The end of this song…our field of dreams, engulfed in fire, your arson’s match your somber eyes and I’ll still see it until I die you’re the loss my life. 😩 like being stabbed in the heart. Love love love this video!
Taylor actually has a massive vocal range, she just doesn´t use all of it for storytelling, emotive and style choices. She also has excellent vocal technique and uses her voice like an instrument to tell stories and also the reason why she can sing live for over 3 hour shows several days a week without losing her voice. Se also is a master of vocal cadance and inflections. There is a reason why Taylor can sing any song in any genre but other singers have problems covering her songs.
Dan! I was today years old when I discovered you had a UA-cam channel!!! I follow you on the Gram and TT but had no idea about YT! At least I can go back and watch ALL your content….so fun 😊
Gasp! I had always thought of the “legendary” line to be like Barney Stinson legendary. I didn’t even consider the meaning to be in the mythical sense! 😭💔
Especially heartbreaking when you consider everything that went down with ratty Matty. The image she had of him in her mind for a decade was a complete fabrication. He was such a let down and such a betrayal. This song sounds like a pretty and sad love song... It's actually fking BRUTAL 😭😭😭
Every time I hear that line I can I almost see her rolling her eyes like….yeah, yeah, you keep saying it, but do you actually mean it? Like deep down she knew he was just saying what he thought she wanted to hear😢 Heartbreaking 💔
@@ladymarmaladebakes I feel it's more in retrospect. He's said it a million times... made her believe it right up until he broke her heart. Now she's left reeling, trying to understand how someone who said they loved her so much could treat her that way. (Whatever it was he did.) Like she's trying to figure out if she built this thing up in her head to be something it wasn't.... but he told her he loved her about a million times, so maybe it wasn't her. That's how I take it any way.
Dan - another great lyric break down. I posted this below in a reply to someone, but I thought I'd repost it here for everyone else. I think this song is about not just the breakdown of their relationship, but the loss of the wedding and future he promised her. Starting with 'waltzing back into rekindled flames'. The waltz is the traditional wedding dance. She calls him "you standup guy" - because he stood her up, "You Holy Ghost" - because he ghosted her at the (hypothetical) altar. All of these things come from the bridge - "talking rings and talking cradles ... I wish I could unrecall how we almost had it all". After waiting for 6 years for Joe to marry her, here came Matty saying he would marry her in a heartbeat and they could start a family. This song is the wedding that didn't happen. And the future he promised her that didn't happen. At an actual wedding when either the bride or groom is a no-show and the guests are awkwardly standing around wondering if the reception would still go on or be cancelled - after all the food has already been paid for and someone needs to eat it. Her wedding never even got that far so she's pictured dancing phantoms (ghostly wedding guests) on the terrace at her imaginary reception, being embarrassed for her for being stood up at her nonexistent wedding. Anyway, that's my take on it.
I think about this song A LOT. It tells so much with so few words, really. First of all, the flames are 'rekindled' and they 'know the steps' which tells you how much we don't know at all about how deep this was and how long it simmered. I went through similar and it was so devastating at the time. Glad to see you here--I love coming across your IG.
Ohhh, that one. Only if he immediately gets to do “So High School” as an emotional palate cleanser. Good sequencing job on that one, Ms. Swift-*thank you.*
The first time I heard "you are the loss of my life" line, I thought she meant he was like the biggest loss she has experienced, but now I can only hear it as "you were a waste of time" similar to "good riddance" in the smallest man..."
@@mymfard4663exactly!!! Anyone who thinks this song is about Joe hasn't been paying attention for the last 6 years 😅 6 years isn't a get love QUICK scheme in any world. The ratty cracky Matty references across this song are actually crazy. The imagery alone between Cardigan/Betty and the line "dancing phantoms on the terrace (standing in my front porch light), are they second hand (kiss you on the porch in front of all your stupid friends) embarrassed"... Is lyrical genius 😭😭😭
Yeah... But So Long London is just sad. And she wishes that guy happiness and love in his future. This song is fking brutal and she absolutely doesn't wish this other man anything good for his future 😅
Really enjoyed this - I've listened to loml so many times and felt like I couldn't uncover any more links, but the painting theme that carries through was one I didn't pick up on in relation to the conman/counterfeit art line. Thank you, this was brilliant!!
When you look at her live performances she has a much larger range than people realise - check out rep , like try to hold your own against those Choirs but she chooses to use it in vocal control, emotion and storytelling because there is where she shines like a diamond.
One last comment, sorry for spamming - I tend to comment as the video goes on.. LOL The one lyric "and all at once, the ink bleeds" pretty much sums up the entire anthology. For Taylor turns her pain into art and her masterful pen must have nearly run dry trying to process all her emotions in this time!
The "dancing phantoms on the terrace, are they second hand embarrassed" are her "all her stupid friends" that she will kiss him in front of on her portch from Cardigan 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Because apparently a cinephile is the same thing as an actor despite the fact that it's the 1975 who have 2 full music videos in black and white with a 20s themed story), or another song DEFINITELY based on pure lyrical analysis and song/context analysis where she is expressing trauma about John Mayer somehow being twisted into a reference about a mere sad breakup song with Jake Gyllenhaal really, really turns me off. I don't mind having fun with different possible interpretations of lyrics.... But when a songwriter is literally saying on a song that she doesn't know if an age gap was morally "legal" or at the very least ethical or not and her ex was trying to manipulate and convince her that she was mature beyond her years so the fact that she was still a teenager wasn't actually sexual exploitation.... After calling him a cinephile, she then starts alluding to different movies - A Field of Dreams, The Wizard of Oz etc. You know how she keeps her songs vague and generic so that listeners can put their own interpretations on them, but there's usually a specific lyric to let the other person know that, yes this one's about you. If he's a cinephile, I'm wondering if we need to go back through folklore, evermore and Midnights to see every time she mentions movies (ie Exile) if it might be about Matty when we all assumed it was Joe (or someone else). Yikes!
I am genuinely positive it’s about Matty. The Smallest Man is 100% about him and this song has many parallels. The references to rekindled flames, and being “just kids”, Mr. Steal your girl, (because I believe she genuinely struggled with feelings for him while in her relationship with Joe, as described in songs like Guilty as Sin etc. And even some songs on Midnights are quite suspicious, which they were writing together during that period when she wrote Midnights…) I also feel that none of the songs about Joe are remotely angry. The most anger we get from her toward him is in So Long London, when she says “and I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” The rest of her songs about the breakup with Joe really seem to be from a place sadness but acceptance.
Yeah, here are my two cents on the matter: I believe the sad but accepting songs are about breaking up with Joe because it was probably a long time coming, and she had accepted that it had to end. The angry, heartbroken songs are probably about Matty because the end of that relationship was a shock to her. Also, the songs about longing and wanting out of a relationship, on this album as well as previous ones, are probably about Matty, too.
