📍 Montelukast is a bronchodilator drug, classified as a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It is used for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, but it is NOT used to treat an acute asthma attack. Montelukast is also used to treat allergic rhinitis, and to prevent exercise induced broncho constriction.
📍 Montelukast works by binding to leukotriene receptors in respiratory airways, and pro inflammatory cells, which blocks leukotriene from binding. This decreases inflammatory responses, such smooth muscle contraction, and airway edema. Adverse effects with montelukast are rare, but prolonged use of this drug, may cause behavioral changes like abnormal dreams, insomnia, agitation, or anxiety.
📍 Montelukast is a minor substrate of CYP450 3A4 and 2C9 enzyme, it is also a weak inhibitor of CYP 2C9 enzyme. Gemfibrozil can increase levels of montelukast, and lumacaftor can decrease the levels of montelukast.
