Aging blows. Spills like that I used to just shake off and keep on going. Now, just the silliest of missteps and I'm gibbled sometimes for weeks. Totally feel for you, John. Hope you get better soon.
Im very glad you made this video! My father just asked me to make him a set like this and I've never done it before. Very informative about the process for efficiency.
I've got a set very similar to what you have made. A blacksmith over here in Australia made mine. It is so handy to cook on around the campfire. Being all hand made like yours are, they are a work of art.
Good Morning , John I am Sorry to see your Knee ! Hope you Heal , Quickly ! As for the Camp Set you make , Great work for a handicapped Man , Bad pun , I Know ! But it would be the Talk of the Campsite ! Heal Quickly and Be Safe ! Keep Hammering !
This sort of fire set was the first project I ever hammered out.I made the tripod, pot hanger, the hooks, and skewers,... I made four or five and managed to make enough to pay for the rental of the forge. Of course now i have my own forge.
Mr. Swirtzer, I hope I spelled that correctly. You are honestly very informative and influential to me. I haven't commented on alot of videos but yours are extremely helpful to me. Thank you for the great work you do and for inspiring me every day. I try to get out to my shop whenever I can and I always wear my safety glasses.

Always enjoy watching your videos. I have 6 sets of tripods from 6' down to 15 inches. Used them for many years doing reenacting and just camping. Now, I have about 200 pounds of metal cookware and all the accouterments that just sit in boxes in my lower garage . Always did enjoy cooking for 30 or more people.
Very much looking forward to the rest of this series. I make tripods very similar to this one as they are always good sellers. Take it easy on that knee and I hope you have a speedy recovery.
Thanks, John. Looking forward to more campfire cooking gear. The ability to make my own campfire and chuckwagon cooking tools has been a major motivation in my desire to learn the craft of blacksmithing.
Nice set of camping tools there. I make a similar set that has a loop at the end of each stake. I run a chain through them when used as a tripod, but usually I set them up similar to how you prefer to use them. I also made two brackets that slide onto the two uprights before they are hammered into the ground. They can slide up, and down on the bar, and I use sections of chain to adjust the bight of them. One has sort of a curved hook that holds the cross bar, the other has a sort of square hook that does not allow the bar to rotate. It's basically an adjustable rotisserie set. Also I hope your leg gets better soon. Take it easy, and don't push it to hard! 👍 Best wishes.
"How deep depends on how solid your ground is." LOL! AND on how many of your personal inventory of S-hooks you suddenly realize you have lost, sold, or given away since your last event!!!
Boy oh boy... Just exactly what i was waiting for. Twisty, turny irons for the camp fire. Looking forward to seeing your take on the rest of the bits to finish out the kit
So sorry about your injured knee. I know how that goes. Thank you so much for this particular vid. I’ve been looking to make something similar. I enjoy campfire cooking, and would watch an offshoot channel on that subject. Heal up proper, and keep being you. Thanks again for the information you throw out into the world.
Geesh! John second injury since I began watching your channel. Hey, rock work is hard work ... esp. in the name of a video. Take care hope the knee heals well. It sucks when we age and our body doesn't keep up with what our mind thinks we can still do. Oh to have green bones of the youth. Then again, green bones and green minds go together. Hmm? John I hope you can continue to get out to your yard, but stay safe and wear your knee brace. I Fire Irons look great. Thanks for the video.
Nice video John. I feel for you with your knee. A couple of years ago I fell off a ladder and ruptured the patella tendon. I had a series of leg braces for about three months. Not a time I remember fondly.
Just started watching. Backed out of first video to subscribe and hit the all notifacation bell. Great video AWESOME work. GREAT CRAFTSMANSHIP! Well Done look forward to watching all your old videos. And beg for new ones. Swing well and true.
I always wondered about how blacksmithing was like in the production sense and how it could be possible to get started in making the thing profitable. This seems easy enough, take away the power hammer and with a little DIY welding I can see myself trying it out.
I was making these before I had the hammer. So a hammer isn't required. Mostly it allows you to work longer days without wearing out swinging a hand hammer.
HI JOHN grate video sorry about the knee mate but as they say you can not keep a good man down so take it easy mate and I hope you get well soon cheers
Hey buddy feel better soon. Have to take care of yourself every year it seems to take longer and longer to heal up. The golden years hahaha. ......paul
Take care of that knee as the experts tell you, otherwise you will need an after-market one. Splendid project though. You can even spit a medium size animal or haunch, using the eye to fix the rotation at the correct spot with a pole for a while.
I made a fireplace poker set. Prey bars. Its better than the store made stuff. Thongs, Meat hooks, Block Ice thongs, Hay bail handles, Tomatoes steaks, out them them. Camping fire pot legs, with a grill under it, and things from them> List goes on and on. All of this will be handed down from me, To My Family for Generation to Generations to come. BUT RIGHT NOW! I'am USING THEM 🤣 👍👍
Oouuch! Sorry about the knee. I hope it heals quickly for you. I'd love to see you make a meat spit. I'm struggling with mine at the moment and I could use some pointers. Great video as usual!
You definitely get a "HOT" workout every day. Iron smithing is hard and tiring hot work(as you know)But your stuff sure is nice and tis nice to keep doing and teaching these kind of things. I'm glad you are willing to share because there are so many folk that don't know much about how stuff can be made. I once was in a gift shop in Cody Wyoming that had a few metal forged and welded items for sale.A door knocker is what it was under the sign. The sign above the items said something like,"ABSOLUTELY NO PHOTOS of metal items ALLOWED">>then it read>> if you want to find out what is inside of your cell phone or camera, just take a photo of these items and I will show you what is in there myself. yea..... we didn't buy darn thing from that place.Took our business elsewhere to someone who hopefully wasn't as much of an arsh..I know, I should be that tight(:.. Glad you are such a good teacher!Keep it up!
@@BlackBearForge I've spent a good person of my own life in braces, casts, and the like. Still can't stay away from the horses or out of the shop. Hope I'm like you when I get to your age. You're an inspiration.
I friggin love blacksmiths! A trait that actually requires skill. Also relaxing to watch.
Aging blows. Spills like that I used to just shake off and keep on going. Now, just the silliest of missteps and I'm gibbled sometimes for weeks. Totally feel for you, John. Hope you get better soon.
Injured leg and still working thats the reason this is my fav you tube channel. Get well soon sir greetings from India
Im very glad you made this video! My father just asked me to make him a set like this and I've never done it before. Very informative about the process for efficiency.
I made a couple sets of these. One was for my brother for when he takes his grandson camping.
Thanks for the video. Hope your leg gets better soon.
I've got a set very similar to what you have made.
A blacksmith over here in Australia made mine.
It is so handy to cook on around the campfire.
Being all hand made like yours are, they are a work of art.
that looks like it would be perfect for a rotating spit roast!!!

Luckily I didn't actually fall, just an odd twist and a pulled muscle
Very nice :-) looking forward to seeing more camping gear, I do hope your knee heals quickly. Take care John
Thank you for sharing your production tips. I have made several of these, and had several of the same steps as you, but had not thought a few of them.
Fantastic vid sir!
Thasnks
Nice video John. I feel for you with your knee. A couple of years ago I fell off a ladder and ruptured the patella tendon. I had a series of leg braces for about three months. Not a time I remember fondly.
Luckily this one isn't that bad and is getting much better
One good thing about your knee injury......it wasn’t your hammer hand. Nice project John, and wishes for a fast heal.
⚒️👊⚒️ Pat from Belgium
I made a set of these as one of my first blacksmithing projects. They are quite usable, but not nearly as appealing to the eye as yours!
Get well soon! Thanks for vids.
2 fishing rod stands with that shape, a stick on top, done! 😂
That is awesome, I love your style.... Thanks for the demo...
John, @9:50 when doing the second one, think your twist went in the opposite direction from the first one.🐾🔥⚒
Awesome video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the video. I make mine with 2 loops and 1 "h" bar.
I also fell this week, and are all gimped up.
Just started watching. Backed out of first video to subscribe and hit the all notifacation bell. Great video AWESOME work. GREAT CRAFTSMANSHIP! Well Done look forward to watching all your old videos. And beg for new ones. Swing well and true.

I made a different set for use with the Boy Scouts. The bar was a back set for cooking grates that stuck out in front of the bar over the coals.
Hope your well be safe!
HI JOHN grate video sorry about the knee mate but as they say you can not keep a good man down so take it easy mate and I hope you get well soon cheers

I'm jealous. We don't have rocks here. LOL
Hope your leg heals quickly!
Hey John, sad to see you in that brace. Hope you get well soon. God bless.
Half the people I know have a brace for one thing or another at this age. Just part of the price of doing instead of watching I suppose.
@@BlackBearForge I've spent a good person of my own life in braces, casts, and the like. Still can't stay away from the horses or out of the shop. Hope I'm like you when I get to your age. You're an inspiration.
Another set-up I've seen is to make two bars with CLOSED circles and ONE with the hook.
I hope for a quick recovery.
Excellent video John.. God's healing grace for the knee and patience for "Mrs. John"..😉
I just made a set of 5', 5/8 round 2 days ago! Got the ring too small though.
