Planting solar panels on top of pond would result in less evaporation and free electricity for pumping. Sounds very costly but very effective but this concept has been proved in Gujrat.

This is such a successful initiative. Hope we people in cities also think in this direction of rain water harvesting to improve ground water level and water quality. We should demand water harvesting facilities to be pre-installed in new buildings. Permission to dig a new borewell must be subject to installing water harvesting and other such innovative ideas.

A Brilliant solution for Indian villages who suffer chronic water shortage! In fact agricultural loans should include an amount for rain water harvesting in villages! The previous Jayalalitha government in Tamil Nadu made water harvesting compulsory for high rise buildings but the Karunanidhi government removed that condition!

    • @GauravKumar-mm1of
      @GauravKumar-mm1of 4 роки тому

Yes there is acute shortage of drinking water in Tamil Nadu hence they should encourage this. Please do not make it a political issue. Instead focus on garnering support for this from everyone. Everybody loves greenery, ducks in the pond and flying around the trees, and the water vessels at home full of drinking water.

I dont eat meat or fish myself but in my viallage there are mallahs wand allegedly these peoples claim to be from the clan of nishadraj who was the lord rama's friend they catch and eat fish.. The fishes suffer less than a goat or chicken also they are less sensitive then them... They are also much far from us in emotional point of view .. And culturally also few sections are allowed to have them there farming is not bad according to me... I know about islam and i am aware of its dangers though

Great job. Next step should be planting various trees around the ponds, fields, along roads and on the slopes around villages. The more trees, the better. Then they should learn principles of permaculture like swales etc.

What I wonder is that when the success of this action has been proved then not the Indian government take it as an idea for so many areas in India where drought is a menace, people die, cattles die. This was done in Devas in 2006-10. Ten years have passed, has it been replicated in other areas in MP, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Orissa and the southern states. Drinking water is such a problem and when we have such a simple way of solving it why not they are encouraging it and supporting it financially to make the dry areas green again and fill the empty water vessels.

@HIMANSHU SINGH I know it but it is neighbour state. All states in the west, middle and south India have the drought problem. This states are almost without forests and the underground water was pumped out. So the people there need to catch the rainwater every possible way.

  • @SwapnilPotdar

Very informative and an enlightening documentary. We too have been doing #RainwaterHarvesting but primarily for urban areas where there is concrete spread all over leaving no space for natural rainwater percolation. If rainwater is harvested in urban areas, less water is drawn from dams which is in turn used for agriculture.
My team is in the process of undertaking a project in a rural area of similar kind. This video has inspired me even more to take up the challenge.
Kudos to your efforts and support from TATA Trust.
    Keep going

This is how it was in the olden days, until in the name of green revolution, americans advised tubewells and borewells that dried up lands big time in no time, in the meantime the ponds and lakes were occupied by vested interests and buildings made over them, then all over the world they started propaganda that in india is so underdeveloped that there is no drinking water in villages

Putting ponds higher on the property means electrical and pump maintenance costs are avoided because the water is kept where it's needed instead of having hills perennially dry, and fertile valleys perennially wet. This is otherwise a constant cost to farmers.
The pond pumps and pipes have their initial investment costs as well as maintenance costs, and fuel. They require moving sprinklers, which is another time/labor cost.
*Adding swales and other water harvesting earthworks higher on the hill lessens overall costs and time as they are set up where they are needed. It is very sustainable and doesn't require buying and waiting for replacement parts...*
Undoubtedly they've lost some soil carbon and that contributed to flooding and a lower watertable. They need to switch to permaculture methods as well...
Cob housing should never be called 'huts.' Give them a minimum 4' overhang, good foundations, and a lime clay layer and they are durable and as nice as any cement or brick house, but with fewer costs, and quite beautiful.
