I like the word "defenestrate" but more out of comedic appreciation for how people in the olden days were thrown out of towers often enough that it warranted having its own word. I read this book in June and yes, I thought it was overhyped as well! It had some likable things, but what irritated me most were actually the characters. I mean, they got better in the end, but I remember thinking they had NO reason to be rude/mean to each other (this actually put them in a huge disadvantage considering the "one has to die" rule which they discovered later on), except of it being a dark academia where people are supposed to be morally grey. I'm okay with characters being rude, mean, having a screwed-up moral compass or just plain bad to each other, but give me a reason WHY they behave like that. They were like that from the beginning on without ANY logical reason imo. It got better a bit later but the damage was done already lol.
Also Atlas Six is getting traditionally published! Macmillan said they're going to revise/ edit and include new artwork as well, so maybe that will help with the inconsistencies you noticed :)
I feel like booktok is something that has a lottt of different sides. Yes, it is a great way of getting people started on reading again but the majority of those “tiktok books” are way too overhyped. Perhaps it is just because the books I have read because of tiktok just weren’t for me but *imo* there are a lot of hidden gems in the library or bookstores you can find JUST by it (the book) finding *you* , It’s almost the best way of finding a good, satisfying book. But again, it is lovely to see that a lot of people began reading again because of tiktok! (Can’t say it didn’t hype me up to get dust off my books.) And no, not all booktok books are bad, on the contrary, I think there are sick stories that got more attention over social media. All with all, very mixed opinions on booktok. Have a nice day! :))
@m. wuzowski I agree. They are all basically about one genre and the same ten books over and over again. Plus, they bring back some books I read a long time ago and totally over hype them. And i honestly don’t trust many of their opinions for recommendations because many (not all) have smut as a primary reason they like the book. No thank you. I just want some books that explore life and have vibrant worlds and characters and make you laugh and cry.
@@katien3022 this! I think the real gems you would find way out of social media or at least away from TikTok. Plus it’s not a fair deal. Books that are way better written are getting way too less appreciation by those overhyped and books
Honestly true that. I started reading again because of booktok and found some AMAZING books that are my absolute faves rn!!! However... Them being overhyped is a big problem to me. I had HUGE expectations for The song of Achilles, and I DID like the book a LOT, however my expectations were wayyyy higher than what it offered to me, that in the end I was disappointed. A great thing about it though is that I saw the description of the second book the author wrote, Circe, as books usually do at the end of their covers, and I fell in love with it sm I knew immediately that I was going to love it. And I DID!!! it's now my ulti favorite book ever!!! I read it in two days, like a day or two after I finished the song of Achilles!!
The thing that annoyed me sooo much it started to hurt is how much the other POVs contained slander against Libby. Yes, she has literally zero self esteem at first and is insecure, but come on: having all other POVs pretty much start with how much they despise her and think she's stupid was unnecessary at best and hurtful at worst. Yeah, I admit, there's a lot of self insertion here but it confirmed my fear that everyone around me will hate me for this personalty trait and disregard all other of my qualities. Couldn't there be one, just one character who at least thought neutral about her from the get-go? And no, I will forever rant about this
At first i felt the same but then the comments of some characters reminded me of stuff my brother said. I realised why my brother said it and finnaly understood how i drained him. It made me realise that yes its part of my personality but it cant be the one part i lead with, it gave me great perspective and it was hurtful but im grateful i understood it through a book and didnt loose more friendships or family bonds
From your explanations of the magic system, I imagine the author is someone who liked the idea of a science-based magic system, but doesn't actually have a strong enough science background to write one. Which no problem with not being in a STEM field, but also...maybe don't try to base your magic system on something you don't understand?
That's not the problem. She could've always done a lot of research about it. Not every author knows everything that they're writing about but they end up doing lots of research about them in order to know better. Google is free, UA-cam is free. She could've had an idea and maybe googled if that thing does have a scientific paper done somewhere and then thought about a way to put it in her story. But this is her first book I believe? So I'll be less harsh to be honest. Not many people are good the first time, and she has the potential to get better. She came up with a great idea, with time I'm sure she'll get better. Especially now that she has a publishing house!
So, Olivie Blake is actually a very well know Harry Potter fanfiction writer. OB is also not the author's real name. I feel like a lot of the hype came from the fandom because she was publishing and not because ppl actually love The Atlas Six.
That makes a lot of sense… When I saw the character drawings and descriptions I immediately thought of the most used Slytherin characters, but it might just be me 🤷🏻
The light outage and the candel really set the mood for this video it's almost as if it's intentional 😂.. love your review of the book , I had it on my tbr list but I guess I'll just skip it.
I felt like this book had a decent set up with introduction to the characters and description of the society followed by a lackluster execution of the plot. I kind of expected more maneuvering and backstabbing between the six based on synopsis. And your right that this barely had a setting. I had to keep reminding myself that it was supposedly set in an English manor house because that was not at all obvious and I kept forgetting.
excited to see you reading this! i too had very mixed feelings - i was super compelled by the story and liked some of the characters a lot (will definitely check out the sequel when that comes out). but i felt like it could really really use a proper editor, the writing was too convoluted at times and i felt like it wanted to be very smart but it just came across as overly pretentious, same with the magic system not really being explained. i think a deep edit would have cleaned these parts up
Currently reading this and I do agree with a lot of the points you make and also that is really addictive. I do feel like this could have been edited better as we're reading the characters' thoughts, but I found it difficult to follow when they were reminiscing on things that happened in the past. If it were written in italic or something or with some white space to separate it from the present, that would have been an improvement for me.
It's nice to have a video where you're just having fun with a book. It must be hard sometimes, when you have a UA-cam channel, not to feel like something you like is turning into something that feels like a duty.
I read this book a couple of week ago and while I really enjoyed the beginning, the middle part really didn’t do it for me… but the ending!!! The last third really pulled it together for me! Overall really liked it!
The book gets rewritten and looked at professionally and Olivia Blake eventually goes on to write two more books for the trilogy. The cool thing about it is if you keep going with it, the philosophy aspect pulls through (especially Callum). I doubt the people in the TikTok videos could have known that at all (nothing against them or you), but I can definitely see your points. It’s also really fun, personally, to Google when a character makes a reference I don’t get and looking it up. It gives more insight to the character. Great video!
I need to wait till March 2022 when the edited version is released. As an editor, I can't read a book that in need of an edit, no matter how pretty the art is and how the characters are so shippable. (I saw some asked for labels on the character sketches because they weren't labeled. WTF?)
A lot of the critics you had, Olivie herself mentioned in her newest video and how helpful an editor has been. Apparently the new version being published by Tor will be different from the first, so I think it will improve so much
I’ve noticed a lot of the Tik Tok books recommended are just okay. They are entertaining which is great. I started reading again because of Book Tok but I’ve since moved on to different recommendations from friends and people on Book Tube with much better luck and more rewarding and engaging stories. If that makes sense.
Oh boy… I just bought this book like 10 days ago. I’m a chemical engineer. I’m kinda picky about my science-influenced books, and by that I mean science-influenced magic systems in fantasy 😂 I hate it if they’re not accurate and I hate it when they’re pretentious trying to be “smart” when in reality it makes no sense. Now I’m nervous 😬
Loved your perspective on this book! So far, every single book recommendation i've gotten from Tiktok has just been ... disappointing to say the least (touch of darkness, looking at you) which is why i'm staying very far away from reading any books off booktok. Your video was a great way to know whether the book would actually be good without having to live through hours of disappointment while reading it myself lol
I read it and I still have no idea of the setting, she never really explains the house and its rooms, like they mention they’re eating breakfast but where?when do they eat? Who cooks it? What’s their daily routine? It’s mentioned once that Nico appears in the kitchen but who is in it? How is it? I don’t even know the place, just the “classroom” and bedrooms when the house is supposed to be a mansion. Also, the main theme of the book is the library of Alexandria, which we barely see the contents of.
SPOILERS Alsooo, did someone understand the thing about Nico’s friend (Gideon is it?) not being human and that plot with his mother? A lot of things were happening at once and were not given the time and development ig it should
I guess when you've read more and more than one genre you'd see the faults and inconsistencies of a book. Like if you're an avid sci-fi or fantasy reader or just someone who has a good enough knowledge of how scienc-y things are explained you'd be disappointed by others that define physics like how you said it was described here.. well i am wary of booktok recommendations, have to listen to Leonie and other booktubers I love before I invest in a physical copy
I just finished that books yesterday and I loved it! I have some points from a perspective of a librarian on it, and did have some hang-ups, but I ended up giving it a 4 star because I did thoroughly enjoy it and the philosphical debates it had. But I'm also not a very "visual" reader, so some things that bother others kind of.... makes it better for me lmao
I completed this book today and I loved it very very much but it's definitely not found family. And that's the best part. I loved how they are all morally grey.
The light scenario is hilarious! I am glad you chose to keep it in video :) But yes, I completely agree with your assessment of Atlas Six. I love dark academia, but I am struggling with this book! It definitely has me pausing a lot.. In comparison, I found Babel by R.F. Kuang to be unputdownable!
These videos help me so much!!! I’m in the process of writing a book (that I will probably self publish but knowing me will ask everyone I know to read it before I publish) and it is my first actual book! I’m trying to not make any blunders, and if I do publish it, I hope people will truly enjoy it, and that the reading will be smooth, as in the reader won’t be confused by plot holes and stuff. This is why I’m putting so much effort in my world building😂
Ahh Leonie~~ when you first introduced us this book I was excited. Now? Idk man 🤣 I'm an electrical engineering undergrad so hehe maybe I should read it to see if it actually is physics-y enough 🤭 but all of that aside. The premise is still good and I think I still want to read it just for fun!
Lol im back after reading it. Its fun. I did really enjoy it. But it's not the intellectual book people are making it out to be. It doesn't delve into anything "sciencey" ( for lack of better term). I would recommend it FOR FUN. Rather than a big academia style book.
lol i read this book after you mentioned it in passing in one of your older videos. all you said was 'its dark academia" and i was like yes lets go! so i'm really glad i didnt have any expectations or idea of what it was about going in -- i ended up really enjoying it. and like tiktok does recommend good books, but the way its talked about and the parts that they hype up really just sets the book up to disappoint so i totally understand how this fell flat with you. It's a shame tho.
Thank you for the video :) The book does sound like a lot of fun! Glad you had a good time. Regarding the quotes, yeah, with a bit of tweaking they would have made perfect sense, but not in their current form.
Glad I saw this before picking it up. I was concerned , because the premise is great but I’ve been burned by self published books before. The comments here say it’s being picked up by Tor, so I’ll wait for the revised edition. Thanks for going in open minded and making quality content, like always . ❤️
I'm revisiting your video after reading the book and you are so right on so many points, I completely agree with you! And, probably because my expectations were low, I really had a great time reading it, even if the magic system is flimsy at best and the science doesn't sound accurate.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book! I came at it from the perspective of “what is the main theme and how well does the book tackle that theme?” I think it did a great job of it. In my opinion, it’s main themes are “the price of knowledge” and “how does power corrupt”. Both of those themes are approached in an interesting and unique way. Is it perfect? No. But is it worth picking up to see if you enjoy the writing style and the plot? I think so!
Not a "Physics expert" per se, but a Physics student looking for her next fantasy fix. I shall also ENDURE the PAIN of reading this GREAT-SOUNDING book... for SCIENCE, of course.
This novel intrigues me but I'm really reluctant to pick up self-published books because, well, editors exist for a reason 🤷♀️ and your video seems to confirm my doubts so idk now... anyway, thanks for talking about this book and giving me more clarity!
I know this was 2 years ago but I just read the book and I really enjoyed it. Yeah I had to google a lot of words (English is not my first language) but I found the whole story so interesting and the chemistry between the characters is just chefs kiss!!!
Loved this video! I do not trust Tiktok book recs at all, but when I saw this book and read an overview of what it is about I was definitely intrigued by all the same things you pointed out. I bought it a few weeks ago but haven’t started because I was finishing a few other books, and with the announcement that it’s been picked up by Tor and will go through full revisions with an editor, before re-publishing in March, I’m thinking I’ll hold out on reading it until then. Hoping they’ll fix the vague or lack of descriptions that you mentioned because that would definitely drive crazy!
Hello, I am very excited to read this book, this week the author anunced that the book is going to be published traditional in march, with hardcover and with the text reviewed. So I think I will wait for the reviewed version, kisses 💜
omg ive been thinking ALLL books should come with little character sheet with a drawing of the character and some like basic bullet points, cuz i have a hard time imagining characters sometimes
Sooo.... I heard all the hype about this book too, then I read it and gave it two stars. Found it far too shallow for what it tried to accomplish. Feels good to be kind of validated by your video!
That spider plant looks healthy! I loved that "tiktok but better video", so many gems! I wonder if there is a "but better" science-magic system! Also, thanks for saving me a disappointment with the magic system. It sounds like the author wanted a science system very badly but knew almost nothing about science. It reminds me of Feyra from ACOTAR being passionate about painting but SJM clearly not knowing much about making of art. On the flip side Addie Larue is clearly so absorbed with art that it is clear how much VE Schwab enjoys museums and humanism and it was so clear how much it meant to Addie abd Schwab to tell their stories. I wonder is it laziness from some authors or is it just being unfamiliar with the subject...
i genuinely would die for a leonie gaming channel. also if you like stardew valley you'd probably love the harvest moon/story of seasons game series, the most recent one has been eating up allllll my free time edit: i realize this comment is almost completely unrelated to this video but still lmao
The book is basically all about these 6 characters and their relationships. Everything else is second plan, that's why there is no descriptions of world and systems, because the focus is on characters. If you like it, you will love the book, if not - it might be a little boring.
I am so excited when I see a new video of yours come up,you are my favourite booktouber! Also, as a suggestion, would you consider filming a 'study with me' video? I am also doing my master's degree and such a video from you (which would definitely be very aesthetic) would accompany my study sessions👌🙏🍂💕
I literally screamed when I saw this video.😂 I finished this book last weekend and I loved it!❤ Although I do agree with your criticism, nothing really bothered me that much. Perhaps my expectations were not as high. I did wish there was more happening though, I wanted to read more about their lectures, more danger scenes etc. But this book had REALLY good characters, I loved them all and I also ship them all together.🤭 Overall I thought it was a really promising first book and I cannot wait till the second one comes out. I really want to know what happens to these characters.

The best part of my day: Leonie calling us 'dearest dudes'
@Nina exactly!
@m. wuzowski I agree.
I think olivie blake has so much potential, she just needs a helping hand with revising/editing the books before publishing
That makes a lot of sense… When I saw the character drawings and descriptions I immediately thought of the most used Slytherin characters, but it might just be me 🤷🏻
The light outage and the candel really set the mood for this video it's almost as if it's intentional 😂.. love your review of the book , I had it on my tbr list but I guess I'll just skip it.
it was honestly the best coincidence!
If it were written in italic or something or with some white space to separate it from the present, that would have been an improvement for me.
i love how books make you escape reality and just chill for some time 😭
btw, I am a small youtuber :*
it's the best feeling!
Your house looks so cozy, I love it. Also, the classical music? Perfect. It fit so well!
It's nice to have a video where you're just having fun with a book. It must be hard sometimes, when you have a UA-cam channel, not to feel like something you like is turning into something that feels like a duty.
MORE!
the part with candles is soooo cozy! ✨and thanks for another beautiful video 🥰
the atlas six has been picked up by tor books, so i'm intrigued if it will be edited for the upcoming editions!
I read this book a couple of week ago and while I really enjoyed the beginning, the middle part really didn’t do it for me… but the ending!!! The last third really pulled it together for me! Overall really liked it!
JUST OPENED UA-cam TO WATCH SOMETHING AND MY FAVOURITE UA-camR JUST UPLOADED OMFG Leoni you're the best for real
ahh i hope you enjoy the video!
@@TheBookLeo I did🥰🥰
12:34 - Omg, that red herring Switch-eroo was too good!
Now I’m nervous 😬
i do not have anything to add but commenting for the algorithm, coming home to one of leonie's videos after a long day at work is the best!
OMG amazon i've been aggressively recommended me this book for months now, i'm so excited to see you read it for me ahahah
SPOILERS
Alsooo, did someone understand the thing about Nico’s friend (Gideon is it?) not being human and that plot with his mother? A lot of things were happening at once and were not given the time and development ig it should
I’ve been looking for something similar to kingsman too,but had to settle for the novelisation of the second movie.
I am glad you chose to keep it in video :)
But yes, I completely agree with your assessment of Atlas Six.
I should clarify, I read the updated TOR version
lol i read this book after you mentioned it in passing in one of your older videos. all you said was 'its dark academia" and i was like yes lets go! so i'm really glad i didnt have any expectations or idea of what it was about going in -- i ended up really enjoying it.
and like tiktok does recommend good books, but the way its talked about and the parts that they hype up really just sets the book up to disappoint so i totally understand how this fell flat with you. It's a shame tho.
Thank you for the video :)
The book does sound like a lot of fun!
Aaah so excited to watch this! This notification brightened my day 💛
yay that makes me happy!
the vibes of this video make me want to read this book more so than the vibes of the book itself lol
Did anyone notice her vibrato while she sang about the lights being off? That was so good!
The power outage bit where your light kept going off and on was my favorite part of this video.
whenever i watch your videos, i feel like buying lots and lots of books and just read and talk about it. 😂
Your videos comfort me, i really needed something like this and i feel better. Hope you're doing well
I recently found out your channel and loved it... I must confess I am marathoning your channel. So cozy and you English is awesome.
Keep making vídeos
DID SHE JUST SAY «KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE» VIBES😀 as in MY FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?! YUP, IM BUYING IT RN
Yeah I had to google a lot of words (English is not my first language) but I found the whole story so interesting and the chemistry between the characters is just chefs kiss!!!
the way I screamed when you started talking Dutch-
Loved this video! Hoping they’ll fix the vague or lack of descriptions that you mentioned because that would definitely drive crazy!
i just felt like PICK A SHIP MY GOD. the characters can’t all violently love and/or hate each other. it’s too confusing and it’s WAY too unrealistic
I'm still down to read this. I think it would be perfect for a break from schoolwork! Thanks for the awesome review.
You have such an artistic taste in watches. It's much more creative than wearing the same Apple Watch every day, but with a different strap.
i genuinely would die for a leonie gaming channel. also if you like stardew valley you'd probably love the harvest moon/story of seasons game series, the most recent one has been eating up allllll my free time
edit: i realize this comment is almost completely unrelated to this video but still lmao
I've enjoyed reading Olivie Blake's fanfiction so I'm interested in reading Atlas Six but I've been burned by tiktok recs before so I'm scared. Lol
I think if you enjoy her fanfic you’d enjoy it.
Do full videos on every dark academia book you have read? 😅please pretty please!!! Full videos!
I loved this video format 💖
you posting is now the highlight of my day
dude u just make me wanna read books even tho u dont even like the book * that * much so idk gorl. your influencer powers r strong
brb gonna put 'influencer' on my linkedin
You're so fun to watch! Your personality really shines through and makes your vids really enjoyable💗
This review was hilarious cause I loved the concept and the plot but the points made were so true!!
I literally love your booktube channel 💓💯
ahh thank you so much!
i just finished the book last week so this video is perfect!!
I clicked on this with utmost dread in my heart. I am not ready to hear hate on ta6. I read this book when it wasn't hyped so I wasn't disappointed
love you Leonie your videos are so calming, refreshing and fun
I would love a spoiler review of this too, to discussed it further, for sure.
The book is basically all about these 6 characters and their relationships. Everything else is second plan, that's why there is no descriptions of world and systems, because the focus is on characters. If you like it, you will love the book, if not - it might be a little boring.
monday was literally dark academia day
i really would like to read this book, thanks bookleo hahah
I love videos like these! Also the power outage made this vid ~extra cozy~
Need more videos like this.😭
I am so excited when I see a new video of yours come up,you are my favourite booktouber! Also, as a suggestion, would you consider filming a 'study with me' video? I am also doing my master's degree and such a video from you (which would definitely be very aesthetic) would accompany my study sessions👌🙏🍂💕
Perfect timing! I was just trying to decide if I should buy this book to read it/when should I read it.
The lighting conditions in this video are like the comedic side character.
“...my will to live” omg how relatable
omg i just bought this book & it will be my next read i’m so excited
I love the nice motivational poster about accepting that you're a fantasy book. XD
i started reading this today i’m not sure how i feel about it but we’ll see!
Update ?
I started reading it yesterday and I feel lukewarm
I literally screamed when I saw this video.😂 I finished this book last weekend and I loved it!❤ Although I do agree with your criticism, nothing really bothered me that much. Perhaps my expectations were not as high. I did wish there was more happening though, I wanted to read more about their lectures, more danger scenes etc. But this book had REALLY good characters, I loved them all and I also ship them all together.🤭 Overall I thought it was a really promising first book and I cannot wait till the second one comes out. I really want to know what happens to these characters.
As a sucker for classical music, I loved the Mozart Eine Kleine cameo lmfaooo
Omg when you had no electricity and internet that has happened to me several times in uni. Is awful. One time right before a calculus test haha
