  • Check out this comparison between the 2019 Challenger Scatpack Shaker and the 2019 Challenger Scatpack Widebody. I test to see if the shaker system actually cools air better than the traditional scatpack air box which will typically mean more power. The results may surprise you.

For the 345 hemi (except the 392), its completely useless because its been found that the stock intake for the rt engine is more than enough. With the shaker, you will actualy experience hotter intake temps because the engine bay is completely sealed "no venting", the shaker scoop sits directly over the engine - trappong the intense heat in, and the intake filter is not completely sealed. But if you open the headlight air intake, air will flow straight to the filter and will help reduce intake air temps

You can also knock out the Drives side plastic cap in the center of the head lgt. Also there is a cut out on the bottom front side of the air box just for this. So now the shaker has 3 air ports.

The widebody's stock air filter box is closed and keeps more heat out - it's basically a better system for keeping engine heat out than the open filter box system which might look better but doesn't keep the heat out as good.

Best bang for the buck is the Hellcat airbox and filter with the pipe going to the headlight hole. I got the box, tube, and filter for about $85, and it took about 5 min to install. same peak temp as stock non-shaker, but the temp drops quicker and it ends up a little lower once it bottoms out. I added a Genpartsco screen in the headlight hole to keep leaves and junk out. I think it was $20.

I have a 2018 scat pack with the normal RT hood. The average air intake temp to outside air temp was 10 degrees. I installed the hellcat air box and headlight tube and now the average difference is 5 degrees.

the shaker airbox technically has 4 intake points. the 2 you mentioned, the bottom of the airbox, as well as the top that's exposed allowing you to see the filter. don't let that "rubber seal" fool you. it is there for looks. it doesn't seal to the hood. Heat soak is a very big issue with shaker models because of that. Most of that filter is ingesting a lot of engine bay heat. I used some cheap weather stripping for a temporary fix. made a HUGE difference with air intake temps. i'm thinking about making a more permanent seal with some flex seal "sculpting".
I've had the pleasure of being able to talk to an SRT engineer. He told me that the scat pack shaker model makes 15 more horsepower at 45 mph. He said the T/A hood makes "a little more", but did not say how much. I assume this info is disregarding that huge airbox problem on shaker models. What do you think?

  • @jasonvelez7317
    @jasonvelez7317 4 роки тому +3

I agree with the "extractor" logic. More, more fuel, more whatever doesn't equal more performance. It's about balance. Shaker has more intake air but that air is going into a constricted hotter space. Great test guys! Thanks for demo-ing this.

The widebody's hood is keeping his engine compartment cooler the shaker is instead piping that air directly to the intake resulting in more air but at slightly higher temperatures.
The shaker obviously would make more power from cold start to heat soak and although warmer it is still getting more air once the engine is at temp so it would be close at that point. Had the cars been cold started and normally driven without a 10 min heatsoaked idle I think temperature wise the results would be different.

So get a regular Scat Pack with Dynamic Package option and that should take care of the larger tires in rear so rear end doesn't break loose. Also what about the adaptive suspension option? The website does not specify which hood the Scat Pack comes with unless you pick the "Shaker" option for $2,200 or the $6,000 "Widebody" option.

The adaptive suspension is not going to be of much use to you on the street. It just allows you to stiffen the suspension. The drag mode of the 1320 would be cool but the sport and track modes stiffen the rear and which is not really what you want for a good launch for a good 0-60. Its more for cornering improvement.

Or can you hook up that one CAI intake to the drive side light and direct it to the open air filter for the cold air direct to air filter and have that one passenger side light open for cold air to cool engine so then the car with shaker will get 2 sources of air from top and from front driver air intake hooked into open air filter?

I dont think the shaker is made to cool the iat. I think its just made to shove as much air as possible down that bees throat. My explanation for the increase in heat while sitting idle is that the nostrils sit midway over the sun baked hood and also the top of its “air box” by the throttle body is the actual hot sun baked hood. However i do recognize that the shaker has room for improvement and also can be superior to the normal system at cooling down the iat by using reflective insulation and also better sealing in the airbox

I made a lid for my airbox out of thin tin and take out the headlight blank for cool air. The lid helps keep engine bay heat out and headlight blank lets more cool air hit the front opening on airbox. Also did you know the bottom of the box is open? The air that is pushed in for brake cooling runs right there.

You're forgetting his car has active engine bay cooling from that 2019 hood, and pulls in air mostly from under the car. The shaker pulls it in mostly from the engine bay, and just above the hood , which is in the sun and already hot from the radiant engine heat. Its also worth mentioning that the shaker hood is really more for looks than function when you consider its inlet design. Its by no means a cold air intake. I dont feel 'surprising' is the word here... Try it with an earlier model challenger like the 2015-2018 with the previous style hoods that dont have so much venting.

I talked to an SRT engineer about the stock cold air intakes. He told me that the shaker on a scat pack adds 15 horsepower at 45 mph over the standard scat pack. He also told me that the T/A 392 cold air intake "is a little better" although he didn't say how much better. He mentioned that if you add that headlight tube on the shaker model, it's just as good as the T/A cold air intake.
That being said.... My personal experience with the shaker doesn't quite seem like it makes a difference as the heat soak is incredible here in Las Vegas. Sealing that shaker airbox to the hood makes a HUGE difference on air intake temps. heat soak is still a problem, but not nearly as bad as before. I used standard weather stripping to seal the airbox to the hood. I'll eventually move to a better solution, but it's a great temporary fix for the shaker's "Hot Air Intake" system. I think the main issue with the shaker is, all the "shaker parts" get pretty hot and heat up the cool air on the way to the airbox. I added thermal tape on the bottom of my shaker and it made absolutely no difference. maybe a thermal blanket for exhaust might work better, but it's hard to say. that tube going from the shaker to the airbox needs to be wrapped too. That widebody comes with the hellcat hood, which vents the heat from under the hood really well, which would help the heat soak issue a bit too.

"That widebody comes with the hellcat hood, which vents the heat from under the hood really well, which would help the heat soak issue a bit too". THAT IS WHAT I THOUGHT.
So if I do a "Build your own" on the Dodge website and on the Scat Pack Challenger don't select the "shaker" option or the "Wide Body" option which hood do I get on the regular Scat Pack Challenger? Is it a non-functional old SRT hood?
OR Am I better off selecting the 1320 Challenger Scat Pack even though I won't be doing that kind of driving burnouts (computer program) but need the fastest 0-60 time to get onto the freeway ramp? Is it a waste to order the 1320 Challenger Scat Pack for this kind of driving on the street using the factory all season tires?

The shaker hood brought the air temp down faster at first but, I feel the reason that the Wide Body actually ran cooler is because of the Frontal area and airflow of the Widebody Fascia in conjunction with the heat extractor hood on the Widebody actually does a much better job of keeping the ambient air temp. down in the entire engine compartment and that's where your extra 5 degrees of temp is coming front because both car are grabbing a good portion of air from the local engine compartment area. You lower the air temp in the engine compartment you ARE going see lower air inlet temps. I own a Scat Pack Shaker.

With my wide body 392 R/T with the hellcat air box if never more than 5° more than the outside air because it is pulling from underneath the car the front turn signal intake and with those heat extractors and a functioning hood scoop wide body stays really cool

  • @evancontos2267

Interesting results, most likely the intakes on the CAI sucking in hot air from engine, the wide-body also has heat extractors on the hood. I also noticed on the CAI the hole open for the drivers side light intake that is pulling hot air. Hook up to light intake like hellcat, it will help. Can you say Shaker wide-body, LOL?

Ok here is the dilly .... the shaker has a whole lot of suface area to pick up engine compartment heat soak. Also the extra duct from the shaker to the filter is picking up heat soak . Here is what im thinking Paul i think if you and your buddy can get both your cars to your house or his and have both of them completely cooled off try to see what the temp is for 15 or 20 min after driving . I bet the shaker has a cooler number. 👍👍👍👍👍👊👊

I bought a used 2013 mustang gt that already had a cold air system. I bought a used stock air box and picked up almost a tenth and over one MPH in the 1.4. Those cold air sysyetems pull in engine heat and are useless.

The 1320 has the adaptive suspension already included in that package as well as the Dynamic Package in the 2019 Dodge website. I just want the better street car and faster car for getting on freeway ramps. I don't want to be doing burn outs at stop lights and getting attention from the police. But I want the faster 0-60 MPH Challenger. I do not see myself using that computer program for the drag strip on the street.
I also want a functional hood not a fake hood scoop. I think if you order the regular Scat Pack they put on the non-functional old SRT hood but that information is not specified on the 2019 Dodge website.

The SP WB Challenger got lower temps because of the two air extractors on top of the hood. The shaker Challenger just has a plain flat hood for no hot air to escape or to get in cool air to engine for cooler temps. Also since air filter is not in a fully sealed box some of that hot air from engine compartment gets into airbox to contribute to higher temps. The closed airbox keeps the heat out better.
    Does this all make sense?????
Also note is there any way to make that center air intake fuctional that's in the middle of those two heat extractor vents on top of hood of SPWB Challenger? Or is that center air intake already functional along with those 2 functional air extractors?

I think it's the exhaust and the louvers on the back window, also is his windows more tinted than the Scat Pack because if those things like exhaust are able to move air better that can have a big difference. Going fast is all about taking in air and removing it along with the air the heat is dissapatting from the engine, what's your thoughts ? I'm a heating/ac guy by trade so very understanding how air works along with cfm's at the return vent(s,) and at each register.
