  • This episode talks about how many branches to prune off your Dragon Fruit and how much to leave on.
    This is my tip for pruning Dragon Fruit branches.
    Check out the video for the full details!
    1 main Trunk, 3 to 5 Branches, at max 2-3 Sub Branches on those branches. Nothing else, Prune off all the branches that are below 20 inches from the top. This will create you that big nice canopy that “umbrellas” out once pruned this way. Pruning is best done when fruiting season is over. For me in California, that would be in the month of November.

    Hello Richard. Thank you so much for all information and knowledges that you are sharing. You inspired me to grow more df with different varieties. I have red and I think it is Vietnam white that I have for about 2 yrs now. I will try the yellow since my whole family love to eat df. The only problem that I have is I live in Houston and we kidda have winter sometimes. But I still trying. I will keep you posted. Thanks again Richard.

      Hi Kelly, thank you for watching and supporting my channel! I really appreciate it and it makes me happy that I’ve inspired you to grow more DF. You can find all the information you need here in my channel to be successful and if you can’t find something just let me know and I’ll be happy to make some content to cover your topic. Planting DF in pots can help save them in the winter if you have space in your shed or garage to keep them in. I know winter can be very hard to keep them alive. Good luck and keep me posted! 😊

    Thank you for the short and sharp sharing of how you keep your dragon fruit trees neat and tidy.
    1 stem cutting => 6 main branches => 6 + 6 x 3 =24 sub-branches => 1 fruit per branch => 24 dragon fruits :)
    I would like to seek your advice :
    1) How to prune the stems after fruit harvesting? Still, maintain at 24 sub-branches?
    2) Will the same stem produce fruit again once it had fruit in the previous season?
    3) Should we cut or keep for question 2)?
    4) When the branches are too long, should we cut them short? What is the ideal branch length?

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 років тому +11

      Hi LY Ngoh, you’re very welcome. I try my best to get straight to the point and explain as clearly as I can. Thank you for watching and supporting my channel!
      For the advice you are seeking for:
      1) I only prune the stem after harvest if the stem is completely depleted and spent of all nodes. Meaning if that branch looks beat up from holding buds/fruits, or if you had multiple buds but most of them aborted. Then I would take off that branch completely. But if I see that branch still has potential to put out new branches then I will leave them because that branch is mature and WILL produce buds/fruits again next season. They are the first to pop out buds when season comes in.
      2) Yes, Yes, and Yes!! That same stem will produce buds again next year and the next after that all the way until that branch no longer have nodes (the spikes on the branch). Once all the spikes have been used then that branch is no longer good and it’s time to prune that one off.
      3) Keep the branch unless it’s being blocked by new branches that’s hovering over it. Rule of thumb is, if the stem is crowded together and growing over each other. Prune the ones that’s at the very bottom being pushed down by other stems and blocking sunlight from getting to it. Stems produce buds when they are in contact with direct sun.
      4) Ideal branch size is whatever the size is that is easy for you to maintain. If you watch my most recent video that was posted today. There’s a branch that is only 5inches in length but it is mature enough to produce and hold fruits. I keep mine to a minimum of 20-24inches and would tip them to stop the growth and have them start to fill the stem with water and get them to be thicker and heavier. Then they are ready and prepares to produce buds when season comes!
      I’ll make a video on all these topics that you just listed once pruning season comes so you can visualize everything I’m telling you now. But here’s the tips for now just Incase you are wanting to prune soon. Pruning season for me starts around November, so be prepared to see that video around then! Happy gardening and I hope I answered your questions.

      Hi Alan, you can grow 4 branches in 1 pot. I just have 1 in this pot because at the time I only had 1 cutting of this variety. After seeing his much this one grows. I might keep it to only 1 branch to prevent it from growing so crazy. This one is such a vigor grower. It really depends on the variety and if you have time to do heavy pruning to maintain them.

      Not sure what the minimum is, but I do know that before it can support fruiting, it has to have significant growth bc of the fact that fruiting takes so much energy out of the plant.

      Dave, the only advantage is I have more control of what I would like to do to each dragon fruit. Certain fertilizers can help induce early budding/blooming. I like that each pot can have exactly what it needs when it comes to feeding time.

    I got a dragon fruit branch, it already got roots when it gave to me.. Is it okay to plant it using a dead lumber rather than soil? The dead lumber made into dust and it got worms living in it, would it be a good sign to put it as its soil? Because i want to make it as natural as it would grow.. No artificial fertilizer or any synthetic fertilizer.. Anyways, always loved your videos, hope that i would grow some of myself.. Just been starting a few days.

    I have planted some dragon fruit in a small part of my farm in October 2020. Cutting are difficult and expensive for me to get so I want to know when will my plants be big enough to take cuttings from.
    Will taking cuttings within the first 12 months result in these cuttings producing less fruit over the years than if I had waited for a couple of years to take cuttings from more mature plants?
    Will cuttings from young plants grow as quickly as cutting from mature plants, or will they take longer?
    I know more cutting from young plants will not take root and die, whereas cuttings from mature plants will have better survival rate. But if the cuttings from young plants survive will they produce the same quality and quantity as mature cuttings.?

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 років тому +6

      Hi Chin, If the branch looks like it still has 50% of the "spines" that haven't been used then I would leave the branch after it fruits. That branch will grow more buds next year because its a mature branch that already produce fruits. If the branch had a lot of buds and all the "spines" had a sprout and only 40% of it looks like it can produce new growth then I would prune the branch for the other branches to form new ones.

    If you didn’t cut it to send branches would the plant need to grow longer than normal to have fruit? I hear people say that the plant needs to be a certain weight to produce fruit. Also I have one that I didn’t branch out and it’s like 8ft in length but still hasn’t rounded at the end to indicate maturity to fruit.

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 років тому +1

      I’ve had success with getting fruits from just 4ft of growth and cutting the top to branch out. All of my trellis is 4-5ft tall and If you check out this video, I have a branch that is only 8-9 inches that is producing me a bud. ua-cam.com/video/97RSlrhbOME/v-deo.html . I don’t think weight has to do anything with them producing fruits. I feel as long as the cutting is 1 year or older with the right fertilization they will produce you fruits. Hope this helps clear some things up!

    Can you do a video about problems one might encounter when growing dragon fruit and possibly how to fix the issue? Like I have a sugar Dragon and it currently have is about 5 feet tall. It reached the top of the trellis but hasn’t branched out yet. But it already has 3 buds and the buds are about 2 1/2 weeks old. So another 2 1/2 weeks before blooming. But what I’ve noticed is that the stems are no longer plump like they used to be. The cutting that the 5 feet stem grew out from , the one that is in the ground is plump. But the stem that grew out from it is no longer plump like it used to be. I have other varieties growing in that same pot but they’re plump. I just don’t know why it’s just that one. Is it because it’s not getting enough water? I water twice a week. I have another sugar dragon growing in a different pot with 2 buds. But that one stayed plump. I’m just stumped as to why.

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 років тому +3

      Hi lemontea128, branches can sometimes be depleted because it’s using a lot of it’s reserve energy to produce buds. The buds are basically sucking the life out of that branch until it matures. This is why I always speak about the importance of fertilizing your dragon fruits year round so when budding season happens then branches are prepared to nurture the buds. It sounds like you just need to incorporate adequate fertilizing routine to help boost its strength and after the season you can get that branch to be plump again. I’ll be making a video of my fertilizing routine very soon. It’s almost time my Dragon fruits need to feed again. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and your garden! Don’t give up! It’s a learning process.

      Grafting Dragonfruit thank you so much! That makes sense. I’m guilty of only fertilizing during the growing months. I’m gonna have to step it up. Can’t wait for that video!

    anyone to help? we are starting to plant dragon fruits at a tropical country where the climate is humid and plants can grow vigorously: after some years of planting; the humidity inside the vines can be a hotbed for the pests? is there an organic way to control this? i.e. smart pruning? Thanks

      also, will the eyes (where the needs or buds come out) be budding more than once after pruning off the stems or flowers? what determines whether we get flowers off stems off the budding? Thanks vm.

    Do you prune at the end of your harvest season to get this pattern?
