NOTE: You can actually also tap into the rear wiper motor wire as well instead of the backup lights - thanks for the tip, @Matt_K.!
You'll need an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) with the backup camera function unlocked for this to work! You can find one though :) Just look on eBay, craigslist, or scavenge one from a junkyard.
I therefore did my best in this one to show HOW it was done, and where the wires are routed. It took me about 4 hours when I had no clue the first time... with this video, hopefully it should only take around 2 or so!
Please ask or post any questions below. LIKE, SHARE, and SUBSCRIBE if you find it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Items and Tools Needed are minimal:
Backup Camera (CCD) : you can search eBay
Flathead Screwdrivers - Medium and Tiny
Philips Screwdriver
Metric Sockets - 7-12mm Sizes
Soldering Iron / Solder / Electrical Tape
T-Taps / Pliers for crimping T-Taps
Extra wires and RCA connector w/ Solder tabs from RadioShack
Just like to add a couple of comments on this procedure, First of all thank you very much, to How to escape for the great tutorial on this process, it helped me enormously. I did make a couple of changes from his process though I'd like to share. First I ran my RCA cable up the passenger side and was able to take it all the way to the dash going under the Headliner and rubber seals around the headliner. Once I got to the dash I popped out the Plastic trim to the right of the glove box and was able to fish the wire right behind the glove box to the APIM. NO WIRE EXPOSED at all. I also reprogrammed my APIM instead of buying another using a OBDII, Laptop and Forscan software. Cost me $35 bucks. One final note is when you have the radio control panel off attach the AC vents to it to reinstall correctly. If you don't and do it as shown in this video the AC vents will probably NOT connect themselves to the Radio face plate and you'll see about a 1/4 '' space between them and the Trim. They go in really easy this way as well. Here is a link that will provided a lot of other info I used to do the programming and buy the Molex connectors for the harness. This Forum was a tremendous help as was this video, I HIGHLY recommend using both if you're going to do this job. Thanks again to everyone who put input into this. www.focusst.org/forum/focus-st-electronics/50471-focus-st-backup-camera-enabling-apim-rear-camera-option.html
THAT IS GREAT FEEDBACK, Tom! Thank you for the clear instructions on your wire routing and other ways to improve this process- would be very interested to try Forscan in the near future. Pinning this post to the top of the comments!
How did you program the APIM, I use goo.gl/tgsJzb , with Fordscan, I can't see any camera option for my car to activate it. I got ford escape SEL with nav.
Okay so TOM, where exactly do I bring my car to do you can hook all those do-dads & this bad boy up? 😂
i realize I am kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good website to stream new series online?
@Mauricio Brett flixportal =)
Thanks man! I have a 2013 Ford Escape and I used your videos to upgrade my Apim and install a backup camara!
So cool! Awesome! Glad you were able to find it useful!
Hello, video very helpful, BUT I really need more info concerning (wiring diagram) of the installation to the radio (LCD) unit harness? Again thank you
I have a 2013 SE and behind my license plate holder is a cut out square in the external lift gate. Its the size of a reverse camera. Any ideas on the mod the previous owner did. Camera, if thats what was there, is gone just the hole there now, didn't find the hole till removing license plate holder to install my plates. License plate holder covers the hole.
Thanks man I installed my camera successfully !!! I activated camera functions on forscan
I’m looking at an 08 escape and want to energize the rear camera when it goes to reverse. The reverse light wiring shows voltage on both wires from the bulb, where do I hook this up if I’m running a stand-alone dash cam and not a stereo system?
Planning on installing mine in the morning because of these videos, all have been a huge help since I bought my escape! Quick question though. So I changed my code via FORSCan already and have the camera error screen coming up. So far so good. I also have the harness with the yellow RCA port already installed connected to my system. Should I still disregard the red wire that runs the length of the included RCA cable? I'm pretty sure that it's just for head units to trigger the reverse screen to come on?
Can this work with sync 3? I got a 2013 Titanium and unfortunately, it does not have a backup camera. Thanks
Hey brother, I want to ask you, did you have to reprogram the car stereo in order to activate de reverse camara option? I heard that it needs to be reprogram with a Ford scanner. Is that correct?
THANK YOU. Great tutorial. a question in my 2012 ford focus 14 and 15 are already used? what is your suggestion ?
That's a good question- I'm not totally sure to be honest- if I find out I'll let you know- sorry I couldn't be more helpful here :/ Thanks for the comment and for checking out the channel !
THANK YOU. Great tutorial, it made it possible for me to do the same.
hello, excellent video! a question I have a ford explorer 2012 and I would like to place the flashback camera, is the same procedure? or you know how to do it, thanks
I have gotten three estimates to get the work performed, is $600 a fair price?
hello, I have questions. I installed a rear camera but is not working, my car APIM is number DC3T-14F239-AM. how can fix . Kindly Please help me solve this problem.
Thanks for all the great videos!! Question, if I wanted to add a factory camera in the factory location, does that plastic rectangle piece come out or do I have to cut/modify it?!
Thank you and you're very welcome! There is actually a factory panel for the camera itself to mount to- id search factory cameras for your escape and you can pretty quickly see the trim piece that the camera mounts to- id recommend going that route for cleanest fit! Trick is finding your color match between your FE and the panel
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews Thanks for your response!! Actually, I have a chrome panel with the factory back up camera and wanted to change it to tuxedo black to match my vehicle. I have seen the replacement panels with and with out cameras included. With out a camera is extremely less expensive than with the camera, so before I take everything apart, I wanted to see if I could swap out the "electronics" and just order the panel itself...Hopefully that makes sense!!!
Hey I’m installing the same camera as you have in my 2013 Ford Escape (exactly same set up as you) but I’m trying to figure what colour or what wire the positive lead from the reverse light is ? Please I just need to know what wire to tap into to get my power
Hey Lyndon! I believe there were two wires- green and black. I believe that black was the positive power source and green was the ground. In any case, I wired up both and had the luxury of swapping them at the back of the APIM to test if I was correct. Please let me know if you have any more questions!
Hi
I have some problems with my rear camera, sometimes it does appears as not available or sometimes is upside down i wanted to check that theres not any short curcuit on the cables but I wasnt able to remone the lift gate trim can you explain me how should I remove it please
Thanks
Sup man does the sel have the back up camera interface plug in already ? Or did you have to get ? I bought the camera you used and I took it to a place to get it installed but they told me about this interface thing ?
Hi there!! I need your help please! I just purchase a 2013 Ford escape Titanium and guess what??? No backup camera and have the Sony radio what can i do?? Thanks
Is there any other BUC option you'd go with now that this video is over a year old? Looking for oem if at all possible or something close to it. Thanks. Also can you program nav with forscan too?
Yes- If you're looking for a budget camera, this is the one. However, I would still try to go OEM and get the actual camera that fits the rear trim above the license plate. I am not sure if this will provide you with the right communication to link up the white projected turning lines when you turn your wheel/look at the screen, but it'll for sure be a better camera in the long run. Also, Yes, Forscan has been known to unlock navigation as well!
Do these procedures apply to a 2015 Explorer? Haven't been able to find an online tutorial. If you guys out there know of one, I would love to see.
Thanks
It should be very similar if not the same. Both the Escape and Explorer 2013-2015 have Sync 2 so it should be identical applications. I can't say for 100% though.
Bro, How did you enable the camera function on the radio?
Hey @Cesar! Sorry for the delayed response- so I actually found an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module - located behind the touchscreen) that had the camera and Nav unlocked. I just swapped the module out. However, you CAN use FORSCAN to enable the backup camera in an APIM I believe.
How did you get the guides on the left and right? I had a camera installed at a shop and i have tye guides enabled in my 13 escape but i dont have guides. Any thoughts?
Good morning mr. Escape I bought my wife a 2013 and the my my sync navigation is not working if I buy one of those cards that's missing in hers under the arm rest will I just be able to plug it in and go
Hey Big Mike, if your wife's 2013 Escape says "Insert SD Card" or something similar in the top right hand corner of the MyFord Touch 8" touch screen or if it says "NAVIGATION", then yes, GPS is enabled and it's waiting for a maps SD card. IF it just says "Information" in the top right of the 8" touch screen, then the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module... a control block attached to the back of the screen, lol) either needs to be swapped or reprogrammed. Hope this helps!
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews my screen on my 2013 Ford escape says "information" instead of "navigation". Where can I buy a apim that will say navigation?
Great video and thank you. I have a 2014 Ford Escape with the 4 inch screen. The backup camera doesn't really work. It turned on maybe 3-4 times when I put the car in reverse. It's mostly not turning on when in reverse? Do you have any idea what it could be and how to test it? Thank you again.
Mine doesnt turn on as well. It will turn on during winter but during summer it won't. I guess temperature affects the wiring. Dealer wants to charge me a lot just to inspect that and theres no guarantee that they can fix it.
Primo como van los cables de atras es que no le entendí al bato. Entiendo poquito inglés. Me puedes decir xomo van conectados los cables atras para saber bien
Hi I am a bit lost the 14 and 15 is power or video in ?
another great vid! by the way what size should I use for the torx screws on the handle?
Thanks, Kenneth! I think they're philips head aren't they? I am looking back through the videos I've done and only have record of them being philips- did a video on the handle coming loose- ua-cam.com/video/JoJpdOucbH8/v-deo.html Could we have different screws somehow?
Mine Pinout 14-15 does't seem to be empty does that mean that it support already rear camera ?
Hey @Rejean!
Not necessarily. The only way to tell if your APIM comes with the backup camera ready is if you put the car in reverse and a warning pops up on the screen that the camera is disconnected. If that's not the case, you'll still need to find an APIM from a vehicle that featured a backup camera to have the feature unlocked. OR, you can go with FORSCAN and reprogram your current APIM. As for FORSCAN, there's a lot of posts about it on fordescape.org and requires an OBDII scanner that can talk with your computer and go into your vehicle settings. I've yet to do the conversion myself just from lack of time, but it's possible and there are loads of people who use it regularly to give you advice. Worth checking out if a used APIM is a pain in the butt.
However, here's the thread on FordEscape.org on the backup camera:
www.fordescape.org/forum/diy-garage/51697-successful-integration-ebay-backup-camera-into-stock-mft-my-13-fe-se-2.html
It's a direct link to a post by HayaiKuruma, who ALSO had pins in his wire harness, but still had to source his own camera ready APIM. Let me know if you have any more quetions and thanks for checking out the channel!
Do you have the link where Incan buy the camera?
I want to know if you can please help me get the parts that I would need to instal a backup camara if my ford touch did not bring it with the escape. Can you please help me on this ?
Hi @Chovy_Nunez, sure I hope I can point you in the right direction:
You will need:
- A Ford Escape APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) from the same generation of Sync from a Ford Escape or Ford Focus (almost all '13-'15 models are Sync 2. '16's are mostly Sync 3 I believe).
- an eBay backup camera (CCD works well for night visibility). There are wireless and wired versions. Wireless will save you the time from routing cords from back to front, but you have to tap the power sources twice. Wired versions you only need to tap the tail light for power once, and then the positive and negative feed for the camera into the MyFord Touch wire harness.
- T-Taps, Solder, Shrink Tubing/Electrical tape, and zip ties as needed. These can all be picked up collectively between a trip to Wal-Mart and an auto parts store (Auto Zone, O'rielly's, etc.)
Please let me know if you have any more questions- Thanks for watching!
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
Hello and 1stly thank you.
2nd. The camera is from eBay the small parts are from Walmart but where would someone find the APIM?
Also does the wireless version depend on internet or Bluetooth. Last question if this is something that I simply cannot do who would you suggest I find, a general mechanic perhaps?
so the coax jack wire that u add is red and black wires? then you pinned to 14(+) and 15(-) which is empty what is 1 and 18?? and coax jack connects to video out from camera right?
I guess it’s just a reference
hello, did the screen (navigation screen) you have come with this escape? Or did you install of after as well?
charae richardson it is the factory screen - If you wanted to get an aftermarket screen (they do make them for these Escapes) they have a yellow video jack out the back of them- much less complex than wiring into the stock ford unit. The wire routing up the car would be similar though! please let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching!
may i ask, can you put a link to a aftermath navigation system with radio that is compatible with the 2013 ford escape & that can have a back up camera installed as well? additionally a dash panel or installation kit if it doesn't come with one. Thanks in advance
After doing a few minutes of research I found a few items:
From Crutchfield- a bit expensive, but a good company with a good reputation: www.crutchfield.com/p_113DDX6903/Kenwood-Excelon-DDX6903S.html?tp=20217&awkw=210690366745&awat=pla_with_promotion&awnw=g&awcr=108845708425&awdv=c&awug=9008464
This includes a Kenwood aftermarket screen with options for a backup camera behind it (yellow wires). It also has the option to the right to match up your vehicle to see what other hardware you'll need. It allows you to enter the year, make, and model of your escape as well as if you have the 4'' Sync or 8'' MyFord Touch screen. Then you go from there and select the best options to go with. ***I haven't personally purchased or handled this set, so I don't KNOW all the ins and outs or if it will install with a clean fit, or not. As said before though, Crutchfield doesn't sell junk, so my guess is that this could be legit for your application.***
If you're looking to go aftermarket for a backup camera and navigation keep your stock unit, check out LockPick: www.coastaletech.com/mytouch.htm.
It's an aftermarket solution to insert this product as an intermediate module to intercept the signal going to the screen on your Escape. It basically plugs into the RCA (red/white/yellow) plugs in the center console and overrides the system to allow a video input while driving. Currently, Ford has it set that the RCA plugs can only play video while the car is in "Park" for safety/distraction reasons. Some people have bought this system and been able to plug their phone into the RCA plugs via adapters (phone>usb>rca) to project Google Maps onto the stock Ford setup. However, the touchscreen capabilities at that point are inactive because it's just playing video rather than enabling buttons. ** I am NOT SURE if it works for smaller 4'' screens, but I do KNOW that it works for the 8'' MyFord Touch screens with Sync 2. **
Please let me know if this answers your question! Happy to help with anything else if I can.
Thanks!
Thanks a lot! I appreciate it!
Also, I do not have the red, white, and yellow cords in my center console :( I only have the line in one, is there an adapter for this?

Thanks for the video. One question (even though I'm on EU), if someone has the MFT 8" with navi - touch etc, but no backup camera, would he actually need to change the APIM in order just to add the camera?
Thanks for the comment Todo- I did swap out the APIM for the unlocked feature. However, others are experimenting with FORscan and OBDII scanners/programmers to reconfigure the APIM to unlock features without having to get a new APIM. I don't have experience in this, but I can direct you here where people have taken some serious in depth discussions and troubleshooting:
Mod for NAV (perhaps a camera could be done the same way): forum.xda-developers.com/windows-mobile/general/myford-touch-navigation-activation-t3368080
General Info on How to Reconfigure: www.focusst.org/forum/focus-st-electronics/20866-focccus-pc-app-built-editor-all-around-reprogrammer.html
Again, I don't know for sure if these methods have a direct correlation to unlock the camera function, but it has potential.
I DO know for sure that the APIM swap works. The wire ports are available for tapping into the back of the APIM harness, but it needs to be unlocked/enabled for the backup camera.
Hope this helps!
I checked your other video that you changed the APIM. And I also noticed that, before changing, there was an "information" touch area in the top right corner (instead of naigation, which I also have). This is the main reason I actually asked you.
Thank you very much for the links (I already knew these, but to tell you the truth I dint have the time to check all over it in order to find what I am looking for). I also have an ELM327 which I already moded it and works fine. So I will start looking for more info on the links you provided.
Once again, thank you very much for your time to answer my question and for your video (even though I have a Focus, it is still helpful to see the work of others)!
Todo Sk Yep, no problem! We're all on the same system, so it's cool we can collaborate- Which ELM327 did you buy? I went to get one but couldn't figure out if I got the knock off or not as my tutorial seemed a bit out dated and the board didn't match up- thanks Todo!
The one I got is "unavailable", but here is the link (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VTD4K6M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The "trick" is on the chip (I think that version 1.5 does not actually exist, but well, dont mind about that). You can find all the required info about the chip here: www.sheerwire.co.uk/single-post/2016/03/11/Which-ELM327-Switch-cable-compatible-with-Forscan-Focccus-for-your-Ford.
I then got a switch (www.ebay.com/itm/2-pcs-6-Pin-DPDT-ON-ON-2-Position-6A-250VAC-Mini-Toggle-Switches-MTS-202-/391261974769?hash=item5b1907f0f1:g:V2wAAOSwKIpV-OTo) and connected it to the ELM (I had to use a dremel-like tool in order to fit the switch in)
updated last post with the correct link of ELM327 (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VTD4K6M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
I have a 2013 will that work for me
Yes it will! Mine is a 2013 as well.
Hi. How do I know that my APIM is camera enabled? I have NAV but not the camera. Thanks
Hi Andrei, your MFT screen would have an error message that would pop up saying that your camera is not connected. When you either unlock your APIM with FORSCAN, an OBDII plugin off eBay, or you find another APIM with both nav and backup camera unlocked, that notification will pop up and then that's the que to wire in your backup camera. Hope this helps! Thanks for checking out the channel!
Are 14 and 15 the same on sync 3 for rca connection
Hi Al, I can't verify anything for Sync 3 unfortunately- just have Sync 2 in my '13 SE. Sorry, but thanks for asking and for checking out the channel!
So I ran the camera wires to the radio I have to change the APIM
What’s the name
Of the camera to look on ebay
One like this should work just fine! www.ebay.com/itm/CCD-Car-Reverse-Camera-for-Ford-Kuga-Escape-2013-2015-Backup-Rear-View-Monitors/253374427236?hash=item3afe4af064:g:6h0AAOSw~5ZcUusx
can anyone please send a link to a apim that would work for me. I have a 2103 ford escape titanium with 8" screen with navigation. I have been looking on ebay and i have no idea which one i need. thank you very much
hi ijust bought the same camera from eBay and i install it as shown on the video specially for connection in V+ an v- on 14 an 15 pins but nothing work properly. when i connect the video input in the auxiliar connection i can see the camera screen so can u tell me plz what is the missing part or what should i do to let it be correctly installed and working
Hi Toufic,
Yes, that does seem to be missing something there if your pinouts are wired up correctly. Where is your power tapped into? The black and red wires? I was doing mine first late at night and tapped into the outermost tail lights rather than the ones on the hatch with the white reverse lights. Any chance you did this as well?
hi thank you for your replied. the red and black wired are connected to the rear lamp wire so when i put the reverse on the transmission i have power 12v for the camera
Excellent- have you tested with a voltmeter to make sure the 12V are there when shifter is in reverse?
yes man sure i have 12v and i told you the camera is working only on the auxiliar input so when i change sources between radio am fm Sirius .... on aux i can see the camera screen but when i connected to the pin out from 14. and 15 i cant see screen
so it seem like i have a missing part not only i need an video out female connector to connect on the MFT harness right?
So you must have a camera enabled apim?
Hey @fleetgt, sorry for the late response.
Yes- you need an APIM with the backup camera unlocked. Whether you find a factory APIM with this, or you reprogram your existing one with FORSCAN via OBDII, it's necessary to change your MFT screen to look for the camera when the car is in reverse.
Having purchased an OEM camera yourself, you probably already know this, but eBay cams don't provide the projected backup lines (white) in the camera image. They only have the red/yellow/green indicator lines. If your liftgate door doesn't come with that connector/wire harness you may be able to find one... However, FROM MY EXPERIENCE ONLY, the signals coming to the camera should be:
1) Positive 12V power to the camera from your backup light
2) Video positive and negative feed to the MFT dash
3) Ground (0v) from the camera.
That should be the four pinouts you're talking about. I only have experience with the eBay cam, but i would THINK that the smarts for the white steering lines are built into the OEM camera, hence the extra few bucks you gotta spend for it along with the larger size of the module.
Please let me know if you discover anything differently or if you have another question! Everybody's learning here :)
Thanks again for checking out the channel!
I Have the exact same setup as you, and want a backup Camera! Are you located anywhere near Indiana, if so do you do installation?
Hi Rhys, very cool! Good luck- sorry I am located on the east coast and wouldn't be able to help you with that but if you go slow and take your time you can do it! Thanks for checking out the channel!
I did this yo my kuga with sync2 version but can you do the same on sync 3?
Hey @ Brad, I'm not sure- I haven't been able to get my hands on a Sync 3 setup yet, but I thought that all cars that would have Sync 3 would already come factory with a backup camera?
No they dont here in the uk. Im purchasing a new kuga and want to add one again
Ah- that makes sense. The principle should stay the same, but I can't guarantee it unfortunately :/ Maybe the pinouts will change as I understand the APIM and screen hardware are different/updated.
hi do you have a complet video with all instalation
Hi Wilfredo,
Unfortunately I do not have a detailed video at this time- I installed the camera before making the video, so the step by step is limited, I recognize that- However, please feel free to ask any and all questions you may have on here and I'd be happy to assist.
I DO have a post on Fordescape.org with detailed steps written out of what I did- I know it's not a video, but it's the 5th or 6th entry down the page I believe: www.fordescape.org/forum/diy-garage/51697-successful-integration-ebay-backup-camera-into-stock-mft-my-13-fe-se.html

yeah i did teste it but it didnt work
what else can i test? because it didnt work
Should have shut video when you actually did the job rather than talking about it after the work is done.
Agreed- the camera was already in before I made the youtube channel unfortunately- there is a writeup on fordescape.org and a play-by-play if you're still interested: www.fordescape.org/forum/diy-garage/51697-successful-integration-ebay-backup-camera-into-stock-mft-my-13-fe-se.html
Your video is too fast on removing trim with no instructions. Learn to UA-cam.
Hi Anira- sorry for the lack of clarity here. It was one of those earlier videos we did where we had already done the procedure, then followed up with a writeup on fordescape.org with all the details. The video was the follow up to that and we didn't dismantle everything to explain it as well as we could have. That was in 2016... we've learned a lot since then and I hope it will show if you look at our other videos since then as we've striven to make helpful and useful videos. You have every right to be frustrated and I'd be happy to make you a video if you can please let me know exactly what part of the trim you're looking to disassemble? Is it just the rear hatch? Or is it the trim along the interior as well? Happy to help in any way I can. Thanks for pointing this out and helping us be better. Looking forward to hearing back.
