans alike
sorry, in reality no one will be swinging a knife as if it's a longsword. Knife will be concealed 90% of the time and you won't realize you've already been stabbed or the knife will be in the back hand in a hammer grip with the free hand extended for control or grabs. Many attackers will attempt a tackle to get close and get that knife close to your body. When you have a knife and try to fight someone your goal is stabbing, not cutting. Unless done on some specific places (like thighs) cuts arent life threathening. For training self defense against knives it's fun to buy some very durable red sharpies, get 2 sets of white clothes from like a second hand store to make them cheaper and "spar", one person trying to stab the other with the sharpie. Then after a minute you can take off your clothes and look how many times were you stabbed. Training like that will boost your survival chances against knife attacks by many %. So for most people it's from 5% to like 15%.
I was wondering for weeks now, is there a style where you can defend yourself with a bokuto against a real katana? If there isn't any, then can seki sensei develop a style in where he can showcase how fighting with a bokuto can be beneficial against a real katana?
@letsasksekisensei im a sensei in koga Ryu ninjutsu and to us a hanbo is half a bo where han supposedly means half and a tanjo is half a han. Hanbo is walking stick length, roughly 90 to 100cm
I missed one scenario: you thrust with the stick and the opponent catches it near the tip. It's a similar problem to spear vs sword. Once someone gets a grip on the longer weapon, it gets dangerous.
@@SpecJack15 You mean prying it out of his hand again, or avoiding capture last second? If he holds it, the situation is likely symmetrical, meaning that neither has a mechanical or tactical advantage.
there are self defense instructors who said, escape is one of self defense methods, but it's not the strongest. not always the best or most effective too, as it can lead to more danger.

Suddenly I see more and more people carrying a cane :)
sorry, in reality no one will be swinging a knife as if it's a longsword.
I like the staff more than I do katana :D
38 seconds ago?
I'm super early today lol
isnt that technically a hanbo? why call it a jo when its not 6 foot in length?
The definition of each weapon’s name differ depending on the style!
Since you have momentum of the jo staff, you can rotate your end of the jo if your opponent catches it at the other end.
@@SpecJack15 You mean prying it out of his hand again, or avoiding capture last second?
If he holds it, the situation is likely symmetrical, meaning that neither has a mechanical or tactical advantage.
I just shoot lasers from my stick.
there are self defense instructors who said, escape is one of self defense methods, but it's not the strongest. not always the best or most effective too, as it can lead to more danger.
A jō (杖:じょう) is an approximately 1.27-metre (4.2 ft) wooden staff. What the Sensei uses is much shorter. This not Jo - this HANBO...
The names and definitions of tools can vary by Ryuha (school). In Asayama Ichiden-ryū, what is commonly called “hanbō” is also called jō.
Love you guys, from Canada!
