Totally agree. Even the dealership mechanics have to think this is a ridiculous amount of work to change a battery. Thank you richpin06a for this video or I might still be out in the driveway cursing.
You're a lifesaver. Thank you for making this video!!! Perfect camera angles, clear explanations, no frills, gets right to the point. The perfect tutorial.
Brian Henderson I could not agree more! For a second time, the headlights were left on, draining the battery completely! Without this tutorial, it would’ve been a several-hundred dollar experience! Thank you so much!
Great video! Bad Design Ford! When I was done, I had an issue with the wipers being out of sync and hitting each other, not because I didn't mark them but because the motors lose their memory when the battery is disconnected. Here is the solution from the escape forum. 1. Turn on ignition and ensure wipers are off and turn ignition off. 2. Remove both wiper arms completely. 3. Turn on ignition and then turn wipers on first setting for a 'sweep' and when the wiper motor (spindles) stop turn off wipers but leave ignition on. 4. Replace wiper arms in the correct position ensuring you don't alter the spindle position setting which should be locked anyway as long as the ignition is on. 5. Try wipers again.
Sir, you are a credit to humanity, the harder way is usually the best way, it's a lot of part removal, but well worth it. I appreciate your level of detail, and the wealth of information you provide, very concise.
This is by far the BEST HOW TO VIDEO I'VE SEEN. I couldn't imagine that replacing this battery would be such a pain in the --- ! When you go to but the battery at the parts store the clerk tells you their computer reads MUST BE INSTALLED BY A PROFESSIONAL. So in other words FORD wants you to bring it to the dealership so they can charge you a lot of money for a replacement. Ohh and while your there don't be surprised when they find a bunch of other things you need to have fixed! So follow these instructions in this video step by step! You can do this yourself! I am Grateful for this person having made this easy to follow video. To you I say Thank-you and Bravo Sir !!! Excellent JOB!
Thank you so much for this video! You saved my family at least a couple hundred dollars by showing me how to do this myself. My wife worked an 18hr shift and came out to a toast battery. She's a Sergeant in Corrections. I was able to buy a battery and change it out in 20mins and I am certainly not a mechanic. This was in January in the Northeast 20 degrees out. Time was a factor for sure. Thanx again!
Phenomenal. I shuddered when I saw the battery placement after it died in the parking lot of a deserted restaurant. 25-30 min of your clear and easy instructions and I was set.
This is a 10-15min job if you follow this video, very simple if you have any mechanical abilities. You may have to rock on the wiper blades to get them to pop off but the cowl and drain pan pull right off. I had to make due with wrenches where I was located so if you do not have a socket set handy it is not required. Great video with perfect explanations to prep you for this task.
Thank you so much. Had a battery expert come and tell me that I had to take it to the dealer 🧐 and that it will take about 45 minutes. Thanks to your video it took me about 15 minutes tops and it’s easier than it looks. Thanks again 👏🏼🤙🏼
One of the few jobs that I've ever done where everything went as planned. I checked to see if I could get the wipers off easily before buying the battery. This was easy and actually kind of enjoyable. A nice pair of work gloves helped a lot during certain steps. Thanks.
Maybe you could just add a little mention in the video regarding the wiper blades and how you should mark their position before taking them off and a quick little label on them separating driver side and pass. side blades. Saves time repositioning them without using guesswork. Thank you for such a terrific video and being clear and to the point! Helped me greatly! 🙏🥰
This video helped tremendously! There was a lot if corrosion on the posts of the old one. Following up on your follow up, my 2013 Escape SEL must have a default save because it never asked for a security code nor did I have to resave radio stations. The time was about 4 hours off though. I asked the ford techs later and the tech said that there is a memory set on the battery that is programmed to the battery and learned the charge ability. Once you change the battery, he said I will need to have FORD rest it or over time the computer will relearn the cranking ability. All and all the job took me about 45 minutes.
My wife went out to start her Escape today and the battery was shot. Battery light was showing up on the console and no turn on the engine. I watched your video and thought to myself, how in the hell am I going to do this? I am not the most mechanically inclined person. But, I did it step by step and had it all done with the new battery installed in no time. Thank you for the great video.
Thanks so much. My teenagers escape battery died in the evening and I had to change the battery at night with kid holding the light. Thanks to your video I had it swapped in less than an hour.
You are a great instructor. Your instructions are very clear and even someone with zero experience like me could follow and get the job done. Well done!!!
Thank you. Changing the battery was a breeze thanks to this video. I am a novice at car repairs and the replacement went without a hitch. Thanks a million. (2015 Ford Escape)
I just went to buy my battery and I nobody want to do it they said I need to take all that out first I should never bought this car all that for a battery it should be a simple thing
Great video. Appreciate the simple, clear explanations, and the fact that you explain what the next step is and any issues with it BEFORE doing it (such as the fact that there are clips you cannot see on the back/underside of the cowl).
Thank you for this guide Richpin. Went to crank my wife's Escape and had to jump it, when I opened the hood and saw where the battery was, I was dumbfounded.. Went to buy a new battery at the auto store and the man said he'd go ahead and change it for me. Well, he was in for a surprise too, neither of us had ever seen such a buried battery box. This guide showed us how to get it done
Nice video and made my new battery install easy considering Ford messed up on location no doubt . I would have never bought a escape had we known this is 2016 29k later battery bad
Thank you so much for this, at first I thought this was going to be more difficult so I tried doing it via the air filter method, give up, tried your way and found that it was a lot easier and more straightforward - especially because of your helpful video.
Had to have this battery replaced on my wife's 2015 Escape today (Nov. 19, 2019), they used the "remove the air box" method. $222 for battery and labor.
Excellent how-to video. This method provides access to the firewall enabling installation of a subwoofer power cable to the positive battery terminal. Thank you!
Are you kidding me? Compared to replacing spark plugs in a transverse V6 engine, this is like a "walk in the park", besides you will PROBABLY have to do this once every FIVE years! If you CAN'T accomplish this, you need to use public transit!!
@Bob Hovan they did the same thing to the Lincoln MKC (same platform) . It took me forever last night because there were a ton of trim pieces other than what was in the video because Lincoln had it setup a little bit differently.
What a pain!!! Thanks for the video and thanks to the great designers at Ford..... I stopped into AutoZone and the employee and I had to watch this video to figure out what the heck we were going to have to do to get to this thing. Why did they just not stick it in the back with the spare tire!!!???!!!
Great video. Made it easy. Only problem I had was that the wipers were frozen on the spindle. Had to use a puller to loosen them. The instructions and the video were just superb? Thank you.
Very thorough. Made switching out my battery fairly easy. Now, if the engine compartment wasn’t so cramped that the battery has to be shoved under the windshield...🤔
Thanks so much for this perfect explanation. I was scratching my head when I took off the cover and your video really helped. All done. Much appreciated!
What a great job you did recording this video. You've convinced me that I will only have my battery replaced by the dealer, which I'm sure was their intent.
This was a life saver. This is the DEFINITIVE version. I bled all over my moms car changing the dang battery. I just wish I had not messed with the wipers. They are just attacking each other now. Is there a video about re-calibrating wipers?
Excellent video, only took me 90 minutes - 20 of those spent looking for my metric set...lol Nice tip btw marking the wiper locations, I was more concerned with just getting to the battery would have forgot wipers original placement.. Thank you very much!!!!
After watching this excellent video I went out and banged it out in less than an hour. Piece of cake. But you gotta have the right tools ready to go. No way was I going to do the air filter box nightmare.
Oh, my. I own a 2014 Escape. I knew I would have to take the car apart when the time comes, And I thought the 1956 Cadillac had a tough battery replacement situation (engine hoist strongly recommended). My 2014 Dodge Journey requires some disassembly of the car, too. I sure can pick 'em. Thanks for your help.
Thanks a bunch for the video! It totally bailed me out. I looked at it on the lemon escape that the stealership here in town sold us less than a year ago and slapped my forehead. Then came across your video and it saved me from spending all afternoon on it instead of about an hour.
I can't believe how much work there is to changing the car battery. Is this the result of Ford having a better idea? And usually batteries go bad in the winter months so that makes the job even more difficult if you don't have a garage to work in.
CP240sx I love it how manufacturers are making it very hard to change something simple that way not every average Joe can do and then end up braking or fry a wire and then decide to finally take it to a tech. I get a lot of those and to fix there issues that they cause I charge extra or simple don't do it.
Changing a front end light bulb (any of them) on my 2016 Fusion requires removing the bumper, & changing the cabin air filter requires removing the dash. Just more reasons why buyers look elsewhere when purchasing.
That is NOT the way to change that Battery !!! Remove the Air Filter Housing.....Loosen the front wall of battery box and position out of the way.....remove the battery bracket and slide battery forward and remove cables from battery....replace battery and reinstall in reverse order. Done ! No need for unnecessary parts removal . And Yes, I work in service at a Ford dealer. Have a nice day.
Your video was super helpful! Thanks so much for being clear with your descriptions and changing the camera angles to show what’s happening. Great tutorial!
This is ridiculous that these engineers would design a battery that you can't get too. Anyway regardless thank you so so much for this video!!! Just took me and hour and a half to do haha so I'm very grateful for this
Important detail here ! We had Les Shwab change ours which we had no clue it’d be so complex, of course it took longer than expected and sensed some grumbles from the young inexperienced mechanic dude. Then, much later, when the rain came and wipers were engaged, all hell broke loose and they go tangled up and seized up. Reminder that when you turn on wipers, usually, it because they are needed… not a fun moment ! So, it now turns out that there is a very important fact that the wipers MUST be resyncronized when battery has been disconnected and/or the arms have been removed ! This started a new adventure getting that straightened out along with learning that new wiper arms do not have splines… Now, there is a significant rain water leak into the driver side foot compartment which is not a sunroof or AC drain related, which has to be resolved. Take away : this all must’ve began with the battery replacement so ya’ll please do mind the wiper syncro procedure after replacing battery !!!!
You can remove the battery by, first removing the 4 screws holding the air filter box cover, then remove the air filter, remove the 4 screws holding the air box, loosen the hose clamp that is holding onto the air box, unplug the sensor, remove air box, remove front of battery box, then remove battery strap and take off neg/pos cables, and remove battery without touching the cowl. The cowl can be used to hold your tools and beer while working do not remove it.
This video helped me a ton. Thanks for the excellent work. Looked at the other method as well. This one seemed simpler. For the most part it was. A lot of steps but nothing too difficult.
One of the best videos out there for this subject. Easy step by step instructions, great editing of the video. Thank you, makes the job go as painless as possible.
I appreciate the video but can you guys thumb this up... First turn wipers on to "park" them. Follow video instructions when reinstalling blade arms make sure you are not moving/reindexing the arm to the motors... Driver side goes on top (if you have turned the motors when reinstalling... You will Need to "park" the wipers again) conveniently enough there are marks on the windshield that look like capital letter "i" or H sideways. Learn from my mistake. When you are done shut hood lift arms off windshield and turn key on.. Wipers will move a bit... Then cycle the wipers make sure they are not egregiously off.
Thank for the video...This was the last straw on Ford, my 2016 Taurus rides horrible, now this with my wife's 2016 SUV. No more Fords for me.and we are getting ready to buy new vehicles.
I watched a couple of similar videos using this procedure and I do not agree with this method. I removed the connections for the air cleaner box ( four screws to get to the filter ) one wire clip, one hose clamp, put the filter and pull the base of the filter box off the 3 push pins; the front panel of the battery box lifts off and can be moved forward, I also unplug the (blue) central cable from the fuse box, I undo the ground cable from the firewall. The hardest thing to get to is the battery clamp nuts and they are fairly easy. I have replaced 2 batteries in a Ford Escape.
Agree with this. On my 2.0 it was 6-8mm screws, the cable going to the fuse box, unbolt the brace holding the battery down, and removing the terminals. Had the battery out in 30 minutes and that was my first time doing it. probably be 20-25 minutes the next time.
Watching this because my battery is bad . When buying the car I didnt give this a thought. I would have never bought this car if I knew this. Changing the oil is a pain as well.
Need to show re attachment of wiper arms. You must cycle them once via accessory key position leaving the key on while positioning and tightening them down. Otherwise they'll not be in time, may break and possibly scratch windshield.
Amazing video, I tackled it using this method and it went rather smoothly. One thing, how did you reset the BMS? I read the manual and said it had to be reset, looked up online and I ended up having to take it to the dealer and STILL pay 75+ just to have the BMS reset... Is it necessary? I hear it's a must to save your alternator and battery in the long run..
Beatlesfantoo is right. You can change the battery in about 20 minutes by just pulling out the air filter box. All you need is a flathead screwdriver and a 10 mm socket w/ ratchet. Use the flathead to loosen the hose clamp on the air filter intake. Remove the top of the air filter box. Pull out the bottom half of the air filter box, which is just plugged in by 3 rubber plugs underneath. Remove the positive cable from the battery (10 mm) and protect the battery post. The front of the battery box: lift it about 1/2 inch and then pull it forward/tilt it down. Remove the 2 top (10 mm) battery clamp nuts and remove the battery clamp. Pull the battery forward a little, and free the 2 negative battery cables from the back part of the battery cover. Now you can pull out the battery much further, and detach the wiring from the negative post. It's outpatient instead of major surgery!
Ford should fire the design team that came up with this. Pulling a battery on any other car is usually a 2 minute job.
exactly... f..ing idiots. they are... real joke.. try changing this at - 25 celsius in a winter cold...
@@frankj4398 Take the wipers off to get to the battery???? Seriously?
I totally agree. I called Ford today and they want $60 to replace the battery.
100% agree. I own one and I also found out that adding some coolant is almost impossible as well. What the hell were they thinking.
Totally agree. Even the dealership mechanics have to think this is a ridiculous amount of work to change a battery. Thank you richpin06a for this video or I might still be out in the driveway cursing.

did you have to reprograme the system
my question to any one please or should i just pay ford to do
I can’t thank you enough for making this video. Not only with the step by step rubdown but calling out the bolt sizes too helped tremendously.
Thanks so much. My teenagers escape battery died in the evening and I had to change the battery at night with kid holding the light. Thanks to your video I had it swapped in less than an hour.
This took me and my wife 30 min to complete. Thank you you made it easy
Glad i could help.
You are a great instructor. Your instructions are very clear and even someone with zero experience like me could follow and get the job done. Well done!!!
Great presentation. That Ford design team should be publicly executed for stuffing the battery in such a rediculously hard to access location.
You think there could be a better place.
Thanks ford for making this the most amount of steps to change a car battery I've ever encountered.
When I saw were this battery was in my wife's car my jaw dropped! Thanks a million for this video!
Thank you. Changing the battery was a breeze thanks to this video. I am a novice at car repairs and the replacement went without a hitch. Thanks a million. (2015 Ford Escape)

You made this a whole hell of a lot easier than the factory method!
This was right on. Detail was just perfect. Without this I would not have been able to change out the battery on my 2013 Ford Escape. Great job.
Now that I watched this awesome tutorial, I am definitely having someone else do this for me!
Great video. Appreciate the simple, clear explanations, and the fact that you explain what the next step is and any issues with it BEFORE doing it (such as the fact that there are clips you cannot see on the back/underside of the cowl).

Thank you. So easy after watching this video! Took 15 minutes total to 100% finish.
Thanks for this video! Was easy breezy to change the battery after watching your video! Feeling like a million bucks right now!!
Nice video and made my new battery install easy considering Ford messed up on location no doubt . I would have never bought a escape had we known this is 2016 29k later battery bad

Excellent how-to video. This method provides access to the firewall enabling installation of a subwoofer power cable to the positive battery terminal. Thank you!
So angry to who ever put the battery there but thank God you show us how to do it.
If I would have known this I would never have bought a Ford Escape.
Your welcome.
i wanna punch the designers in the head who ever designed this battery placement was high af
I totally agree. So stupid!!
lol I said the exact same thing before I read the other comments.
Привет из Санкт-Петербурга! Спасибо за подробную и очень понятную инструкцию !!! Желаю вам удачи!!!
You explained this the best way on UA-cam with great detail..im about to do this today to save probably 40 bucks.....thanks much
Peter Griffin shows us all how to replace a battery.
After watching this excellent video I went out and banged it out in less than an hour. Piece of cake. But you gotta have the right tools ready to go. No way was I going to do the air filter box nightmare.
Appreciate the video just knocked this out unfortunately twice but got it done!
Changing the battery was a total pain in the butt, however, your instructions were very clear and step by step. Thanks rich!
Worked like a charm! Great, informative video. Follow the steps as he outlines and you can’t go wrong.
This was super easy with your directions. My drain pan had 4 bolts. 2014 SE. Thanks for vid. I imagine filter way takes same time. 🤷🏻♂️
I need help locating the starter.

Thank you Rich for taking the time to video this.
Thank you for this video! It was very easy after watching this, you saved me a nice little chunk of change. Thank you again!
Thank you for the video. It really helped and as a result it went a lot faster. This was not one of Fords better ideas.

zip89105 Too bad that more people looking to buy a new Fusion won't see your message. Wait till a headlight bulb burns out and the reality sets in..
It's well documented on Fusion forums. It's a PITA to say the least, but should keep Ford dealers profitable!

Fantastic video! Perfect walk through. You're a lifesaver, thanks!
From México: muy chingón, muy útil la información, no soy mecánico y con este vídeo me lo ahorre, saludos

This video helped me a ton. Thanks for the excellent work. Looked at the other method as well. This one seemed simpler. For the most part it was. A lot of steps but nothing too difficult.

When you are done shut hood lift arms off windshield and turn key on.. Wipers will move a bit... Then cycle the wipers make sure they are not egregiously off.
Great video, easy to follow. Thanks. Please add a piece on how to reset the wipers if needed.
Thank for the video...This was the last straw on Ford, my 2016 Taurus rides horrible, now this with my wife's 2016 SUV. No more Fords for me.and we are getting ready to buy new vehicles.
Just saved myself 250 buckssss
Guy did a real good job with the video. Took his time and explained each step. Thanks for your time.
Thank u so much! Easy to follow and swapped out the battery!
Glad it helped
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 THANK you for this. Saved me a trip to the dealer.
Wish I would have seen this 2 years ago. It took me 1 1/2 hours to replace the battery.
When I saw there was a video for this I knew it couldn't be simple.
Air box method is tremendously easier
Good video
Not sure what the engineers were smoking when they came up with this design.
Maybe they get a kickback on the mechanic labor charge.
eVERY ENGINEER SHOULD BE MADE TO WORK ON THE CARS THEY DESIGN
Most engineers are androids. If you can wrap your head around that, I promise the pill is slightly easier to swallow.
Excellent in every way. Very professional and real person oriented. No wasted time. Do more
Thank you, Rich, very helpful! Only issue is that now I have to figure out how to adjust the blades position lol...
Watching this because my battery is bad . When buying the car I didnt give this a thought. I would have never bought this car if I knew this. Changing the oil is a pain as well.
A simple thing like changing the oil filter is no picnic either.
Way to go Ford! Nothing is simple with a Ford, why put the battery in like that to start with! 5 minute job turns into a couple hours!!! Damn!!
Thanks I changed battery today second time
Glad I could help
Need to show re attachment of wiper arms. You must cycle them once via accessory key position leaving the key on while positioning and tightening them down. Otherwise they'll not be in time, may break and possibly scratch windshield.
Thank you for your thorough description
Great Video thank you Sir took me an hour but saved me a bundle
UA-cam saves the day again.
Thanks! Saved my bacon. I didn't know how I was going to get to that thing!
Thanks so much for video. Would've never been able to do this otherwise
thank god. I saw the video or else I would have been lost. Great Job
This video saved me a ton of time!
Thanks for a well done HowTo.
IMPORTANT:Check this link before before replacing battery ua-cam.com/video/PQtDssj6CnI/v-deo.html
A real pain in the butt, but this video nails it! Thanks!!
And the hold down bracket??? You left that part out.
@@louiewatson9389 He called it a battery clamp...
Thanks for the video. Saved me some money.
Neither autozone or advance auto parts will replace those batteries for free as they do on any other vehicle,
I just checked
Better rest the BMS, plus I’d replace the ground cable w/ integral BMS module.
