  • Time Consuming Ep #28: This one is all about that blurred line between meter and subdivision. This line is easily crossed, and is very much influenced by the musicians background and preferences.

Dude, you've been at this format for only a year and you've got by far one of the best music channels on here. However you're doing it I wanna see more.

Man I have discovered your channel this week and I am blown away.
Between your analysis of Meshuggah, Clipping, Tigran Hamasyan, and now using Igorrr to explain music/rhythm theory :D (your music tastes are just incredible)
and then realizing you are one of the drummers in the Drip video from Tigran Hamasyan :o

Haha yeah that Igorrr video was absolutely nuts. Remembered it right as soon as I heard the song again. They did a really good job of being unsettling lol

Another great song with a 'single "swiped" sub-divided beat to give the illusion of 4/4' is "Digital Gerrymandering" by Intronaut. In that song they've taken away one of the 16 sixteenth notes in each bar, creating a 15/16 time signature, so it nets the same effect as the 9/8-4/4 one. I really appreciated your uncovering of the rhythmic truth of the Igorrr song - had never noticed that before! Such a wicked trick (and track!)

Oh man cool I'll check that track out!
And yeah, this Igorrr song was surprising for me as well. Suck a cool onneeee

Your first example (200bpm or 100bpm) reminds me of an argument in a ska group about reggae tempo, most argued that reggae has the chord skanks on the 2’s and 4’s with the snare on the 3, while a minority argued that reggae musicians counted the tempo at half the speed with the chord skanks on the &’s and the snare on 2’s and 4’s.
    I’m in the 1st camp.

Wow just found this channel! Nice videos :D:D It's a bit older but Genesis' Supper's Ready has a part at the end where the bass, drums and guitar are in 9 while the organ is soloing over it in 4. Really cool effect imho.
