I close my eyes and I am taken back to 1974 again to when I saw Genesis play this song. I’ve seen so many bands who play their music but The Watch are the only ones that sound completely like the original Gabriel era Genesis. WONDERFUL. Grazie mille. 🙏
@@davidallen117 Mr. David Allen? Back from the grave with barely a vowel missing! ;-) Yes sir, I have indeed, many, many times. I had tickets for the upcoming 'The Lamb' show before Kung Flu scuppered it but I think they are still valid for when it does happen again so we will see. I saw them up in Lisbon on their last tour and it was amazing, not least because the auditorium there at the university is a convertable lecture theatre/function suite and so the first however many rows of seats were literally armchiars really close up to the stage. I also saw them do The Lamb some years ago, more years ago than I can remember, in Amsterdam I think it was. That was quite weird because I had originally seen Genesis for my one and only Gabriel-era show on the ill fated The Lamb tour and so it was very special for me. But I must say though that IMHO The Watch sound MUCH more faithful to the Gabriel-era Genesis than The Musical Box, mainly as a result of the singer's voice and the sheer brilliance of their guitarist - they're all amazing musicians and it's so clearly a passion with them. I think that The Musical Box's guitarist is possibly their "weak" link - if you can call being extremely skilful and proficient in any way "weak"... he's VERY good but the guy in The Watch is simply stunning. The Watch do not make that much effort to mimic the original show's lighting, costumes and effects though, it's JUST the music. That said both Steve Hackett and his brother often play with The watch so although they aren't sanctioned as such by the real band they are clearly very well respected. They have made several albums of their own work too and in their home country (Italy) they play more of their own work than they do the Genesis tribute thing. Have you ever seen G2: Definitive Genesis? They used to be great until their singer died but sadly they've gone downhill rapidly for me and I've lost all interest in them now. Cheers sir... PS I had the pleasure of discussing The Musical Box and tribute bands in general with Phil Collins once and he was so unbelievably positive. He told me that he thinks it is great that The Musical Box actually put more bums on seats in The Albert Hall than they did in the corresponding period!
Almost 50 Years ago , I saw this played live by GENISIS , in Quebec City . And it still make me very proud to see that we all still LOVE this timeless music
@@briane5706 except the ripping lead guitar parts (by Hackett) Edit: I deleted a comment before this that said basically “Hackett wasn’t ahead of his time” - no one replied specifically to it
@@briane5706Interesting. Can you back that up? AFAIK there are no extant recordings with Mick Barnard, and no evidence that the song was "completed". Steve Hackett himself reports that he was present at Mick Barnard's last concert with Genesis - having a tape of THAT show would be amazing! Tony Banks made the following comment about Barnard's guitar playing: "He was OK, but not really forceful enough. I remember when we had already auditioned Steve but were still rehearsing with Mick which wasn't a very nice thing to do, we were doing the end part of "The Musical Box" and he was playing this little guitar phrase over the top of it and we thought this was really good. So just as we were about to boot him out he did something quite good." Alas, no-one seems to know if that "something quite good" was taken over by Hackett.

This was my first glimpse of Genesis and symphonic rock. At the time in 1973, I was into hardrock like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath with lots of guitars and heavy drumming. I "hated" calm music. I regularly went to my local music shop to look for and listen to new music. I saw the Genesis live album and it looked interesting. The song starts very calm and normally I would have stopped listening after 30 seconds but there was something that made me continue to listen to it. And after 3,30 I was rewarded with the heavy part. I was hooked. I bought the record and it is still one of my favorites. It opened up the world of symphonic rock (as we called it then, nowadays it is progressive rock) I found Gentle Giant, Yes, PFM, Camel, King Crimson and many more.
