I’m very excited for the 2021 MT-07 update. If it’s anything like the 2020 Tracer 700 I assume it will fix most of the issues. I’d buy the new Tracer 700 if they sold it in the US! Anyway, I had a 2015 one of these and the engine was absolutely the highlight, but the brakes and suspension ruined the whole experience. They must be upgraded. 4 years later I have a current SV650 and it’s better in almost every respect. Which has the better engine/transmission or styling is debatable. Oh and the seat on the SV650 is an absolute plank, but the 2015 MT-07 wasn’t much better and I’m happy they improved it for the current one. I got real lucky on my 2018 MT07. Bought from a dealership used with only 78 miles on it. Cost went from $8000+ brand new to only paying $5750. The original owner's wife forced him to return it when she found out he bought it behind her back! Lol.
Adjustable rebound damping on the rear shock too from 2018 onwards 😉 ...... and yeah corrosion is still an issue for some unfortunately ... the paint finish on the 07 is a bit hit n miss, ya might get lucky and have no issue but ya also might not be so lucky 🤷♂️ Good job it has a freaking awesome engine to make up for it ... makes more torque than an R6 and the 07 is lighter too 😁

My only ride on a Yamaha, was my mates RD 200 back in the late 70s. The suspension dived braking unsettling the bike pre corner. Perhaps it was just his bike but I always went for Kawasaki's or Honda's.

I own a black 2019 master of torque model for over 3 months and I love everything about it! At low RPMs, it behaves like a kitten and at high it's like a beast. On this bike, you just measure fun per mile nothing else. It's my first bike so I really think it's the best beginner bike out there...I am sure I will keep it for some time! Cons? Maybe that sometimes I get a blank shift indicator(somehow it gets stuck in some gear... and vibrations around 4-5k rpm, but I guess they are normal for inline 2 engines? Right?
Bar end mirror + remove rear light + hand guard + oz rims + accossato on the clutch and front break + brembo on breaking + hell on the cables + maybe ohlins on both rear and back = absolute beauty.
The MT07 statistically has been proved to be the most reliable bike in it class since 2014. Although I don’t think you can really go wrong with any Japanese bike.
Yamaha have been the most unreliable brand I've owned. Stats are of little comfort when you have issues. Can you provide the source for that information too? It would be interesting to see how that's been determined. Also there's a saying, "There's lies, damn lies and then there's statistics".
@@Englishbikerdan Just google it. It is well known that Yamaha has been the most reliable motorcycle manufacturer .. I agree, that a bad personal experience of ownership would cloud anyone’s judgement on a brand as it has certainly yours. I personally wish it was Triumph
@@Steve-motorcycles Did you know Yamaha had the highest number of recalls over the last decade? I think the study you are referring to is the consumer reports reliability study, which studied 11,000 consumers who bought new motorcycles between 2008 and 2014. If you look at total sales over those years though, the report covers a tiny fraction and it was more of a survey really. So not really accurate at all to determine the most reliable brand as it's a tiny snapshot of total worldwide sales. Either way, all brands have issues but Yam has had the most for me. Honda has been the most reliable for me personally.
@@Jafmanz what you talking to i have almost died 4 times while driving a car motorcycle Atv. my worst one was on an atv 50mph crash on a curve but all i got was cute and bruises and a little rash. i was i slid and flew off a little bump of dirt. and less than a meter beside it was a guard rail
It's interesting actually that you mention corrosion issues with the coolant pipes and swingarm; i ride an XJ6 (the bike this replaced) and i had to replace one of the coolant pipes, and treat the swingarm due to corrosion. With that in mind, i'd suspect its a general issue with all mid range, mid sized yamahas?
I know this is a old video. They should make a mt07 sp with öhlins suspension like the mt09, that would be awesome. We need a 2023 ride review, to see if Yamaha got that suspension sorted out. I tried sitting on a 2022 and to me the seat felt really hard, if I bought one I would definitely buy the comfort seat for it
Honestly, I don't know why your even review this bike, having owned it already. I bought the 2019 in that color. Honestly the color is great. The instrument cluster is good. It just shouldn't be that low and forward. Why Yamaha puts the key up front, to me, is stupid. I'd have rather had the older version with soft suspension because, believe me, this ain't a comfy highway/commuter. It is a stellar urban assault vehicle though. But I have a better one. And I'm not talking about the 2011 Ninja 1000 I did an even trade for my MT-07 with 11,500 miles on it in one year. Never had an issue with the MT-07. The bike is like a frog that wants to jump all day. My 1986 SRX600 is my urban assault vehicle. Smooth, predictable, and 287lbs wet. Good review though. It is easy to get it out of shape as you said. I think more people want the MT-09 because it's way more power.
I owned a 2016 M07, as I said and there were updates. It made a lot of sense to test the new one as they'd made a few changes. Sadly, for me, they weren't enough to tempt me back to 'the dark side of Japan' but I understand why people like the bike. It's all about that engine, which is a very fun unit.
Love a bit if Pirbright bends! If you carry on instead of taking the right hand turn down the national limit road, then take a left under the bridge at the T junction, those bends towards Deepcut are far more fun imo. Also, another great one is Bourley Road, goes between Fleet and Aldershot. Really nice fast, twisty road.
ACF50 never solved the issue. I even had a new swingarm under warranty which was corroding after 4 months. It's preventative and not a magic cure. I had EBC pads on the mine which were better but they're still pretty awful brakes.
EnglishBikerDan mine is a 2016 bike with 35k on the clock. When I got the bike I dabbed a bit oh black Hammerite paint along the weld and under the chain,, sprayed it with acf50 regularly and never had an issue. The brakes are not the best but swapped the pads recently with Brembo’s and they are so much better. As for the coolant pipes, I have sprayed those with heat resistant engine paint and they look like new. A tad of maintenance on this bike and it will last the test of time. For the price, it’s a great bike. I commute all year round so it’s now been through 4 winters
@@Steve-motorcycles I had mine around 3 years and did about 25k miles in total and 2 winters. The swingarm was rusty, frame (under the tank) was rusted, lots of other minor areas too. Coolant pipes of course as that's a well known one. It's a cheaply made fun bike but sometimes, giving it all the TLC makes little difference as the paint is so thin. I know many people powder coat the swingarm now which resolves the issue. It should be needed though. I also had about 4 sensors fail in those 3 years so it left a very bad taste. It was the most unreliable bike I've had in 20 years. A real shame as that engine is awesome.
I am am currently doing my licence on this bike and I can tell you that a 180 kilos is not light... I almost dropped it and the fact that I am on my first bike ever says something I do not recommend this to beginners. It goes up to 35-40 in first gear and the throttle is hella sensitive. Thats my experience and also my opinion. It is still a great fun bike ngl but its not for a first timer.
The first bike I rode was a CB500. I can tell you it was terrifying. However, I soon got used to it and by the time I took my test I was looking for a bike with more power. You'll get used to it and in no time it'll seem easy. Good luck with your test.
I have my MT 07 2019 en route as I am typing this comment. Although I'm more into supersports the smaller width of the handlebars on the MT and the riding position make it a better city-bike. Just a quick question man: I too noticed the weakness of the brakes. But did you have the chance to test the ABS? if yes how responsive is it?
For me the ABS is far too aggressive on this bike. When it cuts in you really feel it and it basically reduces the effectiveness of the brakes. That's in essence how ABS works but to me it gets in the way quite a bit on this bike but then I've spent more years riding without ABS than I have with it.
@@Englishbikerdan Thanks for your reply man really appreciate it. And you explain things quite nicely both in your videos and your replies. You have yourself a subscriber from Cyprus ;)
Looking at this review as I plan on doing my full license soon and I'm going "this route at the start looks very familiar..." Turns out it's my commute to work 😂😂👌🏻👌🏻 great review though - covers pretty much everything I'm looking to know about it!
Haha, yes I live locally so it's my commute too! MT07 is a very fun bike despite some issues. Good luck with the test and hope all goes well. Cheers! Dan ✌️
I had a -16 model aswell. Really liked it, but after a year I was done with the "rollercoaster". But a good bike, lightweight and lovely engine. (I have a RnineT Pure now.) Well done Dan!
@@Englishbikerdan No, "only" 116Nm. And 110 bhp. But it's enough! Between you and me, I lifted the front wheel shifting from 5th to 6th gear in 180km/h!!!
@@Englishbikerdan I did a testride on the R1250R aswell. Lovely bike! But there's more rock'n'roll in the RnineT, imo. Or as they say at the petrolstation "who owns the old BMW?" Ha ha!
If you come to Jamaica n ride one of the Chinese bikes they have here for a good 6 months.. Then go on the Fz, mannn ur gonna see how much better the Fz is in all categories even braking.
Now you just need to go back and re-review the 2019 SV650, since the footage from your SV650 review was lost anyway. (they upgraded the brakes for 2019)
Only thing stopping me from getting one of these bikes is the headlight. I just wish they changed it to be like the ones on the MT-09 and the R1. Anyway great video, very informative and enjoyable as per usual.
One of my friends bought this bike, within 2000ish miles his swing arm was rusted to hell, he ended up selling it on and getting a Speed Triple. Enjoyed his time on it just a shame about it rusting up so quickly.
@@Englishbikerdan Yeah, just a shame that two years on from your MT-07 and they've still not sorted the rusting issue. Anyways loving the content buddy, got my DAS booked in this year and I can't wait. A big 40yr old kid waiting for it hehehe.
Hey, I visited the showroom to see the bike and noticed the seat noise was squeaking loads (from the seat rubber touching the tank). The sales people said it was 'normal' which I found very strange. Little squeak is understandable but a big squeak isn't normal for me when the engine is off. Has anyone ever experienced this?
@@Englishbikerdan Thanks for letting me know! I heard a solution is to put some silicon to avoid it, otherwise i guess just some masking tape to avoid the rubbing!😅p.s. after watching the cb650r review, i prefer the exhaust much more but unfortunately they dont sell them where i live, so mt-07 it is! Thanks for your reviews, keep them up!
I took it for a test ride today (same color). New rider too (some experience with the Transalp 650 and Bandit 600) Such a great bike! Not a big fan of the brakes but an amazing overall experience. I'm going to buy the blue version in a few weeks. Thanks for the review mate!
Question. I am about to get my license so i am looking for a bike not to toy arround and make sure that it will help me in the road as long as i respect the rules. So is it a good first option for someone who hasn't ride before motorcycle?? By the way nice video and thanks a lot for the great presentation.. Keep up the good job
yes, the new model still has corrosion issues; they only updated the suspension components, the seat and the styling (*actually i see you covered that) i don't understand how you can say the throttle response is ok from a cable throttle though; you open it and it goes that said i agree with you on the other points. power output plummets after 9000 rpm, best point to shift is probably no higher than 9500. suspension is soft, dive is pretty bad and it produces some unnerving wobbles every now and then. i'm upgrading my suspension soon-ish so i hope to have a valid opinion on how it changes the bike. i'm also changing to bridgestone s22 tyres soon; on the racetrack i found the front-end grip in particular, lacking, which severely hampered my corner exit speed. brakes could definitely be better, but it's far from the worst i think lol
It's just a feeling I had from the throttle. Some bikes you feel like it's more direct and on this one, it almost felt like the cable was just a little bit slack but on my 2016 it was the same. One of those things that's hard to quantify but how it felt to me. I'm sure with better suspension this thing would be such a brilliant all round bike. I'd love to see an MT07 SP.
Perfect commuting bike and is a lot of fun if that’s your thing . Yeah it has some issues like you mentioned , I abuse this bike a lot in first gear - everyone rides differently 😂
Just sayin, theres not much point in blurring the speedo. The fuzz know how long those centre lines are and can pretty accurately gauge your speed from that alone.
DNA filter, ECU flash, and full exhaust really REALLY beefs up the midrange and allows it to make more peak HP without the falling off. As far as the brakes "lacking feel," please consider the bike is new, the brakes not bedded, and you'll need at least a couple hundred miles to evaluate what the brakes are going to do without changing.
It certainly had enough miles on it to have bedded the pads in. I also owned one of these bikes and the brakes were the same, they lack feel and bite but it's a cheap bike so goes with the territory.
@@exothermal.sprocket Yep, if the 07 had the 09 brakes that would be so good. I still maintain they need an MT07 SP. I would happily pay an extra £1000 - £1200 for better suspension, brakes and a quickshifter. The engine is perfect as it is on the 07.
What about the 2017 or later MT-09 versus this..brakes, suspension any better? Comfort Ergos any better? Throttle snatchiness worse or same. I know mt09 faster. So what would you get as more experienced rider?
@@Aurelius_Mind If you want a bike that's easy to live with, feels smoother, and riders smoother, get the z400. The engine requires a bit of input to get going. It's feels sluggish if you're just looking for that punch and you'll notice it getting slightly annoying around the city/town when you'll be having to hold the revs high just to be able to bust a move. The annoying part will the the unnecessary sound and effortsome throttle input. Thankfully, the gear ratios feel long and don't require frequent shifting. But the bike feels smooth, no noticeable vibes, strongly built. The braking, although adequate for the bike, feels softer when compared to the 390. Also the ABS is a lot more intrusive on it and kicks in annoyingly sooner which makes enthusiastic riding on it kind of a gamble. It just feels kind of "not there yet" if you really wanna play hard. Okay now for the 390. Just get this if you don't ever wanna stop having fun. This bike is fun all day long, any day. I keep telling all my friends that torque is where the fun is at if you really wanna play that hard. This bike is such a hoot to ride anywhere you take it. The torque kicks in alot more earlier which makes riding in the city a bliss. The early torque is just a sucker punch in the face out on the curves and while enthusiastic riding. It could feel like a bit too much for a novice, as opposed to the z400, which is a bit more friendly in that aspect. This bike is just so eager and it can be seen in it's DNA. It's purposely built to handle enthusiastic riding. It's got a slightly bigger front disc rotor with steel braided brake lines and sintered brake pads and boy does that make a difference in braking. It drops a really sure footed anchor when and where you want it to. The ABS unit is beautifully programmed and doesn't feel intrusive at all, even under really hard braking. The engine feels slightly vibey at lower rev ranges but smoothens out surprisingly as the revs climb. You might feel the need to shift gears alot more frequently because if you're not in the right gear, the engine begins coughing violently. The bike is really strongly and well built quality wise, but KTMs have a questionable reputation in terms of frequent valve blow ups. (The ones sold here are surprisingly doing well so far, not so much in the American market though). I feel like it's much more convenient being a single, and since all the ones sold around me are doing pretty good so far without any issues. The Kawi comparatively, will run without any hiccups for life. The 390 has a gorgeous instrument cluster, arguably the best in class, even upto some middleweight segment bikes, with tonnes of info on display and even lets you connect to your phone, take or reject phonecalls and change music tracks, which is super fun! All in all, if you really want a bike that you can depend on any time, and if you know that you don't plan on riding really hard, get the Kawi. Not to say that its not fun, it's okay but it definitely feels shy of the KTM. But if you know for sure that you're gonna be a street Rossi, and and want the more fun bike, get the 390. And it's not uncomfortable by any means. They're both comparable in terms of riding comfort. Not to say that the KTM is a bad quality machine or has issues, which it doesn't, but it's definitely not up to the quality levels of the Kawi. How do I have a confident say in this? Well, I own the 390 myself and my brother owns the z400. Have fun, on either one of them! :) Edit: Forgot to mention that the KTM has a stiffer suspension setup, especially in the front and feels quite jumpy on bumps but it helps to keep it really sharp and planted on any corner, if its not a bumpy corner. The rear feels adequately sprung for my weight. The Kawi on the other hand is very adequately sprung for everyday riding, it is slightly softer in the front than the KTM. Its feels better on the bumps compared to the KTM. It also stays very true in a corner. You won't feel it giving out unless you're trailbraking or entering a corner really hot. Cheers! Also edit 2: Try to get a test ride on both of them and you'll know for sure. Good luck to you!
@@MrDavidRosca yeah but only when there's a pillion on. Otherwise it's pretty wide and accommodating. I don't really know if the bike you tested had lowered front forks but the seats are pretty horizontal, without any apparent slant. This is also a very bad thing for the pillion since it takes a lot of effort from your bum muscles to be able to stay planted on that bike. It just feels like you could slide off of it any moment.
Thinking of getting this as my second bike. As i'm only 21 i'm restricted to an A2 licence, would this be a good bike? My main concern is the brakes, don't seem very good at all if you were using a full fist full! I'm wondering if new brake pads & lines would help fix that.

Yeah basically spend 3000€ on upgrades... Just get a mt-09
@@Tonyx.yt. of course, get the 09, still do the same 😂
Or MT09 SP and just ride. :D
In my country here i easily rode it around 170-180km/h and enjoying the crazy windblast😂😂😂

@@Englishbikerdan Honda is also another great brand for known reliability.
Toying with owning my first bike and think this is the one! Thanks for the excellent review 👍

Thanks mate! 👍
Runs out of puff? Try twisting your wrist in 4th and watch the world go blurred.
I love my MT07!
I had one for 2 years, they're not strong at the top end.
Agreed...any bike is going to run out off puff doing well in excess of the speed limit
yeah man any more is risking your life.
@@iamf6641 I risk my life at work every day hundreds of times a day... My 10 mile commute on my bike is a insignificant risk yet so much enjoyment.
I suspect you're right.
Cheers Chris! Will give those a whirl soon! I think I know that Fleet to Aldershot route. Very nice!
Tried your suggestion this morning, nice little extended test route now, thanks Chris!
Looking forward to trying this engine in the Tenere 700.
Same, it might even be my new "do everything bike".
I love this moto so much, so easy to control and to ride.
It sounds so lovely.
I am considering the MT07 or the KTM Duke 690...but I am leaning more to this
Great review bro. I'm getting mine tomorrow. I really can't wait omg😫
Someone's not going to sleep much tonight! Enjoy your new bike!
I have a ninja 400 but am thinking of switching to an MT07 as i think id prefer something more upright and comfortable
Sounds like a good choice, plenty of power too.
naked bike is dae way
At speeds above 120kmh, it gets uncomfortable with the wind buffeting.
Keep it lubricated with ACF50 and change the brake pads, the issues are sorted

MT - Master of Torque.
Except Mt-03 2016-ogoing the lower amount of torque in his class :D
Thank You Almighty God for blessing me I will buy one for myself

I had a -16 model aswell. Really liked it, but after a year I was done with the "rollercoaster". But a good bike, lightweight and lovely engine. (I have a RnineT Pure now.) Well done Dan!
Never ridden the RnineT but what a lovely looking bike. Plus that engine, 143Nm torque? Mad!!
@@Englishbikerdan No, "only" 116Nm. And 110 bhp. But it's enough! Between you and me, I lifted the front wheel shifting from 5th to 6th gear in 180km/h!!!
Crikey, that's enough! I recently rode the R1250R which has the 143Nm. Absolutely bonkers but in a bike that looks very sane. Happy riding!

Only thing stopping me from getting one of these bikes is the headlight. I just wish they changed it to be like the ones on the MT-09 and the R1.

I agree, 09 looks really good!
One of my friends bought this bike, within 2000ish miles his swing arm was rusted to hell, he ended up selling it on and getting a Speed Triple. Enjoyed his time on it just a shame about it rusting up so quickly.

Haha yes. Mine squeaked so much.
@@Englishbikerdan Thanks for letting me know! Actually since writing this comment, I bought a MT07. It's awesome
@@jacobt8449 you could get a MT07 and neuter it until you are ready to unleash it....
yes, the new model still has corrosion issues; they only updated the suspension components, the seat and the styling (*actually i see you covered that)
i don't understand how you can say the throttle response is ok from a cable throttle though; you open it and it goes
that said i agree with you on the other points. power output plummets after 9000 rpm, best point to shift is probably no higher than 9500. suspension is soft, dive is pretty bad and it produces some unnerving wobbles every now and then. i'm upgrading my suspension soon-ish so i hope to have a valid opinion on how it changes the bike. i'm also changing to bridgestone s22 tyres soon; on the racetrack i found the front-end grip in particular, lacking, which severely hampered my corner exit speed. brakes could definitely be better, but it's far from the worst i think lol
Do you think this or an 790 duke? I’m coming from an mt09 which was a little much for me and hated the snachy throttle.
790 Duke. :)
If moneys no object then buy me one too.

Great vid. Does it have slipper clutch and q. shift?
Thanks. It doesn't have either of these.
I don't know if what you mean about blurring the speedo. Must be a UA-cam thing....... 😜
@@Englishbikerdan How many miles? My new MT-09 took at least 400-500 miles to get the rather wooden brakes to biting very sharply and strongly.
@@exothermal.sprocket From memory it had around 400 miles on the clock. MT09 brakes are pretty decent, well the SP anyway!
@@Englishbikerdan Mine is the non-sp model. Radial mount 4-pot helps as compared to the 07.
@@exothermal.sprocket Yep, if the 07 had the 09 brakes that would be so good. I still maintain they need an MT07 SP. I would happily pay an extra £1000 - £1200 for better suspension, brakes and a quickshifter. The engine is perfect as it is on the 07.
Something I would want ti get as my first bike
What about the 2017 or later MT-09 versus this..brakes, suspension any better? Comfort Ergos any better? Throttle snatchiness worse or same. I know mt09 faster. So what would you get as more experienced rider?

@@Aurelius_Mind
If you want a bike that's easy to live with, feels smoother, and riders smoother, get the z400.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the KTM has a stiffer suspension setup, especially in the front and feels quite jumpy on bumps but it helps to keep it really sharp and planted on any corner, if its not a bumpy corner.
I find the seat on the Duke 390 horrible. It's got a bit of a slant to it and I find I always slide forward into the tank.
It can only help!
@@Englishbikerdan hopefully, i'll definitely be looking at getting a MT-07 what models are the good ones?
