I was so very lucky to be at that VIP/meet & greet show in Toronto - met you and Carole & James & Kootch & Kate....it's still one of the highlights of my life nearly 14 years later! Now I've been watching your you tube channel & see that you are one heck of a great guy! Thankyou for all these memories! :)))
I have played the bass for 60 years now and James Jamerson in the Motor City and Lee Sklar in LA- that's literally all you need to know about playing the bass- period.
Hi Lee, I subscribed here 100,000 people ago and you have become a daily habit I really look forward to. I feel so fortunate that you are willing to spend time , share your talent and bring stories. your career has largely been the soundtrack of my life. I am a retired theatre teacher, I love all the arts, but I have always felt that music is the single most powerful art form because you can hear two or three notes of a song and immediately memories and emotions start flooding in. In a troubling time, you have been kind enough to bring back so many great times and memories. Big fan, cheers to you!
This needs to be on a plaque above the door of Lee’s Club House commemorating it’s origins! And thank you for your dedication to the arts. It breaks my heart when school funding cuts target the arts-they’re an essential building block of a solid education.
Winter here in NZ so I grabbed a couple of Hoodies.... The size range goes up to 5xl which is great for those of us whose 6 pack has turned into a keg.
I forgot what a sophisticated arrangement this had. The key changes are seamless. Wonderful performance. Thank God you all decided NOT to rest on your laurels!
Lee, back in "the day" when we heard you were coming to the studio the room would always light up knowing your presence and talent would arrive, now I am seeing that happen worldwide, you deserve every bit of it while you continue to make the world smile in many ways. And what a groove !
Mr. Sklar, you are a once in a generation talent! Thank you for sharing that incredible talent with the world throughout your illustrious career and as a Goffin, I can't thank you enough for your incredibly kind words about my cousin, Gerry! Hearing you acknowledge Gerry's contributions was an unexpected bonus to today's video! We Goffins remain so proud of his incredible (and often overlooked) contributions to the majestic "tapestry" that is Popular Music! Thanks again!
A great Goffin-King song getting the James Taylor treatment, with great musicians, a great performance and a great memory - it's like having a fine family meal with people you love. I think I'll just sit here and savour it a while longer.
Those key changes are sheer perfection. Flawless. I'm saving this video for reference of "How it's done" for reference in my own work. I mean just WOW!!
Thanks Mr. Lee. Carol, and JT are touchstones for me.. Lately where I work I here in Miami (parks), I tell people " Hey - you people should wear a mask if you care about infrastructure." Then, I pause for a few seconds, and add .... "and if you care about me."
Grazie Leland!!!! it's a joy listen to yours stories, and of course listen to your playing!!! I am very lucky! I saw you live here in Italy two times: one with JT and one with TOTO!!! fantastic nights!!!
First of all, thank you so much for doing these. Listening is just like one of my favorite things about getting a new album: reading the liner notes. I really enjoy all the back notes and stories. I got tickets for the TRT concert in Rosemont, IL through a presale available through the James Taylor website and we ended up with 4th row seats right on the aisle the whole band used to get to and from the stage in the middle of the arena as you described. I have seen James and Carol at least 5 times over my many years - their music speaks to me and I notice you closing your eyes as you play as you are feeling it too! I remember going to see JT at Alpine Valley in WI while he was on tour supporting the Flag album. If I recall you were playing a bass that looked like it was carved out of wood and had an eagle’s head carved. The show was fantastic. I saw The Section playing in concert with several other artists over the years and always appreciated the musicianship. I recently turned a nephew playing jazz trumpet in NYC on to The Section! I’m glad you’re still playing. Thanks again for doing these videos.
Thanks, again, for sharing your wonderful music and experiences with us! Please keep reminding us to wear MASKS! I am in one of the hardest hit states & still I see many people without them! I cut off the bottom of an old pair of jeans, tied rubber bands around each side & had one in a few minutes... free. Denim is one of the best materials to use & double denim, like mine is even better. So, please, people, wear a mask!!!
Hi Lee...just listened to a recording from a Dublin James Taylor gig from 1986 that I was at!..only received it today...it brought back such great memories of a amazing and funny gig😁😁..thank you!
I've been patiently waiting for this song. I remember seeing the Troubadour documentary and thinking 'what a marvelously inventive way to combine those two versions.' But this song means a lot more to me than that. I've always considered JT's recorded version of 'Up On The Roof' to be the most powerful track I have ever heard. It affects me emotionally and very profoundly. Any time it comes on the radio or on my iPhone's random playlist in the car, the whole world disappears while I listen carefully to every nuance and note choice you made on that track. The way you and Russ develop the pacing and tension as the song builds to it's finalé have no equal. I've listened to it hundreds of times, and I'm in tears when it ends, every single time. There's nothing hurried or forced, no obvious pyrotechnics, just incredibly solid and grounded playing that goes off like a volcano erupting in slow motion in my mind. As a bass player, it never fails to humble and inspire me, and I've always wanted to thank you for the gift that I get whenever I hear it.
First of all, this is GOLD: Mr. Sklar, you are truly a special person and artist and the musical experiences you had throughout the years are...well, there are no words to describe them. Secondly, I wanted to throw out there a little addendum to your very apropos shoutout: this goes out to all MENTAL health providers -especially those who work in psychiatric hospitals (like me)- who never stopped working throughout the pandemic, are first responders, put their lives at risk on a daily basis, and are rarely recognized (and I am not referring specifically to you, Mr. Sklar, who are wonderful and hopefully will continue doing what you are doing, but pretty much to everybody). Obviously, I do realize that there are WAY more important things we have to worry about nowadays and that all those who are usually mentioned in shoutouts ABSOLUTELY do deserve it, but still, if you will allow me a moment of good old fashioned human pride, we exist too, and it would be nice to receive some encouragement as well... Rant over. :) Thank you for your time and patience!
Hey Lee! My wife and I came to the Toronto show of that tour and had one of the VIP tables. I remember that Carole had a cold and so didn’t come to the meet and greet but I did meet James (thrill of a lifetime) Kootch and Kate Markowitz (big fan of hers). You were in the room but we didn’t meet. I was amazed how long your sound check was. I always thought you’d do a couple of tunes and that was it but you guys did 45 minutes it seemed. Anyway, awesome gig and great memory! 😀👍
Lee, thank you SO much for all the joy you've given us over the years!...and for allowing us to relive these great memories with you. I love watching these vlogs every day.
Lee - I literally just learned your original version of this last week, in F - now I have to learn it all over again with a key change! What a bass line, absolutely love every note of it, your licks at the end here just now made me laugh out loud with their brilliance, I started clapping furiously screaming "bravo, bravo, bravo". Thanks so much.
“Lee’s Music Lounge” presents JT and Carol King!!!! Enjoy everyone. Music is the only reason what brings me back to this” Music Oasis “ everyday. And also Lee’s stories behind the songs. What a great Storyteller. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✌🏻👍🏻🎼🎶🎵🎼😷✌🏻
I am so enjoying listening to you share your tales of recording and touring. You have played on so many recordings that have been important to me in my life. And much more. Thank you for sharing . And during this time period of Covid and worldly craziness...you just make me feel calm and happy. Just thank you very much.
I like the modulations. It’s like a medley of the same song. As an acoustic guitarist/singer I cut my teeth on JT songs so it’s a such great experience to watch you play these songs.
I was at the Charlotte NC TRT show in 2010. Our seats were first row beyond the VIP seats. The VIP section was very cool, gave it a real night club vibe. It was a fantastic show!!! If my memory serves me correctly you played a Blue Dingwall that night.
Tears of joy run down my face, the sheer brilliance of the arrangement, on top of the song itself. I'd run up to ya and give you a big ol' hug Leland. Thank you so much for sharing! And to the composers! Just so good.
I have a big smile on my face and tear in my eye , what a huge joy to listen to brought back old feelings listening to that group when you were first together .. thank you for sharing this with us !!!
I believe you have enough songs and stories to out last the virus..Keep going Lee..There's no stopping you now..Cheers..And thanks for the mask reminder..Your voice helps..
Thank you LS for blessing our ears with the story and the music. 'Up on the Roof' is one of my dad's favourite songs and certainly one of mine too! Blessings from India. Cheers!
Another wonderful story - thanks so much for sharing. You have so much history - I could listen all day. Very special and a privilege. It's time one of our Universities bestowed an honorary doctorate on you. Dr. Leland Sklar - sounds just right!
I’m not ashamed to admit that I sob every time I hear this song. Lee, thanks for starting your channel. I look forward to your daily videos, your insights and your stories!
Another wonderful voyage of discovery! thank you Lee. I am thinking of a compass rose with true north replaced by LS because this is how I have come to navigate the world of music. thanks again Lee.
If you do not have Carole King - The Carnegie Hall Concert - June 18, 1971, you owe it to yourself to have this live concert in your collection. Excellent performance and a great live recording. Five out of five stars from me.
After seeing this I had to go find a clip of the Kennedy Center performance. Wow, Lee! You guys were so in the pocket that, on Smiling Face, even the white folk were clapping on two and four 😎
Leland, thanks so much for doing these daily videos. My wife and I look forward to them every day (She is a teacher by the way and appreciated your shout out today). Also, I was always curious why Phil Collins would introduce you as the incomparable Leland Sklar...now I know! Wow! You have had such a fascinating career. Thanks so much for sharing it with all of us!
I am filled with much emotion each time Leland speaks about the 'old days,' playing and recording with James, Carole and the Section. I loved the Troubadour album/dvd for the same reasons Leland stated - it was like going home ❤.
I was at the concert at Blossom, I remember it like it was yesterday. I’ve been a fan of JT and Leland ever since. By the way, I love the arrangement of Up on the Roof and how it transitions between the two keys! I love your videos, keep em coming and stay healthy!
Mr Sklar congratulations from Blumemau south of Brazil. I had already seen several shows with your participation but, I must confess that I became your fan, every day I watch some videos of you. It is very good to appreciate you playing. God bless you, your talent and your family. Keep exuding good taste and talent for all of us !!!
My wife and I saw you guys at Madison Sq Garden on that tour ( flew from Tx. to be there /-have followed you and all of them through all these years. -my wife was in tears of joy when Carol started playing w James and you guys. -just such amazing talent -and such beautiful people too. Thanks for sharing your stories. Wishing you all the best.
What I really like about this version is that the key change transitions that you mention are so seamless that I wouldn't have really noticed them while listening, if you hadn't mentioned them. That speaks to the quality of the musicians involved. Had I been playing, I would have really noticed them, but as a listener, they just flowed!
Leland, Up on the Roof was the first song I learned on guitar when I was a youngster taking lessons at Schiff School of Music in Brooklyn, NY. Thanks for making the video and keep up the good work! I love your playing! I’ve seen you play several times at Phil Collins shows.
I love the modulations between Carole and James’ vocals, back and forth, seamless, smooth, building to the duo ending. Great back story. Special. Thank you for sharing.
Meticulously tasty phrasing! This was my very favorite bass line/run from that era. One of the few that could literally anchor a pure emotional bottom.
I watched four ads today while seeing your video, a price I would pay gladly. I don't agree with the ads or their placement but there you are. Thanks for everything Lee.
Thank you again miss the score for bringing great ear candy to your fans I have loved that song for the longest time it's just a great song no matter who does it I love the subtle way the key changes between Carroll and James's voices and your bass playing is adequate LOL. I wish more people would take heed to your messages I am one of those people who don't think I need to wear a mask for myself I have had the virus and it was not pleasant when I go out in public I wear the mask because it keeps everybody else come and there is way too much unrest these days you are a great man mr. Sklar please never worry about preaching to the choir you do it so well all my respect as a player and a human to you
Another "Gem" Lee....and also what you said about behavior in these COVID times. We're hoping that you guys can figure it out in the US so we can all get on with it!...
Lee, I was st the last show of the tour in Anaheim. Such a thrill to see you all together. Thank you for doing these videos. PS, I got a great picture of you that night
It strikes me that your prodigious ability to put up these wonderful recollections as well as your bass playing is what you have been doing these many years. I’ve seen you live countless times (worked security on ROE tour) and so appreciate the gift of what you giving us here... So in short thanks Lee you are a national treasure
I've seen every show that James has done in Australia and the Troubadour Tour was very special. Your story telling of how that came about has added extra meaning to that, Lee. I love your music and playing but your story telling is a class above any music-related content on youtube. When I recount in future years the things that were positive about the COVID 19 pandemic, your videos will be at the top of the list. Thank you!
Thought I’d better get here early “just in case” your video gets taken down again. I’m a huge Carole King fan. Read her autobiography TWICE. I love her. I love J T. I love you, Lee! I’m the happiest girl in the whole USA. ~ Lori ~
Thank you! DVD of that event is superb and worth getting . Also many UA-cam videos from around the world of the tour. Enjoy seeing the differences in performances. You guys can do it one more time..It would stil be one of the great musical events! Troubadour...The Encore!
Every once in awhile PBS will show the concert James Taylor and Carol King ( with Peter Asher in the audience) did at the Troubadour. I watch it just so I can hear " Carolina in My Mind" . Doesn't get much better then that.😉
I saw you guys at the San Jose stop on that tour. I was telling my lovely, "that's Leland Sklar on the bass!" Went to the show expecting to see JT and CK, didn't realize I would be seeing you and DK and many of the original musicians from those seminal albums that meant so much to me back in the day. I sit here at my computer with my guitar and play along with many of your videos, thanks for all the enjoyment.
I was there on that tour. I got some awesome photos of that show. It was the best concert I've attended in several years. I was in row # 2 Interesting back story on the key change for Carole and James. I always got a kick when James would introduce Lee as behind the Shroud of Turin.. referring to the massive beard.. Thanks so much Lee for everything you do and say at these challenging times..
Beautiful sentiments about a wonderful song that brings back a lot of memories for me. Even if you didn't have a roof to go up to, this song put you on that roof that Carol King was singing about. Additionally, not sure what you did with your setup Leland but the bass tone was excellent on this video!
You are a true master of your instrument Lee, On your recommendation I looked up the JT Blossom show, what a band! And the rendition of 'Honey don't leave LA' is truly awesome..
Saw Sheryl Crow at Newport Folk Festival last year and she brought James out as a special guest to sing one of her songs with her. Great special moment!❤️
Lee, I have watched the UA-cam version of that show at The Troubadour so many times. It never fails to bring me to a special place of calm. Having all of you guys together made it extra special. I watch the show straight through, with the exception of "Fire And Rain". Still can't quite make it all the way through that tune without breaking-down. Good stuff - the very BEST stuff!
What a beautiful song! Thank you so much Mr. Sklar! My father’s funeral will be on Thursday this week. So it was so nice to start this hard week with such a nice song... Love the puristic way you play the bass on that song.
I am sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad last month. Sending positive thoughts your way, probably across many miles. P.S. His funeral was on a Thursday too. It was an outdoor graveside service. We all wore masks. It was very surreal. Anyway, my condolences to you and your family.
What a song just WONDERFUL. Great bass line thank you. 🎼🤗
One of my favorite songs. I could watch the Troubadour show on an endless loop.
I have played the bass for 60 years now and James Jamerson in the Motor City and Lee Sklar in LA- that's literally all you need to know about playing the bass- period.
i bought my first bass in 82.. im 53 now ☝️
Wow. Thanks for the trip back in time.
Dan Rae,
I loved your post because I relate to it so strongly!
Well said
This needs to be on a plaque above the door of Lee’s Club House commemorating it’s origins! And thank you for your dedication to the arts. It breaks my heart when school funding cuts target the arts-they’re an essential building block of a solid education.
Ditto Dan👍
So beautiful! So much talent. Brings tears to my eyes.
Great to relive one of the greatest live shows of all time.
Watch it, in full, once or twice a week and always find it uplifting. Truly great talents.
Tapestry was, and still is, a masterpiece! Loved what you did with the VIP section, you sir are always a class act!
Watching this video inspired my husband and I to watch the Troubadour concert! Heartwarming, joyful and exquisite! As always, thanks! ☮️💟🎵🎶😷😷
I want a coffe cup that says, "If you don't know Leland Sklar, you don't know crap!"
Ahahaha BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT!!!
Add Phil Collins 😊
A little harsh however it is correct I would buy two love that Mr. Sklar
Winter here in NZ so I grabbed a couple of Hoodies.... The size range goes up to 5xl which is great for those of us whose 6 pack has turned into a keg.

'Up On The Roof' and 'Its Too Late' on The Troubadour album are just stellar. Oh hell, so is the rest of the show too!
Loved those seamless key changes. 👍🏻😎
Lee, when I heard Carole sing the first line of "Up On The Roof" while watching this video, my eyes welled up with tears. You got me buddy! :-)
Thank you all for your help on our Global Family survive!!!!

Sitting here in Western North Carolina watching baseball and I just turned it off. Chill bumps, just WOW! FREAKING WOW! Thank you sir
I was lucky enough to be at the original shows at The Troubadour. Didn't know how good we had it back then.
Saw the Troubador show in Sydney - best concert ever. Carole was so excited. You were all great.
Leland, Up on the Roof was the first song I learned on guitar when I was a youngster taking lessons at Schiff School of Music in Brooklyn, NY. Thanks for making the video and keep up the good work! I love your playing! I’ve seen you play several times at Phil Collins shows.
Loved all of the behind the scenes stories and wonderful playing Leland!!! Peace to you my friend and fellow low-ender!!!
What a phenomenal song! One of my all time favorite songs....great performances and great video Lee!
I love the modulations between Carole and James’ vocals, back and forth, seamless, smooth, building to the duo ending. Great back story. Special. Thank you for sharing.
That's one of my all time favorite tunes! Thanks Lee!!!
Great stories. Have fun in the garden. Get out the scissors.
I wish this tune could go on forever 🙏🏼
Just watched this again. Thank you Lee for sharing this so fully and sweetly.
Love these original simple basic songs back from the beginning. :)
Lee, I was st the last show of the tour in Anaheim. Such a thrill to see you all together. Thank you for doing these videos.
PS, I got a great picture of you that night
I was at the MSG show. What a dream come true to see all y'all together playing that music. It was awesome in every way.
Thank you!
Tapestry - a great classic - one of the best albums of all time.
Thought I’d better get here early “just in case” your video gets taken down again. I’m a huge Carole King fan. Read her autobiography TWICE. I love her. I love J T. I love you, Lee!
I’m the happiest girl in the whole USA.

Thank you Mr. Lee for playing for us. Looking forward for the next vid.
This channel has been the silver lining to a global pandemic. Thank you, Lee, for the music, stories and the much-needed ray of light.
Beautiful sentiments about a wonderful song that brings back a lot of memories for me. Even if you didn't have a roof to go up to, this song put you on that roof that Carol King was singing about. Additionally, not sure what you did with your setup Leland but the bass tone was excellent on this video!
You are a very very blessed, rounded, talented artist Lee. Thanks for this one too!
You are a true master of your instrument Lee, On your recommendation I looked up the JT Blossom show, what a band! And the rendition of 'Honey don't leave LA' is truly awesome..
Great stories and great song.
Sorry for your loss,
My condolences. BR, Per (Denmark)
So sorry for your loss.
I am sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad last month. Sending positive thoughts your way, probably across many miles.
P.S. His funeral was on a Thursday too. It was an outdoor graveside service. We all wore masks. It was very surreal. Anyway, my condolences to you and your family.
My heart is with you and your family.
That tone... It’s like you’re playing a tree. Just lovely.
Craig Doerge was excellent! I also remember him with Jackson Browne.
The master of the melodic bass line - fantastic!
