The New ARB Jack Ain't $#!+ - Five Minute Friday

  • This is the first negative review I've given and from one of the companies I've had the best experiences from. The new ARB Jack is overpriced and under performs as a replacement for the hi-lift but like all ARB gear is built to impress. I've owned more ARB products then probably any other single company and when it comes to there gear the only issue I've had till now is the weight. This is no different but has a host of hurdles to overcome to have the versatility of a Hi-Lift. So is it worth its weight? I'll let you decide.

      Thank you yeah I just wish I’d put my hands on it before I’d dished our the cash. I’ve had a lot of ARB gear over the years and have always been more then satisfied until this. Although to ARB standards in design they should have put some R&D into the functionality. Oh well it’ll be a pretty conversation piece for the shop.

    Thanks for the timing on this review; was just eyeing (or re-eyeing) the ARB jack recently and this info helps in that decision. I like the idea of this jack, but that price tag is just too high for what it is.

      Yeah if it was as versatile as the hi-lift I might say it’s worth $500/max and that’s still a little high but you can’t winch with it use it to brace broken parts it’s too nice to keep on the exterior of the rig so yeah a really really expensive shop jack🤷🏽‍♂️

    I bought this today, during testing on the garage floor the base slipped out and dented the driver's door, I'm unhappy with it and not confident in it anymore especially since with tax and a 5 year warranty from 4wp it was $930. Speeds up the time line in me getting half doors.

    You said that the jack doesn't work well in cold weather, but the vid you were showing showed lots of green vegetation and you were wearing a light jacket. This would imply cool weather, not cold. The jack must be just about unusable in actual cold weather.
    Gives one the impression that they didn't accomplish the very basics of the job like selecting an all weather oil or doing basic product testing.

      ARB is an Australian company so maybe they are not designing specifically for cold climates. Should be a warning to users however.

    Yep thats true the ARB is a One Trick Pony and will never replace the Hi-Lift, Oh and by the way The Hi-Lift has a Rated Load of 4660Lbs which is 600Lbs more than the ARB jack and each and every Hi-Lift is Tested to 7000Lbs and they can Winch 5000Lbs, hope that helps.

    Question: The provided instructions say not to store the ARB Jack on its side or it will leak. Yet they are all shipped on their side. They also are stored on their side at the distribution warehouse and in delivery trucks. Mine arrived covered in oil because of these reasons. Further, how are we to store the Jack outside the vehicle if it comes in a storage bag that is without mounting hardware and which causes one to assume that the Jack is to be stored IN the vehicle, where it almost always can only be stored on its side, because of its height? Why isnt there mounting hardware specific to the Jack, designed/sold by ARB that is 1) meant to be mounted on exterior and that, 2) incorporates theft resistant features (e.g. lockable hardware)? I'm in the states. These are very popular here but that is changing quickly. I just returned from the Overland Expo and my question above, includes the 2 most heard complaints about this product and are the reasons why so many are now turning to other products. The number 1 complaint however: storing this on its side should not allow oil to leak/this is a very poor design feature! I love ARB but this is money I'm now seeing that was poorly spent, due to an incomplete design and a lack of mounting options, which ARB should've addressed prior to releasing this product. ARB, please address these 3 things, or I fear ARB will see this products interest lose steam. ARB is a solid company but the mark was missed on this one big time.

      All good questions but unfortunately I don’t have any answers for you. I’m not affiliated with ARB in any way so I’m not privy to any info on their products these are just my own opinions in fact this is the first I’ve heard about the horizontal leaking issues. I’ve stored mine both ways without leaking but maybe I just got lucky or it wasn’t completely flat. Mine had the handle break during a recovery and almost left me stranded so I switched back to the hilft. Sorry I couldn’t answer your questions better but maybe reach out to ARB they’ve always been helpful when I’ve called in.

    Good review, but I thought I seen a vid were you were ranting about the whole overland community being really trendy and that it is turning into a elitist hobby which people with the most expensive gear are viewed as overlanders, yet you buy a 800 dollar jack because quite frankly it's made by ARB...Not trying to pick on you, but is seemed that your were trying to stray away from those people when you came out with that video. I know I do, I don't even use the damn overlanding word to describe myself or vehicles I own.. I am either wheeling, camping, hunting, shooting, etc... I don't ever want to label myself as a overlander because of all the overland bound zombies and UA-camrs that do this because they think there going to get 1k likes or whatever..

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes 5 років тому +3

      Don't let them folks get to ya just do you and call it whatever you want. Some folks feel the need to be part group and some folks prefer to box themselves in and make rules for other etc. Then you have folks that just wanna have a good time and do whatever they want without labels, that's kinda where I would place myself and sounds like you would too. One good thing about a broad term like overlanding or overland is it provides a good general term to find things both automotive and outdoors based imo

    • @oxoverlandfamilyadventures4656
      @oxoverlandfamilyadventures4656  5 років тому +9

      Well thank you for the comment but I believe the video you were referring to was the one where I was arguing both sides of the issue and as stupid as the video was in a lot of ways it’s the way I feel about it. On the one hand the fact that it’s more about the rigs and gear then the trips we take frustrates me because I feel like people are missing the point, kinda like when a toddler plays with the box instead of the toy. I mean sure the box is pretty and all but if you get to preoccupied with the fancy exterior you’ll never really appreciate real “Overlanding” unless you use these vehicles for what their built for. All that said I’m a gear head always have been and Overlanding from the beginning of time has always been about modifying your mode of transportation to suit living on the go, we got to see this first hand from the early pioneer wagons we ran across on the Oregon Trail so I also understand the appeal of craziness over super moded Overland rigs. But for me everything I do and put on my rig comes down to function and this Jack although I had assumed was like a high lift in its versatility was not at all and the point of the video was not for 1k likes it was to keep others from making the same mistake I did and buy something that’s not what it seemed. As for ARB I’ve owned a lot of their stuff and will always endorse them even though they are not a sponsor any more simply for the fact that I’ve never had a complaint until this Jack and if I’d done a bit more research I’d have avoided it all together so I hope that sheds some light on where I’m coming from and can maintain some credibility. Cheers
