Mhm! Not really sure if you know, but her hair is just multiple wigs bobby pinned to her hair in between scenes. But aside from that, the wig changes are still very impressive!
@@estesafriendofm1ne yeah sure! So whenever you see anya with a hairstyle, its a wig. Since she has many different styles throughout the show, and since there is not enough time between each scene to make style her hair, she uses wigs. The wigs get bobby pinned and secured to her hair like most wigs do. Using wigs makes it easier to switch up her style during quick changes. Hope this helps?:)
As someone who lives far far far away from broadway, I am deeply glad I found this this! Anastasia has been one of my favourite animations in forever, and since I’ve found out there was a play, I’ve been dreaming to watch it. Thank you so so so much for it! So beautiful 🖤
11:50 until now I noticed the soviet slime was trying to invite her to drink tea and pretty much liked the duchess slime, he is so awkward is kind of cute
This was great but I was kinda disappointed I didn't get the same unique chemistry Dmitri and Anya had from the original movie. I was sad they took out the sideplot that he was the kitchen boy who saved her or the necklace that unlocks the music box or that part he said "princesses don't marry kitchen boys", like come on that line was so iconic. 😭
Because in this version they're following the more realistic fact of the tragedy that all Romanovs were all died in Ypatiev House and since this version try to follow that fact instead, Anastasia can't be saved by kitchen boy. I think when it was written in the 90s, it was still disputed whether Anastasia survive or not so they turned it into fairytale-ish in the cartoon version but now when it's all clear and the real Anastasia remains have been identified and is now buried with her family in St. Petersburg, maybe it's now weird to make it too fictional(?) I think them changing this into more historical fiction is interesting but on the other hand the plot become a bit messy.

I don’t know how I managed to get through half of this blissfully unaware before I realized it would be utter *hell* to perform under those lights wearing so many layers
So, I was wondering how Anastasia lost her memory in this version as she didn't fall from a train like she did in the movie and I might have figured it out. So, Anastasia and her sisters had jewels sewn into their corsets that protected them from the bullets. It's likely that the bullet's force was enough to knock Anya back and to hit her head, knocking her out and causing the memory loss. Then they put them all in a wagon or something and she accidentally slid out unknowingly and that's how she was found by the side of the road. It's all I could think of that could have happened
(Edited) Anastasia in this version was 17 years old when her whole family was killed (probably to keep it historically accurate), but in the story, which the musical is based on (animated movie) she was 8. The massacre was enough of traumatic experience to prevent her personality to integrate fully, which leads me to believe she has OSDD-1a. The trauma has to take place before the age 7-9 for the person to develop OSDD/DID. She didn't have to be hit, she just had to witness it. It actually makes a lot of sense. She has PTSD symptoms, being hypervigilant, untrusting and for example throwing herself onto the ground when car made a loud noise (thinking it was gunshot). She's seen experiencing dissociative trance, looking into the distance and feeling as if she was called by her past. We actually see Anastasia switch between her younger self and older self, especially when Dimitri and Pavlov are teaching her about her past - she acts like a young girl in few moments, and yet she doesn't fully believes she's actually the princess until she gets the memories back (probably by fusing with her younger self unknowingly, which is a thing that happens). And it should be pretty obvious to her that she's the Anastasia, because she remembers details better than they do and seems to almost know certain things as if it was her second nature. Doubting oneself is very common thing among patients with OSDD/DID. Being dissociated from her traumatic memories helped her to be more productive and to survive in a very unstable environment. When she's describing her past, we hear about her going through different jobs and working for any scraps to somehow get by, which wouldn't be possible if she was carrying the weight of remembering her trauma. The price for repressing memories is paid by having flashback, night terrors and being in constant state of stress and survival, which are also PTSD symptoms. Patients with OSDD/DID are usually high-functioning members of society, as this disorder is built to be invisible. And also the fusing part - this is actually also extremely well done. By moving out of Russia, trusting her gut, following "the truth of her dreams" and building a healthy and safe relationship with Dimitri she's actually getting out of dangerous environment and healing. Amnesiac barriers were no longer necessary, so while sharing an intimate moment with Dimitri she got her memories back. And it also makes sense why in the end she chose Dimitri over her Nana - he was the one who made her feel safe. Out of every piece of media that exists on OSDD / DID (which are highly bittersweet and at times more of "lesser evil" than doing any good and "spreading awareness" - looking at you Split), I think this musical especially is an almost perfect representation of what it is like to live with a dissociative disorder, without even calling it that. I really don't know if anybody did any research when writing this character, but my god is it well done.
@@naliroka7998 you have a good point, I just guessed that she was hit in the head because that's what records said really happened and that she attempted to play dead but Maria screamed
The musical is based on the animated movie and she's 8 there. So I guess, in the musical, they wanted to keep it historically accurate (as Anastasia died while being 17 years old), while still telling the story that is familiar to us, keeping the key elements of Anastasia-experience. I still think it's an awesome representation, although yeah, to develop OSDD/DID the trauma would have to take place before the age of 7-9.

Just noticed there are multiple coincidences/parallels between Anastasia and Moulin Rouge: -Caroline O’Connor who plays Lily, the Queen’s assistant, was the actress who played Nini in the original 2001 film Moulin Rouge (the lead can can dancer who dances to Roxanne) -Both Anastasia and Moulin Rouge are at least partially set in Paris -The Broadway production of Anastasia shows the real life Moulin Rouge location and windmill on the backdrop screen during “Paris Holds the Key to Your Heart” -Dmitry then sings “…and then, come what may” which was changed from the original Anastasia film for the Broadway production, and “Come What May” is one of the leading songs from Moulin Rouge, both film and musical -Derek Klena who plays Dmitry is the current Christian in Moulin Rouge on Broadway

I saw this in New York back in 2018 but Ramin and Derek were no longer apart of the company, glad I have this wonderful slime tutorial to still enjoy their performance ;)
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I liked Gleb more than Dmitri in this version. In the animated film, you can see Dmitri's motivation change as he falls for Anya, and he is ill at ease when he discovers she is actually the Grand Duchess Anastasia. He keeps this to himself because he wants what's best for her, i.e. making sure she finds her family, but knows that reuniting her with the Dowager means giving her up forever. In this musical, they remove some of that inner turmoil by changing his lines in Paris Holds the Key to Your Heart and having them discover the truth together. He does leave without the reward, but now he never returns to Anya out of his own volition (and incidentally save her from Rasputin). It is Anya who decides to seek him out, to which he reacts rather petulantly (don't acknowledge me if you ever see me/I don't want to love you) then accepts her kiss without much hesitation afterwards. I mean, I guess the underlying feelings are still there, but are far more watered down than in the film. Gleb on the other hand has clear conflict. He wants to be the son who would prove his father's cruel involvement in the revolution was justified. He also wants to be with this girl whose true identity puts them at political odds and endangers both of them (he is ordered to kill her, or else his life or position is presumably on the line.) Furthermore, Gleb essentially has an "I want" moment like Anya and the Dowager, while Dmitri only really has an "I am" moment. (I'm not counting the hope for riches - because that's not really what Dmitri wants at the end of the day.) He basically only expresses that he is a Russian street rat who's quick on his feet, that he is still that awestruck little boy, and that he has come to care for Anya. Still, his attraction is not nearly as strong as Anya's desire for belonging, or the Dowager's desperation and sorrow, or Gleb's fear of becoming a traitor (to his family, his heart, or his country). Thus, Gleb reads more like a protagonist while Dmitri reads more like a villain although their roles are supposed to be reversed... Like, Gleb allows her to live her life despite his entire upbringing going against this, but Dmitri is taking her away from everything she's wanted her whole life because they have a crush, I guess?? At least in the film it doesn't feel so impulsive a decision, and it's implied Anastasia will continue to see her grandmother after she elopes. Also, I find it cute how Gleb meets Anya as a skittish sweeper and is so immediately taken by her, while Dmitri was initially drawn to her when she being paraded around as a princess. Gleb's encounter seems more authentic in comparison. I don't know. Dmitri is one of my favorite animated characters. I really loved the banter between Dmitri and Anya in the film. They're so hilarious, so flawed, yet so perfect. I love their chemistry together. Here, I really felt for Gleb, and found the conflict with Anastasia and it's conclusion to be very compelling - to the point where it took some of the limelight away from the main romance. Enjoyed the musical nonetheless, along with the rest of the changes to the story and dialogue. The cast did a brilliant job capturing the charm of the original.
I like your insight! I see some part of it differently though - the fact Dimitry falls for Anya after some time of her learning, after a dance and interactions is better for me than Gleb's reaction. Dimitry falls for the girl, with her looks, grace, fears and stubborness, whereas Gleb only gets to see she's beautiful. He notices that under ragged clothes and fear, but still, he sees a pretty subject, not an equal.
@@eq4005 I really like your take on falling in love vs falling into an obsession. Again, I just felt that Gleb's story was more compelling than Dmitri's here, not necessarily that he was the better match for Anya. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my thoughts :)
Just wanna say: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I love Dmitry in the movie, here… UGH🙄 And Gleb is such an interesting character. True, one can say he is obsessed with Anya, think they only have like… 3 interactions, so yeah, He is a simp easily in love, but these interactions were pretty more interesting than with Dmitry, so… Screw it, I ship them!😤 Update: Also, 1. Gleb decides to betray his entire regime, ideals and legacy for « Just a girl who is pretty ». I think that even if it could have been better developped… Yeah. And 2. Obsessed or not, besides his flirting when they met, he never ever hoped ending up with her in the end. He could have been the villains crush trope like « If i can’t have you, no one will » And kill her, but no. So… Yeah…
I love this insight, but personally I thought he was already taken by her during In My Dreams. Maybe that is just Derek slightly breaking character, but the fascination on Dimitri's face literally whenever Anya sings (especially in In My Dreams) kinda is my way of like "damn this dude is in love" whereas with Gleb it was at first, attraction, then, obsession.

I also love whenever in the musical he belts “anya” I have no idea why.) Also if none of you have watched you should watch the royal misfits (Anastasia bts) it’s so funny and acually made me like this even more than I already did.
There are a ton problems with the historicity of this show (but I still love it ofc): 1. Maria Feodorovna (Nana) and Anastasia weren’t that close. A better person would’ve been Nikolai’s sister, Olga, who was close to Anastasia and all of her sisters (ironically, she was also the one who would take them to see Maria every week or so) 2. If this was the 1903 winter ball, Alexei wouldn’t have even been born yet (he was born 1904). 3. Alexandra’s health was beyond her - around this time (due to her poor health as a child), she began becoming reliant on a wheelchair. 4. The bed - Anastasia nor any of her siblings slept in Royal beds of this accord - they all slept on military cots without pillows. 5. “The Tsar requests the first dance” Nikolai would never refer himself to that title - Peter the Great (one of his ancestors) declared himself Emperor, therefore making him to be known as the Emperor. 6. 1917 in the winter ball - again, this is supposed to be the 1903 ball. Plus, the family was under house arrest and exiled around this time too. 7. “The Princess Anastasia” would be an incorrect statement. While that is the rough English translation, she would’ve been referred to more likely as “Duchess Anastasia” or “Grand Duchess Anastasia” 8. Maria Feodorovna did NOT go to Paris - she spent her time flip flopped between continental Europe (her native Denmark and the United Kingdom, where her sister, Alexandra, lived as the Dowager Queen of the UK) and Russia. After the Revolution, she was exiled from Russia and spent the last decade of her life in Denmark. 9. The opera scene and reunion never happened - Anna Anderson never met Maria Feodorovna, but she did meet some of Maria’s relatives, including her little brother, Valdemar, and some of the exiled Romanovs. 10. The music box - Anastasia did have a music box, but it was silver and had a ballerina, not a gold one with her parents. 11. The red dress - not grand duchess attire. She would probably be wearing something white and more body formed (look at Tatiana’s court dress online and you’ll see what I mean).
Y’all know when dimitri says that he bowed to someone once? Ok, so I just figured out that the line in Crowd of Thousands when Anya says “And then, he bowed” is talking about when dimitri bowed to her and he says that he bowed to her here: 26:50
The community theater I'm in is doing this show in August! I watch this video at least once a day to study it while I'm at work. I'm really grateful it's here.
the best anastasia slime show ever i mean they did the recording very good and the show they made the movie soo much more realistic and sad sometimes I LOVE IT
I dearly love this story (movie and musical), but I've really grown to dislike the ending. Why would Anastasia have to choose between Dimitri and her grandmother? Are we supposed to forget the part where her family was murdered and her country taken over? She's not really a grand duchess anymore; she would just be called that out of respect. Or are we supposed to think of the ending as her choosing between living happily as a nobody and fighting to become Empress of Russia? If the problem is that the people wouldn't accept her marrying a commoner, we have our answer in "Count" Vlad. Clearly, being in the nobility is easy to fake... I mean, you can't just add songs like "In My Dreams" and "Close the Door", and expect me to believe that Anastasia would immediately leave her grandmother forever after finally being reunited with her.
Russia would keep trying to murder her if she stayed with her grandmother or acknowledged her birthright. Her grandmother wasn't really associated with Russia but she was exiled from Russia and would have been killed if she stepped foot in the Soviet Union. Anastasia on the other hand could topple the whole Soviet Union by being alive. Most romanovs went into hiding after the assassinations (one even died alone in Australia and no one knew who they were until their mother found out. She was living in Canada I believe.). Most died in obscurity. You have to remember. Stalin was worse than Mustach man (don't want the video to disappear so won't use the name). He killed thousands more through pure starvation and gulags and assassinations. This Broadway even mentions the walls having ears which was a mild reality. It was worse. so what's to stop him from killing the last heir of the old Russian ruling dynasty? The Romanov bodies were found during the Soviet era (60s I believe) but they kept the info under wraps to preserve their bodies and protect them from being destroyed by the soviets that were still in control until the 90s. This is why they were only "found" in the early 2000s. The USSR was an awful existence for many people especially native people who weren't Russian. The hodomor was to starve the Ukrainians to death. The Belarusians and Estonia (plus others) have been under occupation from Stalin's and the tsars Russia. Destroying their culture and language. So I think it would have been impossible for her to stay with her grandmother. Sorry for this long message. I am passionate about this movie because it feels like the only link I have to my heritage. My father and his family left the USSR and they are all a bit emotionally stunted compared to relatives I have found who left just as Stalin was taking power. The trauma is likely generational.
@@Biancaleigh693 That is a very good explanation. Thank you for sharing! I begrudgingly admit that you're right. I think the danger you're talking about is hinted at in the musical, but it would be nice if it were made a little more clear.
@@Narnianchick I fully agree it should be made clearer. I had family murdered by Stalin for just being a jewller (rumoured to be one for the tsar though. Don't know what happened to his twin sister). It's really depressing but this nor the movie really says the truth. Soviet Russia hates anyone rich or who doesn't work. One more thing. After ww2. Any Jews who were captured by the nazis were considered to be working with the enemy and were thrown in the gulag when rescued. Stalin was an absolute piece of shit just like the current wannabe Stalin. I am happy you understood where I was coming from and to be fair. If I didn't know what Russia was like. I would have had the same opinion as you.

@@DefNotLexie can you elaborate more in this? im very interested but a little confused.

DIMITRI is charming but it was Gleb's character that won me over. His compexity
Yea
@@christiannachel2710 100% I was in AWE
This was great but I was kinda disappointed I didn't get the same unique chemistry Dmitri and Anya had from the original movie. I was sad they took out the sideplot that he was the kitchen boy who saved her or the necklace that unlocks the music box or that part he said "princesses don't marry kitchen boys", like come on that line was so iconic. 😭
Fully agree!
Yeah, their relationship is so rushed and vapid in this.
Petersburg, maybe it's now weird to make it too fictional(?) I think them changing this into more historical fiction is interesting but on the other hand the plot become a bit messy.
actually the musical more followed the original book

Oh never mind, I just realised. 😂
Bro tell me why this had me crying laughing
(Edited)
Anastasia in this version was 17 years old when her whole family was killed (probably to keep it historically accurate), but in the story, which the musical is based on (animated movie) she was 8.
@@naliroka7998 she’s 17 when her family are killed in this. That’s why the actors switch during the dance number
@@newsiesgirl6307 Fuck you're right, I just checked the wikipedia. Well, whole analysis goes to trash. But thank you for being watchful!

Just noticed there are multiple coincidences/parallels between Anastasia and Moulin Rouge:
-Caroline O’Connor who plays Lily, the Queen’s assistant, was the actress who played Nini in the original 2001 film Moulin Rouge (the lead can can dancer who dances to Roxanne)
-Both Anastasia and Moulin Rouge are at least partially set in Paris
-The Broadway production of Anastasia shows the real life Moulin Rouge location and windmill on the backdrop screen during “Paris Holds the Key to Your Heart”
-Dmitry then sings “…and then, come what may” which was changed from the original Anastasia film for the Broadway production, and “Come What May” is one of the leading songs from Moulin Rouge, both film and musical
-Derek Klena who plays Dmitry is the current Christian in Moulin Rouge on Broadway

My intrusive thoughts: Nana orchestrated the Romanov killings. She made the guards keep Ana alive because that’s “Her favorite”
Ramin is always just perfect
Such a great cast in a severely underrated show. Great recording!
@@sfaira4072 I feel like with Dimitri it was him slowly falling in love and with Gleb it was him slowly falling into obsession
True, one can say he is obsessed with Anya, think they only have like… 3 interactions, so yeah, He is a simp easily in love, but these interactions were pretty more interesting than with Dmitry, so… Screw it, I ship them!😤
Update: Also, 1.
Maybe that is just Derek slightly breaking character, but the fascination on Dimitri's face literally whenever Anya sings (especially in In My Dreams) kinda is my way of like "damn this dude is in love" whereas with Gleb it was at first, attraction, then, obsession.
quartet at the ballet is the best song ever

There are a ton problems with the historicity of this show (but I still love it ofc):
1. Maria Feodorovna (Nana) and Anastasia weren’t that close. A better person would’ve been Nikolai’s sister, Olga, who was close to Anastasia and all of her sisters (ironically, she was also the one who would take them to see Maria every week or so)
While that is the rough English translation, she would’ve been referred to more likely as “Duchess Anastasia” or “Grand Duchess Anastasia”
The historical accuracy of Hamilton is also questioned but it's doing pretty well, don'tcha think?

This is the best quality Anastasia I’ve seen! Thanks!
@@Biancaleigh693 I'm so sorry for what your family has been through. Thank you, again, for adding some clarification to the story!
