I said it when you went on to the Caldon and I'll say it again as you leave it; I love the Caldon, because it has everything in one, short, canal. Okay, it's quite tight - some of those bridge/bend combinations can be a bit 'snug' and we had a 70ft boat! From Stone, as it happens (the green and red hire boats with girls names.) Because we had a big boat, we didn't go down the Froghall branch, as I mentioned, but seeing 'the trrrraaaaaiiiin' was great, thank you. (You've been watching too much Colin Fox!) For the real nerds (canal boaters who like trains) that was an USATC S160 locomotive. They were built in America to supplement and replace wrecked locomotives in Britain and Europe, during and after the war and ended up in a wide variety of countries. There are at least two and maybe more S160's on UK preserved railways. The Churnett Valley being one, obviously, although it could be 'on loan' from another railway. I hope your engine trouble is nothing really debilitating? Good vlog and I so love seeing all those familiar places again.
@@NarrowboatChef It was odd; when we went on the K&A, we had a 64 foot boat and we had to 'admit' to the boatyard we had never driven anything else but a 70 footer! They aren't that much more difficult, you just have to remember they pivot about a point one third boat length from the bow. Oh and the slightest bend in the bank you moor to means there will be either a big ( you wouldn't want to step across) gap midships or, a gap either end that makes boarding/disembarking uncomfortable. Not to mention windage in any noticeable wind.
Lovely trip...I loved seeing the old mill and it's quaint buildings. I couldn't believe my eyes when you mentioned the train and then there was a steam engine or at least a very old train going past and even blew the whistle for y'all. Thanks for sharing the ride. Have a Blessed day.
I used to get the same remarks about my wife in the 1990s whenever my 4ft 11in wonder woman used to operate the locks. She hated driving our "Tupperware" Shetland family 4 cruiser (Little Madam II ) but enjoyed doing the locks. We also used to get funny remarks about sleeping on our 18ft boat. We used to take 4 or 5 trips of 14 days nearly every year and loved it. PS photo of me in my 30s now 69.
Hi Maggie Ryan ,great video some beautiful scenery on this trip ,yes Maggie doing the locks dose keep you warm most important Fit ,tell me how long is your narrowboat it looked very long at one point coming round the bend are you just told me 60 feet ,has Ryan had a mop chop lol looks younger ,thank you for the trip most enjoyable like the music as well take care keep safe,John 🌈🌹🥂💜✅🐶
walked along there and been on the train,, Smashing addition to this video, so lucky and a whistle as well. Lovely old mill complete with water wheel. just a lovely quiet journey with time to spare. thank you
Yes, getting off the boat and walking and doing the locks is a great way to warm up, it can get so cold just standing on the back of the boat. Loved the train shot 😊
Loved the last remark about you not being able to handle the boat and the locks. However, you can always point out to those people that made comments (and they were very sexist) that they are more than welcome to check out all the episodes of your Vlogs to prove that both you and Ryan are more than capable of handling yourselves in most if not all situations that have and will arise in your travels. Enjoy your time and stay safe.
i guess Im asking randomly but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
@Ameer Jack Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
It's so nice to see you all enjoying life, let me tell you we are still working our way through your lovely cook book recipes, they're lovely. Have fun!
Thank you for Pixel time, such a dear sweet dog. Buddy said to say Hi via a woof..lol.. I know you were offended by people's comments but maybe they were being nice type concerned. (did come across as rude though). Ryan you would make a lovely children's book writer. Great Vlog as always.
Glad you had great weather aside from the wind, and will have made it back for the engine work (a month ago, but ‘now’ in youtube time). What with having lost Roxie recently, the large dose of pixel footage was greatly appreciated here. Thank you so much for taking the time to film, edit and share these. I don’t know if you’ll ever really know how much your viewers enjoy them, but then again, I bet you feel similarly about some of the folks whose channels you follow. Please stay safe and we’re looking forward to the next trip section and next cooking episode!
You're not the only channel where I see the man standing on the boat steering, while the woman does all the heavy work of locks and bridges, not to mention walking. This generally seems to be the norm when I visit canals. Interesting....!
Most of the time we take turns and in normal circumstances, Ryan tends to do most of the locks. We decided that Maggie would do the majority of the locks for the time being to limit Ryan’s exposure to surfaces touched by a lot of others, plus areas where other people tend to gather around. 😊
Great vid chaps. You know, if all you boat tubers were to hold a cutest dog competition, I think Pixel would win easy. That said, I think there’s some competition in the future from Otis on Foxes Afloat! Seriously, from what I have seen, all the boat tube dogs all deserve a good stroke for being so lovely. And the cats too!
Always enjoy, love to Pixel.....You both always have such lovely smiles and just enjoying each other. Take care the bug is back again in US, coming your way again.
That train footage is fantastic! I used to work in Scranton, Pennsylvania and my office was in a building adjacent to the tracks Steamtown USA used for their excursions. I loved hearing and seeing them around.
Hi Gary, if you’ve already bought the cookbook, it’s a digital downloadable book - if you didn’t get the download link, just let us know your order number and we can resend it to you 🙂
@@NarrowboatChef because they can't!! Why else?? Best to ignore those folk or say sorry that they feel so inadequate, if you are feeling cranky. But then better not. They most likely wouldn't understand. :-) And if you ever try it. Steering a plane is even simpler.
Your videos are very enjoyable, thank you for sharing them! I first saw you on David's channel Cruising the Cut where you were teaching him to make scones. He was not a natural. hahahaha. Has he made any since I wonder :-).
It may be all twisty-turny and stuff, but the Caldon does have some beautiful views. Also good to know that the burned-out boat has been taken care of. Hope all went well with the engine! Also, every time I see Pixel looking out from the stern deck it always looks to me like she's planning a jump. Do you have a problem with her doing that, or is she pretty good at resisting the urge to take the plunge? EDIT: Just purchased the cookbook -- looking forward to making lots of yummy stuff!
Thanks for buying the cookbook! No, Pixel is very good, she knows that she’s only allowed to jump off if we say so. Now falling off, that’s another matter entirely! 😂
I imagine it’s quite tricky as a single boater - they would need to pull onto the landing, grab the centre line rope, open the bridge and then pull the boat through with the rope. It’s not exactly a simple endeavour!
Great vlog. That jackass who made those sexist remarks is a vanishing breed and probably feels threatened by strong, independent women such as you. I'm curious about that water pipe (11:13 mins in) it seems to be covered by some sort of obstacle barrier? To discourage people from crossing maybe? Lovely to see you all, and dear Pixel seems in great shape. Take care. This virus doesn't get fatigued. John, Ontario, Canada
Just subscribed to your Vlog, having watched a couple of your vlogs in the past them dismiss them, while looking for a N/B. I worry dismissed watch you both, due to fact of the name NarrowBoat Chef, as (to me) I can't stand watching people mess with food (I 'am a Very Plain & Simple man with regards to food, my Grandmother used to work in a cafe everything, was covered in gravy which hide the gristle & lack of meat, SHe brought home the so called leftovers, so I have grown up with a deep mis-distrust of food). It's only recently that I have re-found your Vlogs, as I' am looking to doing the Caldon Canal next year & have really enjoyed them. Please don't take offence to the later on my next question is, who is or are both of you, from Australia? (had to google, your flag to find it was the AUSTRALIAN RED ENSIGN).
Hi Vinny! No offence taken at all, quite understandable why you would have those sorts of feelings towards food. We are both from Australia actually, we’ve been in the UK for almost 6 years now 😊

Pray tell. What’s a monget tout? . Thanks. Alan
Possibly a typo for little peas! :-)
They are similar to sugar snap peas - essentially just peas in a pod!

Mange tout are flat pea pods.
Snow Peas. Yummy thin pea pods with tiny peas in them. You eat the whole pod.
