  • Slow filling toilet repair.
If your cistern is filling slowly and you have similar internals to this cistern, there is a good chance that the Inlet Float Valve Diaphragm Washer is faulty (bit of a mouthful).

Great if you can do it yourself yes, but if you haven't got a clue if are all fingers and thumbs..... tradesmen still has to get to the job, find the issue and rectify.
Try it: Start this job from scratch...start the clock and see how long it took you to identify the issue, locate correct part and install. You are definitely looking at least an hour plus cost if part. So £35 - £45.00 for a professional to do? If it's £80.00 then yes you are probably getting a bad deal, unless you live in the middle of nowhere....

It is easier to replace the diaphragm in place if the arm is removed. On my model it just clicks out of its pivot behind the washer housing. The arm then clicks back into position easily. Otherwise this is all excellent.

My Cistern Inlet Float Valve Diaphragm Washer was very slow filling and as suggested I have replaced the Siamp Cistern Inlet Float Valve Diaphragm Washer which was split exactly as you described. Having checked and rechecked a number of times that I have reassembled it correctly I am left with a cistern valve that will not turn off when the float rises and eventually the water overflows down the flush unit. I have been told that that lifting the float on it's own will not necessarily stop the water flow because it is worked by water pressure and and I need to let the water rise to turn off the flow. This doesn't work either! The only way I have found to stop the flow is to press the small round part on top of the unit with a screw driver. This fizzes a bit and seems to let out air and water and will stop the water flow until it is flushed when I have to press it again. Has anyone a solution to this problem other than completely replacing the unit which will be difficult in my case as I have a fully enclosed back to wall pan which I am loathe to remove myself. Has anyone out there had experience of this? Is there another part I need, my plumbing supplier didn't seem to know?

    • @handymancraftglasgow
      @handymancraftglasgow  Рік тому

Couple of things to try. This can be caused by the diaphragm not being seated properly. If you have checked it again - make sure it is still in tact. Also make sure you have the correct diaphragm for your inlet valve. There are a few different makes, the one in the video as you know is Siamp - assess if yours is the same.

Great video - unfortunately it hasn’t worked for me. Toilet was taking about 10 minutes to refill. Got a new washer and followed the steps including lining up both notches (inside the washer & the connection to the valve - but when I switch the water back on it runs constantly and loudly - so worse than before! Have had to keep the water turned off. Do you have any suggestions to resolve? Thanks.

Further to my comment 9 days ago and after getting no answer from local plumbers I had another go myself having already changed the Inlet Float Valve Diaphragm Washer as described in the video. The solution is simple but not mentioned in any video I've seen. There is circular piece on top of the valve stem with a depression in the centre. This is to let the air out of the unit. Whilst filling the system depress this with a small screwdriver and you will hear and see bubbles as air is released. Now having replaced the valve and let the air out it works just fine!

Thanks for this. I followed the steps in the video but the water was running constantly and flowing into the toilet. I tried your tip by pushing down the button at the top of the valve when the toilet was filling. This helped as the water now stops when refilled - but is still noisy/whistling when filling and takes about a minute to fill. How long do you keep button pressed down? Any suggestions on how to stop the excessive noise and reduce the fill time? Thanks.

Usually its fine. I would make sure I have access to a new valve if required - that is, if it breaks. So check your local screwfix or similar and make sure they have the valves in stock. After that put a bit of pressure on it. You want to try and support the valve as much as possible to try and keep the body of the valve stable so the plastic is not twisting, the only part you want to be moving is the nut you are undoing. It should come loose no problem.

You, sir, are a diamond :) I went down the Screwfix route too, and found it a breeze following your video. The hardest part for me was turning off the water, as the bathroom fitter had directed the screw head towards the back of the toilet pan, making it tricky to get a screwdriver in there! After that, it took about two minutes to change the washer, even for a hamfisted DIYer like me - so if you're worried about how difficult this can be.....don't be!

The waters only supposed to pass through the whole in the place place on the siamp diaphragm. When the rubber splits it passes through this instead. This actually causes restriction of water as it's not passing it's designed path. It's this hole which the float pushes against to stop the flow of water.

Thanks so much for this video! Really useful and super easy to follow.
Since I wanted to do this straight away, I found the washer on Screwfix too like some other on here have too. Took some searching though, so here's the link to "Arctic Products Siamp Diaphragm Washer (5006J)"
    www.screwfix.com/p/arctic-products-siamp-diaphragm-washer/5006j

Brilliant video, thanks for sharing. I had the same issue (the split was in the same spot exactly) and although I got ripped off by Screwfix for the part, it's cured the problem in 5 mins. Thanks again.

I found a tiny bit of water softener behind the inlet which led to the Toilet over filling, just a tiny crystal that hadn't dissolved. Thanks for Video Sir.......saved me 80 Quid.

Thank you, handyman. The exact problem here now fixed insitu. I thought it was air in supply pipework causing the hammer, not a split in the siamp filler valve rubber washer. Much appreciated and thankful of finding your (rather old now) video. Cheers.

Many thanks. Had a bit of a job unscrewing it, but once it was off, it was a piece of cake to replace the valve. Now my cistern fills in 32 seconds! Compared to 5 mins before

Hey Handyman, could you advise which brand that water fill valve is? I think I may need to replace the whole thing. I have the exact same one and was wondering how I could find it, would you know? Cheers.

Thanks for the video, got exactly the same problem. I've had to adjust the main holding "screw" to get good water flow through, but I did find a tiny slit in the diaphragm which I'm about to replace.

If you have changed the rubber it usually means its not seated peoperly. Try it again and make sure the notch is lined up.
