    As someone who has worked both in game development, and VFX (coincident industries) and now works making the tools used by developers (Unity) it is interesting to see the viewpoint of someone who thought they knew it all, then started doing it, and realized they didn't, and then had the character to says so.

      It's interesting getting the hate on the SC refunds subreddit thinking this is a promo video, and the support here for making what is mostly an instructional video, but that's the real takeaway here. I got humbled, and I like to think I'm better for it.

    This was beautifully put, thank you. Nobody I've met from CIG wants to make a bad game: quite the opposite, in fact. Modern games are huge and complex and rub up against themselves in a billion different ways (I'll stick the QA Song on the end of this to prove my point, because it happens so often there's a freakin' SONG about it) and stuff goes unexpectedly sideways in hilarious, frustrating, tear-inducing ways that need to be found, chased and (and here's the hard part) fixed without unwittingly breaking anytime else along the way.
    I'm sorry you had to step away from that; every member of the team is a boon to CIG, to SC and to the community overall - but I'll be delighted to see you back in the cockpit instead. o7
    And the QA Song...
    Ninety-nine tiny bugs in the code
    Ninety-nine tiny bugs!
    You track one down, squash it into the ground
    You got a hundred and forty-seven bugs in the code....

    • @102728
      @102728 11 місяців тому

      Ahh, the song of my people.
      But honestly, I'd love to do QA on a project like this. I love diving into the deep end, understanding what a dev did and why, and figuring out how I'm gonna make his life hell by breaking it.
      The way I see it, QA is the extension of the dev, taking the creative and constructive efforts they poured into it and going down the darker route of how it would break. But with the single goal in mind of improving what they made by making it resistant to issues. Not just finding what goes wrong, but understanding the thinking behind it and contributing to it and help finding a way to improve it and make sure that it can endure the unexpected. To ultimately reach a point where what the dev created is robust and reliable, doing what it should and forming a solid basis for new features to be put upon.

    • @D-Delta
      @D-Delta 11 місяців тому +1

      Exactly! Good QA is collaborative; while the break & remake process might sometimes be (good-naturedly) adversarial, everyone has the same goal and works towards it for the same basic reason. I've lost count of the number of developers and asset modellers to whom I've explained this and had genuine surprise back, but it's the only way you get the results that everybody wants. This idea that QA is the enemy (overzealous, underzealous, malicious, incompetent, pick any two...) needs to be taken out behind the chemical sheds and left there, because everyone I've worked with has been a passionate cheerleader not just for the project on which they've been working, but the people they've been supporting along the way (even if they do get a little frustrating sometimes. Ahem.).
      Although, of course, you always get extra points, of course, for breaking something in a funny way. :)

    I think majority of people do not doubt developers themselves. People who are dissatisfied are dissatisfied because we have been hearing all these nice things for very, very long time. And, well, we are still waiting. I actually know how hard this job is. I also know what it´s like to be under competent leadership that want to drive the project forward.

      Most of us, as far as I'm aware, don't doubt the devs. If we have a bone to pick - and believe me, there are some of us with BONES. TO. PICK. - they are with the management, especially the upper management, and *especially* the uppermost manager himself. The devs themselves are doing the best they can, but they aren't the decision-makers and the decision-making is where the problems are. Also marketing needs to chill tf out.

    • @Odeezee
      @Odeezee Рік тому +10

      @@alvatoredimarco see, this comes off as a very intuitive response, but is it actually factual? are you and those who agree with you coming to those conclusions based on the truth and actual evidence or more just a series of suppositions and conjecture for what you "feel" makes the most sense? we know that even at the company they do not even know what the other teams are doing, because they are focused on their part of the whole and why Jared says that ISCs are also to inform devs of what other devs are doing. i am just wary of indicting "management" for things that may not be managements fault, just because we want someone to blame and we, as humans, tend to pattern recognition, even if it leads to conspiracism. 🤷🏾‍♂

      @@Odeezee Clearly, something is not going correctly with this process. Nearly half a billion dollars in funding, over 12 years of development, with so little to show is a problem. Management and leadership are the ones responsible for, you know.... leading and managing projects and teams. Hard work, talent, and passion alone can lead to a lot of wasted time, money, and effort if not properly planned and focused.
      Although, if the goal is to keep the crowd funding and investment capital flowing, then leadership are doing a great job, but I don't necessarily believe that.

    • @vorpalrobot
      @vorpalrobot Рік тому +1

      @@BRUXXUSwhat we have now is starting to compete with other "released games". It would lead the genre if they polished what they have now and had even moderate stability.
      What I see is the work of about 5 years from a regular studio. Add a few years for bad outsourcing mistakes early on. Then add a few more as they structure and restructure the development architecture, where an established studio would have workflows and teams in place.
      Never mind the more complicated tech at play compared to many other titles.
      I'm not really sure what's confusing about why the project isn't finished yet, it's pretty apparent.
      They seem to be on better footing lately and we've been getting some good stuff introduced.
