BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

what da hek's a pingler?
Apparently someone that fidgets with their food instead of eating it
In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's basic idea, but I did it this way:
50 - 4 = 46
46 x 4 = 184
184 + 3 = 187
187 x 5 = 935
However, my first solution was this:
50 + 5 = 55
25 - 4 - 4 = 17
55 x 17 = 935
The second numbers round was so easy that I challenged myself to use all of the numbers to make it more difficult:
50 / 5 = 10
10 - 9 = 1
25 + 1 = 26
6 - 2 = 4
26 x 4 = 104
25 - 6 = 19
50 x 19 = 950
5 x 2 = 10
950 / 10 = 95
95 + 9 = 104
In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution but also had these:
75 x 9 = 675
50 x 5 = 250
675 + 250 = 925
925 - 8 = 917
75 + 9 = 84
84 x 8 = 672
50 x 5 = 250
672 + 250 = 922
922 - 5 = 917
The latter was suggested by the former.
In the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, but I think it's the only viable one.
I’m pretty sure nobody cares.
Not as funny as usual. These must be lower tier comedians?

That too few people comment on 😂
I: Aieeee... About 10 seconds too late, the key went in the lock. After failing with the bigs, I took one final look at the 5 and figured that 187X5=935.
So 4X50=200
200-25 is 175
The other 4X3=12
175+12 is the 187 required.
II: At 29 seconds, I got a roundabout on that one.
(9-5) = (6-2) = 4
Use the two interchangeably in 4X25 = 100 + 4
III: Got the contestant's 1 away, and then we watch Rachel make a fool out of us all.
IV: And another one of those "you lose the plot when you have to add to a real off number and then find out..." Yeah...
Rachel's answer to 917 made me punch my desk lol I was sat for several minutes trying to get it to work.
I had 75*9+5*50-8. Felt easier than Rachel's way.
Only got 904 in the first one, 104 exactly on the 2nd one, 916 on the 3rd, & 757 on the last one.
1. (50+3)x4-25=187x5=935 or (50-3)x4+4=192x5-25=935
2. (50+5+6-9)x2=104
3. (9-5)x5x50-8-75=917 or (5+5+9)x50+75-8=917
4. (25+75+8)x7-1=755
5. Stringent
There was a less complicated way for 935 it involves 55*17;
25-4-4=17
50+5=55
55*17=935
22 ... ouch
I did the 935 also by multiplying 187x5. I got the 187 by multiplying 50 by 4, subtracting 25 and adding 3x4. Rachels way was prettier though, using only one 4
755=7×(75+25+8)-1
I got that too. Surprised no one picked that up with 7x8 giving 56.
Round 1
((50 + 4) x 3 + 25) x 5
Round 2
2 x 50 + 9 - 5
(25 - 6) x 5 + 9
Round 3
(75 + 50 - 5) x 8 - (9 x 5) = 915
Had I noticed 1000 - 75 - 8, I could've got that one!
Round 4
(75 + 7 - 1) x (8 + 1) + 25 = 754
Kicking myself at missing the 8 x 7.
4 + 4 = 8
25 - 8 = 17
50 + 5 = 55
55 * 17 = 935
50 * 2 = 100
9 - 5 = 4
100 + 4 = 104 (everybody that didn't get this needs to go back to school)
9 - 5 = 4
50 * 5 * 4 = 1000
75 + 8 = 83
1000 - 83 = 917
75 + 25 + 8 = 108
108 * 7 = 756
756 - 1 = 755
917*
9 x 75 = 675
5 x 50 = 250
675 + 250 = 925
925 - 8 = 917
How does RR do it? Not only the numbers, but so often the letters too...
Bachelor in Mathematics from Oxford. As for the letters, I imagine having been on the show for 14 years gets you quite good at it, just like how Colin is getting better at the maths.
I have heard that a lot of mathematicians are good at anagrams. It might have something to do with manipulating symbols in their heads but who knows?
It might also just be speed of thought. I can often get there but not in 30 seconds. Thank UA-cam for the pause button.

RR has at least 60 seconds, maybe even more.

Lmao poor guy how did he think nesting was gonna be the answer
Minus15 is 1185.
917=(9+5)×5×50-75-8
917 = (75 - 5) * (8 + 5) + 9
= 919?
935=5×(4×50-25+3×4)
935=5×(3×(50+4)+25)
935=(50+5)×(25-4-4)
935=50x4-25+(4x3)x5
Writing it like that only equals 235. You need brackets around everything before the x5 to get 935.
@@JoeGrohlDJ Yup, I wrote it down too fast. You're right.
