Baldur's Gate 2 Solo level 9 Sorceror vs Twisted Rune

  • Obtaining the Staff of the Magi at level 9 which makes soloing the game easier (or cheesier) at lower levels. Bought the green scrolls and the scrolls of skull trap immediately upon exiting Irenicus' dungeon. Got the rogue stone from Mae'var's guild 1st floor in training area (knock and survive trap).
    Wands were identified by Imoen just before exiting Irenicus' abode after resting. Ran away from Suna Seni fight. Trap on TR door doesn't go off if you cast 'knock' on it. No other quests done (apart from getting 15K gold quest from Gaelan Bayle and accepting Renal's quest to expose Mae'var).
    Obviously it could have gone better and maybe I didn't need 4 skull trap scrolls but the main objective was to get the staff.

    Very well played; it's impressive to see one level 9 character stand up to all that. Normally this sort of fight would require level 15 or above group and even then it would be a struggle for the first time player. I was never in this place before because I never knew where to find the thing I needed to get in there :)

      Traps are Kinda OP in the Game XD, A Good Thief and Specially a Bounty Hunter Can Get Rid Of Most Tough Fights haha. I should Play More With Skull Traps, I Just Didn't Bother Much Since Traps Basically Saves You Spells and Scrolls.

    There's a web site, www.baldurdash.org/ that has "The Unexpurgated Journal Of Elmonster - Mage Of The Realms" where he details how to solo a mage. I've played his strategy many times, ten or more years ago, and have on several occasions wiped out the entire membership of the Twisted Rune, including Shyressa and Shangalar. The Lich nets a good amount of gold and killing Shyressa is just to make sure the world is less one vampire.

    I stumbled into the encounter by accident in Chapter 2, got my ass handed to me and decided to come back in Chapter 6 to get my revenge. I wish I had sealed the deal earlier, that staff is pretty sweet.

    Yes. You must have combat protections (such as stoneskin and shield) in order not to die, spell protections (spell imunity: abjuration) and, believe it or not, spell protection protections (like invisibility or spell shield) in order to avoid being dispelled. Then just haul your best attacks and watch your protections, getting ready to recast them if they go down. If you're a sorcerer, you'll usually nuke them before they know it. Demilichs are still a pain, though...

    Cristian:
    It is possible to defeat Kangaax as soon as you get the Staff of Rynn and Spell Immunity, but you don't get to memorize spell immunity until level 9 or 10, and you will NOT be able to beat him with a level 7 Spell Immunity cast from a scroll, because it absolutely will not last long enough to do enough damage to kill him. Even with the Staff of Rynn, you usually only do 2 or 3 damage per hit.
    I have beaten him on Core Rules with two level 11-ish characters, both having Spell Immunity memorized, by Rotating them and passing the Staffs of Magi and Rynn between them; having used summons to wear out his Lich form on spells before beating him up, and then using Spell Immunity afterwards.
    You can solo him if you have a well built character, but I doubt anyone does it below level 15 at least, unless they are playing on the easiest setting.
    With ToB installed, you can solo Kangaax with a level 18 mage using Spell Immunity and Energy Blades.

      Melf's minute meteors + spell immunity (Abjuration) + improved haste (Imp. haste ensures that you can kill him before you run out of memorized meteors)
      His lich form is far more difficult to beat than the demi lich form....Unfortunately there is no "non-cheese" way of defeating the one-trick pony.
      Or you could use pretty much any +4 or +5 weapon and a scroll of protection from magic to beat him.

    • @Medivhmen
      @Medivhmen 9 років тому

      I defeated Kangaxx on chapter 2 with level 12 characters . You need minute meteors , high supply of summon scrolls or wands + improved haste scrolls + mace of disruption +2 + carsomyr +5 that means Keldorn + Minsc for me . I didint use protection from undead or magic . First summon 2 skeleton before opening his tomb , then run away from his sight after opening it . After casting time stop he will waste his power word spells on skeletons . Then he will walk slowly towards your party . Dispell his protections on lich form ( use carsomyr ) then attack him with summons , melee and meteors . When he turns into demilich , pull back your party and let your summons swarm him first . As long as you can keep his aggro on summons + create new ones in time and attack him from behind with improved hasted melee characters it will die quickly . But of course you must be fast otherwise he will turn on your characters .

      Have you guys ever tried to cast spell protection scroll on Kangaxx? It removes all protection spells on Kangaxx, cast on you party too. You removed all type of spell troubles and effects for this battle. Then, just go and slay Kangaxx like an easy warrior mob. Since it cannot use any spell neither on him nor on your party, it becomes a cheese.

    It indeed does. However, it can be an extremely frustrating experience too, the first few times you try... And after you get used, it's just too easy and boring. To be honest, I gave up soloing entirely and try to keep a 3-character party at all times.

  • @zeusblue9441
    @zeusblue9441 9 років тому +6

    I find soloing (In BG2 ToB, mind you) to be easier than playing with a party....Your level rises much faster when you solo, particularly easy with the sorceror, which is in my opinion the best class in ToB.
    Only area that should cause trouble for a solo sorceror is the no-magic and wild magic rooms in watchers keep.

    • @influencija

      Zeus Blue I finished BG, BG2 and ToB many times. Never played a sorcerer. How is he different from a wizard (to play with, I know theoretical differences)

    • @zeusblue9441
      @zeusblue9441 9 років тому +2

      Antun K
      Three main differences:
      1) You have to plan ahead...not only does it matter which spells you pick, the order also matters. I have a sheet of spells with my preferred pick order, for example. Prepared for taking the long journey from Candlekeep to Melissan.
      2) You don't need scrolls: This is what makes solo'ing particularly easy. I had access to 7th and 8th level spells before i did the thief guild quests. This also means that you get spells that are rare in SoA quite easily, such as Chain contingency.
      Regarding BG tutu: You can pick spells that you cannot buy in shops....i had stoneskin, melf's minute meteors and minor sequencer in BG1
      3) They only need 9 intelligence.
      The way sorcerer's magic works also makes abusing project image and simulacrum even more powerful, since you get loads more of whatever spell is best in the situation. After level 18 you can pretty much beat every area just by casting project image, summon 5-6 planetars, kill the clone and have the planetars wipe out everything. Wizard's do not have as many of these spells readily available since you probably want to spend a few lvl9 slots on time stop, chain contingency and improved alacrity (Although i personally don't use time stop, it is weaker than most other high level options in ToB)
      As for the issue of sorcerers having a limited selection, it really is a non-issue. Only at the 6th spell level did i have problems choosing. At all other spell levels there are less truly powerful spells than you have picks.
      I think the Wild mage is equally powerful at high levels.
      I am currently playing BG enhanced edition, i am curious if they changed some of the more abusive mage spells.

      Zeus Blue Man thanx for the reply.
      When I was playing wizard as my main, I had to solo every boss in the game, was soo much fun. I was killing dragons with magic missiles only (after reducing their resistances to 0) because with improved alacrity i could have a whole sky full of missiles before he can react.
      In my opinion wizards are totally op if you get them robe of vecna, staff of the magi and amulet of power.
