- I make a Metal Firepit to do Campfire and Dutch oven cooking with a swinging pot hanger - repurpose Scrap Metal Project.
I repurpose old rusty scrap metal, to make an outdoor cook station with a swinging pot hanger and my rebar crossbar with hooks and 4 loose butcher hooks also. We love open-fire cooking and Dutch oven cooking when we are camping, and now with this metal firepit cooking setup, we can do it all at home also, without the need to travel.
This was an enjoyable metalworking project for me, and even better is this project will be staying home with us, and I think will get quite a bit of use.
It is made from old rusty loading ramps for loading bobcat loaders onto a truck, and the metal is quite thick, it was to be scrap metal, but I saw the potential of a good project and now I have a metal fire pit.
It is quite heavy, it is 78 kg (171 pounds). I have a nice spot for this to sit and I don't think it will get moved much.
The main tools used were a MIG welder, angle grinder, drill, and bench vise.
Tools / Supplies, I often use are.

Who else in the whole World would have looked at those rusty old ramps and thought 'Hey, those would make the most amazing outdoor cooking set-up ever!' and then just do it!? I'm in awe. Beautiful, well thought out and clean work. Thank you for your inspiration.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it and I very much appreciate your comment.
Well said! This man is legit!
When that mind having those myself really great looking too efficient yeah
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Brilliant!
I know who would do it, this man in the video. 😁😁🤩🤩Absolute legend he is!!!
The most talented and creative person I have ever met is my Mother. She blows everyone's mind with the things she makes and creates. You remind me of her and I enjoy watching your videos!!!
Thank you very much, that sounds like a lovely compliment to me and your mother, I appreciate your comment Danny.
Go Mom and Gavin !
@@lightmarker3146 Yes Sir!!!
@@GavinClarkdiy what kind of wire welder u using I'm looking for an inexpensive one
@@derricksmiley8293 I am using a 240-volt, Unimig Viper 182, and I am using gas, it would be close to 3 years old now, and I am very happy with it. It has done all the MIG welding you see on this channel, prior to that I was using an arc welder.
Great project. We would love to see a follow up video showing it in use, describing all the features you put into it. Appreciate your skills so much !
Thank you very much, I am happy that you liked it. I will do a video with it with a nice fire and cooking at some stage, but that may not be for a while.
Bro! Pure genius! I’m all about efficiency - and the layout and versatility of your ‘artwork’ could revolutionize our concepts of outdoor cooking. If you ever decide to ‘kickstart’ this - I’M IN!
Thank you very much Joe, I appreciate your comment.
Just stumbled across this video. WoW! Doesn't be gin to describe the awe. The use of speed to get through the tedious bits was masterful.
Only a few words used, everything was just 'there'. Possibly one of the, if not THE best DIY videos on the intergoogle. You Sir are a Master!
WOW, thank you very much, I very appreciate your comment, and the feedback.
I’ve been watching you for quite a while now Gavin and I’m still in awe of your talent. I love the way you can hold my interest in each and every build thanks for bringing us along on this ride it was amazing
Thank you very much Bradley, I do enjoy what I am doing in the videos, so I guess that helps a lot. I very much appreciate your feedback.
Men, an outdoor campfire/kitchen! Was a cool built and genius! I live in Florida USA, I'll definitely put a roof over it! Outside under the rain and humidity that we have, it will last only 2 years! I like it! 👍
Thank you very much, I am happy that you liked it, I think it is a bit warmer and dryer here in Australia, Greetings from Australia.
What a great idea! Excellent job, Mr. Clark!!!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
It sure is nice to watch a man work who knows his craft. Great job!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
Absolutely beautiful job ❤
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it.
Just one suggestion: a trap door to sweep the ashes out into a bucket. Really like your ideas
A very nice idea, plus the gaps around the trap door would work as a drain, so I would not have had to drill the drain holes in the bottom, I like your idea, Thank you very much Marc.
Listen to this brave man. He’s the patriot , he’s an Englishman, he’s a born leader. Thank you Tommy for your courage.
This is a great achievement. Beautiful work and so well thought out. Thanks.

Outstanding. Not easily transportable but if left in a static location like a hunting camp. Perfect!!!!! Great work
Thank you very much. You are not wrong it is quite heavy, I have a nice spot for this to sit and I don't think it will get moved much.
Watching from a small town 50 miles south of Fairbanks Alaska. Skill and workmanship second to none!! Really enjoyed watching the video. Really appreciate how you didn’t bore us with a lot of talking. Fantastic! Looking forward to the next ones! Thanks!!

Hi Gavin. Nice project. Very practical too. It came out looking great! Much sturdier and more heavy duty than what you could buy in a store. You should get many years of use out of it. Thanks for the video!

You are very welcome Sarah, lamb shanks when you get here. Good to hear from you. Tell my little fan I said hello.
I have watched several of your videos , and the efficiencies of how you put things together making mistakes and correcting them on video you're absolutely a teacher.
Thank you and keep producing the videos at this level we all need to learn techniques for turning scrap and found objects into useful items.
In other words weapons into plow shears.

Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment. I love dutch oven food cooked on a fire, Cheers Victor
That was amazing. My late husband was a welder and I still love the smell of burning metal. I smiled while watching, absolutely enthralled at what you were doing, and wondered how many old ladies would be admitting your welds. Really great job. Thank you so much.

Great project Gavin! I learned a new trick on how to make a circle from flat bar! Thanks for posting the video and take care!

I tried to have this playing on my second screen while doing some work but I just can't stop staring at him work! 😄 Phantastic job!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
I have seen a lot of the things that manufactures and die-hard woodsman have made for cooking stoves, but this is seriously one best that I have seen. And I'm not basing that on the light weight, compactability, or other convenience of traveling with these things, but basing that on the durability, functionality, and general features
Thank you very much Tymzr, I appreciate your comment.
Your skills with an angle grinder are very impressive, sir. I learned a few things here. Thanks for sharing this👍
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it.
Dayum! That thing is awesome!

Gavin, your attention to detail, creativity and end design quality is appealing to see as you reveal. Your fit and finish is extraordinary! Keep it up!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
Very awesome video, full show of all it takes to achieve finished product. Lots, and lots of work and hours. More should be able to see things just like this so the rest can actually appreciate what it takes to make real life craftsmanship happen. God bless your energy to actually film your build project. Much appreciated by hands like yours. Peace always.

You Sir are an AMAZING craftsman ! My hats off to you...

Too COOL!! I stumbled across this & now subscribed. I enjoyed watching the progress & the finished product is fantastic. I used to use small torches for jewelry making lol but I think I might be able to hang with the big boys on this kinda project. 😉 Thank you

I've said it before Gav., you're a frickin genius mate....thanks for sharing

Fantastic. You're officially my favourite metal working channel. Making things I have a chance of making in my backyard with basic equipment.
Thank you very much, Welcome to the channel, I wish you the best for your projects.
@@GavinClarkdiy thanks very much. I've been watching for a while but only realised that other metal working channels are about welding or using equipment you don't find at home. And I like your artistic perspective.
@@Goalsplus Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
They used to have manditory metal shop for all boys where I went to school. Tool making, etc is an artform. And a useful one. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. They had it at the school I went to here in Australia, it was not mandatory, as you had a few classes to choose from woodworking cooking, etc I did metalworking and loved it.
What a piece of art! I guess it's been 20 years since my last project. My tilt was toward trailers and BBQ pits. Everything I cut back then was torch, porta-band saw and Dewalt chop saw (like yours but older model). I acquired a plasma cutter, which was a dream come true. I never would've thought of using a grinder with a cut off wheel. That's all I see now. Now that I'm retired, I plan on breaking out the old tools and getting back into it. Going to have to get a bucket of those wheels and figure it out. Great project mate!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment. I try to just use simple tools on the channel if I can, I wish you the best for your future projects.
Thanks for the great content, you have such a great imagination and skill base. I have been watching you for a little while and i enjoy your builds, the way you use recycled bits and pieces makes for more interest and i too am captivated until the end of the build. Looking forward to the next one, cheers.
Thank you very much Brett, I am glad you like my work, and I appreciate your comment.
Hello Gavin, it really is an excellent job, you have a lot of ingenuity, skill and neatness in the details, it shows that you know your trade and your tools. A very big greeting from Argentina.

I love this! I was hoping to see it in action at the end, to be honest. I would love to see the function of each piece so that I can fully appreciate your work. I hope that's not asking too much.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it. I will do a video with it with a nice fire and cooking at some stage, and using all the bits involved, that may not be for a while.
@@GavinClarkdiy : I was also hoping to see it in use.
@@GavinClarkdiy I was also curious about how it might be used... a few years back I built an outdoor cooking fireplace... went a different route to get to cooking spaces for my cast iron... I did a free stacking of cement blocks, bricks a pavers of different types and did an outer and inner shell to the fireplace, cut t-posts to create shelves to support 6x6 inch pavers into 12 inch wide very thick shelves that would hold Dutch ovens on their legs above a roaring fire on the lower shelf and and upper shelf that would hold a couple hundred degrees Fahrenheit for 2 quart Dutch ovens to bake cakes at... the lower shelf was good for roasting and stews in my larger Dutch ovens... I never did the hanging of Dutch ovens without the Lodge tripods and those wouldn't fit in my cooking fireplace... they would work well over my Solo Stove firepits and camping Stoves... I would think your design would fit inside the huge castle sized fireplaces... not something we are allowed to have indoors here due to air quality issues of fireplaces... so if your design was built for outside I am curious about the fire management half of the design... a half fire pit or open fireplace situation... with reflective back walls and maybe a covered area over where the cook and guests might enjoy the fire.... I went with an offset patio umbrella setup... I considered an off set metal awning, just a bit out of smoke and sparks of a roaring fire... the patio umbrella has survived for about a decade of use... very curious about how your design works in practice.
@@lethaleefox6017 Your system sounds great, with mine, the hardwood log fire goes on top, and you use a shovel to put nice red hot coal from the fire to build a mound to sit the dutch oven on next to the fire and also put hot coals on top of it, if needed to heat or brown the top of what you are cooking, you adjust the heat by using more or less hot coals while the fire continues to burn next to it, if you need more coals they will be there in the fire, the grid is heated the same way. This is outside so smoke is not a problem, with no back on the unit many people can sit all the way around it during or after the cooking just sitting around the fire into the night. Thank you for your comment.
@@GavinClarkdiy I was picturing in my mind paver patio space a bit like what I free stacked my cooking fireplace on....12x12 inch pavers on leveled ground and plastic under a paver patio flush with grass level to reduce lawn mowing issues (10x12 foot patio) and maybe a low wall to reduce flying spark issues... a lot of the woods I use can pop sparks... or a shallow spacious fire pit with paved flooring (sitting height) ... a lot of possible landscape solutions for dedicated fire spaces outside.
That is never going to break down because of using it over and over,I like the way you made it I love the shape that you did and all the accessories that can be used doing different things that is a must have and you are lucky to have the knowledge to make them congratulations nice piece wish I could have one like that relax and cook your food
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment.
Amazing work/craft, tyvm.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it, and I appreciate your comment.
Don’t know about safety, mate, you seem to still have all of your parts in working order! Beautiful project. I hope you have a sturdy crew to move that beast about. I really admire your free-hand cutting skills welding skills, and designer’s vision of what can be built out of “scrap” metal. Well done!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment.
I watch guys like you and I am in absolute awe of your skills and talent. This metal firepit project was just insane. Not only practical but you make it look so easy to make (which I will NOT try to do). My birthday is coming up soon ..... (subtle hint) 🙂🙂
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment. Happy birthday Mike.
Awesome. You make it look so easy.
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment.
Great work Gavin MAD skills indeed !!
Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment.
Crafted such sturdy; it can also resist Martian hurricanes. Beautiful idea. Also, the sound during welding the grill (16:30 and 19:15)) was like a "symphonic couplet". It would be a nice song if I had the ability to convert to notes. 😪
Thank you very much, yes I don't think this will blow away easiely. Those sounds of welding do all sound just a bit different to the one before it, you have good ears, and a very interesting idea, I don't have any music ability to put it together either. I appreciate your comment.
Awesome work Gavin. ya know that would look really nice in my back yard here in Florida. LOL, kidding, not kidding hahaha... You never cease to amaze me on your builds. One thing I wonder is how when bending your round bar do you keep the angles parallel and meet up for the final weld. are you laying it flat prior to the next bend or do you pound it level behind the scenes? seems like you make all of your 90° bends, and they always seem so level and meet up in the end. if that makes sense? Can't wait for your next video, keep'm coming mate!!
Thank you very much, I am happy that you liked it. My vise hangs over at the ends so most of the time I can bend it in line with where it needs to be bent and I can see down to the previous bend to get the line straight, but in saying that there are times when adjustments need to happen after the bend to get it right, I normally do this using the vise using a pipe or hammer, not pounding it against the bench. PS when I made the 4 butcher hooks I did not adjust anything while making them in the vise bit of the video, BUT I did straighten them before the final shot where I hang them on the rail, so they all sat nicely together. Every one of the nails needed some sort of adjustment. I use the square a lot to check my 90 bends are 90 before I move on to the next bend as that is the time to do it it is easy to bend it back or forward a bit while it is still in the vise held at the same spot as the original bend, before moving on, plus I can slide the pipe on it then. (You will see in the background, my square moving around on the bench in bits of my videos during bends and everything I do "watch for it, every time it has moved I have checked something"). In saying that, a lot is cut out of the video trying to speed it up, eg there were many hours of video taken to make this, and I got it down to 46 min. I hope that helps a bit Ron.
This was an eye opener I'll try to make something close to it thanks for the idea.
Thank you very much, I wish you the best for your project.
Man, I should be awed of your craftmanship (which I am) but I am more amazed of the fact that you could come up with this idea! Absolutely brilliant!
