Lyrics Well, sometimes, I go out by myself And I look across the water And I think of all the things, what you're doin' And in my head, I paint a picture Since I've come home Well, my body's been a mess And I've missed your ginger hair And the way you like to dress Won't you come on over? Stop makin' a fool out of me Why don't you come on over, Valerie? Valerie Valerie Valerie Did you have to go to jail? Put your house out up for sale? Did you get a good lawyer? Hope you didn't catch a tan I hope you'll find the right man who fix it for ya Are you shopping anywhere? Change the colour of your hair? Are you busy? And did you have to pay the fine you were dodgin' all the time Are you still dizzy? 'Cause since I've come home Well, my body's been a mess And I've missed your ginger hair And the way you like to dress Won't you come on over? Stop makin' a fool out of me Why don't you come on over, Valerie? Valerie Valerie Valerie Well, sometimes, I go out by myself And I look across the water And I think of all the things, what you're doin' And in my head, I paint a picture 'Cause since I've come home Well, my body's been a mess And I've missed your ginger hair And the way you like to dress Won't you come on over? There are countless sites and articles comparing the original 'Valerie' from The Zutons to the Amy Winehouse with Mark Ronson cover. Zuton's singer Dave McCabe during an interview with the Guardian said about Amy Winehouse's cover [Winehouse’s and Ronson’s 2007 cover was recorded in New York, the last song cut for Ronson’s second album Version] “I don’t think it’s going to do very well, because we just had a massive hit with it and lightning doesn’t strike twice.” How wrong McCabe was. There are also a few versions of Amy Winehouse's 'Valerie'. I prefer this version ['68 version] track #6 from the album 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' released 2 December 2011. Background to Valerie: After "Valerie" became a success in the summer of 2006, it found an unlikely fan in Amy Winehouse, who was invited to contribute to a new project with Mark Ronson. He claimed Winehouse did not listen to anything written after 1967 and that she was struggling to come up with something that would fit the sessions for Ronson's upcoming album Version. After Ronson explained that the album would consist of soul covers of guitar records, Winehouse told him that she might try "Valerie", but Ronson found it very difficult to hear her voice singing that song in his head. "I wasn't sure how it would work, but she went into the studio and tried it. I loved it," he said. Ronson's production of the cover is based around the beat from the Jam's 1982 song "Town Called Malice". Winehouse also recorded a jazzier, acoustic version for Radio 1's Live Lounge, which was issued at the same time as the Ronson collaboration and a success in its own right, possibly due to download confusion, though it was the Ronson version that got airplay. The song has become something of a mixed blessing for McCabe. He said, "I certainly have to try hard sometimes to not think about 'Valerie'. The days it's in my head are when I have to put down the guitar and just forget about writing." [ref: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_(Zutons_song)#Mark_Ronson_and_Amy_Winehouse_version]
The drums in this version are simply amazing. They back up the stunning vocals perfectly. 👍🏻
