www.motorbeam.com/ puts the recently launched Tata Bolt against the most selling car in this segment, the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the hot selling Korean vehicle, the Hyundai Grand i10. These three hatchbacks have a lot in common but can the Tata Bolt really beat the Maruti Swift and Hyundai Grand i10? All these three cars are powered by 1.2-litre petrol engines but the Tata Bolt gets a turbocharger, while in diesel, the Swift and Bolt use the same 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet motor and the Grand i10 is powered by a 1.1-litre 3-cylinder mill.

I have driven my bolt diesel car for 180000 km and still going strong and smooth. Plus that harman 8 speaker sound is fantastic.

Glad to see an unbiased review from motor beam. well done team. I booked my bolt being a sensible hatchback and most practical in terms of space even though the swift and grand i10 are more established in our market , the rear bench simply doesnt please me anymore. Yes they might be better on service and maintainence but tata cars have really changed. Moreover other two don't offer any discounts but tata did offer me an excellent deal making it a more value for money . I guess in terms of pure value for money , the bolt wins. Swift has merely got costlier with the face lift and grand i10 doesn't provide safety unless in the asta option pack. So I believe where value for money is concerned, it's really hard to ignore the bolt which comes at a much cheaper price point in my deal. Thanks

@motorbeam,bolt has touch multi function system by Harmon, they act as touch controls for ac, provide gps navigation by using map my India through android phone, can play videos and images, has excellent audio with 4 speakers and 4 tweeters, voice commands for making call from your phone, change music tracks and ac controls, automatically reads incoming texts and notifications of paired phone, also has automatic climate control and lastly multi driving mode. Does grand i10 have this features.
codenamearun as we said in the video, the Bolt does have the best infotainment system but the climate control is a bit weird, there is empty space next to the rotary dials which is awkward.The Bolt has multi-drive which is cool but the engine is old and heavy.

Suraj Sangle the difference between i10 and Grand i10 is vast. Drive the Grand i10 and you are sure to like it much more.If driving fun is all you want, the Swift ranks higher.

Anyway Swift still remains as the leader of the segment. It stands on top when you consider the 'fun to drive' factor...Has great stability at high speeds and with the least amount of body roll at corners, eventually it would certainly put a smile on your face...I strongly believe, the Swift is the best out of the three as it has been on the road for years 'successfully'..

You guys forgot the storage drawer below the front passenger seat of the Bolt. That is a good thought by Tata motors as there are no bottle-holders. I suppose it can store at least 3 bottles.

Dhananjayan Kausshik we are aware about the drawer below the front co-passenger seat. But factor this, when there is no co-passenger, you put the bottle on the seat anyways but when there is a co-passenger, will you tell him/her to move legs so you can put and remove bottles? I don't think so.We have clearly mentioned the Bolt is the widest car and can sit three comfortably but the Grand i10 has more space and that's because of the scooped out front-seat back.We have compared both petrol and diesel cars here.The Grand i10 has better ride than the Swift, the Maruti is stiffer but that also helps is offer a much better ride quality.Bolt is a good car, no doubt but the Grand is a better overall package. You can't go wrong with either of these three.
MotorBeam That's weird because I have been hearing lots of negatives on the Grand's ride quality while the Swift has been the best balance of ride and handling.
True, the co-passenger has to move his legs, but this is just a small compromise for what you get in the Bolt.
Also, the Grand's engine as well as handling ain't good enough for highways. That's again an area where Tata Bolt surpasses the Grand...in terms of stability, ride and handling along with driver steering feel. You can't expect every family to have two cars; one for urban use and another for long drives, right? So, my choice, the Bolt.
Dhananjayan Kausshik agree with you but so many features missing on the Bolt. Also most people use these cars in the city with an occasional trip on the highway.
Features missing on the Bolt? I agree it misses on convenience and storage space... But it has a great equipment list for the price, being a bit cheaper than it's rivals.
Dhananjayan Kausshik here are the missing features - keyless go, push button start, electrically retracting rear view mirrors to name a few.

MotorBeam Dude awesome review, but still, apart from 1L bottle holders (there are 3 that can take 750ml) what else is not practical in the Punto Evo - 280 Liters of boot - all window one touch down - rear seat space is greater than swift - rear AC - the strongest car of all four - and mainly THE PUNTO WILL EVEN ALERT YOU OF A FUSED REVERSE LAMP (has 30 other warnings) what more does a owner want?? the car can diagnose itself
Punto lacks few essentials which other cars are now offering like audio streaming through Bluetooth, reverse parking sensors, push button start, keyless go, etc. The centre console has little place to store things, the glovebox is small too.
But aside from these things, the Punto's ride and handling balance is just surreal.

Bolt - gain in space( without bottle holders) - make a bulky car(not as attractive as others)[ Still it's manufactured in fiat's plant)

I think among these 3 bolt is the safest car
+MotorBeam Well, I have driven the three of them and to be honest I would rate the Tata Bolt to be the best, followed by Swift and at last the Grand i10. When you press the body of the Swift or Grand it seemingly bends a bit but the Bolt has a very strong and practical body. The look of the Bolt are a bit more matured than the Grand and Swift. In terms of performance Swift is an inch better than the Bolt and fares way better than the Grand i10. Tata Bolt offers you 2 airbags and ABS at their mid model (XMS, the price of the diesel variant is near about 7 lakh on road, Kolkata!) which no one else does. Mileage wise Swift leads the trio followed by Bolt and then Grand i10. Hyundai is more about glitterati and glamour, whereas Tata gives the most value for money proposition.
Last week I visited one of the Tata Motors dealer and they offered a price of Rs. 7.8 lakh for the top end Bolt diesel, whereas Swift is coming at Rs. 8.3L and Grand i10 at around Rs. 7.9

For your kind of usage, best is to opt for the petrol, it's faster and has better NVH too. Real world mileage is around 12 km/l.

@clash ott, swift is not the fastest nor best handler, now in petrol engine polo gt tsi is quickest followed by brio under 10lac mark, and in diesel it's polo gt tdi closely followed by both i20 and normal polo tdi, and about handling punto is top,followed by figo,followed by polo then only swift,and in case of cabin space and ride quality swift is far behind many hatchbacks now available.

Yup agreed, with 205 litres boot space is less, but practically speaking the boot can still accomodate 2-3 softbags, maybe 4 for travel requirements. As far rear leg room space is concerned, a normal heighted person can be managed fairly ok. But here's the thing, from price benefit ratio point, the top end Zxi costs about 7-7.1 lakhs on road almost everywhere, whereas i20 asta will cost about a lakh more, dunno about top end tata bolt. The feature list on new zxi still beats asta i10, bolt and even compares to i20 asta. But thats just my opinion...cheers!

Abhishek Marattu Elite i20 is a better choice any day. The Swift is due for an update next year and its service costs aren't drastically cheaper either, it's a myth that Maruti cars are cheaper to maintain.

By the way it's not the pricing I was talking about, actually it's about the last point you made in the video, about that services and reliability that Hyundai could offer.... But imagine your car is dead in highway, I really don't think a stray mechanic is gonna work out your i10 or swift! but he sure does get TATA fixed.....

I'm confused between punto 1.4 petrol vs punto 90hp diesel vs polo TDI(comforline). All three are priced almost same. I want good performance( duke 390 has spoilt me) and most the fun to drive. I don't care about fe and practicality.

Aditya Srinivas agree about the experience of owning a Fiat, the car feels just amazing and you have an instant emotional bond. The Punto isn't a car which will make you get used to it in one test drive alone so you need to drive it a bit long to understand it better.
Take a test drive of both cars and see what you like more.
Petrol would be shit to drive if it isn't turbocharged, obviously sheer weight will kill it. It has to be diesel. For sheer performance, one has to go for punto, it give you thrill but not ease. For ride pleasure n cruising, go for polo. But if you can't afford these two, Bolt is real good machine which can do the job slight compromise on acceleration and luxury.
For me bolt is the winner, it has best cabin space, best in class features, driving dynamics comparable to swift, best ride quality in class, most responsive turbo petrol engine, multi driving mode, cabin quality on par with grand i10.

look at now in todays era bolt has lost its significance and swift is marketleader from the almost past 10 yrs with a sale of around 17000+ every month where i 10 grand hardly touches mark of 10000 sales. Swift has a diff fanbase and in my opinion the swift is fastest N.A engine under 1200cc in india right now..

Diesel engine lacks low-end punch, there is a lot of lag and that makes city driving a pain. The Bolt has a much better tuning for the diesel engine.
Swift lacks rear seat legroom and the Bolt is the most spacious, can easily seat five people in comfort.
Bolt feels solid, gives you a sense of safety.
Bolt has better ride quality than the Swift.
Bolt is more stable than the Swift.
Bolt looks fresher, yes it does have the Vista profile but the design is still nice and appealing. We find it better looking than the Swift but again, looks are subjective.
State of the art infotainment system, the ConnectNext is so good, it can rival C+ segment cars in terms of sound quality and features (image viewer, video viewer, navigation, touch-screen, voice commands, etc).
Swift doesn't have the best engine, it has the most fun engines which will appeal to the enthusiasts like you and me, not to 95% buyers. Same is the case with handling too.
We never said Hyundai service is better than Maruti, it's better than Tata. Maruti dealership network is unbeatable although due to the number of cars on the road, one does have to wait for a few days to get a service slot.
First of all looks are subjective but the bolt dosent seem to be big enough upgrade aesthetically over the vista!!!!

Guys who own Tata Bolt know for Bolt is best and I have completed one year Bolt Petrol and its simply awesome. Bolt is the exciting car to drive and Swift or Grand doesn't excite even though its expensive

kishore kumar Bolt petrol is awesome car and I have tested on long drives with family members and no one gets tired. One can achieve 16km/litre mileage with full load and AC on all the time and 110 speed.

True and agreed. But what do you see in Maruti and Hyundai which lacks in bigger companies like VW, Fiat, Ford, Chevy in India? It's Maruti's reliable and wide after sales services. I've seen places where you may not find chai but you might find Maruti's athourised service centres, I mean it's crazy bro! VW, Ford and Fiat (excluding Chrysler) are amongst the world's top 5 largest auto manufacturers by revenue! Maruti is nowhere near them. Sometimes I just feel they're just reluctant doing business with Indians.
Harsh Dhiman actually Maruti had way big of an advantage by starting so early in India. Look at Suzuki in USA, they are reluctant to do business there.

KINDLY DONT COMPARE WITH I10 ...SWIFT IS BEST IN POWER (83PS) ..AND FUEL EFFICIENT MY I10 GIVE 14 KMPL BUT MY SWIFT GIVE ME BEST 20.5KMPL .... SWIFT HAS VERY SILENT ENGINE SOME TIME I AM CONFUSE (ENGINE ON/OFF )AND MARUTI SERVICE IS FAR BETTER THAN HYUNDAI

MotorBeam i feel bolt has better build quality that why it is heavier among all even if you see in garague u can easily see indica are repaired only for dents not like swift normal crash makes whole bumper go inside, yes thats why most of indica have used for taxi purpose diesel engine that gives better mileage, obviously it lacks interior in big margin but you have to addmit tata have better build qwality. And i own swift and indica v2 2003 model but both petrol version swift has best driveable quality

atif ahmad yes the Bolt does feel solid but the car is also heavier because of its engine, it's made of cast iron instead of aluminum. That's why the Bolt petrol is just 37 kgs lighter than the Bolt diesel. Usually the difference between petrol and diesel variants is more than 100 kgs.
